Two Bronx students fight for accessibility in movie theaters across the state
May 30, 2025 | Source: The Bronx
Two Bronx High School of Science sisters are fighting to get new legislation passed that would require all theaters across the state to provide open caption screenings. “The deaf and hard of hearing community should have access to movie theaters and movie theaters should be inclusive,” said Sarah Lin, a senior at Bronx High School of Science. The teens were inspired by their mother, who has progressive hearing loss. “We’ve experienced firsthand how inaccessible things in this society can be,” said Julia Lin, a sophomore at Bronx High School of Science…
Accessible Air Travel Is Ready for Takeoff. Can It Avoid Turbulence?
May 30, 2025 | Source: Muscular Dystrophy Association- Steve Wright
The past year featured the most disability-positive changes for air travel in decades. While there is still a way to go before air travel is fully accessible, policy and rule changes promise to make it safer and more dignified for people with disabilities. Most of the changes came in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization, an act that is reapproved every five years, most recently in May 2024. “Senator Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat, was instrumental in getting disability provisions included. Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, helped move the bill forward on the Senate floor — it had very strong bipartisan support,” says Shannon Wood, Director of Disability Policy at MDA…
Gov. Newsom proposes ‘asset test’ for low-income and disabled Medi-Cal applicants. What does that mean?
May 30, 2025 | Source: Los Angeles Times
Millions of Californians who rely on Medi-Cal and In-Home Supportive Services could lose eligibility under a proposal requiring recipients to prove their assets total less than $2,000. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent revised budget proposal highlighted a stark $37.6 billion increase in funding costs associated with Medi-Cal between the 2024 and 2025 fiscal year, compared to $17.1 billion in the 2014 through 2015 fiscal year. The dollar amount needed to fund the program is expected to continue rising over the next several years. The cost has been driven up by a surge in enrollment, pharmacy costs and higher managed care costs, according to the budget proposal…
When Assistive Tech Meets the Silver Screen: Documentaries Driving Accessibility Innovation
May 31,2025 | Source: Tech Bullion
In recent years, documentary filmmakers have turned their lenses toward the intersection of disability and technology, spotlighting pioneers whose innovations promise to reshape daily life for millions. These films do more than simply chronicle inventions; they humanize the designers and end-users, revealing how a wheelchair’s new wheel design or a brain–computer interface can transform independence and self-perception. Earlier efforts to curate such work were hosted on The Ability Exchange, which once showcased collaborations between engineers and people with disabilities in co-design labs…

May 31, 2025 | Source: KWQC
A Quincy man is using his social media platforms to bring awareness to the deaf and blind communities. “My name is Ronnie McKenzie. I was born with Usher syndrome, which correlates to being deaf and blind.” Ronnie McKenzie – also known as King Ron to his more than 2 million social media followers – is a man on a mission. He is using his digital presence to build bridges, particularly between the deaf and hearing communities. “Basically break communication barriers and just help advocate for the kids that don’t have any resources to help them communicate with their parents,” he said…
A disabled mom’s message to parents: We all need help, and it’s OK to ask for it
May 31, 2025 | Source: WBHM
In 2011, Jessica Slice took a strenuous summer hike on the Greek Island of Santorini. She didn’t drink enough water and when she returned to her cruise ship, she felt dizzy and nauseated. She thought it would pass but her symptoms got worse, making it hard for Slice to stand upright without fainting. And they didn’t go away. After years of tests, doctors’ appointments, rehabilitation programs, and frustration, Slice was eventually diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, an autonomic nervous system disorder. She eventually embrace a new identity: a person with a disability…
Teen leads push to make subtitles mandatory in NY movie theaters: ‘Accessibility is a right’
June 1, 2025 | Source: New York Post
As if senior prom, finals and college applications aren’t enough, a Queens teenager is taking on the New York legislature this spring. Sarah Lin, a senior at Bronx Science who has made headlines crusading to make the movies more friendly for the hearing impaired, is continuing her fight in Albany by pushing for a proposed bill that would make it mandatory for movie theaters across the country to provide closed captioning at more screenings. She has become the face of the movement and the brain behind its social media push, giving the cause typically focused on the elderly community a much-needed facelift…
Adirondack tourism group works to make parks more accessible
June 2, 2025 | Source: Adirondack Explorer News
On a cold, misty morning at Lake Colby Beach in Saranac Lake, Nick Friedman crouched beside a cracked asphalt path, tugging a long tape measure across its uneven surface. He marked the pavement with blue chalk — the first step in a detailed assessment of accessibility at the village’s popular beachfront park. “Uneven surfaces, a lack of direction for an accessible route, barriers to restrooms. These are the most glaring problems,” he said. Friedman is the executive director of Accessible Adirondack Tourism, a nonprofit commissioned by the Saranac Lake Village Board to survey the accessibility of a dozen municipal parks…
DC sued by blind pedestrians who say they’re subject to ‘blindness tax’
June 2, 2025 | Source: WTOP
D.C. is being sued for not doing enough to help blind pedestrians cross the street safely, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the D.C. Council of the Blind and five plaintiffs. The federal suit claims the plaintiffs’ civil rights are being violated under the Americans with Disabilities Act, because blind residents and visitors are being harmed by the insufficient amount of Accessible Pedestrian Signals at the District’s 1,600 signalized intersections. The Accessible Pedestrian Signals communicate traffic safety information through a variety of nonvisual formats, including a soft tone to indicate where a push button with a raised vibrotactile arrow is…

