Directed by Renato Amoroso, the docu-style film follows four individuals living with the disease, each explaining how the iPhone 16 Pro’s Action Mode and Voice Control features have allowed them to record steady video despite their tremors…
What it means to have a woman in a wheelchair featured on U.S. currency
August 21, 2025 | Source: The 19th News
The late disability justice co-founder and activist Stacey Park Milbern is the latest pioneering woman to receive her own quarter from the U.S. Mint. Milbern is the first woman in a wheelchair featured on U.S. currency and the first person whose wheelchair is actually shown. On August 13, nearly 100 disability advocates, family and friends gathered at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to celebrate the quarter’s release. “Stacey is not the first wheelchair user on currency. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has been featured on the dime continuously since 1946, but he is presented as a disembodied head,” Maria Town, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities or AAPD, told The 19th…

Blind comedian highlights accessibility barriers at Edinburgh Fringe
August 20, 2025 | Source: RNIB- Scotland
Performing at the world’s largest arts festival is no small feat. But for blind comedian Jamie MacDonald, just getting to his venue each day reveals a challenge that blind and partially sighted people face every day: getting to work. Jamie, who is blind due to a degenerative eye condition, is returning to the Edinburgh Fringe with a brand-new show. Navigating busy streets, temporary venues, and the unpredictable festival layout can be difficult without the support that many sighted performers might never need to consider. “Getting about Edinburgh is already a total nightmare for blind people and folk with mobility issues,” Jamie says…

Ben’s Beans Serves Up Community For Adults With Disabilities
August 12, 2025 | Source: Westborough, MA Patch
Nearly one year after its opening, a coffee shop in Westborough has become a hot spot in the community. Ben’s Beans, which opened in September 2024, doubles as a coffee shop and a hospitality learning lab for adults. The cafe operates through Post 22, which is a vocational training and employment program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they transition into life after turning 22 years old. Post 22 was founded by Christine Simpson when she was told it would be “challenging” to find a day program for her son. His name is Ben, and he was born with a rare disorder called EEF1A2…
Missouri doctoral student takes on fashion accessibility for blind people
August 14, 2025 | Source: KOMU
Missouri doctoral student Emma Nicoson says fashion has been at the center of her life. “When I was 9 years old, I asked for a sewing machine and I just started ripping things apart — and I drove my parents crazy,” Nicoson said. Growing up in the small town of Brazil, Indiana, Nicoson found her passion and a best friend. “It’s funny because I know her parents’ name, but I still call them Mr. and Ms. Nicoson, and I think I’ve done that since I’ve been 15,” Aaron See, a longtime friend of Nicoson’s, said. “She’s going to be part of my life and my soon-to-be son’s life until I kick the bucket.”…
Aging 1930s Boardwalk, Lack of Elevators a US Open Nightmare for Disabled Tennis Fans
August 18, 2025 | Source: Streetsblog NYC
Now serving: splinters. Deuce to anyone with wheels or knees. Tennis fans from across the world will take transit to this month’s U.S. Open — but if they depend on a wheelchair or other mobility, they might have trouble getting there: The 7 train and Long Island Rail Road stops at Mets-Willets Point station are rife with barriers that make the massive sports complex a nightmare for the disabled. Neither the subway nor LIRR station have elevators. Wheelchair users can exit the subway via a ramp off the Passerelle Boardwalk that connects to Flushing Meadows Corona Park USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center complex, but only if they took an eastbound train and only on Mets gamedays…
After life-changing diagnosis, Mendocino woman builds community through accessible walks
August 18, 2025 | Source: The Mendocino Voice
Leslie’s Accessible Walks offer a unique kind of walking adventure, highlighting accessible coastal routes, relaxed group strolls, and the area’s most charming scenery. Mendocino resident Leslie Krongold created the program as a way to bring people together after a life-changing personal experience that left them unable to navigate rough terrain easily. Krongold herself underwent such an experience shortly after she and her wife and partner, Jessica Nussbaum, relocated from Alameda, Calif., to the Mendocino County Coast in August 2021. While out on a walk, Krongold fell and realized the progressive neuromuscular condition she lives with had entered a new stage…

On Monday morning, President Trump returned to a longtime fixation, posting on Truth Social that he was “going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS” by “signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections.” The post came just after Trump’s Friday summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin—not known for his love of free and fair elections—who allegedly counseled Trump that “your election was rigged because you have mail-in voting,” a message Trump promptly relayed to Fox News’ Sean Hannity…
Ed Department Preparing To Cut Millions In Special Education Funding, Advocates Warn
August 18, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
Disability advocates say that the U.S. Department of Education could cancel hundreds of grants made under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in the coming weeks. The awards in question are provided under IDEA Part D and fund everything from technical assistance and parent resource centers to personnel preparation for special educators. Collectively, the grants aimed at improving the education of students with disabilities could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. “No Part D grantee has heard for sure, or has seen anything in writing, (but) there is credible information flowing that points to (the Office of Special Education Programs’) plan to cancel hundreds of grants in a few weeks,” said Robyn Linscott, director of education and family policy at The Arc…
Improving ADA Compliance in the Built Environment With GIS, AI
August 18, 2025 | Source: GovTech
Technologies like GIS and AI can help cities improve their physical accessibility, both for compliance and a better resident experience. Digital accessibility has been a key focus for governments as they work to meet a 2026 deadline to comply with a federal mandate. Some experts have argued that better data can better support people with disabilities by informing investments in things like accessible sidewalks and curb ramps. These investments would also support the curb cut effect, which is the idea that making things — like sidewalk curbs — more accessible for people with disabilities benefits the broader population…

