Supreme Court Finds Retired Firefighter Cannot Sue for Disability Discrimination
June 20, 2025 | Source: The New York Times and Legal Information Institute
The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a retired Florida firefighter cannot sue her former employer under federal disability rights law for refusing to provide her the health benefits that she had once been promised. Justice Neil M. Gorsuch wrote the opinion in a tangled decision, finding that because the alleged discrimination took place after the firefighter, Karyn Stanley, had retired and left her job, she could not bring a lawsuit claiming that she was discriminated against in the workplace. Upholding a federal appeals court ruling, Justice Gorsuch wrote that the section of the Americans with Disabilities Act at issue in the case did not cover disability discrimination claims by retirees…

The Metro: Closing the accessibility gap for metro Detroit voters
June 18, 2025 | Source: WDET
Some Michiganders will begin casting ballots in the state’s Aug. 4 primary election as early as next week, with absentee voting beginning Thursday, June 26. Federal and state laws require equal access to voting for people with disabilities. But for many, voting in person remains a challenge. According to a May report from Detroit Disability Power, only 13% of nearly 300 metro Detroit polling locations that the organization surveyed in 2024 were found to be accessible to people with disabilities. DDP Advocacy Director Eric Welsby joined The Metro to discuss how to close the accessibility gap for the roughly 30% of voters in the region with disabilities…

June 22, 2025 | Source: VTDigger
Ryan Farrington eyed the green and red bocce balls between the rails of his specially designed ramp, a device that looked like part of a roller coaster track. With his family by his side, the Rutland athlete pushed each ball down the ramp and watched them shoot across the grass as he tried to get as close as possible to the target. “He is quietly observing, but he loves every second,” said his mother Michele Farrington. “It’s great to get to be a part of a team.” Ryan, whose speech is limited, nodded in agreement from his wheelchair…

Senate Seeks Deeper Cuts To Medicaid Amplifying Worries About Disability Services
June 23, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
Just weeks after the U.S. House of Representatives approved billions in cuts to Medicaid, the Senate is considering chopping the program even more, a move that advocates say would have dire consequences for people with disabilities. Senate Republicans unveiled legislation last week detailing sweeping changes to Medicaid that are part of a broader effort to make good on President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda. The measure includes more aggressive changes than the version passed by the House in May…

June 23, 2025 | Source: Tech Times
A viral TikTok trend showing users how to make their Apple CarPlay display pink has raised alarms among road safety experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, who warn the aesthetic tweak could undermine the platform’s core safety design. The so-called “pink CarPlay hack” has surged in popularity on TikTok, with one video by @paigemoyerrr surpassing 1.7 million views. The trick involves toggling CarPlay appearance to “Automatic,” selecting a pink iOS wallpaper, and enabling the Red/Green color filter through the iPhone’s accessibility settings…

She hoped key research could help save her eyesight. Then the Trump funding cuts came
June 24, 2025 | Source: NPR
Jessica Chaikof and her older sister, Rachel, were both born deaf. At the time, the family didn’t know exactly why. The girls began using cochlear implants and carried on. “And so we pretty much lived our lives normally,” Chaikof says. But in 2006, when Chaikof was 11 years old, her older sister started having vision problems and was diagnosed with Usher syndrome Type 1F. It’s a rare genetic disorder that causes deafness at birth, and then, over time, blindness. “My mom didn’t want to scare me, but they knew if Rachel had it, I have to have it too because it’s genetic,” she recalls…
AAPD Strongly Condemns Senate Proposal That Slashes Medicaid and Threatens Disabled Lives
June 25, 2025 | Source: American Association of People with Disabilities
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) strongly condemns the Senate Finance Committee’s recently released budget reconciliation proposal, which makes devastating cuts to Medicaid that will disproportionately harm disabled people across the country. The proposal guts funding for Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), creates needless paperwork requirements that will push eligible individuals out of Medicaid, and imposes requirements that are proven to fail to improve employment and healthcare outcomes…
Some question school accessibility plan
June 25, 2025 | Source: Winona Post
This spring, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Superintendent Brad Berzinski said the district does not plan to upgrade elementary school accessibility this summer — something it had once been evaluating — as the district can address current students’ needs already. In May, a few School Board members called for an outside review of how accessible buildings are for students with mobility needs, and Berzinski signaled he was open to a review. At the same time, a family raised concerns about accessibility for their child and other children…

