July 3, 2025 | Source: STAT
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) strongly condemns the budget reconciliation bill passed by the Senate, which includes an alarming $930 billion in cuts to Medicaid. These proposed cuts are even more severe than those passed by the House of Representatives and represent a direct threat to the health, independence, and lives of millions of Americans with disabilities. Medicaid is a lifeline for people with disabilities. It provides essential services such as home and community-based services, employment supports, and critical medical treatments that enable individuals to live independently, participate in their communities, and maintain their well-being…

Telluride street accessibility project makes progress
June 26, 2025 | Source: Telluride Daily Planet
As board president and a volunteer instructor at the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program, David Sussman knows the value of providing those who live with a disability access to outdoor adventure. But Sussman, who lives with a disability himself, also knows the value of making mundane, everyday activities accessible too. It’s for this reason, he said, that he considers the Town of Telluride’s Main Street Accessibility Project “a gamechanger.” “I have been here 10 years, eight years of those in a wheelchair, and I know the exact places where I have to be careful in town,” Sussman said…
Trump’s Energy Department is making federal buildings less accessible again
June 29, 2025 | Source: The Hill
On May 16, the Department of Energy proposed eliminating accessibility requirements for more than 17,000 federally funded buildings used by millions of Americans. The agency claimed the change was “non-controversial,” issuing it as a direct final rule that bypasses the standard public notice and comment process. This is not only the first reversal of federal civil rights protections on this scale in U.S. history, it is also procedurally unprecedented. The department is exploiting a shortcut designed for routine, non-substantive adjustments to decimate the right to equal access and block taxpayers from working in or even entering spaces they pay to support…
Meet the Google engineer making Maps more accessible
June 30, 2025 | Source: WBUR
In 2009, then 33-year-old Sasha Blair-Goldensohn was walking through New York’s Central Park on his regular commute to the Google offices in Chelsea when a 100-pound rotten tree branch struck him. With a fractured skull and damaged spinal cord, the father of two and a rising star engineer at Google Maps would have died if not for the help of a doctor jogging by, who kept him alive until an ambulance arrived. He spent a month in a coma and over a year in rehab before returning to work, partially paralyzed and now using a wheelchair…
Disabled Amazon workers in corporate jobs allege ‘systemic discrimination’
June 30, 2025 | Source: The Guardian
Disabled corporate workers at Amazon have accused the company of engaging in “systemic discrimination”, aggressively quashing their attempts to organize, and using artificial intelligence systems that they allege do not comply with US disability laws. At the center of the Amazon workers’ complaints are allegations that the company has denied requests for accommodations for disabled staff in an “automated” or “semi-automated” way and have allegedly repeatedly removed messages and a petition from an employee Slack channel…
Click, speak, move: These brain implants are poised to help people with disabilities
June 30, 2025 | Source: NPR
People who have lost the ability to move or speak may soon have a new option: surgically implanted devices that link the brain to a computer. More than two decades after researchers first demonstrated that a person could move a computer cursor with their thoughts, several firms are poised to take the brain-computer interface (BCI) from experimental curiosity to commercial product. “We know it works, we know the enabling technologies are now ready,” says Michael Mager, the CEO of Precision Neuroscience…
VA is overlooking accessibility requirements when procuring IT, watchdog says
July 1, 2025 | Source: Nextgov/FCW and MeriTalk and FedScoop & ExecutiveGov
The Department of Veterans Affairs is failing to verify whether the information technology systems it purchases from outside vendors are in compliance with federal accessibility requirements, according to a report released on Tuesday by VA’s Office of Inspector General. The watchdog audit examined a sample of “bedrock and critical information technology and communications systems” that VA has procured to determine whether internal agency officials considered them to be in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act…
Cuts to unique disability waiver program leave questions for disabled Minnesotans
July 1, 2025 | Source: MPR News
The state Legislature voted to cut funding for nursing homes and the state’s disability waivers system to help balance the budget. The disability waivers system is linked to Minnesota’s Medicaid program and provides home and community-based services to those with disabilities, helping them live in a community rather than an institution. In 2023, around 70,000 Minnesotans used disability waivers. Lawmakers say the cuts will “slow the growth” of the program. Linda Wolford, the government relations director for the Minnesota Council on Disability, joined Minnesota Now to explain…
The disabled teen stuck in a hospital for six years finally gets her own home
July 1, 2025 | Source: NPR
Alexis Ratcliff is 19 and she’s lived, since she was 13, in a hospital in North Carolina. This week, the disabled woman moved to her own apartment. When she saw the spacious, renovated place for the first time, she celebrated. “Oh, it’s beautiful,” she said, her voice quiet and awed, as she maneuvered her power wheelchair down the wide and newly built wood ramp. The Trump administration celebrated, too, and put out a press release to mark its role in helping the state get Ratcliff home. But the release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services left out one detail: The Trump administration, in its budget request for the next fiscal year, zeroed out the money for the program that helped Ratcliff move…
How Scouting America is making its camps even more accessible to Scouts with special needs
July 2, 2025 | Source: Aaron on Scouting
Scouting America believes that every young person deserves to have a great experience at Scout camp. The Special Needs Prepared Camp program is a new initiative to help Scouting properties make sure that happens. Introduced as a pilot program in 2024, the Special Needs Prepared Camp program is designed to give camps the tools they need to make their property accessible to kids with special needs. “We want to say to families, ‘Hey, we are ready for you; you can come to our camps,’” says Warren Wenner, past chair of the National Special Needs and Disabilities Committee and co-chair of the Special Needs Prepared Camp program…

