Aging Population Drives Accessibility Innovations in Transit
May26, 2026 | Source: Passenger Transport
Population trends in the U.S. suggest a busy future for public transportation. Most young people aren’t getting driver’s licenses, families are moving to suburbs, and older adults are aging in place while driving less. Add in the needs of culturally diverse populations, and the age of transit workers—43 percent are 55 or older—and it’s easy to forecast huge demand ahead. The impact of these trends on transit was the focus of the “Demography to Destiny: What Current Demographic Trends Tell Us” General Session at APTA’s 2026 Mobility Conference, moderated by Karen E. Philbrick, executive director, Mineta Transportation Institute…
Colorado moves to fix RTD with board restructure, accessibility mandates
May 27, 2026 | Source: Denver7
Public transportation in the Denver area is about to get a boost, according to Gov. Jared Polis, after the governor signed Senate Bill 26-150 into law aboard a Regional Transportation District bus Tuesday. The bill, introduced to the State Senate in March and sent to Polis’ office last week, promises to modernize the troubled transit district by shaking up RTD’s board structure and sharpening the agency’s focus on accessible transit. “The Denver metropolitan area deserves an A+ transit agency, and I think we all know through our own ridership, through stories from our constituents, through many others, that we are not there, and we really need to energize, improve the efficiency of RTD,” Polis said..
Hollister deploys sidewalk robots to assess accessibility conditions
May 27, 2026 | Source: KSBW
The City of Hollister said that starting Wednesday, residents might see unusual pedestrian traffic around town. A sidewalk assessment robot, Dax Rook, will be monitoring Hollister sidewalks to evaluate accessibility conditions across pedestrian networks and help plan future improvements. “These robots are completely safe and move at walking speed. They are a field data collection tool and do not collect personal data or replace city jobs: people still guide the project, review the results, and make planning decisions,” the city said in a social media post…

More than 340 newspapers block the Wayback Machine. What that means for the future of the internet
May 22, 2026 | Source: Straight Arrow News
The internet is forever, people warn. But leading newspaper companies could change that in a burgeoning war against artificial intelligence chatbots. More than 340 national and local news publishers, from The New York Times to The Idaho Statesman, have blocked the Wayback Machine from archiving their stories due to concerns their proprietary content could get gobbled up by Big Tech companies to train AI tools like ChatGPT. That’s according to a new analysis by the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University, which first reported that leading publishers across the U.S. have cut off access to the digital tool designed to preserve a historic record of the internet in the public interest…
The Populist Paralympian Who Wants to Roll Into the Senate
May 23, 2026 | Source: Mother Jones
It was the final quarter of a US men’s national wheelchair basketball game at the Tokyo Paralympics against Turkey in 2021. Josh Turek was benched for most of the game. Fouled soon after coming in, Turek sank both his free throws to widen the US’ two-point lead in a game it went on to win. Turek, who played in all eight US men’s games at that year’s Paralympics—the team went on to win gold—had no complaints about sitting out most of the game. Ryan Neiswender, Turek’s teammate on that squad, called him a consummate team player…
The Justice Department Just Shut Disabled People Out of Essential Online Services for Another Year
May 24, 2026 | Source: Truthout
A last-minute change from the Department of Justice (DOJ) has outraged disabled people and disability rights groups and could affect access to the ballot box come the midterm elections this November. The agency issued an interim final rule on April 20, pushing back a planned April 24, 2026, deadline for large municipalities to ensure their apps and online offerings are accessible in accordance with certain technical standards. “It is outrageous that the Justice Department thinks that they can delay this regulation for one more year,” Chris Danielsen, a spokesperson for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), told Truthout…
Blind Waymo Users Revel in the Joy of Riding Alone
May 24, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
Ruben Brunt hopped off a ferry, tapped his white cane against the sidewalk and held his phone to his ear to listen for directions. His destination was a white Jaguar idling a few blocks away — with no one behind the wheel. Mr. Brunt, 28, was born with a rare eye disorder. He can’t drive himself, and had never experienced the feeling of being alone in a car — until Waymo’s self-driving vehicles started navigating San Francisco’s hilly streets two years ago. Now Mr. Brunt will occasionally make the hourlong journey across the bay from his home in Solano County, Calif., just to ride in one…
Disability advocates sue over website accessibility delays
May 27, 2026 | Source: Route Fifty
A disability rights group is suing two federal agencies over the delayed implementation of a rule requiring that state and local government websites be accessible to people with disabilities. The National Federation of the Blind filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the U.S. Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services over the decision earlier this month to give governments another year to comply with a rule under the Americans with Disabilities Act. That rule would have required states and localities to ensure their websites meet various internationally recognized standards from the World Wide Web Consortium under Title II of the ADA…
Colorado student disability rights bill awaits governor’s signature
May 27, 2026 | Source: KJCT
A bipartisan bill that would turn federal disability rights law into state law for Colorado public schools awaits Gov. Jared Polis’s signature. Senate Bill 26-125 deals with disability rights in public schools. According to Disability Law Colorado, a non-profit civil rights organization, more than 44,000 students in Colorado rely on accommodations because of a disability. Elli Roth has fought for her daughter Maggie, a fourth grader at Lone Tree Elementary in Denver. Maggie is a right leg amputee. “There is a state mandate that all children in Colorado run a mile,” Roth said. “Every year she would come home crying because she can’t physically run a mile.”
