May 18, 2026 | Source: WTTW
A key Chicago City Council panel agreed Monday to settle a lawsuit brought by disability advocacy organization Access Living that alleged the city failed to comply with federal laws and build affordable housing accessible to Chicagoans with disabilities by paying $2.25 million. The agreement also calls for the city to build or rehabilitate 2,000 new affordable units accessible to those with limited mobility as well as an additional 840 new affordable units accessible for Chicagoans with limited hearing and sight during the next 12 years, according Managing Deputy Corporation Counsel John Hendricks…
Consultants to drill down on rental unit accessibility for Detroiters with disabilities
May 18, 2026 | Source: Bridge Detroit
Much of Detroit’s housing stock isn’t accessible to residents with disabilities and city officials say they aren’t going to make any assumptions about what Detroiters need. The City Council last week signed off on a $208,000 contract with national architecture and accessibility consultants expected to drill down on deficiencies in nearly two dozen multi-family rental housing complexes in Detroit and provide a range of recommended modifications to improve them. Keegan Mahoney, program director for Detroit’s Housing and Revitalization Department, said the one-year contract with Massachusetts-based KMA, LLC., will allow the city to examine accessibility for residents with varying abilities at up to 20 buildings with rental housing….

The Importance of Accessibility Editing in Picture Books
May 14, 2026 | Source: Publishers Weekly
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), there are some exciting accommodations being made within the children’s publishing industry. This doesn’t mean separate books for kids who may have dyslexia or dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, a visual impairment, or a physical disability like cerebral palsy. Instead, accessibility editing makes titles more inclusive and readable for children with learning disabilities. A great forthcoming reference book that lays out some types of special educational needs and disabilities is All Brains Welcome by Johanna Peyton, illustrated by Olga Popova (Sourcebooks, Oct.)…
Disability community grateful for controversial lawsuit withdrawal
May 15, 2026 | Source: Dakota News Now
There’s a collective sigh of relief among those following a federal lawsuit. This comes following the state’s withdrawal from a case that appears to have unintended consequences for disabled South Dakotans. Cole Eucker is not the only person glad to hear that South Dakota is dropping its support for Texas versus Kennedy, affecting even students on accommodation plans. “It’s been a significant amount of relief and excitement for this decision by the AG’s office,” said Eucker. “There are a lot of people who benefit from IEP plans, but there are also a lot of kids who benefit from 504 plans. Or once they get out, and they’re receiving services in the community.”…
After viral graduation walk, paraplegic student calls for greater accessibility: ‘It doesn’t have to be so hard’
May 15, 2026 | Source: The Guardian
Jaiden Picot, who was paralyzed in 2024 after a truck hit him, never imagined that video of him recently walking across Virginia Union University (VUU)‘s graduation stage in a futuristic robotic suit would go viral. But since it did, he says he wants the world to know that he intends to spend his professional career trying to help make the place more accessible to people who – like him – use a wheelchair to get around. “I know I missed a lot of going out with my friends” after being paralyzed, he said in an interview with the Guardian. “I was unable to get into certain restaurants, certain events, just because they don’t have a ramp for me to get in…
The ‘R-word’ is making a comeback. Maine is working to eliminate it.
May 15,2026 | Source: Bangor Daily News
The “R-word” is back. A term that has been replaced in respectful discourse by “intellectual disability” has reared its ugly head. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has apologized for his recent use of the “R-word”. Slurs on X involving the “R-word” more than tripled after President Donald Trump used the slur in a Thanksgiving Day Truth Social post. Adverse consequences abound. In a randomized controlled experiment (the gold standard for this type of study), college undergraduates exposed to the slur expressed lower tolerance toward people with intellectual disabilities…
Vermonters will vote on equal protection amendment to state constitution this fall
May15, 2026 | Source: VTDigger
Vermont voters will have the chance to weigh in on another amendment to the state’s constitution this fall. The proposal, which got a final sign-off from the House on Wednesday, is aimed at ensuring all people are treated equally under the law regardless of their race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or nationality. A statewide vote is the last step in the yearslong process that PR.4, or any other proposed change to Vermont’s founding document, must follow. The Senate, where the measure was first proposed nearly a decade ago, gave its final sign-off to the amendment in March…
How Can Inclusive Organizations Reach People Who Need Their Support
May 15, 2026 | Source: Freedom For All Americans
Inclusive organizations often know who they want to help, yet many still struggle to reach people who need support most. The gap rarely comes from poor intentions. It comes from distance: language barriers, weak trust, inaccessible websites, limited transport, fear, stigma, and daily schedules that leave little room for formal help. A legal aid clinic may offer free support, yet tenants facing eviction may never see the notice. A disability group may run strong programs, yet its registration form may fail for screen reader users. A food pantry may post updates online, while older residents rely on church bulletins or phone calls…