July 2, 2025 | Source: PHCP Pros
On June 18, 2025, the city of Phoenix voted to adopt the 2024 Phoenix Building Construction Code (PBCC), becoming the latest major city to adopt all 15 of the 2024 International Codes (I-Codes). This decision comes after careful consideration by the Phoenix City Council and aligns the City’s standards with the latest construction codes and local priorities. “By adopting the 2024 I-Codes®, Phoenix has become a national leader in building safety, accessibility and sustainability,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer John Belcik…
Judge weighs push to require ASL interpreters at White House briefings
July 2, 2025 | Source: CNN
A federal judge grappled for over an hour on Wednesday with an effort to force the Trump administration to provide American Sign Language interpreters at White House press briefings. The case, brought by the National Association of the Deaf, alleges that, in failing to provide sufficient ASL interpretation, the White House is violating deaf Americans’ rights under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 from accessing “critical information in real time.” US District Judge Amir Ali, one of former President Joe Biden’s final appointees, did not immediately issue a ruling, but he appeared sympathetic to the group’s arguments…
Celebrating Inclusion: Accessibility is Beautiful
July 2, 2025 | Source: NBC 10 NEWS
In less than 10 seconds, Tina Guenette can sum up the last 20 years of her life. “I’ve had four bouts of cancer, breast twice, bladder twice, four major strokes and I walked in to a minor procedure and suffered a spinal stroke and woke up without the use of my legs,” said Guenette. That’s how RAMP, her brainchild, came to be. It stands for Real Access Motivates Progress. “As I say my legs don’t work but everything else does and my mouth sure does so I became an advocate for accessibility,” said Guenette…
Chicago must install accessible pedestrian signals at all signalized intersections by 2040
July 2, 2025 | Source: Smart Cities Dive
Accessible pedestrian signals alert blind or low-vision pedestrians when it’s safe to walk across the street through audible and vibrating signals. Many cities throughout the U.S. have not installed accessible signals, said Reichman, while some cities have installed them at only a small portion of their crosswalks or have older models in place that don’t work well. In 2021, a federal court ruled that New York City’s lack of accessible signals violates the civil rights of people with disabilities and ordered the city to install them at 10,000 intersections over the course of a decade…

July 3, 2025 | Source: U.S. Department of Justice
Today, the Justice Department announced that it reached an agreement with a Michigan school district to address the discriminatory use of seclusion and restraint against students with disabilities, in violation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under the settlement agreement, the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District will end the use of seclusion, reform its restraint practices, and improve special education services for students with disabilities. During the period covered by the investigation, with which the school district fully cooperated, students with disabilities were secluded and/or restrained on more than 2,400 occasions…

