‘We work, we travel, we have families’: The Americans with Disabilities Act continues to transform communities
July 26, 2025 | Source: KTVB
Nancy Jensen believes she’d still be living in an abusive group home if it wasn’t shut down in 2004 with the help of the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, which for decades has received federal money to look out for Americans with disabilities. But the flow of funding under the Trump administration is now in question, disability rights groups nationwide say, dampening their mood as Saturday marks the 35th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act. Federal dollars pay for much of their work, including helping people who seek government-funded services and lawsuits now pushing Iowa and Texas toward better community services…

July 26, 2025 | Source: Realtor
Ever since Tony Award-winning actress and singer Ali Stroker became the first person who uses a wheelchair to appear on a Broadway stage, she’s used her voice to help make all spaces more accessible for individuals with disabilities—and that now includes upgrading her own home. Stroker, 38, lives in a suburb of New York City with her husband David Perlow, 37, and 2-year-old son Jesse. Their family is part of the 25% of American households that—according to 2019 U.S. Census Bureau Data—include at least one member with a disability…
Rochester’s deaf community seeks better access to vital services
July 27, 2025 | Source: News10NBC
The Rochester area is home to one of the largest per capita populations of deaf people in the country, according to the city’s website. However, a non-partisan group has raised concerns about the lack of access to essential services for many in the deaf community. Declan Stablow of News10NBC spoke with Davin Searls from the Deaf Equity Council (DEC) about these challenges. The DEC aims to reduce language, accessibility, and cultural barriers faced by the local deaf community. After five years of effort, the council received its charter earlier this year…
Local accessibility advocate turns life experience into crisis coaching and motivation
July 27, 2025 | Source: Cochrane Now
A familiar face in Cochrane is taking on a new mission to support others through life’s hardest moments. Elisa Neven-Pugh, long known for her advocacy around accessibility, has launched a new business focused on crisis support and motivational speaking. “I want to help people find the silver lining,” says Neven-Pugh. “There’s so much stress in the world right now, and sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s even real anymore.” As a quadriplegic, Neven-Pugh knows first-hand how heavy life can feel. She says her goal is to offer short-term help, with about ten sessions designed to stabilize someone’s situation and connect them with the resources they need…
The challenges of navigating Seattle as a disabled person
July 28, 2025 | Source: King5
Tanisha Sepulveda has been living with her disability for 15 years. For her, everything changed after falling off a rope swing at Golden Gardens in 2010. Before, she led an independent life, working 60 hours a week in Seattle restaurants and bakeries, spending as much time as she could with friends, and living in her downtown studio apartment. “I never really planned on diverting from any of that,” Sepulveda said. “Life kind of had its own plans.” Sepulveda’s fall “obliterated” her C5 vertebrae, leaving her quadriplegic. “The transition of being able-bodied to being disabled, it was confusing, it was overwhelming,” she said…
‘Welcome home’: Deaf Saints return to first chapel built for accessibility
July 28, 2025 | Source: The Church News
For more than a century, the Ogden Valley Deaf Branch building has stood as a sacred place for deaf members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On Sunday, July 27, Latter-day Saints and friends gathered one more time in the restored 1917 meetinghouse — many with tears in their eyes and hands raised in love and testimony. The historic building, the first Latter-day Saint chapel — and one of the first buildings in the United States — designed specifically for individuals who are deaf, was recently renovated for a new purpose. It will serve as the meetinghouse for the Church’s Water Tower Correctional Branch — offering a sanctuary for those rebuilding their lives after incarceration…
Voters Can’t Sue for Disability Discrimination, Court Rules
July 28, 2025 | Source: Mother Jones
The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Monday that private citizens have no standing to sue for disability-based violations of the Voting Rights Act of 1965—the landmark federal legislation which protects, among other things, the right to voting assistance for disabled people and voters with low English literacy. The Eighth Circuit’s jurisdiction covers Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota—meaning voters in those states will no longer have any direct remedy when those rights are violated. All but one of the Eighth Circuit’s 11 judges were appointed under Republican administrations, including four Trump appointees from the president’s first term…

