Man completes 360-mile Erie Canalway journey to promote trail accessibility
September 30, 2026 | Source: WGRZ
Ian Mackay is traveling 351 miles in his wheelchair along the Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo to highlight the importance of accessibility in nature. Mackay, who is paralyzed from the neck down, has not let his disability stop him from exploring the outdoors. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with him on his stop in Newark about his journey and why he is passionate about accessible infrastructure. “I was riding my bike and I went a little bit too fast and hit a tree and broke my neck. But sitting in that hospital bed, you’re thinking about what the heck is the rest of my life going to look like? And, I wish I knew that, you know, what I’d be doing now,” Mackay said…
How MLB is making ballparks more accessible for fans with disabilities
October 1, 2026 | Source: MLB.com
Major League Baseball and its clubs are continuing efforts to make the game more accessible and inclusive for fans with disabilities, from sensory resources and accessible technology to staff training and dedicated spaces at ballparks. More than one in four adults in the United States and one in six people worldwide have some type of disability. MLB and its clubs work with venues to highlight resources available to fans, including at jewel events such as the World Baseball Classic, All-Star Week and Field of Dreams…

One of One: How Paralyzed Veterans of America Has Shaped the Nation for 80 Years — And Continues to Today
September 23, 2026 | Source: RollingStone
For people with disabilities, accessibility is not simply a convenience. It is a fundamental civil right, and at its most basic, a measure of freedom: the freedom to work, travel, attend events, and enter a building. When a doorway, airplane, restroom, workplace, or public space is inaccessible, that freedom is restricted. For over 80 years, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) has fought to remove those barriers. Founded in 1946 by veterans who returned from World War II with spinal cord injuries, PVA was created to help disabled veterans rebuild their lives in a country that was not designed with them in mind…
Two students go above and beyond for National Accessibility Week project
September 23, 2026 | Source: Upper Grand District School Board
Last school year, two students from Elora Public School were presented with a project by teacher Jennifer Morris. The goal of this project was to get students thinking about helping people with accessibility needs during National Accessibility Week in May. Grade 8 students Owen E., and Rayyan S., came up with the idea of building a robotic car that could speak to an accessibility device that one of their peers uses at the school. After brainstorming the idea, Owen and Rayyan presented Morris with the idea of actually building a physical robotic car…
We need to change the way we talk about digital accessibility
September 24, 2026 | Source: Route Fifty
There’s been a growing trend in the world of digital accessibility, shifting attention toward legal compliance and away from what actually makes services usable. As a result, some governments get accessibility wrong, not because they don’t care, but because they approach it the wrong way. Digital accessibility is the not-so-radical idea that everyone, including those living with disabilities, should be able to find and use online government services. Yet anyone who has tried to apply for a public benefit, report a problem, or access information online knows how confusing and frustrating it can be, and for some, nearly impossible…
Blind rider calls for safer bus stops as Port Arthur pushes accessibility upgrades
September 24, 2026 | Source: Fox 4 Beaumont
For Melissa Jackson, riding the Port Arthur Transit system is not a convenience — it is how she gets through daily life after losing her eyesight. But she said many bus stops across the city are difficult or impossible for her to use safely. “As a person with a disability that rides the bus all the time, I need a clear path to the bus stop,” Jackson said. Jackson said she depends on the bus to get around during the week. “I’ll ride the bus sometimes Monday through Friday. That’s my lifeline. That’s how I’m able to get out,” she said…
What civil rights enforcement cuts mean for students with disabilities – fewer staff, closed offices, longer waits
September 25, 2026 | Source: The Conversation
Felicita Piñón weighed just 1 pound at birth. She was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy that requires her to use a power wheelchair, and she also has learning and emotional challenges. Yet despite these obstacles, Felicita, now an eighth grade student, is just like any other happy, active teenager who hasn’t let her disability limit her. She also did something remarkable that’s not typical of most teens – in 2025, she testified against a school voucher bill at the Texas Capitol. But in 2024, when Felicita wanted to join a cheerleading team at her Crowley, Texas, middle school, her mother, Liz Piñón, said the school was not willing to make accommodations for her, as she felt federal disabilities laws required…
NBA Star Steph Curry Didn’t Realize His Blurry Vision Was a Sign of an Eye Disease
September 25, 2026 | Source: Healthline
Twelve-time NBA All-Star and two-time MVP Stephen Curry is known for leading the Golden State Warriors to four NBA championships. In addition to basketball accolades, being part of the Warriors dynasty made him aware of an eye condition he was living with called keratoconus (KC). The condition causes the cornea to thin and bulge outward into an irregular cone shape instead of staying round. This can cause blurry or distorted vision, increased sensitivity to light, glare and nighttime halos, frequent or rapid changes in eyeglass prescription, and eye irritation or redness…

Websites ‘in jeopardy’ amid U.S. Web Design System takeover, coalition tells GSA
September 29, 2026 | Source: FEDSCOOP