July 3, 2025 | Source: WCTV
Children with disabilities across Florida will soon see more support, thanks to two new state laws aimed at improving access to care. More than a million children in the state are living with some form of disability, according to the Florida Department of Health. To better serve those families, lawmakers have passed legislation streamlining the Home Health Aide for Medically Fragile Children program. The goal is to make sure every child receives the individualized care they need. “We need to be sure that we’re getting the services out there in the appropriate way,” Sen. Gayle Harrell, (R) Stuart said…
Texans With Disabilities Get a Little More From the State After Session’s End
July 3, 2025 | Source: The Austin Chronicle
Five disability advocacy groups got together June 25 for a webinar hosted by the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities to discuss the good, bad, and ugly from the last legislative session. A highlight: House Bill 2081 established a grant program that expands inclusive postsecondary education programs for students with an intellectual and/or developmental disability. Brooke Hohfeld, co-executive director of Texas Advocates, said in the webinar that she had to go to college in New Mexico as Texas did not have enough comprehensive transition programs, like the new Building Better Futures Program created by the bill…

‘I don’t want to live on benefits, I want to work’
June 25, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
“I don’t want to live off benefits all my life.” Teenager Kailee Kember-Brown, a wheelchair user, says she has so far applied for more than 40 jobs without success. Kailee, from Dover, in Kent, is currently entitled to a top-up to her Universal Credit income because of her disability. It means the 19-year-old is not required to look for a job, but she wants one to avoid having to stay at home getting bored. Most of her friends are also in work. And her financial situation could soon be changing too, under government plans to cut the Universal Credit health top-up for under-22s with long-term illnesses or disabilities, currently worth £423-a-month to people like Kailee, as part of their wide-ranging welfare reform proposals…

June 29, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Manitoba’s Minister for Accessibility is apologizing to the deaf and hard of hearing community after comments she made about an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter were made public. On Thursday, an ASL-English Interpreter provided her services at an event put on by Minister Nahanni Fontaine to celebrate Indigenous women graduating from high school, college and university. Interpreter Sheryl LaVallee shared the stage alongside various speakers so members of the audience who communicate using ASL, a visual language comprised of hand movements and facial expressions, could be included in the conversation…
‘Canal trust leads the way for disability access’
June 27, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
A charity that helps wheelchair users enjoy a trip on a canal boat is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Lyneal Trust, in north Shropshire, uses adapted narrow boats and cottages to offer holidays and day trips and is staffed by 40 volunteers, who welcome people with a range of mobility issues. Peter Fox, who is one of them, said it had given him the opportunity to “put something back, to help people that wouldn’t otherwise be able to do it”. His colleague, Nicky Fox, said she enjoyed seeing the “joy on the faces” of the people enjoying the experience…
All Mid Suffolk councillors to have disability training
June 29, 2025 | Source: East Anglian Daily Times- UK
A motion calling all councillors to have mandatory disability awareness training has been passed after a campaign to keep accessibility “front and centre”. Mid Suffolk District Council met at Endeavour House to discuss Councillor Terence Carter’s calls for the council to review and improve its disability interactions – including mandatory training for all councillors and relevant officers. The motion received unanimous backing with 26 votes in total. Cllr Carter said: “Accessibility isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a must. As someone with both visible and hidden disabilities, I know how important it is that disabled voices aren’t just heard, but properly included…
Starmer’s disability benefit concessions are not enough, says rebel Labour whip
June 29, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
The Labour whip who resigned in protest against disability benefit cuts has said Keir Starmer’s concessions do not yet go far enough to win her over, as No 10 launched a fresh attempt to stem the revolt against its welfare bill. Vicky Foxcroft, who quit her frontbench role over the welfare bill a little more than a week ago, urged the government to work jointly on the changes with disabled people and to publish the review of the system before bringing in cuts. In an interview with the Guardian, Foxcroft said she had not made up her mind how to vote on Tuesday but would need assurances about further improvements…
Succeeding In Para-Sport Is Hard; In South Pacific Nations It’s Harder
July 1, 2025 | Source: Paralympics Australia
Far from the elaborate settings in which leading sport administrators usually find themselves, Andrew Parsons and Grant Mizens wiped away sweat as they traversed a steep descending trail on a heavily jungled remote South Pacific Island. Parsons, the President of the International Paralympic Committee, and Mizens, recently appointed President of Paralympics Australia, were taken to the island of Tanna by representatives of the Vanuatu Paralympic Committee along with Tanna resident Ken Kahu, who represented Vanuatu in the men’s F64 javelin at Paris 2024…
How Glastonbury became an emblem of accessibility for Disabled music lovers
July 1, 2025 | Source: CN Traveller- UK
For many disabled folk, UK music festivals present a strange conundrum: irresistibly magnetic yet maddeningly out of reach. For me, there exists the pull of euphoric baselines, communal joy and carefree abandon, but this is often offset by the push of potential mud, mayhem in the form of impenetrable crowds, and miles and miles of inaccessible terrain. In the two decades I have been paralysed and dependent on a wheelchair full time, I can count on one hand the number of festivals I’ve attempted; each one chosen not merely for its headliners, but moreover for an abundance of tarmac, smaller crowds or the promise of a covered tent…
What has been driving the rise in disability benefit claims?
July 1, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
The government has confirmed details of its scaled-back plan to reform health and disability benefits, following pressure from Labour MPs. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall said changes to Pip (Personal Independence Payment) would only apply to new claimants. She also confirmed that payments to existing recipients of the health-related element of universal credit (formerly known as incapacity benefit) will no longer be frozen. However, government analysis on the impact of welfare reforms that are still planned estimates that an extra 150,000 people will end up in “relative poverty” as a result…
‘This isn’t a U-turn’: disabled people react to passing of watered-down welfare bill
July 2, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
When Tim Boxall went to the protest outside Westminster on the eve of the welfare bill vote, he knew the 32C heat would exacerbate his multiple sclerosis. But he felt he had to be there. “The hour train here and the heat will cause me spasms, pain, fatigue, and set off motor and vocal tics,” he says. “It’ll take days bedbound to recover, but if we don’t fight our own corner, who will?” Boxall, 50, has received the personal independence payment (Pip) for a decade and calls it a “lifeline”, particularly since he had to give up work as a credit controller for a high street bank…
FIS continues commitment to Para events safety and accessibility with annual site visits

