Federal Court Rules California Vote-by-Mail Program Discriminates Against Class of Voters with Print Disabilities
October 20, 2026 | Source: Disability Rights Advocates
A federal court has ruled that California’s Vote-by-Mail Program violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and California Government Code section 11135. The program discriminates against blind voters and others with print disabilities by forcing them to depend on another person to return their ballots. In an October 2, 2026 order in California Council of the Blind v. Weber, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim of the Northern District of California granted summary judgment to a statewide class of voters with print disabilities, which include disabilities that prevent a person from reading, marking, holding, or handling a paper ballot…

Election 2026: Need special accommodations to vote? What you need to know.
October 22, 2026 | Source: BridgeDetroit
As early voting gains momentum across North Carolina, one voter is making sure his voice is heard while highlighting the challenges blind and visually impaired voters can face at the polls. Thomas Bass from Fayetteville has been voting for over 20 years and was determined to cast his ballot this year as well. Bass, who is blind and lives alone, said getting to the polls can be difficult. He depends on the Vision Resource Center, which has supported blind access and voting rights since 1939. “We’re straight reading out the paper so they know what it is. If they don’t know what it is, we can’t tell them. We just say, do your best guess that way. But a lot of them like for us to be in there because they trust us in that way,” said Terri Thomas…

Utah Legislature Votes to Make ADA Ramps “More Fun”
October 16, 2026 | Source: Utah Stories
The Utah Legislature passed a bill Wednesday requiring all future ADA-compliant ramps to incorporate “fun drops, amusing twists and turns,” and/or loop-de-loops, a measure lawmakers say will revolutionize accessibility throughout the state. Sen. Carl Wagner, R-Utah County, faces reelection next year and has recently focused heavily on accessibility throughout his local campaign. In an April Senate meeting, Wagner proposed the bill, explaining that he wanted people to associate Utah with words like fun, radical, high-speed, and loop-de-loop…
State police launches program to support individuals with disabilities during encounters
October 16, 2026 | Source: WJAC
Pennsylvania State Police has started offering resources to people with disabilities to help with potential communication barriers during encounters with law enforcement. Blue envelopes are available at local state police stations. These envelopes are designed to contain information like communication preferences, sensory needs and other considerations that could help an officer, according to a release. State police also recommend putting important documents inside of the envelope, such as insurance and registration paperwork, during a traffic stop…
Could Trump Accounts hurt benefits for children with disabilities?
October 19, 2026 | Source: USA TODAY
Trump Accounts, touted by the White House as a game-changer to get children on the path to building savings, can hurt their access to disability benefits as adults if parents aren’t vigilant, financial and legal experts say. Any child under 18-years-old with a Social Security number has an account in their name that can be claimed in the Trump Accounts app. Individuals, companies, state and local governments, and qualified charities can contribute annually up to a combined $5,000 to a Trump Account, but $1,000 of Treasury seed money is only available to U.S. children born between 2025 and 2028…
Report: How to make government websites AI friendly
October 19, 2026 | Source: Route Fifty
Artificial intelligence is altering how constituents interact with their governments and services, as the technology is increasingly woven into benefits administration, public transportation and, now, website navigation, according to a new report. This presents an opportunity for governments to revise their public websites to ensure they remain a relevant source among artificial intelligence-enabled searches. “As more residents turn to AI assistants instead of visiting a government website directly, their ability to find the right answer increasingly depends on if that assistant can actually reach — and correctly interpret — government content,” a new report released last week from Georgetown University’s Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation reads…
Candycopia raises awareness on website ADA Compliance
October 20, 2026 | Source: Wednesday Journal
Candycopia co-owner Alycia Mason shared on social media in early October that the Lake Street candy retailer faced a five-figure legal settlement over website ADA compliance. Mason said in the video she trusted the website developers and the third-party Shopify apps being used as they are a small business and have not heavily invested in their online presence. What she didn’t realize was that the website was only about 92% ADA compliant, opening the store up to a lawsuit. “I just want to share our experience that there are people that are preying on small businesses that don’t have the money to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into development to make sure the site is right, and you get caught and you get a lawsuit…

