Merrimack councilors to address access for voters with disabilities
October 12, 2026 | Source: Union Leader
Councilors in Merrimack are working to ensure accessibility to polling locations. “We’ve identified and acknowledged that there were problems with the last election, especially related to handicap access. Not only did we notice it, but we certainly heard about some of the concerns,” Town Council chair Nancy Harrington said. Shortly after the election, Harrington said, she asked Town Manager Paul Micali to arrange a meeting with Town Clerk Brenda DuLong and others to make sure officials knew there were accessibility problems…
Election accessibility is dismal in some states, potentially impacting a quarter of US adults in the who are disabled
October 14, 2026 | Source: Nonprofit Quarterly
During Michigan’s 2025 elections, dozens of auditors fanned out across the state, visiting more than 400 polling locations to determine whether disabled voters could likely cast their ballots independently. At first glance, the results seem grim: Only 10 percent of the Election Day polling locations assessed met basic accessibility standards. That means it could be difficult or impossible for the one in three adult Michiganders who are disabled to exercise their right to vote. Last year’s audit in Michigan likely reflects a nationwide trend…
Warner, Mizusawa take disability questions
October 16, 2026 | Source: Fairfax County Times
Last week, Senate candidates Sen. Mark Warner (D) and retired Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa (R) answered policy questions from Virginia’s disability community at the virtual 2026 Statewide Candidate Forum. The forum was hosted by REV UP Virginia, The Arc of Virginia, The Arc of Northern Virginia, and the Autism Society of Northern Virginia. Topics included federal health care, civil rights, education, and economic policies. Mizusawa, to begin, empathized with the disability community, saying that, during his 41 years in uniform, he had to face “stressful mental situations” and that it “took its toll.”…

This Record-Setting Paralympian Discovered How Accessible Grand Rapids Is
October 8, 2026 | Source: AFAR
Anastasia Pagonis has always hated museums. As a kid with visual impairment, she says, “I would be the one doing cartwheels through the hallways because I had nothing to look at. Museums are just so unbelievably visual.” That’s why she went into her visit to the Grand Rapids Public Museum “very closed-minded.” But as she got the opportunity to handle objects and take in exhibits through smell, she realized that this time was different. “It was so hands-on,” Pagonis says, “literally the coolest experience.”…
Muskegon Luge Park becomes first in Michigan to install navigation system for visitors who are blind
October 9, 2026 | Source: Fox 17
A new technology installation at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is helping visitors who are blind or visually impaired navigate trails and learn about their surroundings with greater independence. The Northside Lions Club recently unveiled the Right-Hear system at the park, the first installation of its kind in Michigan. The free smartphone app uses a network of beacons and QR-coded markers placed throughout the trail system. As visitors move along the trails, the app provides audio directions and information about their surroundings…
Breaking barriers: Southern Utah nonprofit makes outdoor adventure accessible to people with disabilities
October 10, 2026 | Source: St. George News
The outdoors is a place for adventure, from kayaking and fishing to river rafting and camping. But for people with disabilities, experiencing those adventures can require adaptations that aren’t always available. A Utah nonprofit is working to change that. Adaptive Outdoor Adventure, founded by Shaylee Ferrell, creates outdoor recreation opportunities for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, from water adventures to family-centered experiences. “I see all their strengths and their abilities and things that they can do, but there are no opportunities for them outside of school to be able to get outside or to be able to get recreation,” Ferrell told St. George News…
U.S. doctors are aging, raising concerns about patient safety
October 12, 2026 | Source: The Washington Post
Richard David Heekin’s long career as an orthopedic surgeon ended catastrophically. Heekin stepped down at 65 after patients accused him of continuing to operate while impaired by a progressive neurological condition that affected his balance and speech. Within three years of his 2020 retirement, at least 522 lawsuits had been filed against him and Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Plaintiffs charged that the hospital knew of the surgeon’s declining condition but allowed him to keep operating…
Disability employment advocates celebrate gains, but face new gaps
October 12, 2026 | Source: Oklahoma City Free Press