A Trump-aligned team has taken control of the U.S. Web Design System with plans to automate accessibility testing, per public activity on a GitHub repository. While the end goal isn’t entirely clear, accessibility experts say they already have dire concerns about the impact. “Immediately, USWDS went from something I would recommend to something I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole,” said Sheri Byrne-Haber, director of accessibility projects and strategy at AccessAbility Officer. The USWDS is a roughly decade-old federal service housed within the General Services Administration’s Technology Transformation Services that aims to make it easier to keep government websites up-to-date…

September 25, 2026 | Source: Rails to Trails Conservancy
Describing herself as “a vibrant Italian who loves great food and the great outdoors,” Juliette Rizzo recounted a Pennsylvania trail she explored with a park ranger and another person in a power wheelchair who helped her identify—and nibble on!—trailside herbs in a foraging adventure she fondly remembers. Beyond the aromas of herbs and the splashes of color from flowers, she recalled, “I got to apply another sense to trails—that of taste.” Looking beyond the typical use-case scenario for a trail is pure Rizzo…

September 26, 2026 | Source: Cherry Hill Courier-Post
New Jersey education organizations have come together to release the Inclusion Guide for Arts Education, a new statewide resource designed to ensure that students with disabilities are fully included in art classes. All in for Inclusive Education, Arts Ed NJ and the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) collaborated on the guide and announced its release Sept. 24. The guide grew out of conversations with families and educators across New Jersey. It addresses the challenge by guiding questions, illustrative examples, and asset-based systems and structures…
Trump Administration Gets OK To Scale Back Disability Protections
September 28, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop and AAPD
The federal government will do away with rules requiring that people with disabilities be served in the community under a settlement with a handful of states that advocates say sidesteps decades of precedent. U.S. District Judge James W. Hendrix approved an agreement late last week between federal officials and Texas, Alaska, Florida, Louisiana and Montana to remove references to “most integrated setting” in a 2024 update to Department of Health and Human Services’ regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act…
Early Retirement Might Not Be Best For The Brain, Study Suggests
September 28, 2026 | Source: StudyFinds, Research led by Erika T. Beidelman (Columbia University)
Women who retired early or spent long stretches outside the workforce in their fifties and sixties had nearly double the odds of being classified with mild cognitive impairment or dementia years later, according to new research. People who stayed employed despite repeatedly reporting a high perceived chance of losing their jobs showed no such pattern. That result runs counter to what most people would predict. Researchers reconstructed employment histories from data collected between 1998 and 2014, then compared those patterns with cognitive testing from 2016…
Trump just cut federal hiring rules. Will disabled job gains vanish?
September 29, 2026 | Source: USA Today
For Alicia Deal, disability advocacy is deeply personal, forged through years of fighting the very workplace barriers she works to dismantle. Deaf and hard of hearing since childhood, Deal later learned she has ADHD and is autistic. She says she has had to fight for basic workplace accommodations, such as caption phones, part-time remote work, and quiet workspaces with low lighting. Her personal experience mirrors a broader crisis. After taking time off to recover from an illness nearly three years ago, she has been unable to find work despite holding advanced degrees…
As federal deadlines shift, officials say digital accessibility still matters for state governments despite gaps in funding, leadership
September 29, 2026 | Source: STATESCOOP
Amid shifting federal deadlines on compliance with digital accessibility standards and gaps across funding and accessibility leadership models, state officials say governments should still treat the matter as high risk and high priority. Accessibility appeared for the first time on NASCIO’s top 10 priorities list last year at spot 10 and was a central theme throughout last year’s annual conference. This year it moved up to number six on the 2026 State CIO Top 10, indicating its growing influence on state digital operations…
Federal court allows lawsuit challenging exclusion of blind jurors in New York
September 29, 2026 | Source: NY Daily Record
A federal court judge in the Eastern District of New York has substantially denied an attempt to dismiss a lawsuit by a Brooklyn man and the National Federation of the Blind against the New York State Unified Court System and the Kings County Commissioner of Jurors. The lawsuit, filed in March 2025, challenges the alleged systemic discrimination against blind individuals who report for jury duty. Although Judge Ramon E. Reyes Jr. dismissed the National Federation of the Blind and the Kings County commissioner of jurors as parties, and some state law claims, he found that the named plaintiff, Albert Elia, adequately alleged a violation under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act…
Accessibility adviser talks importance of service dogs, answers community questions
October 1, 2026 | Source: The Daily Northwestern
Evanston accessibility adviser Alice Eakes educated community members on the importance of service animals at the Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto Community Center on Wednesday. On the last day of National Service Dog Month, the event encouraged attendees to ask Eakes questions, including about her service dog of nearly nine years, Windy. Service animals and emotional support animals, Eakes said, are not the same. She said service animals undergo training to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities and are federally protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Emotional support animals often focus on providing their owners comfort…
Jack Fact — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 percent of Americans experience mobility limitations and approximately 7 percent require assistance with independent living. In addition, roughly 40 percent of adults aged 65 and older have a disability, and the numbers are only going up. This can be everything from loss of vision to more severe conditions like cerebral palsy.

