Target unveils game-changing self-checkout technology designed for blind customers nationwide
September 26, 2025 | Source: Fox and Retail Dive and USA Today and Disability Scoop and AOL and Target
Self-checkout systems have been a significant convenience for many shoppers, allowing them to avoid longer wait times commonly found at traditional checkout lines with cashiers. However, those who are blind or have low vision often face challenges at the self-checkout stations, which are rarely suited to meet their needs. Steve Decker, Target’s senior manager of accessibility, who is blind and knows this challenge firsthand, decided to be part of the solution. He has a significant role in the team responsible for the company’s rollout of the new accessible self-checkout, aimed at making the shopping experience more seamless and inclusive for customers like him…
New Mexico Courts Boost Accessibility Through Collaboration and Data
September 26, 2025 | Source: Pew Charitable Trusts
A new poll from The Pew Charitable Trusts found that about one-third of adults in the U.S. live in households in which someone has defended or initiated a court case, whether it be civil, criminal, family, or traffic-related. That means that roughly 91 million people have visited their local or state courthouse to resolve matters pertaining to their health, safety, and day-to-day legal matters. Among the poll’s respondents, those who reported having a disability were far more likely to have engaged with the court system (49%) than those without disabilities (29%)…

September 29, 2025 | Source: Reuters
The U.S. Transportation Department said on Monday that it will not enforce key provisions of a rule issued in December by former President Joe Biden’s administration that requires new consumer protections for disabled passengers using wheelchairs.
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and airline trade group Airlines for America filed suit in February challenging the rule that set stricter standards for accommodating passengers with wheelchairs…

AMC Theatres Accused Of Disability Discrimination
September 26, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
The nation’s largest movie theater chain illegally forced out an employee with cerebral palsy after two decades on the job, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says. In a lawsuit filed this month, the EEOC alleges that American Multi-Cinema, known as AMC Theatres, violated the Americans with Disabilities Act when it denied reasonable accommodations to Marc Gillis, a veteran employee at its Owings Mills, Md. location. “This employee had worked for the company for 22 years and requested very simple accommodations to continue as an effective employee,” said Debra Lawrence, EEOC regional attorney for the Philadelphia district…
Assault on Accessibility Initiatives Hits Early Career Scientists Hard
September 26, 2025 | Source: Capital and Main
If someone had walked past the storage of the neuroscience lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in May, they might have heard quiet sobbing. It was Uma Chatterjee, a doctoral student, having a severe obsessive-compulsive disorder flare-up triggered by the pressure of disappearing research funding. Since January, core funding from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health has faced deep cuts. The administration of President Donald Trump has cut more than $4 billion from the National Institutes of Health and $970 million from the National Science Foundation, affecting more than 7,000 grants, according to Grant Witness, a database tracked by scientists…
AI Is Overlooking Accessibility. Here’s how to Change That
September 26, 2025 | Source: Built IN
Artificial intelligence is transforming how we live and work, but for people with disabilities, it has the potential to go even further. AI can bridge communication gaps, support independence and open up opportunities that were once out of reach. And yet, most conversations about AI focus on speed, automation and business impact. What’s missing is a deeper conversation about equity and human dignity. Without inclusive design, AI risks reinforcing barriers for people who are already marginalized…