He broke his neck, and now he has C4 to C6 tetraplegia. The house he’s moving into is called the Dewayne Model: a two-bedroom, two-bath home with full wheelchair accessibility just south of the hospital…
Accessible transit drives New York economic opportunity
July 31, 2025 | Source: Long Island Business News
There are countless laws or government policy initiatives that people point to as an example of delivering economic prosperity. Whether its FDR’s New Deal, or Eisenhower authorizing construction of a national interstate highway system, another highly consequential law of the past century deserves to be on that list: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. More commonly known as the ADA, the federal civil rights law “prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday activities,” and “guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy employment opportunities, purchase goods and services, and participate in state and local government programs.”…
RTD Board Not Ready to Cut Accessibility Rides Despite Budget Crisis
July 31, 2025 | Source: Denver Westword
Proposed cuts to RTD’s popular paratransit program, Access-on-Demand (AOD), were drastically reduced by the RTD board of directors, which directed staff to further evaluate the proposal. The board met on July 29 to determine the final fate of AOD, which subsidizes costs for users with disabilities to call rideshare or taxi services within the RTD service area. Instead, boardmembers went against the recommendation of RTD staff by decreasing proposed fare increases to AOD users and sending the measure back for further evaluation. “What’s this going to do to our reputation and the trust that we’re trying to rebuild in the community when we make a decision that negatively impacts a critical component of our community?” RTD board member Vince Buzek questioned…

Great challenges sometimes inspire great ideas. That’s the case at one of Ely’s newest resorts, which offers a more accessible gateway to Minnesota’s beloved Boundary Waters. “We’re on beautiful Birch Lake, which is a wilderness paradise,” said Sean Leary, co-owner of North of North Wilderness Resort with his wife, Jill Leary. “We both love this area, but since we’ve been together, we’d never gone up here because of the obstacles.” While the couple loved the Boundary Waters as kids, Sean stopped coming after suffering a spinal cord injury shortly after graduating high school…
disABILITY PRIDE: How accessible is West Michigan?
July 31, 2025 | Source: WOOD TV
Access isn’t only about ramps and doorways. It’s about being able to move, speak, live, learn and belong with independence, safety and dignity. But in West Michigan, how accessible is that reality? To mark Disability Pride Month this July, News 8 looked at the accommodations in Michigan for people with various disabilities and what work is left to make the community accessible to all. Wayne Hizer spent more than 20 years as a bodybuilder. He liked to ride quads, go fishing and kayaking, and shoot. Then in 2017, a teenager blew through a stop sign and T-boned Hizer’s car…

July 25, 2025 | Source: The Cable- Nigeria
A new report on disability inclusion says 28 percent of health facilities in Nigeria lack basic accessibility features for persons with disabilities (PWDs). The state of disability inclusion report (SDIR) 2024 was launched on Friday by Project Enable Africa in collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and the federal ministry of humanitarian and poverty reduction. The report presents an assessment of disability inclusion in Nigeria since the enactment of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2019…
People assume I can’t be a doctor because of my disability
July 26, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
It was the first day of a new rotation. I entered the ward wearing scrubs, my stethoscope draped around my neck and my hospital ID clipped to my shirt. Indistinguishable, I thought, from any other medical student. As I approached the nursing station in my wheelchair, a nurse I hadn’t met before looked up and asked, “Are you here for an appointment?” I paused, momentarily caught off guard. “No,” I replied. “I’m the new medical student starting today.” Her face changed instantly; an apology, an explanation. She said she hadn’t meant anything by it, she had just seen my wheelchair first and assumed I was a patient…
Labour’s electric car plan falls short as millions face accessibility issues – ‘Put off buying’
July 27, 2025 | Source: GB News- UK
A groundbreaking study has exposed significant barriers preventing disabled motorists from embracing electric vehicles, with more than half struggling to handle the weight of public charging cables. Research published by the Electric Vehicle Association England revealed that 51 per cent of drivers with disabilities find ultra-rapid charging cables hard or extremely hard to manage, compared with just 21 per cent of other motorists. The findings emerge as the UK’s charging network expands rapidly, yet only 2.3 per cent of the nation’s 80,000 public charge points meet accessibility standards…