October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and advocates for more inclusive hiring. Yet in OKC and beyond, both employers and members of the general public might not always recognize the value and talents that people with disabilities can bring to the workplace. “During October…we want to educate potential employers about the benefits of hiring an individual who has a disability,” said Mark Beutler, Director of Communications at Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS)…
HR giant ordered to pay $400,000 to job applicant who wanted to bring a service dog to work
October 13, 2026 | Source: Business Insider and Inc. and HR Dive
A jury on Friday found the nation’s largest HR group liable for mishandling a job applicant’s request for a disability accommodation. The Society for Human Resource Management, or SHRM, lost on all counts and was hit with a verdict of $400,000 in compensatory damages for failing to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Virginia Human Rights Act, according to a legal filing posted Tuesday. No punitive damages were awarded. The case was tried in Alexandria, Virginia, where SHRM is headquartered…
RJ Mitte deserves to be remembered for so much more than how he died
October 14, 2026 | Source: The Tab
The news that RJ Mitte has died by suicide is undoubtedly heartbreaking. But as I watched headlines roll in and the conversation unfold this morning, I couldn’t help but think of an issue that hits painfully close to home. Mitte, best known for his disability advocacy and for playing Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in Breaking Bad, died aged 34 on Monday, October 12, at his home in Brownsville, Texas. As his representative said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte. At this time, we ask people to respect the privacy of RJ Mitte’s family and close ones.”…
Americans with disabilities worry about proposed changes to major national health survey
October 14, 2026 | Source: The Associated Press
The federal government is planning to dramatically shrink its most influential health survey, and some researchers worry that the changes will underestimate how many Americans are disabled. At least half the survey questions could be axed. The cost-saving change is part of an ongoing effort to slim down the 69-year-old National Health Interview Survey, which for years has been suffering from declining response rates. As many as a quarter of wheelchair users and more than a third of people who are blind or deaf could be miscategorized as not disabled because of the shorter survey, according to some advocates and researchers…
Beauty’s Neurodivergence Blind Spot
October 15, 2026 | Source: Beauty Matter
Roughly 15.5 million US adults have an ADHD diagnosis, and 5.4 million adults have one for autism. However, ADHDers assigned female at birth are typically diagnosed five years later than men, while 80% of autistic women remain undiagnosed by age 18. Over the last decade, awareness of neurodivergence has grown. “Neurodivergent” is an umbrella term coined in the 1990s to describe anyone whose brain or nervous system differs from what is considered neurotypical. Autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, PTSD, and psychosis are all examples, as is AuDHD, the co-occurrence of both autism and ADHD that until 2013 was not diagnostically possible…
Dementia cases to double by 2050. Here’s why
October 15, 2026 | Source: USA TODAY
The number of people developing dementia each year worldwide is expected to more than double by 2050, with women and people in lower-income countries facing higher rates, according to new research. An estimated 11.4 million people developed dementia in 2023. By 2050, that number is projected to reach 24.7 million new cases annually, researchers reported Oct. 12 in the journal JAMA Neurology. The findings highlight the growing need for dementia prevention, diagnosis and care as populations age…
Special education, services for Nebraskans with disabilities targeted in hypothetical education department cuts
October 15, 206 | Source: Nebraska Public Media
Cuts to services for students and adults with disabilities — along with a large reduction in school aid funding — are among hypothetical proposed changes in the Nebraska Department of Education’s budget for the next two fiscal years. The education department’s actual request is an increase for each of the next two years — nearly $5.6 million more for the first year and about $2.4 million more for the second year. Those numbers include an increase in state aid to schools under the Tax Equity and Educational Opportunities Support Act, or TEEOSA…
Study Finds Horseback Riding Improves Behavior For Children With Autism
October 16, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
Riding horses or even just spending time around them can make a big difference for kids with autism, helping to reduce hyperactivity and boost social skills, new research suggests. In a study of 236 children with autism and co-occurring psychiatric conditions, researchers found that participating in either a therapeutic riding program or doing barn activities brought about meaningful benefits. Some kids who participated in the study were assigned to receive therapeutic horseback riding once a week for 10 weeks while others took part in a barn activity group where they saw horses, but did not interact with them…