September 26, 2025 | Source: The National News Desk
“It’s a journey, and there’s no real road map for us to follow, so we’re facing things as they happen,” Gayheart told us at the Step Up 2025 Inspiration Awards. She continued, “We’re trying to do it all with as much dignity and grace as possible and as much love as possible. It’s a really tough situation.” Gayheart and Dane share two daughters, Billie and Georgia, and she has worked to be a source of support for their family. Rebecca Gayheart is helping her family navigate through her husband Eric Dane’s ALS diagnosis…
Delivery Robot Collides with Mobility Scooter, Sparking Accessibility Outrage
September 27, 2025 | Source: WebProNews
In a bustling West Hollywood sidewalk last week, a seemingly routine encounter between emerging technology and everyday mobility turned into a viral flashpoint, highlighting the growing pains of autonomous delivery systems. Mark Chaney, a local therapist with cerebral palsy, was navigating his mobility scooter when a Serve Robotics delivery robot repeatedly obstructed his path, culminating in a collision that damaged his chair and ignited widespread debate. Captured on Chaney’s iPhone, the video shows the robot swerving erratically, blocking his way multiple times before abruptly stopping, forcing Chaney to crash into it…
Why many young adults turn on TV or movie subtitles, according to a new poll
September 28, 2025 | Source: The Associated Press
Taylor Heine, 35, is often multitasking when she watches TV shows or movies at home. “I’ll be playing on the phone, loving on my animals, maybe cleaning, picking up,” she says. So she watches with the subtitles turned on.“That way I can kind of switch back and forth, be able to listen to it or look back at the screen and I know what’s going on, Heine says.” She can also catch up if she misses a piece of dialogue. It benefits her fiancé, too. “When he’s cooking or banging around in the kitchen, that way I don’t have to blare the TV,” she says…
DOJ’s Lawsuit Against Uber Illustrates the Limits of Tech Innovation for Accessibility
September 29, 2025 | Source: Tech Policy Press
Many people with disabilities rely on ride-sharing services as part of their daily lives to fill gaps in access to other forms of transit. But what happens when this technology is not as reliable as it may appear to be? A lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against Uber this month alleges that this has been the experience of people like Michael May, a blind person with a guide dog who allegedly experienced multiple ride denials when using Uber. Kingsly Joseph, a manual wheelchair user, said he has had similar experiences and that Uber drivers “routinely” deny him rides because he uses a wheelchair…
Blind Plaintiff Sues DraftKings Over Website Accessibility Barriers
September 29, 2025 | Source: Casino and About Lawsuits
A class action filed last week in a New York federal court alleges the company’s website blocks blind consumers from accessing its fantasy sports and gambling services, in violation of federal disability laws. Plaintiff Anthony Benson, a Bronx resident who is permanently blind, claims he attempted to enter DFS contests and bet on sports live on DraftKings’ platform this summer but found it to be incompatible with his screen-reading software. Blind internet users rely on screen-reading software, which converts websites into speech or braille…
DC’s disability transportation time tax
September 29, 2025 | Source: Greater Greater Washington
I moved to DC 26 years ago for a job and the accessible public transit that would get me to it. As a nearly lifelong power wheelchair user, accessible transportation was one of my most important criteria for choosing where to move, and it continues to shape how I make choices in my life. I am unable to drive with my disability, and wouldn’t have been able to afford the steep expense of an accessible vehicle even if I did. Over my first 10 years in DC, accessible transportation options generally improved…
Carden Wyckoff becomes youngest Atlanta City Council member, brings disability advocacy to City Hall
September 29, 2025 | Source: CBS News
Carden Wyckoff never planned to enter politics. But at 32, she is now the youngest member of the Atlanta City Council, and the only one in a wheelchair. For Wyckoff, serving the city isn’t about politics. It’s personal. “Accessibility is often an afterthought, and it’s often not represented,” she said. Born with a form of muscular dystrophy, Wyckoff watched her independence shrink as she grew older. After college, she transitioned to a power wheelchair… a turning point that gave her new purpose…
Nashville Metro Council approves resolution for ADA accessibility audit
September 29, 2025 | Source: News Channel 5
Hopping in and out of cars around Nashville is something many people do without thinking twice. However, for people with disabilities, accessing all that Music City has to offer can be challenging. Metro Council recently approved a resolution to launch an ADA accessibility audit that will take a closer look at how accessible Nashville is for people with disabilities. I heard from advocates in the disabled community about some of the issues they’d like to see addressed. Nashville native Kasondra Farmer doesn’t shy away from social outings…
Colorado RTD riders with disabilities will have to pay more for door-to-door access
October 1, 2025 | Source: CBS News
Tuesday’s RTD board meeting lasted more than three hours, voting on changes to the Access on Demand services late at night. The Access on Demand program provides free or subsidized curb-to-curb ride access for people with disabilities. The program works with partners, including Uber and Lyft. The proposed changes included: an increase in fare from free to $6.50, a decrease in subsidy for each ride from $25 to $20, and 22 hours of ride service instead of the previous 25, and what RTD says is an expanded service area to anywhere in the Regional Transportation District…

