White House adviser Stephen Miller was the driving force behind the Justice Department’s recent memo authorizing states to institutionalize people with disabilities rather than fund community-based care, said people briefed on the situation. Miller, the president’s powerful deputy chief of staff, was frustrated that the department’s Civil Rights Division was still reaching settlements compelling states to transfer those experiencing mental illness out of institutions, added the individuals, who spoke anonymously out of fear of retaliation…

The T Has Come a Long Way On Its Path to Accessibility – But Many Barriers Remain
June 8, 2026 | Source: Streetsblog Massachusetts
Like most Bostonians, I rely on the MBTA to get around the city. But unlike most Bostonians who walk onto trains and buses and find their seats independently, I use a power wheelchair, and frequently must wait for assistance. There’s a lot of hope involved in navigating a public transportation system that nondisabled people take for granted. When I arrive at a station that has an elevator, I hope it is functional. Then I have to muster up the courage to zoom over the gap between the train and the platform, hoping I don’t get stuck…
Increasing employment in pre-retirement years slows cognitive decline
June 10, 2026 | Source: CEPR
Dementia affects an estimated 6 million Americans. This column uses data from the Health and Retirement Study spanning 1996-2018 to assess the impact of employment before retirement on cognitive decline, which is a key precursor to dementia. The authors find that employment declines driven by local labour demand shocks are associated with cognitive decline of men ages 51-64, suggesting a role for work in slowing cognitive decline. Efforts to promote work at pre-retirement ages would not only reduce reliance on disability insurance and enhance retirement security, but would also promote healthy ageing by delaying cognitive decline…
As America turns 250, one museum makes history possible to touch
June 18, 2026 | Source: NPR
About a dozen visitors pause at the entrance to a gallery filled with statues of 42 men who had gathered here more than two centuries ago for the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The statues appear to be in motion, in conversation or deep in thought. Standing among and touching their life-size figures, hands and faces drops visitors into that consequential historic moment. “They feel like real people,” Grace Engle, a museum educator at the National Constitution Center (NCC), says to the tour group. “Except they might let you touch them a little more than your average individual might on a first meeting.”…