Ministers’ decision to slash accessible housing targets was ‘unprincipled’, but Timms says they were right
October 8, 2026 | Source: Disability News Service- UK
The disability minister has supported his government’s “unprincipled” decision to slash accessible housing targets set by the last Conservative government. Under plans put forward by Tory ministers, 100 per cent of homes would have had to be built to the M4(2)* accessible housing standard. But the Labour government confirmed in August that it would instead set the minimum figure at just 40 per cent of new homes. And it refused to set any rule at all for how much new housing should be suitable for wheelchair-users…
After War and Displacement, Accessibility Knows No Limits
October 9, 2026 | Source: EVN Report- Armenia
As the conflict in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) reached its peak in September 2023, Vardan Tadevosyan, director of the Lady Cox Rehabilitation Center, was appointed Health Minister. He was called to evacuate patients injured in the largescale attack against the territory and the explosion of a fuel depot outside Stepanakert days later. When he returned to the clinic, it was almost empty. In the space of a day, around 80 staff members and essentially all his patients had fled. “For 24 hours, I was involved in organizing the first-aid treatment [and evacuation] for these people [in the explosion],” he said, recalling the pivotal moment in the conflict, followed by the mass displacement of over 100,000 Artsakh-Armenians…
Bengaluru parks not friendly to persons with disabilities
October 9, 2026 | Source: The New Indian Express- India
An audit of more than 120 public parks across Bengaluru has found gaps in accessibility at entrances, pathways, facilities, signage and play areas. Only 34.8% of the parks allow users to enter without encountering a barrier, while 36.2% have a ramp at the entrance. These are among the findings of the Bengaluru Parks Observatory, an interactive dashboard launched on Friday by Pacta, a Bengaluru-based law firm and policy think tank. Funded by the Australian Consulate and building on Pacta’s existing work on parks and accessibility, the dashboard is billed as India’s first citizen-audited accessibility dashboard for public parks…
SC, Delhi HC notices spotlight persistent accessibility gaps in India decade after disabilities law
October 9, 2026 | Source: The Print- India
Nearly a decade after the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 came into force, accessibility to basic necessities of everyday life continues to remain a challenge for people with disabilities. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued notices in a related matter alleging that persons with disabilities continue to face systemic discrimination across India’s civil aviation sector despite an existing accessibility framework. In another proceeding, the Delhi High Court Thursday issued notices on a plea seeking the issuance of guidelines to ensure that books and reading material are available in accessible formats to persons with disabilities in a time-bound manner…

October 10, 2026 | Source: CityNews- Canada
Tag4Access, an accessibility initiative founded by 16-year-old Prisha Popli, is now available on the App Store and Google Play — a community-driven app she hopes will inspire Canadians to become accessibility advocates. The app features an interactive map in which users can create tags and write about the accessibility barriers or features of a given area. These tags are then reviewed by volunteer accessibility leaders for verification, but also for identifying gaps to create community-led solutions with local accessibility groups…

The newly formed organisation is seeking to address the accessibility challenges facing people with a wide range of disabilities and to help spread awareness in the community…
A minute in wheelchair, a lesson in accessibility
October 11, 2026 | Source: The New Indian Express- India
Sitting in a wheelchair for the first time, Natasha Lily, a Class 12 student of the Government Model Girls HSS, Pattom, was initially taken aback. Ahead of her lay a rough surface, a slanting ramp, and a square-shaped step, before she had to navigate the course back to the starting point. Natasha was not sitting in the wheelchair because of any medical condition; she was taking part in a wheelchair simulation track demonstration, an awareness programme organised by the CanWalk Society and SP Adarsh Foundation at the Manaveeyam Veedhi here on Sunday evening…
Accessible playground to ‘allow all children to play’
October 11, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A playground is to be replaced with one that is accessible to wheelchair users so all children can play together. The playground at Burrow’s Field in Cheltenham – the home site for Leckhampton Rovers FC – is old, said trustee Mark Beaney, and the club hopes to revamp it with accessible play equipment. The club is encouraging schools, businesses and residents to held fund the project and a 12-hour sponsored swing along on Saturday raised more than £1,600. Fahren Peach, whose son has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, said the playground would mean her “three children can play together and no one has to get left out”…