Cerebral palsy can’t stop Kraley from exploring the outdoors, his mom Chris Markulik said. Together the pair camp, snow ski, swim and kayak through local adaptive programs…
‘Making up for lost time:’ Poulsbo man becomes musician after hearing loss
June 25, 2025 | Source: Kitsap Sun
Luke Criner took spare batteries out from his pocket. He couldn’t risk not hearing what he was about to play. “Don’t you just hate it when your ears die?” Criner, the 23-year-old key player and beat maker of Peace Thieves, joked. The Poulsbo duo that makes up Peace Thieves looked at each other and laughed. “On the bright side, he gets the best sleep — absolute silence,” Chris Soto-Ferrell, the 25-year-old guitarist of the band, said. On that Thursday night in June, Criner and Soto-Ferrell were waiting to go onstage at the Charleston, the Callow Avenue venue that they had been aiming to play at for a year…
What to know about adult-diagnosed ADHD
June 26, 2025 | Source: WBUR
ADHD, which stands for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that’s typically diagnosed in children. But according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 15 million American adults say they have ADHD, and about half of them received their diagnoses as adults. ADHD is not becoming more common in adults, but doctors are seeing more diagnoses because the scientific understanding of ADHD is changing, said Dr. Maire Daugharty, a psychotherapist and anesthesiologist based in Denver who has written about adult ADHD…
Amid alarm over a US ‘autism registry’, people are using these tactics to avoid disability surveillance
June 26, 2025 | Source: The Conversation
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. caused controversy in April by promising to find the cause for autism by September. Claims by the new US secretary for health and human services that autism is a “preventable disease” with an environmental cause, contradict a body of research that suggests autism is caused by a combination of genetic and external factors. The US government announced that to support the research effort into autism, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), would partner with Medicare and Medicaid to build a “data platform” involving data on claims, medical records and consumer wearables…

One in three West Virginia residents live with a disability, according to federal data. The state’s system supporting thousands of people with disabilities is already over stretched due to health care deserts and a shortage of community group homes…
Speak up for disability rights and against healthcare cuts in the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

The debate over the reconciliation bill in Congress, with its deep cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, is causing shock and despondency for people with disabilities and their family members who have spent decades in the disability rights movement. The reconciliation bill — which its supporters call the “Big Beautiful Bill” — proposes brutal cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and other essential health programs. Many families are overwhelmed and openly asking each other: “What’s the point in speaking up if Washington isn’t listening?”…

Working with Children with Disabilities During Wartime in Israel
June 18, 2025 | Source: Jewish Journal- Israel
Even before Israel’s miraculous attacks on Iran, parents of children with disabilities, since Oct. 7, 2023, have been dealing with additional layers of challenges, especially when they have been evacuated from their home communities, or experienced tensions and difficulties that were distressing and sometimes traumatic even in the best of times. The directive to keep children home from school since the beginning of Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion” has provided one more challenge. So it was heartening when Ahmir Lerner, CEO of Beit Issie Shapiro in Raanana, sent out notes this week to supporters and friends of this therapeutic inclusivity center.