Court Orders Chicago to Install Thousands of Accessible Pedestrian Signals
June 2, 2025 | Source: Disability Rights Advocates
A federal court ordered Chicago to install thousands of accessible pedestrian signals (APS) over the next 10 years, a historic win in the years-long legal battle by blind and low vision pedestrians for safe and equitable streets. APS are devices that convey visual crossing information (i.e., WALK or DON’T WALK) in audible and vibrotactile formats accessible to blind, low vision, and Deafblind pedestrians. Disability Rights Advocates (DRA) and Proskauer Rose LLP filed a class action lawsuit in September 2019 on behalf of the American Council of the Blind of Metropolitan Chicago and three individual plaintiffs challenging Chicago’s discriminatory practices that disregard blind and low vision safety needs during pedestrian planning…
Proposed Federal Budget Could Lead to Over 51,000 Preventable Deaths, Researchers Warn in Letter to Senate Leaders
June 3, 2025 | Source: Yale School of Public Health and University of Pennsylvania LDI
In a letter to ranking Senate leaders, public health and policy researchers at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania warn that provisions in the House-passed federal budget reconciliation bill could lead to more than 51,000 deaths annually if enacted. Addressed to the Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden and Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Bernie Sanders, the letter presents science-based projections of the human toll of eliminating key health protections. The findings point to catastrophic public health consequences from mass insurance losses and cuts to nursing home standards—provisions supported by the House bill…
Visibly challenges SC law, claims digital eye exam ban violates U.S. constitutional rights
June 3, 2025 | Source: WACH FOX 57
The South Carolina Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday in a case that could reshape the future of telehealth services in the state. At the center of the dispute is a challenge to South Carolina’s 2016 “Eye Care Consumer Protection Law,” which prohibits the use of online or automated digital eye exams to obtain prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses. The Chicago-based company Visibly, formerly known as Opternative, is fighting to overturn the law, arguing that the ban violates the U.S. Constitution. The company’s legal representation, the Institute for Justice, contends that the law unfairly restricts telehealth services and limits patient access to care…
Freeport to replace non-compliant accessibility ramps over next decades
June 3, 2025 | Source: MyStateline
The City of Freeport is undertaking an expensive, multi-decade project to bring accessibility ramps for disabled people in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). About 75% of the ramps in Freeport are not compliant with the act’s regulations, according to Acting Public Works Director Darin Stykel. Freeport has over 1,800 ADA ramps. Each ramp costs around $20,000 to replace. “The city of Freeport started approximately a year ago with a plan to evaluate all the ramps and accessibility needs within the city of Freeport and the right of ways,” Darin said…
Uber’s new senior mode aims to remove barriers for aging riders
June 4, 2025 | Source: Fast Company
For millions of older adults, a ride to the grocery store or a friend’s house isn’t just about convenience—it’s about staying connected, independent, and well. When driving is no longer an option, transportation can become a barrier to everyday life, and even a risk factor for declining health. Aging adults and families who rely on ride-hailing apps to get around now have a new option to explore from Uber, which just announced a pair of features designed to make the app easier and more intuitive for older riders. The ride-hailing company is introducing senior accounts, which allow family members to help set up, track, and pay for rides, and “simple mode,” a senior-friendly version of the app for older adults who use it on their own…
Senator Markey, Rep. Cohen Introduce Legislation to Make America’s Streets Safer for Everyone
June 4, 2025 | Source: Senator Edward Markey
Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Representative Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today reintroduced the Complete Streets Act, which would transform America’s public roads. The bill would require states to direct a portion of their federal highway funding toward the creation of a Complete Streets Program. A “Complete Street” provides safe and accessible transportation options for children, seniors, and people with disabilities by prioritizing infrastructure for pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit users…
TLC Finally Hits 50% Accessibility Target After Years of Delays
June 5, 2025 | Source: THE CITY – NYC News and New York Daily News
After years of missed deadlines, the city has finally met a legal commitment to make 50% of the yellow taxis on the road wheelchair accessible. Taxi and Limousine Commission officials and advocates for New Yorkers with disabilities on Thursday hailed the latest development in a long-running federal class-action case — whose landmark 2013 settlement initially called for making half of the entire fleet of 13,587 taxis wheelchair-accessible by 2020. That 2020 deadline came and went, as did a 2023 extension. Currently, 5,140 yellow taxis — or 50.7% of those now in service — are equipped with ramps to load people who rely on wheelchairs or scooters, according to TLC…