Tucked away in a former school house in Hempfield Township is a one-stop-shop for the women’s businesses. Their newest venture is called Revival by Indigo, an adaptive custom clothing line designed to make fashion more accessible for people with physical disabilities or medical conditions…
Tempe officials working to make digital services more accessible
October 20, 2026 | Source: Tempe Independent
Tempe residents could soon notice changes when they navigate the city’s website, apply for jobs or read public meeting agendas as officials work to make digital services more accessible before the federal deadline in 2027. The City of Tempe is reviewing thousands of online documents and hundreds of software applications after the U.S. Department of Justice required states and local governments to comply with the web content accessibility guidelines. Although the accessibility standards have existed for years, the federal government made compliance mandatory in 2024 and later extended the deadline for larger governments to April 2027 to give cities more time to prepare…

By Aug. 27, 2026, the totals reached 130 and 75…

October 20, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
Federal regulators are green-lighting a new tool designed to help clinicians identify children with autism. The Food and Drug Administration cleared Neurora this month to inform decisions about diagnosing children ages 18 months to 12 years. The device from Argus Cognitive, Inc. uses more than 100 biometrics to assess whether a child has autism. Clinicians can upload video and audio from typical behavioral assessments to the Neurora portal. The tool measures facial expressions, voice patterns, eye gaze and more to evaluate how a child’s behavior compares to children with and without autism…
How Tech Can Help or Harm Instruction for English Learners With Disabilities
October 20, 2026 | Source: Education Week
From Chromebooks to AI-driven platforms in classrooms, technology plays a big—and often controversial—role in students’ lives. The question of the extent to which tech can support one specific group of students in particular, English learners with disabilities, has become a focus in some school districts, as part of their efforts to help classroom educators working with the population. Tech’s capacity to help or distract from student learning was one of the key discussion points in a recent Education Week webinar on practical strategies district and school leaders and teachers should consider in supporting English learners with disabilities…

October 21, 2026 | Source: Maui News and Alaska Air
Hawaiian Airlines recently hosted a practice flight for more than 250 travelers with disabilities and their families to help them become more comfortable with air travel. The simulation took place Sunday at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, allowing people with disabilities to practice every step of a journey, from check-in to taxiing, according to Alaska Air Group News. Families checked in at the ticket counter, passed through security, found their departure gate and boarded an Airbus A330 that later taxied around the airport…
More than 2 million veterans now have 100% disability ratings: Why the number doubled in 5 years
October 22, 2026 | Source: Lehigh Valley Live
Going from a 90% disability rating to 100% for a veteran with no dependents means a monthly payment increase from $2,362 to $3,939, a difference of $1,576 a month in 2026. That’s $28,348 a year at 90% and $47,263 at 100%, a difference of $18,915. When the 3.6% 2027 cost-of-living adjustment is applied, the estimated monthly payments become $2,447 at 90% and $4,080 at 100%. That is $29,368 a year at 90% and $48,964 at 100%, a difference of $19,596. “The average degree of disability for Veterans increased from 63.1% in 2024 to 65.6% in 2025,” the VA said in its 2027 budget…
One product, no leads: EEOC sues Solera for alleged disability discrimination
October 22, 2026 | Source: Human Resources Director
The EEOC has sued Solera Holdings, alleging it stripped a visually impaired worker’s role to almost nothing – then fired him. The complaint, filed October 20, 2026 in the US District Court for the District of Maryland, tells a story of an employer that allegedly knew about its worker’s disability from day one and still managed to get nearly every part of the accommodation process wrong. The worker has cone rod dystrophy, a degenerative eye disease that substantially limits his ability to see. He started as a solutions advisor at DealerSocket in January 2021, working remotely from his home in Bel Air, Maryland…
Comedians with disabilities set to perform in SF
October 22, 2026 | Source: Keloland
Brian Bretzman from Minnesota has been a part of the comedy world since an early age. “I ended up moving to Boston, which was a pretty big hub for comedy, even in the late 90s, early 2000s. And that’s kind of where I came up in the scene,” ‘The Disableds’ member Brian Bretzman said. After years of meeting other comedians, he decided to start a comedy group called The Disableds, featuring comedians who all have a mental or a physical disability. “I came up with it because I just randomly ran into disabled comedians who were very funny. I ran into one, and I thought, oh, that’s cool. And then another one, and then another one. And I was like, wait a second, maybe we should team up and do something together,” Bretzman said…