Why your co-worker might be listening to music tuned to 432 hertz
May 28, 2026 | Source: The Associated Press
Yoselin Sanchez has been in chronic pain since she was born with cervical scoliosis. While little eases the discomfort, she’s found ways to distract herself from hurting. She practices yoga. She performs free flow dance. And while she works, she frequently listens to house music tuned to 432 hertz, a frequency lower than typical concert pitch. “Music is medicine. Sound is medicine,” said Sanchez, who provides telehealth services for a healthcare management organization in California. “It helps me focus and be engaged with the patient I’m assisting, and it also helps me relax.”…
What Happens When Your Employer Knows the Diseases You Might Get?
May 28, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
Imagine this scenario: At a routine visit, your doctor administers a new genetic test that shows you have a hugely elevated risk of a heart attack in the future. You’re in shape; you feel fine. But the prediction is in your DNA. The next day, you tell your employer that your doctor wants you to make some adjustments — switch to a less physically taxing role, or maybe lower your stress levels in an effort to save your life. Can your boss legally deny you these accommodations? Under current law, yes. That’s because the federal rules designed to protect against employment and insurance discrimination based on genetics were not written with this technology in mind…
Knoxville ADA Coordinator retiring after nearly 30 years of accessibility advocacy
May 28, 2026 | Source: WBIR
After nearly three decades helping shape accessibility efforts across Knoxville, Stephanie Brewer Cook is retiring from the City of Knoxville. Cook, the city’s Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator, will retire June 30 after 29 years with the city and more than 30 years advocating for disability access and inclusion. “I think I always knew there was an advocate in me that had to do something to increase access and awareness,” Cook said. Cook first became involved through a mayor-appointed disability advisory council before joining the city as a staff member in 1998. She later became the city’s ADA coordinator in 2012…
VA OIG: Improper overrides on disability claims software cause overpayment
May 28, 2026 | Source: FEDSCOOP
The Veterans Benefits Administration improperly distributed tens of thousands of dollars in disability payments and medical costs due to a dozen overrides of the agency’s claims management software, the VA Office of Inspector General revealed in a report published Wednesday. The Veterans Benefits Management System for Rating, or VBMS-R, makes rules-based decisions on veteran service-connected disability claims to the VBA, but can be overridden by processors who think it doesn’t accurately reflect the evidence…
Buc-ee’s in Bastrop sued for claims of disability discrimination
May 28, 2026 | Source: KVUE and C-Store Dive
A well-known Texas-based travel center is being sued for discrimination at one of its Central Texas locations. A federal lawsuit claims Buc-ee’s in Bastrop refused to provide accommodations for an employee with an autoimmune disease before eventually firing him. The suit was filed Tuesday by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which helps enforce laws against the discrimination of employees or job applicants based on factors including race, religion, age and disability…
Federal court rules commute problems do not qualify worker for disability retirement
May 28, 2026 | Source: Human Resources Director
A federal court has drawn a clear line for HR: trouble getting to work is not the same as being unable to do the job. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled on May 27, 2026 that a former FBI clerical employee cannot claim federal disability retirement benefits on the basis that seizures left her unable to drive to her office. The decision sharpens a distinction that matters for any HR team handling disability claims: the law looks at whether an employee can perform the role, not whether the employee can reach the building…
The promise of an appropriate education for every child with a disability is under strain
May 28, 2026 | Source: The Hill
When Congress passed what was then the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975, it made a historic commitment: every child with a disability would receive a free appropriate public education. In exchange for federal funding, states agreed to guarantee procedural protections, individualized programming, and access to the general education in the least restrictive environment. Historically, the Individuals with Disabilities Education or IDEA Act has been a bipartisan priority. Yet today, this covenant is being tested in ways that would have been unimaginable even a decade ago…
Ed Dept wants to end some IDEA data collections. How did stakeholders respond?
