“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”― John Lubbock

Lawsuit Challenges Delay of Federal Web Accessibility Protections
June 1, 2026 | Source: MeriTalk
The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) has sued the Trump administration over delayed website accessibility requirements, arguing the postponement unlawfully stalls protections designed to help blind Americans access essential public services online. The lawsuit challenges actions by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that pushed back compliance deadlines for web and mobile accessibility standards by one year. The NFB alleges the agencies violated the Administrative Procedure Act by issuing the delays without public notice or input…
Beyond Compliance: Supporting Schools in Meeting ADA Digital Accessibility Standards
June 2, 2026 | Source: New America
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990, established a civil rights framework prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities across public life. Central to that framework is Title II, which prohibits disability-based discrimination by state and local government entities, including public schools, colleges and universities, in their services, programs, and activities, including digital content and services. In the nearly 36 years since the ADA’s passage, the digital landscape and public education with it, has transformed dramatically…
Disability Rights Are at Risk as 7 States Back Case Attacking Key Protections
May 30, 2026 | Source: Truthout
The right of disabled people to live in community rather than being warehoused in institutions is under attack in a lawsuit currently being pursued by Texas and six other states. But advocacy efforts are persuading states to pull out of the suit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Secretary of HHS Robert F. Kennedy Jr., called Texas v. Kennedy. Two state plaintiffs withdrew from the case in May after hearing concerns from the disability community, bringing the number of remaining state plaintiffs to only seven in an amended case that began with seventeen…

Redefining accessibility: Utah County duo continues to push the limits for wheelchair users
May 28, 2026 | Source: Daily Herald
Sam Durst has gone just about everywhere on his Motus All-Terrain Wheelchair alongside childhood friend Ryan Grassley, with each adventure documented for the world to see. Their TikTok channel, Extreme Motus, has more than 400,000 followers who watch Durst, who has celebral palsy and is wheelchair-bound, navigate through rocky terrain, snow fields and even trampoline parks on a custom-made chair with absorbent, low-pressure tires. The Utah County-based duo has used the exposure to grow a wheelchair business that shares the social media name, selling thousands of all-terrain wheelchairs to individuals globally so those with disabilities can have experiences they otherwise couldn’t access…
By September, Nearly a Third of Americans Will Live in States With Legal Aid in Dying
May 30, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
Jules Netherland traveled from her home in the Bronx to the New York State Capitol in Albany several times in the past few years, hoping to persuade the Legislature to pass a medical aid in dying bill, allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives with a lethal prescription. She spoke at rallies. With other members of the advocacy organization Compassion and Choices, she visited legislators’ offices. In 2024, as the State Assembly was debating the aid in dying bill, she helped unfurl a banner in the chamber gallery that read, “Stop the Suffering.”…
How much do schools spend on special education? Feds aim to find out
June 1, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
For the first time in more than two decades, federal officials are moving forward with plans to find out just how much schools across the nation are spending on students with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Education is taking steps to green-light what’s known as the National Special Education Spending Study. “The study will produce estimates for what is spent on special education services for students with disabilities (SWDs), both overall and by disability category, including expenditures made by states, districts, and schools,” the agency’s Institute of Education Sciences said in a request for clearance from the White House Office of Management and Budget…
Lawsuit Alleges Corporate Landlord’s Neglect is Endangering Disabled Tenants and Undermining Access to Rent-Controlled Housing
June 1, 2026 | Source: Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund
The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) and the Eviction Defense Collaborative (EDC) have filed a lawsuit on behalf of three mobility disabled tenants who have been trapped for years in inaccessible conditions at a rent-controlled apartment building in San Francisco, after the building’s management company refused to fix the building’s sole elevator when it stopped working. The lawsuit alleges that Structure Properties, which took over management of the building several years ago, has allowed the property to deteriorate while failing to maintain critical accessibility features relied upon by disabled and older tenants…
Arkansans share push for true accessibility, inclusion
June 2, 2026 | Source: KNWA FOX24
Two Arkansans are challenging viewers to rethink what accessibility really means — and why many who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or nonverbal say the world still is not built with them in mind. The latest episode of Let’s Talk About It, now available on demand through 479 First, features an honest conversation about access, communication, identity and dignity — and the mental toll of navigating systems that often fall short. The discussion also explores what true inclusion should look like. Eric Yarberry, president and CEO of World Services for the Blind, says some of the biggest barriers are not always visible…

June 2, 2026 | Source: WZZM13
A recent West Michigan college grad is starting a new movement reminding us that accessibility is for everyone. Aidan Van Doren studied collaborative design at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University and is using his new degree to spread to his message. “How do we create a world together that includes everybody?” Van Doren told 13 ON YOUR SIDE, that’s the question for students studying collaborative design at Kendall College. “When we design for wheelchair users or people that have hard of hearing or sight, it really benefits everybody,” he said…