New research highlights accessibility challenges for disabled passengers during rail disruption
October 16, 2026 | Source: THIIS Magazine- UK
New analysis from Great British Rail Replacement (GBRR) has highlighted the logistical challenges of responding to major rail disruptions, with accessibility emerging as a key concern for disabled passengers and people with reduced mobility. According to GBRR, part of CMAC Group, rail operators can have as little as 15 to 30 minutes to assess the scale of a major disruption and begin arranging alternative transport for affected passengers. The findings highlight the importance of rapid decision-making, effective coordination and accessible transport provision, particularly for passengers who rely on wheelchair-accessible vehicles or additional assistance when travelling…

October 17, 2026 | Source: Manila Bulletin- Philippines
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers to treat their passengers with disabilities with dignity and respect amid the public outrage over the controversial podcast that took a dig on the son of a popular host and actress. Acting LTFRB Chairman Greg G. Pua, Jr. said part of properly treating persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the public transport system is to ensure accessibility and honor the 20 percent fare discount…

The findings show that 77% of surveyed organisations offer at least one accessibility feature, such as text magnification or compatibility with assistive technologies, while 75% report meeting Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 at Level AA or higher…

October 18, 2026 | Source: The Cable- Africa
The Cable: You have been at the forefront of disability inclusion advocacy for years. Beyond awareness-raising, what concrete changes can you point to that your work has directly influenced — in policy, practice, or institutional behaviour? Olaito: Beyond awareness, our work has contributed to tangible shifts in institutional behaviour and policy conversations. Organisations we have engaged increasingly move from generic diversity rhetoric to structured disability inclusion frameworks, including accessibility audits, reasonable accommodation policies, inclusive communication practices, and revisions of recruitment criteria…
Political candidates are scared of disabled people like me. Here’s what they get wrong
October 18, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
I don’t see a single election issue that reflects my needs as a disabled person. Prove me wrong
October 21, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Political candidates are not sure how to talk to me. I can see it in their eyes — the person does not know how to associate with me. All they see is my power chair. It’s consuming their attention. They are scared of it. I’m speaking and the person in front of me is frozen and not reacting to anything that I am saying. My look also goes a long way in my ongoing political interactions. If I look up just a little bit, being understood becomes that much more difficult. What do I mean? If I am not holding my head straight, or if my pants are crooked or if my foot straps are showing or if I have something on my mouth or chin, it may seem that I do not have all my faculties about me…
Wheelchair user highlights accessibility issues in Keswick
October 18, 2026 | Source: News and Star- UK
A day out with family in the Lake District has sparked a wider conversation about disability access and inclusion. Wheelchair user Annie Garforth raised concerns about accessibility in Keswick after a visit to Kong Adventure’s climbing wall with her grandchildren. A misunderstanding about access arrangements meant she was unable to take part in the activity. Ms Garforth then spent time travelling around Keswick alone in her wheelchair, which highlighted further challenges. She said: “It just became apparent how many businesses are inaccessible if you’re in a wheelchair and the number of times that you have to go into a road because the pavement’s too narrow…
UK digital ID providers improve accessibility, but biometric alternatives lag
October 19, 2026 | Source: Biometric Update- UK
Inclusion is a key piece of any successful digital identity ecosystem. Digital transformation must not leave people behind. As the UK expands its digital identity infrastructure, there will be many questions about who can actually use it, and more about how its public value should be measured and evaluated. In its third annual report on inclusion in the certified digital verification services (DVS) market, the Office for Digital Identities and Attributes (OfDIA) notes improvements in accessibility standards and increased use of accessibility features, but also highlights persistent gaps in biometric alternatives, demographic testing and vouching…
One in four digital ID firms miss accessibility targets and keep hold of demographic data
October 19, 2026 | Source: Public Technology- UK