May 28, 2026 | Source: K-12 Dive
A U.S. Department of Education proposal to remove certain data collections for racial disparities in special education has drawn opposition from special education organizations, disability rights advocacy groups and a coalition of state attorneys general. The Education Department, in a March 23 Federal Register notice, sought public comment on proposed changes to the federally required State Performance Plans and Annual Performance Reports for special education. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, each state must develop these documents to evaluate their efforts to implement IDEA requirements and detail how it will make improvements…

May 22, 2026 | Source: The Beehive- New Zealand
Programmes aimed at addressing access issues for disabled people in street navigation, reading, housing and sports education through technology will soon get a boost, Disability Issues Minister Louise Upston says. The six successful applicants of the Access Activator pilot programme have been selected. The programme is run through the Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha, in collaboration with start-up hub Creative HQ. Louise Upston says Access Activator is about delivering practical results for people with a variety of accessibility needs. “About one in six people in New Zealand live with a disability, and that number is expected to grow alongside the aging population…
Families call for greater accessibility at Slush Puppie Place
May 22, 2026 | Source: The Kingston Whig Standard- Canada
A group of parents with children who have disabilities is calling on the City of Kingston to make one of its busiest recreation arenas more accessible by installing adult-sized change tables. The families say the lack of proper facilities at Slush Puppie Place forces them to change their children on restroom floors or leave activities early, creating barriers to activities such as sports, concerts, and other community events hosted at the multi-use complex. Rachel Hornbeck’s 11-year-old daughter Harlee, who has physical and cognitive disabilities, is incontinent and can’t use a regular washroom…
Employers could face two-week deadline on disabled workers’ adjustment requests
May 22, 2026 | Source: People Management- UK
Employers could face a mandatory two-week deadline to respond to requests for reasonable adjustments from disabled workers. The cross-party Work and Pensions Committee made the proposal in its Disability at Work report, which warned that too many disabled people continue to face a “hostile environment” at work. The suggested two-week timeframe is in line changes to flexible working measures in the Employment Rights Act, which require employees to respond to employee requests within two weeks…
Accessibility expert: Simple solutions often beat high-tech fixes
May 22, 2026 | Source: ERR- Estonia
Tallinn city specialist and wheelchair user Jako Stein says even well-designed concrete often does more to improve urban accessibility than high-tech solutions. Stein, a senior specialist at the Tallinn Welfare and Healthcare Department, noted that some accessibility features look good on paper but are difficult to use in practice. In Põhja-Tallinn’s Küti Quarter, he approved of a well-designed concrete stairway that can be navigated independently in a wheelchair. “Concrete is a big help to people with mobility disabilities,” he said…
Four children battling rare disease seek government support:Family say poverty and biometric failures blocking ration and disability benefits
May 23, 2026 | Source: Bhaskar- India
A heartbreaking case of a rare genetic disorder has emerged from Rewa district, where four children from the same family are being forced to spend most of their lives inside dark rooms because they cannot tolerate sunlight. The children belong to the family of Sugriv Kori, a resident of Devkhar village in Koriyan Tola under Jawa tehsil. The rare condition has not only affected the colour of their skin and hair but has also severely weakened their eyesight. At an age when children normally attend school and play outdoors, these siblings are struggling to step outside in daylight…

Autism registrations surge eightfold as awareness and support services expand
May 24, 2026 | Source: The Vibes- Malaysia
The number of individuals registered with autism under Malaysia’s Social Welfare Department (JKM) has increased eightfold over the past decade, reflecting what authorities describe as growing public awareness and stronger support systems for children with autism spectrum disorder. Social Welfare Department director-general Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan said registrations involving persons with disabilities (OKU) categorised under autism had reached 90,459 as of April 30 this year, compared with significantly lower figures recorded in 2015…
What’s behind the rise in firings linked to disability discrimination in Hong Kong?