CITAD pushes accessible government websites for Nigerians with disabilities
September 22, 2026 | Source: Streamline- Nigeria
Nigerian civil society group CITAD has called on federal ministries, departments and agencies to bring government websites and digital platforms into compliance with accessibility standards, after an assessment of about 150 government websites and portals found barriers for persons with disabilities. The call came at a stakeholders’ validation meeting in Abuja organised by the Centre for Information Technology and Development to review findings from the assessment. Hamza Aminu, CITAD’s coordinator for persons with disabilities, said visually impaired users of screen readers encountered content incompatible with assistive technologies…
Skilling Up, Accessibility Down: The Contradiction at the Heart of Budget 2026’s Disability Agenda
September 23, 2026 | Source: Countercurrents- India
For years, India’s disability budget has been read through a single lens: how much welfare cash reaches people with disabilities, and how little of it there is. Union Budget 2026-27 tries to change that conversation. Two new flagship schemes, the Divyangjan Kaushal Yojana and the Divyang Sahara Yojana, reframe disability spending as an investment in workers rather than a handout to dependents. It is a genuine philosophical shift. Whether the numbers back it up is a different question. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), which sits under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has been allocated ₹1,669.72 crore for 2026-27, up nearly 30 percent…
Neet with a disability: what’s holding back visually impaired young people who want to work
September 24, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- UK
Through my research I have had the fortune of following 80 young people with vision impairment over 11 years. I tracked their journey from school through to adulthood, speaking at regular intervals to establish what had happened since we last spoke, what had gone well and what could have been improved. The aim was to observe the different pathways they followed and their experiences of them. Despite achieving relatively well academically in comparison to other Send (special educational needs and disabilities) groups, young people with vision impairment have persistently poor employment rates and are particularly vulnerable to becoming economically inactive…
Accessibility: Europe’s hidden growth engine
September 24, 2026 | Source: POLITICO- Europe
Europe faces major challenges to its competitiveness, including low productivity growth, labour shortages, demographic decline and technological gaps. While these issues dominate economic discussions, a significant opportunity often remains overlooked: accessibility. Around 90 million people in the European Union live with disabilities, and this number is expected to increase as the population ages. Yet employment rates among people with disabilities remain far below the EU average, leaving a substantial pool of talent, skills and purchasing power underutilized…
TIFF welcomed tons of crowds on the TTC and GO Train, but this content creator is calling out Toronto transit for inaccessibility
September 25, 2026 | Source: Now- Canada
TIFF brought huge crowds to Toronto, but accessibility issues across the TTC and GO Train made commuting especially difficult for some attendees living with disabilities. Local content creator Lil Gabi D. shared her experience, saying multiple elevators were out of service and made it difficult to travel between subway lines and reach friends in the Danforth area. Gabi says accessibility should be considered during major events like TIFF, and wants elevators repaired one at a time so people aren’t left without accessible routes for months…
Publishing conference looked to support book accessibility
September 25, 2026 | Source: Printweek- UK
A number of major publishing industry companies and figures came together at an event last week to consider how books can be made more available to all. The Accessible Publishing Conference was organised by book printer CPI in partnership with The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), the UK’s biggest provider of free accessible books. The aim of the conference was to map out a future where books are made fully accessible for blind and partially sighted people and those with print disabilities like dyslexia…
Wheelchair users hit by shortage of accessible taxis
September 27, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
When Janice Johnstone wants to go for a night out in Dumfries, it can turn into something of a military operation. There is just one wheelchair-accessible taxi available to take her anywhere, so she has to book him days in advance in order to be sure of making any appointment. A last minute plan, which many of us might take for granted, is not something she can even consider. “You can’t do anything on the spur of the moment – not at all,” she said. Janice – who raised the issue via the BBC’s Your Voice service – said it was only in the past couple of years that she had realised how big an issue this was…
Sydney nightclub Club 77 redesigns venue with accessibility front of mind
