Making Nature Accessible: Students with Special Needs Attend Camp KEEP
June 25, 2026 | Source: Kern County Superintendent of Schools
A mother deer and her two young fawns stood quietly near the trail as students in KCSOS’s Special Education program arrived at Camp KEEP Ocean last week. For many of the students, it was their first opportunity to experience the coastal outdoor education campus, setting the stage for a day filled with exploration and hands-on learning. Justin Thompson, Senior Director of Special Education, explained the significance of the trip, noting that many students in the program are unable to participate in Camp KEEP’s traditional week-long overnight experience…
Decade-long accessibility push earns Seattle agent fair housing honor
June 26, 2026 | Source: Housing Wire
A decade after addressing a room full of real estate agents as a motivational speaker, Barry Long is being recognized as a 2026 National Association of Realtors (NAR) Fair Housing Champion. Home accessibility search standards that Long co-developed are being adopted by multiple listing services (MLS) nationwide — transforming how homebuyers living with disabilities find properties. Long, a T5 paraplegic who uses a manual wheelchair, was living in Alaska and working as a fishing guide when a motorcycle crash in the early 1990s changed his life…
‘It’s dangerous and it’s going to erode trust’: redesign of US government websites stokes surveillance fears | Trump administration
June 28, 2026 | Source: The Guardian
An opaque White House office staffed largely by veterans of Elon Musk’s “department of government efficiency” (Doge) has quietly rebuilt some of the federal government’s most sensitive websites – for passport applications, voter registration, prescription-drug pricing and children’s savings – in ways critics say appear to violate federal law. The National Design Studio (NDS) was established by a Donald Trump executive order last August, and is led by Trump-aligned Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia and staffed by Doge veterans…
The Next Frontier of Disability Employment Is Right in Front of Us
June 28, 2026 | Source: Keely Cat-Wells, Forbes
The employment-population ratio for people with disabilities reached a record high of 22.7 percent in 2024, the highest level since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking the data in 2008. That is worth celebrating. Across the country, employers are recognizing what the Disabled community has known all along: talent is everywhere. From corporate boardrooms to small businesses, Disabled people are contributing, innovating, and helping drive the economy forward. Rising employment has not closed the wealth gap that sits underneath it.
Cracking the accessibility barrier in the MLS
June 29, 2026 | Source: Real Estate News
Barry Long says he “should be dead.” But the now-mid-life real estate agent somehow escaped death at age 22 after crashing his motorcycle. He has been a paraplegic ever since. Long enrolled in community college following a grueling eight-month hospital stay, his dream of being a fishing and hunting guide seemingly impossible in the wake of the crash. He later challenged himself by traveling the world for over two years — a journey that showed him “what the world was like, getting around in a wheelchair.”…
Trump’s actions signal a move toward institutionalizing people with disabilities, advocates warn
July 1, 2026 | Source: The Associated Press
For decades, disabled people have fought for their rights to go to school and live alongside peers without disabilities — rights that some fear could be losing ground under the Trump administration. Last month, the Department of Education announced it would shift oversight of special education to the Department of Health and Human Services, led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose comments on the limits of disabilities such as autism have drawn sharp rebukes from advocates and lawmakers. Meanwhile, after a White House push to police homelessness, the Department of Justice released guidance that lowered the barrier to institutionalizing any person with a disability…
Making Hawaiian Language More Accessible With Hand Signs
July 1, 2026 | Source: Honolulu Magazine
As the first deaf person to attend UH Mānoa’s Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, Kekai Kaaumoana-Cummings works with a team to develop ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i Kuhi Lima, or Hawaiian language hand gestures. “When I refer to ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i Kuhi Lima, I am talking about Hawaiian language hand signs that are used to support the learning and expression of ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i,” Kaaumoana-Cummings says. “These are different from Hawaiian Sign Language, which is a distinct natural language used within the Deaf community in Hawai‘i.”…
Alford, Correa Introduce Bipartisan “Online Accessibility Act” to Expand Access and Protect Small Businesses
July 1, 2026 | Source: Congressman Mark Alford