Every year, generally towards the back end of the season between June and September, FIS organizes an annual visit to relevant race sites used across events. Working alongside Local Organizing Committees, as well as the Coaching Advisory Group (CAG), and the Athletes Focus Group (AFG), improvements for venues are suggested and acted upon where necessary. Not only does this show an unwavering commitment to athlete safety, but it equally allows FIS to make these venues as accessible as possible to assist the growth of Para Snow Sports…
Mobile ramps for businesses being proposed to increase local accessibility
July 2, 2025 | Source: Guelph Today- Canada
Accessibility may be about to ramp up in Guelph … literally. Coun. Carly Klassen is set to propose a three-year pilot project to make mobile ramps available to local businesses and others in order to increase accessibility for a wider array of residents. “I just think it’s the right thing to do,” the councillor explained. “We still have a bit of a gap as far as accessible businesses, not just downtown, but any business that’s in an older structure.” The idea will be introduced during city council’s committee of the whole meeting on July 8…
The mistakes Keir Starmer made over disability cuts – and how he can avoid future embarrassment
July 2, 2025 | Source: The Conversation- UK
Labour MPs have forced a major government climbdown over disability benefit cuts, in an embarrassing turn of events for Keir Starmer. The prime minister has blown a hole in his budget by agreeing to scrap plans to tighten eligibility criteria for disability benefits via the universal credit and personal independence payment bill. In return, MPs passed what was left of the bill – although 49 of them still rebelled, voting against the government. The bruising encounter bodes poorly for the future. Starmer’s Number 10 operation has been shown to be unable to communicate effectively with MPs…
Lack of support for man with learning disability
July 3, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
An apology has been made to a man with a learning disability after they did not receive the care coordinator they were entitled to. The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman found fault with the Integrated Care Board (ICB), Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust (CPFT) and Peterborough City Council’s adult social care for not allocating a coordinator to the man, referred to as Mr Y. It also found local policy was written more restrictively than national guidance in such circumstances…

The COVID pandemic’s forgotten legacy: a rising tide of disability
July 3, 2025 | Source: The Canary- UK
While political debate intensifies over rising welfare costs, a quieter crisis grows in plain sight. The COVID-19 pandemic has left behind a legacy not just of economic strain, but of permanent chronic illness. Post-viral conditions, particularly those resembling myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), have silently reshaped the employment landscape. At Stripy Lightbulb CIC, we warned the Government about this during the 2023 Plan for Jobs and Employment Inquiry. We cautioned that without meaningful mitigation against viral transmission; thousands would be left with disabling symptoms…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