Beyond The Barrier: Building An Accessible Pakistan
October 11, 2026 | Source: The Friday Times- Pakistan
A student using a wheelchair reaches his school but cannot enter because there is no ramp for him to get up the stairs. Every day, he must wait for someone: a family member, teacher or fellow student so that he can get to his classroom. The obstacle is not his wheelchair. It is the building. A visually impaired person faces a similar barrier while performing the most mundane tasks: reading a sign, completing a form, navigating a website. Yet these difficulties are often treated as a consequence of disability rather than a systemic failure of inclusive practices…
‘Artism’ – Making museums accessible for children and young teens with autism
October 11, 2026 | Source: Gulf Today- United Arab Emirates
Inclusion brings richness and vitality to our communities. It embraces individuals of all backgrounds and abilities, including those with diverse learning styles, sensory sensitivities, and developmental differences, ensuring that every voice is recognized and valued. Children on the autism spectrum develop unique ways of communicating, learning, and perceiving the world. These differences should not be regarded as deficits or conditions to be corrected; rather, they reflect the rich diversity of human experience and understanding…
Surrey couple says accessibility barriers prevented them from voting
October 12, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Glenda Hyatt and her husband Darryl Hyatt, who both use electric mobility aids to get around, were heading to cast their ballots and have their say in Surrey’s civic election Saturday — but after backtracking several times, they still couldn’t find a way into the voting station. “We continued along until we saw open doors,” said Glenda, using a text-to-speech device. “But what lay between us was a choice between going up a set of stairs or going up a grassy hill.” Glenda told CBC News she has tipped her scooter over on uneven ground before, breaking her arm…
Overseas, digital accessibility is becoming enforceable. New Zealand should not wait
October 12, 2026 | Source: ODT- New Zealand
Around the world, digital accessibility is moving from practice to legal accountability. In Europe, new accessibility requirements are being tested through the courts. In June, a French court ordered Carrefour (a large supermarket) to make its e-commerce website and mobile app accessible within six months, with financial penalties for delay. In the United States, companies continue to face legal challenges over services that disabled people cannot use. New Zealand should pay attention. These cases show that digital accessibility is no longer simply a matter of goodwill or website design…
Rick Hansen: Accessibility must be an election priority in B.C.
October 14, 2026 | Source: Vancouver Sun- Canada
Forty years ago, I began the Man In Motion World Tour with a simple goal: to challenge perceptions about disability and help create a world without barriers. Over 26 months, I wheeled through 34 countries and more than 40,000 kilometres. Along the way, I met people whose lives were limited not by their disabilities, but by the environments around them. I encountered stairs where there should have been ramps, buildings that welcomed some people while excluding others, and communities that spoke about inclusion without designing for it…
Virgin Australia moves to ‘take accessibility seriously’
October 15, 2026 | Source: Australian Aviation- Australia
Virgin Australia has engaged external disability training organisations following an incident with a disabled passenger earlier this year. Disability advocate Shane Hryhorec was offloaded from a Virgin flight in August after cabin crew mistook his wheelchair’s SmartDrive power assist for a battery, with the airline later apologising when Hryhorec posted a video of his experience. In a recent video update, Hryhorec said there is “clearly a lot of work that needs to be done to make flying truly inclusive for people with disabilities”, but that Virgin had “acknowledged that they got this wrong”…
UK report calls for bus stop accessibility audits to improve disabled passengers’ journeys
October 15, 2026 | Source: Zag Daily- UK
A new report from Campaign for Better Transport is calling for UK local authorities to audit bus stops and prioritise accessibility improvements. 15% of people with visual impairments and 18% of those with mobility impairments find bus shelters easy to use, with fragmented responsibilities and limited funding holding back improvements. The report cites previous research finding that 40% of disabled bus users have experienced inadequate stops, while 37% of disabled people report a lack of real-time information as a barrier to travel…