Disabilities council scraps YK accessible housing project
May 27, 2025 | Source: Cabin Radio- Canada
The NWT Disabilities Council says it is cancelling an accessible housing project after a breakdown in negotiations with Housing NWT. The project, under development since 2020, would have created units to address the NWT’s “serious and well-documented lack of accessible, affordable housing for persons with disabilities.” NWTDC said it had begun designing a building for a specific lot near downtown Yellowknife after receiving support from De Beers Canada and early commitments from Housing NWT, the territorial housing agency. NWTDC said it had spent years “diligently completing designs, securing corporate and federal investment, and negotiating with [Housing NWT] to secure the necessary land through a sublease that had been repeatedly assured as stable.”…
Blind activist livid at city for failing to fix dangerous intersections
May 29, 2025 | Source: SooToday- Canada
As the city busies itself with controversial studies temporarily removing traffic signals at local intersections, a local blind advocate is appalled by what she says is a lack of action on clearly identified risks affecting some of our most vulnerable citizens. Carol Magnan has only two per cent vision in her right eye. She can’t see a thing out of her left eye. Last year, she was asked to prepare a report for the city’s accessibility advisory committee on the state of accessible pedestrian signals (APS) in Sault Ste. Marie. APS are the chirping, beeping devices that enable blind and low-vision individuals to know whether the light is red, yellow or green, whether it’s safe for them to cross the street…
Saskatchewan Soccer Association powering into accessibility
May 30, 2025 | Source: Sask Sport- Canada
While the summer break can be a chance to rest, recuperate and have fun outside of sport, the athletes competing in the Saskatchewan Soccer Association’s (SSA) new power chair soccer program are counting down the days until they can get back to the action. Launched earlier this year, the program is the first of its kind in the province, filling a gap in the Saskatchewan sport landscape as the only power chair sport. It’s also only the fifth active power chair soccer program in the country. “There aren’t very many things out there for people in power chairs,” said Ed Bettin, a member of the Saskatoon Rolling Thunder team…
Mumbai: “Accessibility walk” to raise awareness about pedestrian infrastructures
May 30, 2025 | Source: MSN- India
The Walking Project, in partnership with Access to Hope, a disabled accessibility non-profit, conducted an “accessibility walk” on May 23 to raise awareness about pedestrian infrastructure, Indian design standards for pedestrian infrastructure, and civic problems related to the design. “The importance of accessible footpaths is not just for us who are physically disabled, pregnant women, those who have kids in strollers, senior citizens. Honestly, everyone can benefit from it,” said Mitesh Shah, a disabled national-level wheelchair lawn tennis player. The Indian Roads Congress’s (IRC) code 103 and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Universal Footpath Policy both state that footpaths across the country and city must be 15 cm in height…
Victorian train network failing to meet national accessibility standards
May 31, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Accessing Melbourne’s train network is a challenge for Andrew Bretherton. The 38-year-old was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis about 10 years ago, and relies on a wheelchair to get around. But using his closest train station — Windsor in Melbourne’s inner-south-east — has become an inconvenience because of the steep ramps and limited accessibility features. The station also has no lifts, independent boarding or accessible pick up and drop off points. “I’ve missed out on an event with friends because I couldn’t get there,” Mr Bretherton said…
Kathy has terminal cancer and cares for her son with a profound disability. At a crisis point, his NDIS funding ran out
June 1, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- Australia
Next to the bed Steven Rieger spends most his life in is a framed print that says: “This is my happy place.” For him, it is – his small room on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne is covered in Collingwood paraphernalia and basks in warm light. Steven, 37, needs round-the-clock care. He lives with cerebral palsy, is nonverbal and suffers from seizures – natural light can trigger them so he spends almost all of his time in his room. His parents are both in their 70s – his father Rodger has had several strokes and is partly deaf. His mother, Kathy, who has cared for him most of his life, is dying – her breast cancer has metastasised, spreading to her bones and brain…
Saint John to fix up ‘accessibility nightmare’ at intersection
June 2, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
A two-decade push to make a major Saint John intersection more accessible to people with disabilities will be seeing results in the coming months, city hall says. Work this summer at McAllister Drive and Westmorland Road will include upgrades such as audible pedestrian traffic signals and ramps onto sidewalks and island. The four-way intersection — near McAllister Place mall and other large and small commercial businesses — has crosswalks that require getting across pedestrian islands. But the islands from three of the intersection’s four corners are small and none have ramps, meaning pedestrians and people in wheelchairs, are confronted by a curb as they cross…

