Families celebrate a more inclusive Newport Beach, opening of universally accessible playground
April 25, 2025 | Source: Daily Pilot
A vision of a more inclusive Newport Beach sparked by a young resident who spoke out on behalf of her nonverbal sister six years ago came to fruition with the dedication Wednesday of the city’s first playground designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. The $900,000 renovation of San Miguel Park’s 5,500-square-foot play area has a long tube slide that visitors with mobility issues can reach via a spiraling belt of suspended play mats, instead of stairs or ladders…
Why judges blocked the Trump admin’s school DEI crackdown
April 26, 2025 | Source: NPR
Three federal judges, in Maryland, New Hampshire and Washington, D.C., ruled Thursday that the Trump administration had overstepped when it ordered the nation’s schools to stop all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs as well as classroom teaching the administration might consider discriminatory. For the moment, this means the U.S. Department of Education cannot make good on its threat to punish noncompliant districts by withholding vital federal funding, including dollars that help K-12 schools serve low-income students and children with disabilities…
Serving people with disabilities on public transportation
April 26, 2025 | Source: The Western Front
Several weeks ago, an article ran in The Front that raised questions regarding the accessibility of public transportation in Whatcom County. Since meeting the needs of people with disabilities is a huge part of what we do at Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA), I want to be clear about what’s available. WTA operates a fleet of what we call “fixed route” buses, or the large city buses you see coursing through town. All of our fixed route buses meet accessibility standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)…

April 26, 2025 | Source: Newport News Times
Born in 2017 from a dream of allowing mobility impaired individuals to better access the outdoors, the nonprofit David’s Chair now houses 23 chairs in 17 locations across four states. Jeff Kallevig, David’s Chair’s Operations Manager for Northwest Oregon, said that the organization’s expansion had been made possible by a partnership with Oregon Parks Forever that helped bring in grant dollars to catalyze partnerships on the coast. David Hartrick was diagnosed with ALS in 2017 and found that his decreased mobility made it hard to access outdoor recreation opportunities that he loved…

Justices seem puzzled by district’s argument in disability case
April 28, 2025 | Source: K-12 Dive
When a Minnesota family took their fight for fair treatment for their disabled daughter to the Supreme Court, they hoped the justices would make it easier for them to hold their school district accountable. Many lower courts use a tougher standard for discrimination suits related to education than for other allegations pursued through the Americans with Disabilities Act. Gina and Aaron Tharpe want the Supreme Court stop that. But the district is defending itself in a way that threatens to raise the bar for all victims of disability discrimination, they say…
Denver moves another step closer to getting safer and more accessible sidewalks
April 28, 2025 | Source: Denver7
The Mile High City is getting another step closer to having safer and more accessible sidewalks. Denver City Council approved a $15 million contract to help with the development of a master plan. This comes years after Denver voters approved the Denver Deserves Sidewalks initiative, which shifted the responsibility of sidewalk maintenance from private property owners to the city and established a citywide fee to fund the work. Jill Locantore, executive director for Denver Streets Partnership, explained the delay in moving the program forward…
Meet the Texan trying to make emergency response accessible for all
April 28, 2025 | Source: Texas Standard
When University of Texas student Fabiola Amaya heard the fire alarm blare through her dorm, she felt a sense of panic. Unlike the rest of her peers, Amaya couldn’t immediately evacuate the building. She was told to stay put and wait for further instructions. Amaya uses a power wheelchair, and at the time she lived on campus with her mother, who serves as her full-time caregiver. Unlike many other universities and community colleges across Texas, UT Austin doesn’t have evacuation chairs in any of its buildings…
Deaf students had a path to science careers — until their federal grants ended
April 28, 2025 | Source: NPR
In the laboratory, Sara Blick-Nitko searches for treatments for cancer. But before she could become a scientist, she had to find what deaf people like her call the “Deaf Scientist Pipeline.” The federal grants that make up that pipeline helped her earn a Ph.D., begin her post-doctoral research and overcome the multiple barriers that historically keep deaf students from becoming scientists. “Growing up, I never met another deaf person working in the science field,” says Blick-Nitko…
A severe autism advocate responds to RFK Jr.’s research initiative
April 28, 2025 | Source: NPR
About one in 31 children in the U.S. has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, according to CDC data released this month. When Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. discussed these findings, he declared that autism is a rapidly growing “epidemic” in the U.S. and vowed to identify the “environmental toxin” he says is to blame. Which of Kennedy’s remarks rang true to those in the autism community? Jill Escher is the president of the National Council on Severe Autism, and had both gratitude and criticism for the new initiative…