Splitting Up Special Ed and Civil Rights Will Dilute Services for Students, Experts Say
June 25, 2026 | Source: The74
The Trump administration’s decision this week to put Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in charge of special education programs has sparked a sharp backlash from advocates for students with disabilities, who say the move will hurt children and that his views on autism make him unfit for the job. Mr. Kennedy said earlier this year that children with autism would never hold a job, play baseball or go on a date. He quickly walked back the remarks, saying he was only speaking about the most severe cases — only to insist the next day that special education should be moved into his department. “They’re health-related programs rather than particularly educated programs,” Mr. Kennedy said…
Chicago’s Sidewalks Aren’t Accessible for People With Mobility Challenges, Lawsuit Argues. The City Wants the Case Dismissed
June 22, 2026 | Source: WTTW
Getting around Chicago can be extremely difficult for people with a disability — and not just because it’s a complicated, noisy urban environment. In 2023, a federal judge ruled in a class action lawsuit that Chicago’s failure to make its signalized crosswalks accessible to blind and low-vision pedestrians violated the Americans With Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act. Despite decades of cries for help — and New York City losing a similar lawsuit — the city fought the case for years, ultimately failing…
Portlanders with disabilities struggle to find housing that’s both affordable and accessible
June 22, 2026 | Source: KGW
Finding affordable housing in Portland remains a challenge for many residents, but the search is even more difficult for Portlanders living with disabilities. Advocates say there’s a critical shortage of housing that is both affordable and truly accessible. Marcie Knudson is one of those Portlanders with disabilities. She was born with a rare genetic disorder which has greatly impaired her vision over time. “I have retinitis pigmentosa,” Knudson explained. “So, I was born with a disability that I didn’t know I was going to have (later in life).”…
Fifty for 150: Gang of 19 in 1978 makes Colorado a center of disability rights activism
June 22, 2026 | Source: Colorado Newsline
Not long ago American society relegated people with disabilities to broad forms of segregation. It wasn’t until the 1960s that U.S. universities began to admit students with significant disabilities. The first federal program for people with disabilities was enacted less than 100 years ago, with the Social Security Act, and many were institutionalized well into the mid-20th century. Disability rights have come a long way since then. A major turning point was the summer of 1978, when a bold group of Colorado activists took to the streets of Denver…
Supreme Court allows a ruling that ends a tool to protect minority voters in 7 states
June 22, 2026 | Source: NPR
By declining to take up a lower court ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has dealt another blow to the Voting Rights Act. The court announced Monday that it will not review an Arkansas-based lawsuit, leaving in place a 2025 appeals panel ruling that ends a long-used tool for protecting minority voters from discrimination under the landmark law in seven mainly Midwestern states. That ruling found that in the states covered by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals — Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota — private individuals and groups do not have the right to sue to enforce what’s known as Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act…
Could early education bring down rising costs to serve California students with disabilities?
June 23, 2026 | Source: EdSource
At first glance, the preschool classroom in Paso Robles looks like any other: young students sing “Wheels on the Bus,” listen to stories and learn colors and shapes through play. But unlike most preschool classrooms, children with disabilities in this Marie Bauer Early Education Center classroom are learning alongside their peers who do not require special education services. This is unusual in California, where only 1 in 3 students with disabilities receive their preschool education in a classroom with their peers, according to an EdSource analysis of 2024-25 federal education data…
The Catch-22 for disabled workers hidden in Medicaid’s new work requirements
June 23, 2026 | Source: STAT
There’s a particular cruelty buried in the new Medicaid work requirement rules recently proposed by the administration, and it’s received almost no attention. It’s not just the law itself, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which cut Medicaid by nearly $1 trillion last summer. The problem is the regulation implementing those cuts, which goes further than the law requires. When OBBBA passed, Congress was explicit: People with disabilities were exempt from work requirements. The bill’s own champions, including House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.), promised repeatedly that work requirements would not affect disabled people…
Friendship Circle’s Health Ambassadors advocate for accessibility across Pittsburgh
June 24, 2026 | Source: The Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle – The Times of Israel
For many individuals with disabilities, even a routine doctor’s appointment can mean navigating ableist biases, inaccessible resources and rising costs. A new Friendship Circle initiative — Health Ambassadors — empowers young people to overcome these barriers one workshop, interview and clinic visit at a time. The Friendship Circle is a nonprofit organization within the Jewish community that offers young people with a wide range of abilities the opportunity to “be firmly connected in the community through friendships and relationships, access to wellness supports and employment opportunities,” according to the Friendship Circle’s website…
Senate Democrats Rally Against Pro-Institutionalization DOJ Memo
June 25, 2026 | Source: Mother Jones
On Thursday, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) will introduce a resolution that calls for the Department of Justice to rescind a memo issued last week that contests the longstanding interpretation of the Supreme Court’s 1999 Olmstead v. L.C. decision, a landmark case that limits states’ power to compel people to live in psychiatric and other institutions, such as nursing homes. “I am not going to let this administration move us back to a time when people were ripped out of their communities, ripped out of their homes against their wills, and forced into institutions,” Duckworth told me in an interview…
Disablity scandal erupts at UCLA’s law school — as ex-student reveals shocking tactics to game system
June 25, 2026 | Source: New York Post
A staggering quarter of all students at UCLA’s prestigious law school were given extra time in exams after receiving disability accommodations, according to records obtained by The California Post. The records show that, of the law school’s 1,374 students, 308 received extra time on exams during the 2023-24 academic year. That rose to 323 students in 2024-25 – about 24 percent of the entire law school population. The figures were obtained through a public records request by recent graduate Andrew Gomez-Blumenfeld, who argues the accommodation system is increasingly being exploited by students seeking a competitive advantage…