A survey of the almost 50 firms accredited by government’s digital identity watchdog has found that one in four do not currently meet service accessibility guidelines, while the same amount collect and store sensitive demographic information without making any use of it. The newly published 2026 edition of the annual Inclusion Monitoring Report from government’s Office for Digital Identities and Attributes (OfDIA) finds that 45% of organisations in possession of a formal state-backed trustmark “collect demographic data about their users”…
UK government promises disabled air passengers better safeguards
October 19, 2026 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Disabled passengers will have better safeguards when flying, the government has pledged, including protection from damaged wheelchairs and support from trained staff. A report from an industry-led accessibility group said there was “much more to be done” but progress was being made, a year after a review led by Tanni Grey-Thompson demanded action to improve air travel in response to numerous incidents in which passengers had been left stranded without assistance. The Department for Transport said airports had added more staff training and a new standardised system has been set up to prepare airlines for handling mobility aids…
Vietnam advances AI for disability inclusion
October 20, 2026 | Source: Digital Watch Observatory- Vietnam
Vietnam is expanding the use of AI and digital technologies to improve accessibility, employment, and public services for people with disabilities. The approach combines assistive technologies and digital skills training with proposals to improve accessibility standards and inclusive public services. However, survey findings indicate that limited digital skills and difficulties using online services remain barriers to participation. Vietnam has more than seven million people with disabilities, around 7% of the population…
The ‘activity trap’: fear of losing benefits is stopping some disabled people from exercising
October 20, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- UK
For some people with disabilities, going swimming or attending an exercise class comes with a worry that many others would never consider: could being seen to be physically active lead to their disability benefits being stopped? This fear is known as the activity trap. A new report published by Disability Rights UK draws on research I led at Durham University and developed with disabled people and disability organisations. Of the disabled people we surveyed, 80% worried that being physically active could put their benefits at risk…
Disabled volunteers call for improved accessibility at Asian Para Games
October 21, 2026 | Source: Kyodo News- Japan
There have been calls for the organizers of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games to improve accessibility for disabled volunteers, following criticism that insufficient consideration was given to those volunteering at the Asian Games. Over 100 disabled individuals have volunteered for either the Asian Games, which concluded on Oct. 4, or the Asian Para Games, according to the organizing committee. Sachiko Matsuki, 46, who suffers from retinitis pigmentosa that narrows her field of vision, previously volunteered at international events including the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. At the Asian Games, she guided the Pakistani delegation to its bus stop and arranged taxis…
‘No one gets left behind’: Accessibility shines for Halloween in Cobourg
October 22, 2026 | Source: Grant Haven Media- Canada
Maybe you can still recall the joy of Halloween as a youngster, eagerly awaiting the big night and the chance to possibly stuff a pillowcase full of candies and chocolates, and then delighting in your stash upon your return home from an excursion filled with haunted-inspired homes. Maybe, it’s your kid’s favourite night of the year, trumping Christmas and costumes are planned long in advance. Maybe, it’s a family affair and the whole household rallies around a theme every Halloween. Then, try and imagine what it would mean if for one kid they were forced to wait at the end of a driveway while their siblings or parents had to get their treats for them and watch from afar the joy those kids were able to have…
Health progress in Africa leaves more people living with disabilities: rehabilitation is the next challenge
October 22, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- Africa
Conversations around health progress in Africa usually focus on lives saved. And rightly so. Across the continent, people are living longer than they did a generation ago. Advances in prevention, treatment and public health have reduced deaths from many major diseases and improved survival for millions. But there is another side to this success story that receives far less attention: quality of life. As a physiotherapist and rehabilitation researcher, I am interested not only in whether people survive illness, but also in how they live afterwards…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