David Stevens has been working at Bedford Industries for almost two decades, but in the past few days, he has felt uncertain about his future. Every Monday to Thursday, he packages boxes for companies such as Doritos and San Remo. “I love it,” he said. “It’s really good just to do hands-on jobs, and it’s really interesting just to do different multiple jobs for different companies.” Asked what his favourite part of going to work was, Mr Stevens said: “It’s just chatting to all my colleagues and having a talk to them about a couple of things … talking about what’s our plans coming up for the weekend and that.”…
Vote informed: Accessibility for people with disabilities
July 28, 2025 | Source: IPN- Chisinau
The electoral bodies, electoral competitors, as well as the central and local public administration are expected to create conditions to ensure access for people with disabilities within the electoral process. Thus, the polling stations for the elections on September 25 must be located in accessible public places, equipped with ramps. The polling stations must be reasonably adapted to the needs of people with mobility disabilities, for example, the width of the doors should allow access for people in wheelchairs. The premises where voting is organized must have heating, in case of low temperatures, and must have good electric lighting…
‘You’ve had long enough’: Cataract surgery still not equally accessible
July 29, 2025 | Source: 1News- New Zealand
Two years after it was announced that all New Zealanders would have the same access to cataract surgery — it hasn’t happened yet for almost half the country. In 2023, then Health Minister Ayesha Verrall announced the points required across the country for patients to get a cataracts operation would be set at 46 for everyone. The points referred to the Clinical Priority Assessment criteria, or CPAC score — a legacy of district health boards, determining who automatically went on the waitlist for elective surgeries. Information released under the Official Information Act showed eight of 20 regions still hadn’t lowered their points threshold for cataract surgery, making it harder to access the operation…
Why schools must embrace inclusion
July 29, 2025 | Source: Deccan Herald- India
Two weeks before my Class 10 board exams, I lost my eyesight. There was no time to request a modified question paper from the CBSE that excluded visual-based questions. I was assigned a scribe. I painstakingly recreated diagrams—from convex to concave mirrors—on rough sheets so my scribe could replicate them. I completed the exam and secured a full CGPA. But when I returned to my school seeking admission to Class 11, I was told, “You are abnormal. We are a normal school.” That was almost a decade ago. But the fight for access, respect, and dignity in India’s school system continues…
How ALS patients and caregivers are missing out on accessibility features in everyday technology
July 29, 2025 | Source: EurekAlert!- Japan
A recent study by Associate Professor Takehisa Hirayama and Professor Osamu Kano from the Department of Neurology at Toho University School of Medicine has revealed a critical gap in the use of accessibility features among people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers. Though over 90% of ALS patients surveyed reported daily use of smartphones, tablets, or computers, many are unaware of the accessibility tools embedded in these devices—tools that could greatly enhance their quality of life as the disease progresses. ALS gradually impairs motor function, making routine communication and interaction with digital devices increasingly difficult…

Greece Accelerates Ferry Accessibility Reforms After Public Outcry
July 30, 2025 | Source: Tovima- Greece
The Greek government is fast-tracking new regulations to improve accessibility on passenger ferries, following a widely condemned incident that exposed serious gaps in the current infrastructure. Greece’s Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced this week that a presidential decree will soon outline mandatory accessibility upgrades for ferries operating in Greece. The move comes in response to an incident in which a child and their caregiver were forced to travel in the ferry’s garage in extreme heat, because there was no ramp to the passenger deck on a route from the island of Thasos to Keramoti…
Many ‘stuck in bed for days without care’, Covid inquiry hears
July 30, 2025 | Source: BBC-UK
A Belfast woman with cerebral palsy has told the Covid-19 Inquiry that living alone in sheltered accommodation during the pandemic without direct contact with family was “really frightening”. Giving evidence on behalf of Disability Action, Joanne Sansome said staff shortages in the care sector meant many of her friends were stuck in bed for days without direct care. Ms Sansome, who campaigns on behalf of those with disabilities, said she stopped counting the days when she reached 700. She described how no one really explained to those with disabilities what was happening and how their lives would be impacted by the virus…

As the curtain rose on Saturday’s matinee of the National Theater Company of Korea’s new Buddhism-themed metadrama play “Sammaekyung,” audio describer Seo Soo-yeon, positioned beneath the stage of the Myeongdong Theater, began painting the first scene through her microphone. “Actors are embodying nature. Some raise their arms and sway like trees in the wind, others lie on their sides, miming a flowing river. They make the sounds of the nature they portray,” she softly said to the handful of audience members, clutching an audio device and wearing a discreet earpiece…
Accessible public transit? Montreal has let me down
July 31, 2025 | Source: Montreal Gazette- Canada
I am a dual Canadian-American citizen studying in Ithaca, N.Y., during the academic year, but living in Montreal since May. Many services in Upstate New York lack full accessibility, including transportation. I thought relocating to Montreal would be different. Unfortunately, I was proved wrong. Though I have several disabilities, I am able to walk to work each day. But I rely on the métro to manoeuvre around the city on a regular basis, and this has made me realize that it must be near impossible for severely impaired individuals to get from Point A to Point B using Montreal’s transit system…
Vast majority of homes built in the last three years are not accessible, new analysis shows

As many as 885,000 more people could now be living in accessible and adaptable properties if legislation requiring higher minimum standards in new build homes had been delivered as promised, new analysis from the Centre for Ageing Better and Habinteg reveals. 29 July marked the three-year anniversary of a UK Government announcement confirming plans to require all new homes to have entrance level step-free access and other accessibility features as a minimum requirement. The government’s decision came after a large-scale consultation and reflects the need for the country’s homes to be accessible and adaptable to support population ageing and growing numbers of older and disabled people to live safely and independently at home…