June 2, 2025 | Source: Citizen Digital- Kenya
Digital technologies have today been incorporated in people’s activities, where access to information and services has moved to online platforms. Digitisation of services cuts across sectors like health, education, agriculture, commerce, mobility, and manufacturing, among others.
Kenya, for instance, has an ambitious plan to digitise nearly all government services to enable the speedy and efficient delivery of services across the public sector. However, existing barriers to inclusion prevent persons with disabilities from accessing information and services digitally…
Make our rail stations accessible, say Northern politicians
June 2, 2025 | Source: Rail- UK
Transport for the North asked over 2,000 people across the region to share their experiences using rail stations – especially those living with health conditions or disabilities. What we heard was loud and clear: for too many people, our stations are not accessible enough. That’s not good enough – and we’re committed to fixing it. This report highlights where and how stations fall short, what’s working well, and what changes passengers in the North, want to see. Research from Transport for the North (TfN) highlights that most stations in the North are difficult or impossible for too many people to use…

Digital accessibility in Nepal’s healthcare websites
June 3, 2025 | Source: The Annapurna Express- Nepal
Despite having established several legal frameworks promoting digital accessibility, Nepal lacks implementation resulting in significant gaps across healthcare websites. This writeup examines the current state of web accessibility in Nepal government’s health-related websites based on WAVE API analysis of the eight homepages. Nepal doesn’t lack the legal instruments for digital accessibility, however, there seems to be a gap in their implementation. The Right to Information Act of 2007 ensures that every person has the right to access and regulate information…
Canada’s Wonderland’s new accessibility pass changes the experience for her child with autism, mom says
June 3, 2025 | Source: CTV News- Canada
Every summer for the better part of a decade, Monica Matheson would take her daughter Jessica to Canada’s Wonderland. But Jessica’s mother says a recent change to the accessibility passes issued at the amusement park could dramatically increase the time her daughter will have to wait between rides, potentially leading to meltdowns that will colour their experience. Matheson says Wonderland is her 14-year-old’s absolute favourite place to go—a place she constantly asks about. “Jessica is a sensory seeker. So, she seeks any activity that’s going to put great movement on her body, so she loves any ride,” Matheson explained to CTV News Toronto…

Accessible tourism should be the standard, not a luxury – opinion
June 5, 2025 | Source: The Jerusalem Post- Israel
Paul Garfield hadn’t been to Israel in eight years. A wheelchair user from the UK living with progressive multiple sclerosis, he had long put off the trip – not for lack of desire, but because air travel in his condition felt nearly impossible. “The transfers are hard,” he explained. “From my wheelchair to the aisle chair, and then again into the airplane seat. It’s a lot, and it’s not easy.” But everything changed after October 7, when Paul’s son Daniel passionately made aliyah and joined the army as a lone soldier. He was stationed near Gaza with the IDF’s Givati Brigade…

Headlined by beauty influencer and disability advocate Molly Burke, the event united brand leaders, content creators, accessibility experts and people with lived experience to tackle one big question: why is beauty still designed for sighted consumers only? Burke, who lost her vision at age 14 and has since built a global community across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, delivered a powerful keynote highlighting how exclusion often stems from oversight, not ability. “Designing with accessibility in mind isn’t charity. It’s just good business,” said Burke…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