It was a sunny 85 degree day in Minster – perfect weather for a boat ride on the lake. The pontoon launch is just one activity available through the Family Adaptive program at Lake Loramie State Park. The program consists of several activities with mobility-impaired and cognitively disabled people in mind. It was founded by the volunteer-led Lake Loramie Improvement Association…

August 19, 2025 | Source: Chalkbeat
Tennessee schools can now more quickly remove some students with disabilities from their classrooms. The state Board of Education on Friday approved an amended state rule allowing schools to temporarily remove students to an environment such as a special education classroom or even into an alternative school before a formal behavioral assessment is completed or even started. A 2022 state rule required Tennessee schools to perform an FBA, a comprehensive assessment required by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, when a student is engaging in dangerous or “highly disruptive” behavior…

Governments with fewer than 50,000 residents must comply by April 26, 2027, while those with 50,000 or more need to meet standards by April 24, 2026. Michigan experts stress the importance of adding captions to videos and images to aid the visually impaired. “People can start making changes, easy, small changes, today,” Amy Maes said. Maes is the Access Services coordinator for Disability Network Michigan and director of access services for Disability Network Eastern Michigan…

August 19, 2025 | Source: Montana Free Press
A federal district court approved a settlement dictating that Montana students with individualized education programs are eligible for public education up to the age of 22. In the Aug. 13 settlement between Disability Rights Montana and the state, the Montana Office of Public Instruction must offer students with disabilities access to public education past the age of 18. A 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals case in Hawaii from 2013 established a parallel precedent. Most states maintain a similar policy. Montana federal Judge Dana Christensen approved the settlement, which mandates that the Montana Office of Public Instruction offer re-enrollment to students with individualized education plans who graduated without a diploma in the spring of 2025…

Under a new Florida law, HB 1105, and the board’s vote, students with disabilities will no longer be able to get a certificate of completion at the end of their school career, starting this year. Students with severe disabilities who can’t earn a standard high school diploma, will leave school without any formal recognition upon graduation…

August 21, 2025 | Source: Brown School of Public Month
Working-age adults with disabilities experience far higher rates of loneliness than those without, according to a new study from researchers at the Brown University School of Public Health and the Warren Alpert Medical School. The analysis found that nearly one third of adults with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64 reported persistent feelings of loneliness in a national survey that asked how often they felt a lack of companionship, left out, or isolated. About two thirds of respondents said they often experienced severe loneliness, regardless of the type of disability…
Wisconsin to compensate workers with disabilities for wrongfully denied unemployment claims
August 21, 2025 | Source: Wisconsin Watch
A federal judge has ordered Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development to compensate disabled workers who were denied unemployment benefits under a state law struck down as discriminatory. U.S. District Judge William Conley’s order promises relief to potentially thousands of workers affected by a 2013 Wisconsin law that banned recipients of federal disability aid from collecting unemployment compensation when they lost work. But many details remain to be ironed out, including how quickly the state will reprocess a decade’s worth of denied claims and whether any claims should draw priority…

Disability advocates want more Alice Springs transport options after dark
August 14, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
A lack of night-time transport options for people in Alice Springs is leaving people with disabilities feeling deserted and forgotten. Royston Thompson has a spinal disability, and not being able to get a wheelchair taxi after dark makes him feel isolated from the community, even “angry”. He said if he tried to request an accessible cab after 8pm he was told they are unavailable. “After 8pm the only vehicles with the taxi company that are available are just small vehicles … difficult to get into,” he said. Mr Thompson is a radio volunteer with the local SES and sometimes his training finishes at 9pm…
Wheelchair user hails M&S changes after access row
August 15, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
A disability campaigner who brought a discrimination case against Marks and Spencer (M&S) said she was “delighted” the retailer had made changes to a store layout. Flick Williams, from York, visited the Vangarde Shopping Park M&S Foodhall in June last year after a refurbishment had taken place. Doors had been put on fridges and protruding wire racks were fixed underneath, which Ms Williams said made it difficult for wheelchair users to access groceries. Since the case was settled earlier this year, M&S has made adjustments to the layout of the shop and said it was “committed to making our stores accessible to all our customers”…
Funding for disability sport is at risk – and Willow’s story shows why it matters
August 15, 2025 | Source: Stuff- New Zealand
For 8-year-old Willow, it was an inspiring moment when she discovered that she had the same condition, cerebral palsy, as the shot put champion Lisa Adams. Willow wrote an award-winning speech about her disability which her teacher said brought tears to the eyes of her audience. And it helped her classmates understand her condition. “She feels like she is included … this is her place, people understand her now.” Willow’s school, near Cambridge, was one of 400 reached by Paralympics New Zealand last year as part of a programme to promote inclusion for children with physical disabilities…
Trapped in Gaza: Palestinians with disabilities cannot reach aid
August 15, 2025 | Source: United Nations- Palestine
But for an increasing number of Palestinians, including those who cannot hear the orders or whose mobility is impaired, following these orders may be impossible. Yet, failure to do so, could cost them their lives. “In a normal situation, people with disabilities suffer the most. And in wartime, of course, the situation is heightened further,” said Muhannad Salah Al-Azzeh, member of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at a public dialogue this week in Geneva. With the number of disabled people in Gaza increasing every day, Mr. Al-Azzeh said that the minimum level of safety for people with disabilities is not being upheld…