Community groups and local elected officials from Montreal’s Sud Ouest are calling on both the Quebec and Canadian governments to unlock funding to install elevators at this station. “People with disabilities, they have the transport adapté. But that transport needs to be scheduled all the time. So we need flexibility like anybody else. Flexibility is available through public transit, elevators in metro stations as well,” said René Dallaire, Member of Regroupement des Aînés et Aînées du Sud-Ouest de Montréal (ROPASOM)…

June 19, 2025 | Source: Big Issue- UK
“I’m not sure how political you want to go,” says Rosie Jones, who is prepared to get very political. The comedian has made her first sitcom, Pushers, about a disabled woman (played by Jones) who turns to drug dealing after her benefits are cut. As the government plans to slash financial support for hundreds of thousands of disabled people, getting political feels inevitable. Jones has been writing and crafting her six-part Channel 4 show since 2018, when the Conservatives were eight years into power and austerity…

What The June 28 European Accessibility Act Deadline Means For Brands
June 23, 2025 | Source: Forbes- Europe
On June 28, 2025, the requirements of the European Accessibility Act come into force. The intention behind the EAA is to provide fair and equitable access to digital products to the more than 100 million consumers with disabilities living across the European Union. One of the key things to keep in mind about the EEA is that it doesn’t just affect European companies. It applies to any organization from around the world selling into the EU market. It goes beyond standard web accessibility and e-commerce, incorporating areas such as computers and operating systems, smartphones, digital TV services, ATMS, ticketing machines and other digital kiosks within its remit…

The findings, from Motability Operation’s EV Transition Tracker, includes a survey of disabled drivers in Motability’s Headlight Community, which found it was even greater for disabled customers with 65% stating they won’t change until they have no other choice. The reluctance comes against positive perceptions of EVs with 40% having a positive opinion of such vehicles…

‘My mission to get myself weighed ended on a set of scrapyard scales’
June 23, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Dave Eastham could not believe what it had come to, when he arrived at a scrapyard in north Manchester in search of scales to find out his weight. The 30-year-old has used a wheelchair since injuring his spine in a traffic accident a decade ago, and wanted to know if his exercise routines were helping to build muscle mass during a Covid fitness drive. Dave had called several hospitals trying to find accessible scales, he says, without any luck. He’d also called several vet surgeries, and had even attempted to get on the scales at his local Pets at Home store, which he had to wheelie onto – all without success…

‘Disability welfare reforms could leave us worse off’
June 23, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Some people with disabilities in the Greater Manchester have told how they fear the government’s proposed reforms to the welfare system could leave them isolated and even worsen their conditions. Labour have said the changes will help more people back into work and save £5bn by 2030. They include making it harder for disabled people with less severe conditions to claim Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and cuts to the sickness-related element of Universal Credit. Stef Benstead, from Manchester, is chronically ill and believes the plans could make people with disabilities “far more ill” and is calling on MPs to vote against the reforms…

The charity defines a fully accessible home as a property with all four basic accessibility criteria that make a home visitable for most people. These are a toilet at entrance level, sufficiently wide doorways and circulation space for a wheelchair, the main entrance is free of obstructions, and where there are no steps between the entrance door and pavement…

Only one in 25 homes (4%) headed by someone aged between 55 and 64 in the North East or the East Midlands have all four accessibility features compared to almost one in four (23%) in the capital. Neurodiverse kids at camp: How programs can become places where all children belong
June 24, 2025 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
For many families, summer camp is a rite of passage representing friendship, fun and freedom. But for families of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, it can be a season of rejection, stress and exclusion. While other children pack their bags for campfires and canoeing, many children with disabilities are told there’s no space for them, not because they don’t belong, but because the camp isn’t prepared. This is a reality faced by families of children with disabilities. That’s why colleagues and I created the Inclusive Camp Hub, a free, research-informed platform to help camps become places where every child can participate…

Making all self-driving pilot schemes accessible would be ‘counter-productive’ and slow us down, says minister
June 26, 2025 | Source: Disability News Service- UK
A transport minister has told peers that it would be “counter-productive” – and take too long – to draw up rules that would ensure all pilot schemes of self-driving taxis are accessible to disabled people. Labour’s rail minister Lord [Peter] Hendy was responding to concerns from disabled peer Baroness [Sal] Brinton, who had asked whether the government would make sure disabled people could use the self-driving vehicles when the pilots begin in England next spring. The former president of the Liberal Democrats told Disability News Service (DNS) earlier this month that she was “very, very concerned” that the government was planning to allow companies to launch self-driving taxis and minibuses…

Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