April 29, 2025 | Source: Nebraska Public Media

The children’s needs can vary, ranging from not being able to speak because of physical or neurological issues to not speaking English as a first language. “We just wanted to bring all that together so everyone could hopefully communicate better together, foster those social interactions and friendship skills and be inclusive to all,” said Emily Kurz…

Parent sues Thompson School District over accessibility at Loveland High School
April 29, 2025 | Source: Loveland Reporter-Herald
A parent in the Thompson School District has filed a lawsuit alleging that the district has failed to provide accessibility for disabled people. The lawsuit, filed in November in the U.S. District Court in Denver, is in settlement negotiations, according to Joanna Johnson, the plaintiff. Johnson, who has Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that limits her ability to speak and walk, among other ailments, said the district has not given appropriate accommodations for her power chair, causing her to miss dozens of events at Loveland High School, where her son attends…
Katie Dolan: Trump’s attack on accessibility
April 29, 2025 | Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
I had been falling a lot. It was almost as if my small feet were suddenly too big. Then my symptoms took a darker turn. “I can’t see!” I gasped one frigid January morning in 1997. Beside me, my boyfriend asked, “What do you mean you can’t see?” I couldn’t catch enough breath to speak normally. My left eye hurt, and I could only see a kind of darkness that I had never seen before. It was like an abyss. My voice was too loud, too quick, too high. I was disoriented…

Inclusive Fitness was specifically designed for people who are neurodivergent and who have intellectual disabilities…

That was the message delivered recently to the Hampton Beach Area Commission by Johanna Lyons, planning and development specialist for New Hampshire’s State Parks. The information came from a year-long Accessibility Feasibility Study commissioned by the state to examine Hampton Beach State Park for ways to make it easier for everyone to enjoy…

Education Department stops $1 billion in funding for school mental health
May 1, 2025 | Source: NPR
The Trump administration says it will stop paying out $1 billion in federal grants that school districts across the country have been using to hire mental health professionals, including counselors and social workers. The U.S. Department of Education is telling impacted districts that the Biden administration, in awarding the grants, violated “the letter or purpose of Federal civil rights law.” The grants were part of the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – a bill passed in the aftermath of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which a teen gunman killed 19 elementary school students, two adults and injured 17 people…

April 25, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada

Hunter Chantiam, who left the role last year for a new opportunity, is speaking out two months after CBC Toronto reported on GO Station parking spots reserved for people with disabilities being misused. “I had the tools to enforce it, but I didn’t necessarily feel that I was being backed up by the management team when I did try to protect people’s rights and the spots,” said Chantiam…

April 26, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Karthik Babu Menon is ready to vote in his first-ever federal election, but he’s not just thinking about how to mark his ballot, but also about the potential challenges he might face in getting into the voting booth. In previous elections, he’s found voting fairly accessible as someone who uses a walker to get around Saskatoon, but he thinks there’s still ways to make voting even easier, for instance, by getting rid of pencil and paper voting. “I would definitely prefer something which has touch technology, like touch screens,” he said…
Using positive language around my disability shows you care
April 27, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Imagine being stopped at the supermarket and told, “You’re so inspiring for just … being out and about!” Good intentions or not, if we unpack what is really being said, it’s that my existence as a disabled person is viewed as some sort of motivational seminar. To praise me for doing my weekly shop is not a compliment. It’s a reminder that society doesn’t expect people like me to step out of the house, let alone thrive. As someone who lives at the intersection of disability, womanhood, and cultural diversity, I experience the weight of language every day…

Disability community asks to co-design ‘isolating’ social media ban
April 27, 2025- ABC News- Australia
For people with a disability, social media can be a lifeline. For the neurodivergent, people with sensory challenges and the immunocompromised, it can be a safe and manageable way to stay in touch with the world and connect with people who understand your experience. Disability advocates call for more funding to fix regional footpaths

The genetic condition causes her heart rate to increase abnormally and can lead to dizziness, light-headedness and fainting…

The False Economy of Cutting Disability Benefits
April 28, 2025 | Source: Social Europe- EU
What keeps you awake at night? For me, these days, however persistent the thoughts spooling in my mind can be, I have to admit that they are not, really, frightening. This is in contrast to my younger days when, living in the USA, anxieties about not having enough money, not being able to manage, knowing there was no safety net, could fill my nights with dread and stomach churning anxiety. I have gone without medical treatment because I couldn’t afford it, shopped for groceries with a calculator checking every item against a tiny budget, juggled the unpaid bills and the increasingly threatening demands for payment…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