Today, Congressman Mark Alford (MO-04) and Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) introduced the Online Accessibility Act, bipartisan legislation to modernize the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for the digital age while protecting small businesses from abusive website lawsuits. The legislation establishes clear, uniform accessibility standards for consumer-facing websites and mobile applications and creates a structured process to ensure issues are fixed—rather than exploited. “Missouri small businesses want to do the right thing—they want their websites accessible to everyone,” said Congressman Alford…
Disabled and chronically ill people are at high risk during a heat wave. Here’s how you can help
July 1, 2026 | Source: GBH
Earlier this summer, Ali Rheaume ended up in urgent care after working at a town festival on a hot and humid day. Rheaume is a brain injury survivor and has several disabilities including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and dysautonomia, which makes it hard for her body to regulate temperature. “I was lethargic and exhausted,” she said. “I ended up having to go to urgent care to get some IV fluids.” For many people with disabilities like Rheaume, extreme heat is a challenge. Research shows that people with disabilities are up to two to four times as likely to be injured or die from extreme weather events…
ISTELive 26: Meeting New Digital Accessibility Guidelines
July 2, 2026 | Source: GovTech
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has long prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities, but a new federal rule now spells out exactly what digital accessibility looks like for public entities, including public schools. The deadlines may still be one to two years away — 2027 or 2028, depending on district size — but one expert at the International Society for Transforming Education (ISTE) conference this week said K-12 leaders should be proactive: audit digital ecosystems, train staff, and make accessibility part of every new digital initiative rather than trying to retrofit everything later…
‘Nothing about us without us!’ | Disability rights advocates, seniors send a message to the next governor amid annual threats to their healthcare
July 2, 2026 | Source: ABC 10
Big cuts and changes to Medi-Cal and In-Home Supportive Services in earlier budget proposals this year were largely avoided in the final version, which lawmakers passed and the Governor signed on Monday. Still—seniors, Californians with disabilities and chronic conditions, and those who support them – have had to come to the Capitol repeatedly in recent years to fight for funding and eligibility around their healthcare. With a new Governor taking office next year, advocates have a message for state leaders…
Employment for people with disabilities holds steady
July 2, 2026 | Source: Kessler Foundation
Employment for people with disabilities held steady in June as job seeking rose notably, pointing to continued resilience in the U.S. labor market amid shifts in the global economy. The finding comes from the July 2026 National Trends in Disability Employment (nTIDE) report issued today. Issued monthly by Kessler Foundation and the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability, nTIDE tracks how broader economic conditions affect employment trends for people with and without disabilities…
Disability in the United States at 250
July 2, 2026 | Source: New America
The American dream is the belief that if any American works hard enough, they can prosper and succeed. The nation celebrates the origins of the American dream this week as we mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which declared that “all men are created equal . . . with certain inalienable Rights [including] Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Though concepts of the American dream have evolved, certain pillars of success are constants: economic stability, a well-paying job, a thriving family, a good education, a house, food on the table, reliable transportation, and good health…

Three ways climate action can be more inclusive for 1.3 billion disabled people
June 26, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- UK
Imagine a global political summit that shapes the future of our planet where one of the most populated countries in the world does not have a voice? This may seem unlikely, but currently 1.3 billion disabled people (nearly the population of China) do not have formal representation at policy talks held by the UN’s climate change body. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) hosts negotiations to limit global greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. Yet, people with disabilities are two to four times more likely to die or be injured in climate-related emergencies such as heatwaves, flooding and storms…
CBS residents welcome $100K accessible transit pilot funding
June 26, 2026 | Source: PNI Atlantic News- Canada
A Conception Bay South (CBS) woman says she’s “very hopeful” her brother will soon be able to have a better quality of life and be able to attend events and get to medical appointments more easily. Teena Bradley Rumbolt has spent years advocating for improved transportation access for her brother, Colin Bradley, who uses a wheelchair. With no wheelchair-accessible taxis based in CBS, getting a driver from St. John’s is a flat fee that could cost the family as much as $250 for a four-kilometre trip to church, depending on the service they use and is unaffordable…
Parents of children with amputations turn to online communities for accessible clothing