October 1, 2025 | Source: KTXS

Kennedy, Jr. According to Secretary Kennedy, the ‘Autism Data Science Initiative’ is the first FDA -recognized treatment pathway, educating doctors and families about “potential risks,” and funding research projects…
Tennessee won’t track how many students with disabilities benefit from new voucher program
October 2, 2025 | Source: Chalkbeat Tennessee
Tennessee isn’t tracking how many students with disabilities enroll in its new statewide education voucher program, the latest concern for education advocates who say the program needs to be more transparent. The Tennessee Department of Education said disability documentation is not required in the law establishing the Education Freedom Scholarship program earlier this year. The department also isn’t tracking how many first-year vouchers went to students already enrolled in private schools. Some advocates and lawmakers argue robust data is needed to determine who is benefiting from the program…

And it is slightly more common among men than women.

Canadian seniors react to Canada Post’s door-to-door delivery changes
September 26, 2025 | Source: CTV News- Canada
Rain or shine, John Peters has a reason to grab his mail almost every day. He gets all his bills delivered by mail, along with the odd letter, charity pamphlet or subscription. Luckily for the 78-year-old, he’s one of four million Canadians whose mail is still delivered to his door — but that is likely to change. Yesterday, Ottawa authorized Canada Post to end door-to-door mail delivery along with other cost-cutting measures to help make the corporation more profitable. The move would convert Canada’s remaining four million addresses to community mailboxes…
Calls for change after Qantas refuses to fly British woman with mobility scooter due to its battery
September 27, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- Australia
Dr Jurai Darongkamas has travelled all over the world with her mobility scooter and says she never had a problem until she booked a flight with Qantas earlier this year. The 60-year-old clinical psychologist, who lives in the UK city of Birmingham, flew to Sydney on Thai Airways without issue but was not allowed to board her connecting Qantas flight to her holiday destination in New Zealand. At the heart of Darongkamas’s dispute with Qantas is whether her scooter is a mobility aid, as she argues, or a personal electronic device, as the airline insisted during a six-month long complaints process…

Don’t trust Trump’: how UK health experts are fighting back against a war on medicine
September 27, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Wes Streeting, the UK health secretary, was in a government car heading back into central London from a flag-raising to mark the UK’s recognition of Palestine when he saw the news. “He was aghast,” an aide said. Streeting was reading on his phone that Donald Trump had just warned women not to take Tylenol – known outside the US as paracetamol – during pregnancy. The US president had alleged without evidence that the common painkiller caused autism in children. “Don’t take Tylenol,” Trump said about a drug also known as acetaminophen…

A longtime Bryan Adams fan, who uses a wheelchair, was almost denied a VIP experience with the singer due to accessibility restrictions at the Brandt Centre in Regina. Jodi MacEachern, who lives in Regina, first received tickets as a birthday gift from her sister back in May and was hoping to meet her favourite artist at his concert on Sunday. However, MacEarchern’s sister Cy-Lyn Crupi explained that since there was no VIP package available for those in a wheelchair, she had been in contact with the Brandt Centre and Ticketmaster for months to get things straightened out…

As an autistic, disabled entrepreneur in B.C., I’ve had to create the space that workplaces denied me
September 30, 2025 | Source: BCBusiness- Canada
For as long as I can remember, employment has not always felt like a place where I fit in. It was often difficult to have my accommodations and needs respected. As an autistic, disabled person living in Vancouver, I have often been left with two choices: try to survive in systems that were never designed for me, or create something of my own. For me, entrepreneurship has become a path that has worked in my favour. Most job postings claim to value inclusion, yet the reality often falls short. Many workplaces expect rigid schedules, sensory-heavy environments, and unspoken social rules that are not accessible to me…

Kelly Barton, who runs the Merseyside Sight Loss Council, arranged the visit to Avanti North West’s training centre in Crewe, where the group heard about the train’s safety and accessibility features and its layout. She said passengers often have to get on trains so quickly that it is difficult for visually impaired people to fully explore their environment…