A US military veteran who works for T-Mobile has filed a federal lawsuit alleging the company discriminated against her over a disability and retaliated after she raised concerns. The complaint was filed in the US District Court for the District of South Carolina on June 22, 2026. June 18, 2026 | Source: HR Brew- Canada
Employers in Canada may want to review their disability accommodations policies, or see if they have any, according to a new white paper from the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW). Where in the world? The report is part of CCRW’s Disability Confident Employers campaign, which aims to have 50 employers in Canada pledge to improve workplace accessibility and create better experiences for job applicants and employees. Don’t water down accessibility rules, say campaigners
June 19, 2026 | Source: Housing Digital- UK
Disability and housing groups have warned government planning proposals risk excluding millions of disabled and older people from the housing market. An open letter to housing secretary Steve Reed, coordinated by Habinteg Housing Association’s Insight Group, says a proposed change to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) – requiring only 40% of new homes to meet the M4(2) accessible and adaptable standard – represents “a significant step backwards that risks building the care crisis of tomorrow”…
Disability by David Turner review – a revelatory new history
June 19, 2026 | Source: The Guardian- UK
You could take two outwardly contradictory lessons from the historian David Turner’s new book on disability in the UK. First, that alarmingly little has changed for disabled people since the beginning of the modern age (the book’s first few stories, of 17th-century men and women having to prove they were disabled enough to receive parish support to avoid starvation, will be familiar to anyone who has tried to claim the personal independence payment). And second, that absolutely everything has changed – from the closing of asylums to the advent of prosthetics to the eventual, belated enshrining of disability rights in law…
Bodmin councillors navigate town in disabled experiment
June 19, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
High kerbs, rough roads, and bumpy pavements have caused councillors challenges while navigating a town in a wheelchair and mobility scooter. Disability campaigners challenged leaders and business traders to experience Bodmin, in Cornwall, as a disabled person would. Cornwall Council leader councillor Leigh Frost, and councillor Dan Rogerson, took part in the experiment. High kerbs, rough roads, and bumpy pavements have caused councillors challenges while navigating a town in a wheelchair and mobility scooter…
Saint John disability advocates using ‘lived experience’ to create more accessible spaces
June 20, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Some Saint John disability advocates will be using their own experiences to make spaces throughout the city — and across the country — more accessible. Karen Powell, who lives in Saint John and uses a wheelchair, wants to make changes in a city she said has significant barriers for people with disabilities. “I just find that my city is not disabled-friendly. And the more people that push and bring awareness to the city’s disability needs, the more the city will become disabled-friendly sooner,” she said…
Nature more accessible but work to be done, disability groups say
June 20, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
“When you’re planning time in the countryside and you have access needs, it’s often less about where you want to go and more about where it’s possible to go.” Logistics are just one of the challenges that disabled people can face before taking a trip into rural areas, according to Pippa Stacey. The writer, content creator and charity communications consultant is among those working towards making natural landscapes inclusive places for all. The Yorkshire countryside is a hugely popular draw for visitors annually, especially in the summer months…
Making Heritage Accessible to All: Reimagining Durga Puja Through Inclusion
June 20, 2026 | Source: UNESCO- India
In the heart of Kolkata, a father watched with tears of joy outside a brightly lit pandal. For the first time, his 16-year-old daughter, who lives with a disability, was able to experience the magic of Durga Puja — not from the sidelines, but as a participant. Ramps, braille signage, quiet zones and trained volunteers had transformed exclusion into celebration. This moment, deeply personal yet universally resonant, captures the spirit of a transformative initiative that merges tradition with innovation to make cultural experiences truly inclusive and accessible to all…
Sarawak still has work to do in improving accessibility for persons with disabilities, says Dr Sim
June 21, 2026 | Source: Borneo Post Online- Malaysia
Sarawak still has significant ground to cover in improving infrastructure and accessibility for persons with disabilities (PwDs), particularly members of the deaf community, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. He said the state government’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity aligns with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which seeks to empower all Sarawakians to contribute to the state’s development. “The deaf community is an integral part of Anak Sarawak. In fact, I have always admired them because they are exemplary in the way they embrace life…
Erin farm project aims to make agriculture accessible for those with disabilities
June 22, 2026 | Source: Guelph News- Canada
Volunteering on a farm made a Guelph man realize he doesn’t want to work in an office. What he wants is to bring an agriculture experience to people who, like himself, have disabilities. Chris Lytle worked for 20 years in human rights. Eventually he realized attention on accessibility was focused mostly on more urban settings. Out of every job he’s had, the best one was shovelling manure. As a person with a disability, coming back to farming decades after helping on his family’s cattle farm, it made him realize what’s important…
People with accessibility needs miss out on parkruns due to ‘lack of confidence’
June 22, 2026 | Source: Mirror- UK
Specsavers research has suggested that almost a third of those with visual impairments, hearing loss, mobility issues or social isolation want to try parkrun events. There are more than 1,400 weekly parkrun events across the UK where participants can run, walk or even wheel five kilometres for free. Specsavers’ study of 2,000 people shows four in five with accessibility needs aren’t aware of existing accessibility support at parkrun events, so the firms have teamed up to boost inclusion. One in three (33%) who hadn’t participated in a parkrun reported that they were still keen to try and one in five (21%) feel they’re missing out on social connections or community by not doing…

June 23, 2026 | Source: Manchester Evening News- UK
A 28-year-old autistic and ADHD content creator has raised concerns about accessibility at Manchester Airport after she says she was directed away from the airport’s assisted security lane during a journey through Terminal 2. Ellie Middleton was travelling through Manchester Airport yesterday, Sunday June 21, with her boyfriend on her way to Pula, Croatia, when the incident occurred. She was wearing a sunflower lanyard and carrying a Nimbus access card when she approached security staff and requested use of the assisted lane due to her disability-related needs. Ellie said she was already struggling following last-minute changes to her travel plans…
Advocates say Yellowknife needs to do more for pedestrian accessibility
June 23 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
As summer brings people out onto Yellowknife’s streets, accessibility advocates say the city should do more to make crossings safe for visually impaired pedestrians. That includes installing more pedestrian signals that provide auditory, visual and vibrotactile cues to inform pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired when it’s safe to cross. Of the nineteen intersections in the city, only two are equipped with audible signals, according to a spokesperson for the city. In an email to CBC, the spokesperson says the city has not installed more because of the close spacing of blocks in the downtown core…

Some wheelchair users say they could not purchase accessible World Cup tickets at BC Place despite seeing multiple empty sections on match days. For lifelong soccer fan Kyle Gieni, the FIFA World Cup coming to Vancouver was something he couldn’t miss. “To have the World Cup in your hometown, in your backyard, it goes without saying that you have to watch at least one or two games,” Gieni, a wheelchair user, told CityNews. Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