September 27, 2026 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Lana Zilla has been a DJ in Sydney for the better part of 15 years, but lately, they have not been behind the decks as much. They have what they describe as “dynamic” or “fluctuating” disabilities, which means sometimes they require mobility aids such as a walker or a stick. “I haven’t been DJ’ing, because it can be hard to ask for [accommodations],” they said. At the clubs they do play at, Mx Zilla said generally, accessibility was “not great”. It is an issue that has prompted Dane Gorrel, who owns Club 77 in Darlinghurst, to make some major changes…
Disability advocacy group calls on Winnipeg council candidates to focus on accessibility
September 28, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
A Winnipeg campaign is looking to make the city more accessible, starting with its elections. In the lead-up to the Oct. 28 civic election, the Accessible City Vote campaign, launched by the Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities, asked disabled voters and representative organizations what they wanted to see from city councillors. The responses have been sent to all candidates running for mayor and city councillor, along with questions on how they would implement the City of Winnipeg’s accessibility plan and strengthen the city’s accessibility…
Most disabled passengers say rail replacement services are not fully accessible
September 28, 2026 | Source: Independent- UK
Fewer than three per cent of disabled train passengers consider rail replacement services fully accessible, according to research from a service that provides them. Data from Great British Rail Replacement (GBRR), part of the CMAC Group, found that of 145 disabled UK rail users, just 2.8 per cent said rail replacement services were fully accessible. Around 66 per cent of disabled passengers reported a deteriorating experience in the past year, with 30 per cent left without a viable alternative during disruption, added the GBRR Rail Accessibility White Paper…

September 28, 2026 | Source: United Nations Development Programme- Ukraine
A total of 169 public servants from Ukraine’s Kyiv, Odesa and Ternopil regions have completed digital accessibility training delivered by the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The trainees will now help ensure that public websites, online services, and digital content within their institutions are easily accessible to everyone – including people with visual, hearing, and cognitive impairments. Held between July and September 2026, the training brought together representatives of state and local government authorities responsible for developing content and managing the web resources of public institutions…
Nagoya’s Universal Environment Enables Disabled Mobility Daily
September 28, 2026 | Source: The Chosun- Japan
It has been ten days since I arrived in Nagoya, Japan, to cover the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. This event has turned the journey to venues into a task itself, as stadiums are scattered across Japan—not just in Nagoya but also in Shizuoka, Tokyo, and Osaka. To cover multiple sports, I frequently use public transportation, often encountering people with disabilities moving in wheelchairs. Scenes of station staff or bus drivers assisting wheelchair users caught my eye. On September 25 at Nagoya Meieki Station, a station worker waited with a portable ramp (temporary slope) near the door where a wheelchair user was boarding or alighting…
Local gov’t improves accessibility for visually impaired individuals
September 28, 2026 | Source: Bastille Post Global- China
Beijing resident Wang Zhigang lost his vision five years ago to retinitis pigmentosa, a group of rare, inherited genetic eye disorders. He had suffered from the disease for years, and gradually lost all sight at the age of 50. “It wasn’t just a small change. It was a complete change in my life. At first, I simply couldn’t accept it. Luckily, I had some time to prepare. But the biggest problem was, I didn’t know how to live in the society anymore. How should I position myself? How could I even go outside?” he said…
New Irish language tool makes school more accessible for autistic children
September 29, 2026 | Source: Phys.org- Ireland
A new Irish-language tool developed by researchers at Trinity College Dublin is allowing autistic children from Irish-language communities to participate more fully in school and their communities. “Geabaire,” the Irish word for “chatterbox,” is a symbol-based tool that allows children who are non-speaking or minimally speaking to generate Irish words and sentences that are then spoken aloud by synthetic voices. The tool is a “game changer for autistic children from Irish-language communities,” according to professors Neasa Ní Chiaráin and Emily Barnes of Trinity College Dublin, who are leading the Geabaire project at Trinity’s ABAIR research initiative…
‘It’s mind-boggling’: Accessibility advocate praises finished result of Mulock Park
September 30, 2026 | Source: NewmarketToday- Canada
Newmarket accessibility advocate Steve Foglia said it is rare for someone in a wheelchair to reach a second-floor balcony and enjoy the scenery. But with an elevator and accessible ramps, including one that provides direct access to the balcony, Foglia can enjoy the view from the historic Mulock House at Mulock Park. It is the result of years of work to ensure that the new park would be as accessible as possible, by both town staff and the accessibility advisory committee that Foglia chairs. “To be able to accomplish this on a historical building, it’s mind-boggling,” Foglia said…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