Adding to the List of Dementia Risks: a Diet High in Ultraprocessed Foods
June 3, 2026 | Source: The Wall Street Journal
Eating a diet high in ultraprocessed foods is associated with an increased risk of dementia, according to new research, adding to the growing list of health problems linked to foods such as packaged cookies, hot dogs and chips. In a study published Wednesday in the American Journal of Public Health, the group of people who reported eating the highest amount of ultraprocessed foods had a 58% higher risk of later developing dementia and a 46% increased risk of developing cognitive impairment than those who said they ate the least…
Importance of Accessibility at Historic Sites
June 3, 2026 | Source: Densho
Since childhood, I have loved history and frequently visited museums and historic sites, and attended conferences. However, as a person with low vision, I have found that many locations, exhibits, and presentations are inaccessible for several reasons, including dark interiors, small text and inaccessible fonts, lack of contrast, not being able to get close to exhibits or text, and lack of accessible materials. Since getting COVID in 2024, I have also had difficulty processing lots of information and articulating words, and am more aware of how videos and other audio and oral media may be inaccessible, especially in loud environments…
‘Voting By Mail is My Lifeline’: Voter with Disability Shares Importance of Mail-In Voting
June 3, 2026 | Source: American Civil Liberties Union
The only time I voted in person, I had to first find a driver, either through a voting advocacy agency or by placing an advertisement and paying out of pocket. Then, my caregiver had to get me ready. Because I live in a rural area, finding care is not always easy. Before leaving home, I had to make sure that the polling place was wheelchair accessible and could accommodate my power chair and mobility constraints. As someone with cerebral palsy, voting in person is a difficult process. But participating in elections allows me to be part of my community, to express my identity as a human being, and feel whole…
Houston-area man accused of selling fake accessible parking placards online
June 3, 2026 | Source: Houston Public Media
A Houston-area man is accused of operating an online scheme to sell fake Texas accessible parking placards online, according to Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen. David T. Brown, 28, was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with tampering with governmental records, according to court documents. Brown is accused of advertising blue permanent-disability placards — the type hung from car rearview mirrors to park in accessible spots — on social media. Rosen, in a post on his social media page, said Brown allegedly charged $150 to fraudulently add a person’s driver’s license number and other information to a blank placard…

June 4,2026 | Source: 8 News NOW
Actress and deaf advocate Marlee Matlin shared her review of accessibility for those hard of hearing at Sphere in Las Vegas this week. The Academy Award winner said she went to see The Wizard of Oz, posting two videos about her experience. “I thought what would be the positives and negatives having to do with captioning?” Matlin said in her video. “I was pretty curious about that.” In that same video, Matlin added that she went to guest services and was given a QR code to scan and use captions on her phone…
Screens are leaving schools fast, though some students with disabilities rely on them
June 4, 2026 | Source: NPR
Ninth grader Soraya Martin is a bubbly, social teenager who recently found a new passion. “I’m a very creative writer, I love to write stories for fun,” she says. Stories come naturally to Soraya, but reading and writing don’t. That’s because she has dyslexia. “Academically, school has always been a really big challenge for me.” Then last school year, she started using technology that allows her to do a number of things: dictate her writing rather than type, listen to books rather than read them on a page and take photos of notes on the board…

Improving accessibility at beaches, bus stops, footpaths, parks and public buildings was among the key issues discussed during a meeting between Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials and members of the Disability Rights Alliance earlier this week. The meeting, chaired by GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran, brought together officials and disability rights advocates as part of an ongoing engagement on making public infrastructure more accessible for persons with disabilities (PwDs). Members of the alliance said that the discussions largely focused on projects that have been under follow-up with the civic body for over a year, including accessible beach pathways, bus stop design, footpath improvements and…
Spotlight on SDG 4 good practices: Accessible digital textbooks for all
June 1, 2026 | Source: UNESCO- Globally
Across many education systems, millions of children are still excluded from meaningful learning due to lack of inclusive learning materials. Textbooks are often produced in standard print formats, leaving learners who are blind, deaf, or who experience reading or cognitive difficulties without meaningful access to quality learning opportunities. At the system level, accessibility and inclusion are still rarely treated as foundational elements of education. Teachers are expected to include all students, but lack the tools, materials, and training to do so…
A Step Toward Accessibility: Compensation for Employers Hiring People with Disabilities
June 1, 2026 | Source: Donetsk Regional State Administration- Ukraine
National Accessibility Week is another opportunity to highlight that equal opportunities in employment begin with employers’ openness and willingness to create accessible and comfortable workplaces for everyone. Today, the state supports employers who hire people with disabilities, as an inclusive labor market is about respect, dignity, and the development of a barrier-free society. One of the effective support mechanisms is compensation for actual labor costs. Employers are entitled to compensation amounting to 50% of actual labor costs, but not exceeding the minimum wage, for hiring people with disabilities who have not reached retirement age and have been registered as unemployed for more than one month…
China makes substantial progress in improving accessibility for children with disabilities
June 1, 2026 | Source: People’s Daily- China
China has made substantial progress in improving accessibility for children with disabilities, said Amakobe Sande, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative to China. Sande made the remarks ahead of International Children’s Day, noting that China’s law on building a barrier-free living environment marks an important step forward in promoting accessibility. “It establishes clear standards and accountability, and lays the groundwork for more inclusive systems,” she said. China has also stepped up efforts to provide greater support to families of children with disabilities through child welfare reform, Sande said…
Kitchener musician says finding an accessible studio in Ontario was ‘beyond challenging’
June 1, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Everything about making music comes easy to Michael Monize — everything except finding accessible studio space. The musician, who’s based in Kitchener, Ont., has used a wheelchair for over 20 years after a spinal cord injury. While pursuing his craft, though, he’s faced issues in finding an accessible studio. Monize has been searching for space in cities across southwestern Ontario, including Toronto and, most recently, in Waterloo region. “I would describe it as beyond challenging,” Monize said, reflecting on the amount of time and research that went into trying to find a wheelchair-friendly studio space…

‘A community issue’: Proponents advocate for greater accessibility in Calgary homes
June 4, 2026 | Source: Calgary Herald- Canada
For many Calgarians, an accessible house is something that’s easy to overlook. It’s not until a parent struggles to get down the stairs or a devastating health diagnosis that a familiar home can suddenly turn into a series of obstacles. At Accessible Housing’s engaging in accessibility event Thursday, held during National Accessibility Week, the message was clear — this is an issue that can affect anyone at any time. “Accessibility is not a niche issue, it is a community issue,” CEO of Accessible Housing Krista Davidson Flint said…