Airlines Increasingly Commit To Autism Training For Staff
May 15, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
Just ahead of the summer travel season, another airline is taking steps to be more welcoming toward travelers on the spectrum. Virgin Atlantic says that it will train all of its cabin crew on how to support individuals with autism and their families. The airline is working with Autism Double-Checked, an organization that helps travel companies become autism friendly, on the effort which will be incorporated into Virgin Atlantic’s annual training activities. “We know that for autistic customers and their families, flying can be a unique and unfamiliar environment which presents challenges…
Special education fair an inspiration on Staten Island: ‘It’s so empowering for all’
May 16, 2026 | Source: SILive
More than 100 families and educators gathered Thursday at Michael J. Petrides School for the District 31 Special Education Accessibility Fair, an event designed to connect the special education community with resources and support. “Accessibility is accessibility for all,” Jenna Patel, an administrator of special education, said. “It’s access to curriculum, it’s access to extracurricular, it’s access to anything within their environment, inside a school and outside of school.” “A lot of our students are introduced to assistive technology within their educational journey…
On This Day in 1953, the World Lost Willie Nelson’s Greatest Guitar Influence, Who Mastered His Instrument Despite a Severe Disability
May 16, 2026 | Source: American Songwriter
You’d be hard-pressed to find a country music fan who hasn’t heard of Willie Nelson. The Red-Headed Stranger has become anything but in the music industry, winning over listeners for decades on end with his earnest tenor and jazz-tinged guitar playing on his trusty Martin N-20 named Trigger. But fewer people know the name of one of.. Nelson’s biggest guitar influences—the man who changed how the country singer approached his instrument entirely: Django Reinhardt. The Romani jazz guitarist was a pioneering figure in the rise of “g**** jazz,” an outdated pejorative term against the Roma people…
ASL interpreters help with accessibility in theaters, but more advertising would go a long way
May 17, 2026 | Source: The Spokesman-Review
To make something accessible means to make it available for all. There are ramps and elevators for those with mobility aids, texts in Braille for those who are blind, accessible parking and restrooms. At live performances, like a play, musical or concert, that accessibility comes via American Sign Language interpreters, who ensure members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community don’t miss out on a single moment. Interpreter Kim James took her first ASL course at Spokane Falls Community College to fulfill a foreign language requirement for her bachelor’s degree…
Has inclusion been excluded in Oklahoma?
May 17, 2026 | Source: The Oklahoman
Disability exclusion in the United States is often explained as an unfortunate result of complexity or limited resources. In reality, it is neither accidental nor rare. It is structurally accepted, financially rationalized and culturally normalized, embedded so deeply in public spaces, service systems and employment practices that it quietly teaches us who public life is for. This is especially true in Oklahoma, where exclusion is a quiet expectation woven into health care, nonprofit services and community infrastructure. Ambulatory disability is the most common physical limitation among adult Oklahomans, affecting 8.7% of adults…
Leading Disability Organizations: Delaying Section 504 Compliance is Unacceptable
May 18, 2026 | Source: American Association of People with Disabilities
AAPD and the undersigned disability and civil rights organizations are profoundly disappointed in the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Interim Final Rule (IFR) that makes changes to the 2024 Section 504 Rehabilitation Act regulations preventing disability discrimination in healthcare and human services. The IFR extends the compliance deadlines for accessibility requirements related to web content, mobile applications, and certain electronic systems used by health and human service providers receiving federal funding. Delaying these timelines is unacceptable and will reduce access to health care for people with disabilities…
DOJ Accessibility: What Businesses Should Do Now Rather Than Later
May 19, 2026 | Source: Rolling Stone
The Department of Justice pushed the digital accessibility deadline out to 2027 through an Interim Final Rule. For a lot of teams, that took the pressure off—at least on paper. The requirement itself didn’t change. Organizations are still expected to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, whether that shows up in a website, a mobile experience or the documents they publish. The shift happened for a simple reason: this work is bigger than it looks from the outside. Legacy systems, fragmented content, third-party platforms and a lack of internal ownership have made accessibility a difficult undertaking…
Amid School Techlash, Accessibility Advocates Worry About Exclusion
May 19, 2026 | Source: EdSurge
Keri Rodrigues, a mother of five boys, knows the value of screens. For her boys, four of whom receive school accommodations, screens serve a practical purpose at school. “When you get a kid who’s got [a learning plan] for anxiety and a substitute teacher that hasn’t read his 504 [plan] and there’s nobody there to de-escalate him, he’s got to use his phone to call mom so I can FaceTime with him and do a breathing exercise,” Rodrigues says. But this use of screens bumps against a new concern. Fueled by distress over the mental health impacts of too much screen time, lawmakers have begun to pass device bans and other restrictions for schools, in a rising “techlash” across state capitols…