June 27, 2026 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Kaila Vella prepared for the worst within weeks of giving birth to her first child last year. The Western Sydney mum gave birth to Braxton at just 25 weeks, when he weighed 670 grams. “He was missing half of his right leg,” she said. “It turned out that he had an amniotic band amputation.” When Braxton was in the womb, an amniotic band, or a loose piece of tissue within the uterus, wrapped around his leg, cutting off circulation and stunting growth. Support organisation Limbs 4 Kids estimates approximately 2,500 Australian children live with an acquired or congenital amputation, otherwise known as a limb difference…
Digital barriers make visitors of Dutch websites stumble
June 27, 2026 | Source: Techxplore- Netherlands
Despite European legislation, many commercial websites still fall short when it comes to meeting the WCAG accessibility standard, Dante Göbbels has found. Göbbels investigated the barriers website visitors encounter, including inaccessible forms and poor contrast, missing alt text for images (important for blind and visually impaired users), and keyboard-unfriendly navigation. His main recommendations are greater awareness, more training, and more enforcement. “The promise of digitalization was that it would make life easier,” Göbbels says. “Instead, many websites throw up digital barriers.”…
Woman plans to file human rights complaint after ‘frustrating battle’ over service dog at Winnipeg restaurant
June 27, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
A Winnipeg woman says businesses need to do more to meet accessibility standards after a staff member at a St. Boniface restaurant argued with her about whether her service dog was allowed inside earlier this month. Randi McKay, who is legally blind, planned to meet a friend for breakfast at a Stella’s restaurant location on Provencher Boulevard along with her service dog Jax on June 14. But when they got there, she said a staff member — who she later found out was a supervisor at the restaurant — repeatedly asked for the six year-old black lab’s certification shortly after the hostess greeted McKay that morning…
RNIB warns accessibility must be built into self-driving ridehail rollout from the outset
June 28, 2026 | Source: Taxi Point- UK
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has urged government and autonomous vehicle developers to ensure accessibility is embedded into self-driving ridehail services from the outset, as public pilots are expected to begin on London’s streets in the coming months. The charity’s Head of Policy, Mike Wordingham, joined parliamentarians and industry representatives at a panel event hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Self-Driving Vehicles to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by autonomous taxi services…
Paralympian praises station’s accessibility upgrade
June 29, 2026 | Source: Yahoo News- UK
Paralympic champion Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson has opened a revamped railway station which she previously called “the hardest part of my journey”. The £14.5m overhaul of Eaglescliffe Station, in Stockton-on-Tees, includes a new bridge between platforms, with three new lifts to improve access, in addition to a new car park with 100 spaces and new indoor spaces. Previously, some disabled passengers had to use long and indirect routes when changing platforms because the ramp to the old bridge was too steep…
Pubs and bars among some of UK’s least accessible places, survey finds
June 29, 2026 | Source: The Drinks Business- UK
A survey of 2,000 adults ranked pubs and bars as some of the least accessible public spaces, with 39% of respondents identifying them as difficult to access. Restaurants and cafés closely followed at 35%. The research, commissioned by mobility specialist Muick Sandy, also found that many people with mobility issues feel excluded from everyday activities. More than four in five (82%) respondents said mobility problems had affected their independence, while half said accessibility issues in their local area prevented them from socialising…
Romania opens first mountain trail accessible to people with visual impairments
June 29, 2026 | Source: Romania Insider- Romania
Romania inaugurated its first mountain trail adapted for people with visual impairments, marking a national first in improving accessibility to its natural landscapes. The pilot route, located in the Ciucaș Mountains, is intended to serve as a model for similar projects across the country, the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) announced. The trail was officially opened on June 27 through a partnership involving DSU, the National Authority for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (ANPD), the Romanian Association of the Blind, the Foundation for SMURD, Salvamont Prahova, Greenpeace Romania, EduCaB, and several other NGOs and private partners.

In our most recent instalment, a childhood educator said she would invest in more funding for public schools in under-resourced neighbourhoods, a disability advocate said she would teach American Sign Language in schools and a Richmond Hill resident shared his plan to scrap the Billy Bishop airport and turn the Toronto Islands into a world-famous historical attraction…