May 24, 2026 | Source: The Star- Hong Kong
Complaints to Hong Kong’s equality watchdog about firings linked to suspected disability discrimination have more than doubled over the past five years, with concern groups attributing the rise to corporate restructuring and widespread lay-offs amid the economic downturn. The South China Morning Post obtained figures from the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) showing that the watchdog received 490 complaints of alleged disability discrimination in the employment field last year, up 72 per cent from 285 in 2021…
The Wheelie Good Walk making countryside accessible
May 24, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A new accessible walk has been created for people who use wheelchairs. The Wheelie Good Walk was launched as part of this year’s Alton Walking Festival in Hampshire and follows a path through the village of Holybourne, along which gates and stiles have been adapted or removed and the ground made even. It was created by mother and daughter Sally and Jannine Stoodley after Sally had a stroke in 2023 and could no longer enjoy her love of walking. “Once you’re in a wheelchair, the world is not accessible to you anymore,” said Sally. “Everywhere you go, you have to think about it.”…
How accessibility shapes one nurse’s approach to care
May 25, 2026 | Source: London Health Sciences Center- Canada
For as long as she can remember, Emma Van Dyk has navigated the world differently than most people. She was born with a genetic condition affecting the clarity of her central vision that even glasses cannot fully correct. As a result, she is considered legally blind. Rather than allowing that reality to limit her ambitions, Van Dyk has built a career around caring for others. Today, she brings that lived experience into her work as a nurse at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). After graduating from Western University in 2024, Van Dyk joined the Nursing Resource Team at Victoria Hospital, where she now works across different units to support staffing needs…
Regional Councillor’s wait for accessible taxi leads to investigation
May 25, 2026 | Source: CityNews- Canada
The City of Mississauga has launched an investigation after a Waterloo regional councillor waited hours for an accessible taxi. Chantal Huinink was in the GTA between April 13 and 15, attending a pair of conferences. The trouble arose when she tried to book an afternoon accessible taxi ride. After being told by a previous driver, the taxi company would schedule a pick-up, she was told over the phone to call back an hour before she needed the drive. Having spent her whole life in a wheelchair and being a regular user of transit, Huinink was concerned there wouldn’t be a taxi available when she needed it…

We are implementing a systematic approach to evaluating the accessibility of state communication so that state decisions, rights, opportunities, and services are accessible to all,” the press service quoted Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna as saying…
How accessible is Eurostar? I tested the journey from London to Paris as a wheelchair user
May 24, 2026 | Source: The Independent- UK and RailAdvent
Train travel gave me my independence. In my early twenties, it opened up a version of the world I hadn’t thought possible. It was the first time I realised I could travel solo as a disabled person, with assistance in place, navigating unfamiliar stations and cities on my own terms. Week after week, I travelled up and down the UK for work, building confidence with every journey. There was a quiet satisfaction in arriving somewhere new, knowing I’d made it happen myself. But that independence has always come with a caveat…
Accessibility is part of the future we are thinking about
May 27, 2026 | Source: National Post- Canada
For builders, envisioning the future is a daily task. Building homes and communities requires strategic long-term thinking while also demanding present-day planning, designing and execution. Being in two states of mind at once presents an opportunity to see the future from where we stand today. As National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) takes shape in Canada this week, it is important to reflect on the state of accessible housing in Ontario and think about its place in the future. According to Statistics Canada (2022), 27 per cent of Canadians aged 15 or older, or eight million people, have one or more disabilities that limit their daily activities…
How a driver who panicked his instructor helped to improve Ukraine’s driving accessibility laws
May 27, 2026 | Source: United Nations Development Programme- Ukraine
The first time Vitalii sat behind the wheel, the driving instructor froze. “(The instructor) said, ‘Turn here.’ But I physically couldn’t,” Vitalii recalls. In 2007, Vitalii sustained a spinal cord injury in an accident. Before that, he was a student in Kyiv – studying, working summer jobs at a sanatorium, doing freelance gigs, DJing at events, and still figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. After his injury, he became a wheelchair user. He also lost mobility in his fingers. “When I came to driving school, I immediately explained that standard hand controls wouldn’t work for me,” he says…
Over a million Irish people have a disability, but nowhere is accessible
May 28, 2026 | Source: Irish Examiner- Ireland
More than 1.1 million people in Ireland — that’s 22% of the population — are living with a disability or long-term condition. That figure from the most recent census has risen dramatically from 643,131 in 2016. I have been in a wheelchair for 37 years, long enough to have watched Ireland grow up, modernise, digitalise, caffeinate itself to death, and still forget to put in ramps. The thing about ageing with a disability is that everyone assumes you have figured it all out by now, as if experience automatically translates into ease…
Disability and electricity dependence: a dispute between rights and the market
May 28, 2026 | Source: Open Global Rights- Argentina
Disruptions to the electricity supply shut down oxygen concentrators. Feeding pumps stop working. Ventilators cease functioning. For people who depend on powered medical equipment, electricity is not just another convenience—it is the difference between life and death. In Argentina, thousands of people depend on electricity to survive. However, energy policies often treat electricity as a market commodity, prioritizing profitability and exposing entire families to constant risk. Between 2022 and 2024, researchers based at Universidad Favaloro conducted a study on quality of life among electricity-dependent families (publication forthcoming)…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