As Litigation Risk Looms, NASCIO Examines Digital Accessibility
May 20, 2026 | Source: Government Technology
For some, digital accessibility conversations may still begin with screen readers and adhering to visual impairments. But new guidance from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) argues that view is far too narrow and if agencies struggle to define what accessibility actually means, compliance efforts might be flawed from the very beginning. Max Heintz, supervising attorney for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services, examines the issue and offers legal guidance on meeting federal digital accessibility standards in NASCIO’s Digital Accessibility Compliance: Thoughts from a Public Sector Attorney report released Wednesday…
National Federation of the Blind Sues Trump-Vance Administration Over Delays to Critical Website Accessibility Protections
May 21, 2026 | Source: Democracy Forward Foundation
The National Federation of the Blind, represented by Democracy Forward and Brown, Goldstein and Levy, filed a lawsuit today challenging the administration’s abrupt delay of critical website accessibility features designed to ensure blind people and people with other disabilities can access essential government and healthcare services online. The lawsuit challenges actions by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that postponed long-anticipated compliance deadlines under federal disability rights laws without public notice or input…
Jack Fact — According to Eurostat, with 90 million people – over 1 in 5 Europeans – living with a disability, full inclusion is imperative both to ensure rights are respected and also to boost Europe’s economy and democracy. Yet barriers remain: only 55% are employed, compared with 77% of persons without a disability; 1.4 million persons with disabilities still live in institutional settings; and 1 in 3 are at risk of poverty, nearly double the EU average.

Hamilton mulls change to sidewalks, intersections. Why some residents with disabilities say no
May 14, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Hamilton could be turning away from a locally-designed accessibility solution that makes sidewalks and intersections easier for people with disabilities to navigate. City staff say the change would help bring the city in line with accessibility standards and other municipalities. However, several people with disabilities tell CBC Hamilton the proposed alternative could make it harder and more dangerous to get around. Currently, many of the city’s sidewalk curb ramps and intersections feature textured concrete so people who have low or no vision can feel they’re moving toward traffic…
‘Accessibility trails changed my life’
May 15, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A woman who has been using accessible trails for the last three years said she has had her “life changed” by the “freedom to get in amongst nature and discover things that I forgot existed”. Sue Just, speaking at the launch of a new trail in Silverdale, Lancashire, said “it was like walking into a new world, the peacefulness, tranquility, mind-blowing.” The new six mile (9.7km) route connects three nature reserves and includes free hire of three all-terrain mobility scooters, called trampers, from RSPB Leighton Moss. Lucy Barron, from Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, said it allows everyone to “immerse themselves in nature” and see local wildlife…
Local authorities say the UK Government should aim higher on accessible homes minimum targets
May 15, 2026- THIIS- UK
The UK Government is currently considering introducing a minimum target that ensures at least 40 per cent of new housing is delivered to M4(2) accessible and adaptable standards across the country. Ageing Better is among a number of organisations arguing that the minimum target figure needs to be higher to meet the enormous level of need. More than 20 local authorities say the government’s proposed minimum target for accessible housing is not ambitious enough and a higher proportion of accessible housing is achievable. Councils who responded to an Ageing Better survey overwhelmingly agreed that the proposed 40% minimum target put forward as part of reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) could be raised…
Nepal’s parliament is now accessible in sign language—but interpreters face challenges
May 15, 2026 | Source: The Kathmandu Post- Nepal
Gyan Bahadur Thapa, a teacher at Navajyoti Deaf Secondary School in Sindhuli, had long wanted to follow parliamentary debates live like any other citizen. Although he cannot hear, he regularly watches television, uses a mobile phone, reads newspapers and closely follows current affairs. Politics and policymaking have always interested him, particularly the speeches and decisions of leaders elected through public votes. For years, however, understanding live parliamentary proceedings was difficult for him. During broadcasts of House meetings, he depended on others to explain discussions through sign language…
What intimacy looks like with a disability
May 16, 2026 | Source: RNZ- New Zealand
It’s a stormy February night in Adelaide, and Jacqueline Tedmanson is at the hospital with her partner Jackson, waiting to meet their first baby. Despite having a disability, Jacqueline isn’t nervous about the birth. She’s just excited to be having a child, and the couple only hope the child “is funny” rather than “healthy”. As a queer disabled person, burlesque gives Jacqueline Tedmanson, aka Diana Divine, a rare space to be flirty and powerful, without feeling infantilised or fetishised. Jacqueline has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), an incurable and frequently painful condition that causes joints to be overly flexible and prone to dislocation…