‘Video calls would make 999 service more inclusive’
August 18, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
An East Sussex student is calling for emergency services to introduce video in 999 calls to improve accessibility. Daniel Burton, who is autistic, said adding video calls would help people who struggle with communicating over the phone to speak to emergency call handlers. Daniel, from St Leonards, said: “It’s a really inclusive idea.” He added: “If I could video call it would be beneficial to people like me – handlers could see people involved and I could talk to them.” Daniel, who said he was non-verbal at an early age, started his campaign after having trouble communicating with emergency services during an incident…
Waiting for the bailiffs but nowhere to go: Sharp rise in disabled people facing homelessness
August 18, 2025 | Source: Sky News- UK
Chrystal Hendry finished her psychology degree in 2021 and was excited to move to the next phase of her life – working towards becoming a counsellor – when she first became homeless. Chrystal, 30, has spinal muscular atrophy and uses a wheelchair. She needs round-the-clock care, as well as home adaptations, such as a bed hoist and wet room, to live comfortably. Several months after being evicted in 2021, and following a “really awful” period in inappropriate housing, she managed to find somewhere to rent in a different town, where she now lives. It has never been the ideal home – the temporary ramps are a struggle…

Euan’s Guide’s latest research exposes the hurdles disabled people encounter when planning accessible leisure and the resources that help. For many, summer represents a season of spontaneous outings, family adventures, and new discoveries. However, for the UK’s 16 million disabled people, this sense of freedom is often overshadowed by barriers and frustrations, according to Euan’s Guide. The research found that the joy of planning a summer trip can quickly become a source of stress. Four in five respondents have experienced a disappointing trip or had to change or cancel plans because of poor accessibility…
MND left her without a voice. Eight seconds of scratchy audio gave it back to her
August 20, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
“After such a long time, I couldn’t really remember my voice,” Sarah Ezekiel tells BBC Access All. “When I first heard it again, I felt like crying. It’s a kind of miracle.” The onset of motor neurone disease (MND) left Sarah without a voice and the use of her hands at the age of 34. It was within months of her becoming a mum for the second time. As they were growing up, her children Aviva and Eric only ever heard her speak through a machine with an emotionless robotic voice. But 25 years on, artificial intelligence (AI) has recreated their mum’s real voice from just eight seconds of audio on a scratchy VHS tape…
In North Macedonia, People with Disabilities Struggle to Gain Digital Access
August 20, 2025 | Source: Balkan Insight- Balkans
Walking through the streets of cities across North Macedonia, it’s noticeable how rare it is to see access ramps for people with disabilities. Those that do exist are often too steep, and barely usable even by parents pushing baby strollers. For people with physical disabilities, such ramps are practically useless. While the state continues to fail in ensuring accessibility in the physical world, it is also lagging behind in delivering digital accessibility. Digital solutions significantly ease the lives of people from this marginalised community and unlike construction, they are far easier to implement…

Jamie-Lee Dwyer spent most of her twenties searching for an accessible place to live, but when she had no other options, she moved into a group home. “It felt like I was stuck in prison,” she said. The now 32-year-old has a genetic, progressive neuromuscular condition known as Friedreich’s Ataxia and uses a wheelchair. Unable to find a home or an apartment in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast that she could afford and access, Ms Dwyer moved into a group home between 2017 and 2018. “It was pretty strange to suddenly be surrounded by people who live very limited lives and be pushed into a structured routine of when to wake, when to go to bed, [and] when to eat,” she said…

George Loewen’s life changed forever six years ago after a spinal cord injury left him an incomplete quadriplegic. Still, partial paralysis in all four limbs does not stop him from enjoying a good bike ride every week. “I still need to get out here to see Doctor Nature, yes, you bet,” Loewen said. The bike trail following the Seine River in St. Boniface is just one of many Loewen uses regularly in the city. A 2019 mountain bike accident left him wondering what he was still capable of doing. “When you’re paralyzed, you don’t know what you can do, right?” Loewen said…

- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