Judicial services made more accessible to nation’s persons with disabilities
May 17, 2026 | Source: China Daily- China
Judicial services have been made more accessible to people with disabilities in recent years, thanks to intensified collaboration between courts and disabled persons’ federations. With details of five landmark cases released on Sunday, National Disability Day, the Supreme People’s Court and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation reaffirmed their commitment to better protecting individuals with disabilities by improving access to barrier-free judicial services. In February 2024, the two organizations agreed to improve accessible judicial services for disabled individuals, with the top court stating that safeguarding the legitimate rights of this group is crucial for upholding the rule of law…
Experts demand economic inclusion of people with disabilities
May17, 2026 | Source: Daily Sun Report- Dhaka
Disability rights activists at a meeting called upon both public and private stakeholders to work together to ensure the social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities in Bangladesh on Sunday. Noting that persons with disabilities constitute around 10% of the country’s total population with many still facing economic exclusion, the experts stressed the need for improved access to education, vocational training, technical education and skills development to support their meaningful participation in the job market…

A person on a wheelchair wants to go to a restaurant with their family. However, there are several steps at the restaurant entrance, with no ramp for a wheelchair. Even if they somehow manage to enter, there is no usable toilet facility. In many restaurants, hotels and cafés across the city, this is still a common reality for people with disabilities. The government is now making it mandatory for restaurants, hotels and cafés within city corporation areas to install separate ramps and accessible toilets for people with disabilities…
How walkability study in Tinahely could reshape accessibility across Wicklow’s rural towns
May 17, 2026 | Source: The Irish Independent- Ireland
Tinahely’s community‑led accessibility audit may have taken place over the course of a single morning, but it represents the latest step in a longer process within County Wicklow. This process is shaped by the county’s geography, policy developments and a growing recognition that people with disabilities and older residents need to be central to decisions on town and village planning. The audit in Tinahely was a coordinated exercise involving disabled people, older residents, council staff and local organisations. Participants followed a planned route, identifying features that supported or hindered accessibility…
What’s behind the rise in firings linked to disability discrimination?
May 18, 2026 | Source: South China Morning Post- China
Complaints to Hong Kong’s equality watchdog about firings linked to suspected disability discrimination have more than doubled over the past five years, with concern groups attributing the rise to corporate restructuring and widespread lay-offs amid the economic downturn. The South China Morning Post obtained figures from the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) showing that the watchdog received 490 complaints of alleged disability discrimination in the employment field last year, up 72 per cent from 285 in 2021…
Digital discrimination: Why no Nigerian government website is actually accessible
May 18, 2026 | Source: TechCabal- Nigeria
Mama Tunde has been selling pepper at Mile 12 Market for twenty-two years. Her daughter just graduated from the University of Lagos, the first in the family to hold a degree. Someone tells her the results are on the university website. She opens the page on a fairly used ₦35,000 Android phone, carefully managing her 3G data as it loads. The page is heavy, and when it finally loads, it is filled with formal English text. There is no Yoruba option, not even pidgin that she can slightly understand, and no way to enlarge the letters…
‘An accessible space’: the Chelsea garden visitors can see, hear, feel, taste and touch their way round
May 19, 2026 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Some will want to touch the Stachys byzantina, an evergreen plant with leaves so velvety soft its common name is lamb’s ear. Others will want to smell the star jasmine, taste the plethora of herbs or listen to the “sensory soundscape” inspired by bioelectric signals of the surrounding plants. When the Sightsavers sensory garden opens at the Chelsea flower show this week, designers Peter Karn, Janice Molyneux and Sarah Fisher are hoping that visitors, with disabilities or without, will find it an accessible, inclusive space that engages all their senses…
‘We must prioritise seaside disability access’
May 19, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A wheelchair user from Brighton says she dreams of being able to wake up and decide to go swimming in the sea. Peyton Vellaa swims at the city’s Sea Lanes beachfront pool and gets in using special equipment – but the sea, just metres away, remains out of reach. “I would need multiple volunteers to enable me to get into that water, and then you need equipment and there are certain safety aspects,” Vellaa said. In a study presented to the government on Monday, just 13% of wheelchair users and people with limited mobility around the UK said they were able to reach the water…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
