The SAVE America Act Threatens Accessible Voting for People with Disabilities
March 20, 2026 | Source: The Arc
As Congress debates the SAVE America Act, people with disabilities have reason to be alarmed. The bill would require in-person proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, government-issued photo ID that matches current name and address for in-person voting, and copies of photo ID with mail-in ballots. For voters with disabilities, that means new barriers at every stage of the voting process. The reality is that too many people with disabilities face real barriers to voting…
How A Trump-Backed Voting Bill Could Impact People With Disabilities
March 23, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
President Donald Trump says voting changes are his number one priority, but concerns are running high that his plan could make it harder for people with disabilities to cast their ballots. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, known as the SAVE America Act, last month. The legislation is now being debated in the Senate. Under the bill, individuals would have to produce what’s known as documentary proof of U.S. citizenship — such as a birth certificate or passport — in person in order to register to vote…
How the SAVE America Act Hurts Disabled Voters
March 23, 2026 | Source: TIME
I voted for the first time on my 18th birthday. I navigated my wheelchair through a community center in Maryland, entering the building and voting without any accessibility issues. I remember being so proud to participate in the civic process on the very first day I could. But not all disabled people have such an easy voting experience due to persistent accessibility challenges at the polls. As Congress considers the SAVE America Act, short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, an underexplored aspect of the debate is that it would disproportionately harm disabled voters…

Viral video appears to show blind plane passenger caught in tense service dog dispute
March 19, 2026 | Source: Fox
A blind passenger traveling with his guide dog found himself at the center of a tense in-flight dispute after other travelers claimed their own service animal couldn’t sit nearby, a viral video of the incident appeared to show. The onboard disagreement escalated as other passengers also sought to use the underseat space reserved for the guide dog, raising questions about enforcing service animal rules on commercial flights. The video has since gone viral, drawing nearly 500,000 likes and widespread reaction online…
With Settlement, Lyft Pushed To Improve Accessibility
March 20, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
A major ride-sharing service is facing new pressure to ensure equal access for people with disabilities. Lyft reached a settlement this month with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights over allegations that drivers repeatedly denied rides to Tori Andres, a student who is blind, after they learned that she travels with a service dog. The agreement, which has national implications, calls for Lyft to improve its policies, educate drivers and to update its app, according to the Minnesota agency…
Cambridge’s disability policies draw more questions than answers
March 20, 2026 | Source: Cambridge Day
Few questions were answered about Cambridge’s disability practices during a March 11 meeting of the Human Services and Veterans Committee, which heard from city departments about their accessibility practices and efforts to support residents with disabilities. The committee is co-chaired this session by city councillors Marc McGovern and Ayah Al-Zubi. At the start of the meeting, McGovern said he called it because of concerns raised by residents. “It was brought to my attention by a number of folks who, rightfully, were concerned that we [may] think about disabled residents and their problems, but we don’t actually talk about them publicly that much…
Parent questions Merkel Elementary accessibility; district says campus is above ADA code
March 23, 2026 | Source: KTXS
At Merkel Elementary, one parent is raising questions as to whether the campus is truly accessible to all students. “My son Jetson is almost six,” said Jenna Bradberry. “He is in kindergarten at Merkel ISD. He is a handicapped student. He’s got low vision and left-sided cerebral palsy, so he does use a wheelchair, but he is also able to walk sometimes.” For Bradberry, getting her son to school takes extra planning. KTXS visited Merkel Elementary and noticed two ramps on the opposite ends of the sidewalk…

Fifty Years of Hard-Won Rights Are on the Line: The Fight to Save Section 504
March 21, 2026 | Source: Blind Access Journal
In his homeschool curriculum, 12-year-old Luke Lunday is learning about Section 504, a cornerstone of disability rights. Championed by disability rights activist Judy Heumann, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is responsible for what’s known as the integration mandate, which requires that people with disabilities have access to services in their homes and communities, rather than an institution. It enables Luke, who has a rare genetic disorder and requires the daily aid of a nurse, to live at his Trophy Club, Texas, home with his parents…
Your Music Festival Is ADA Compliant. It’s Still Not Accessible
March 24, 2026 | Source: Afar
Four days before the start of the music and art festival Burning Man in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, Jillian Mercado made a spontaneous decision that defied every practical concern: She scored last-minute tickets, booked her first solo flight, and headed to one of the most physically demanding festival environments in the world. As a wheelchair user, the model, actor, and self-described “down to clown” adventurer saw this moment as both the promise and the paradox of festival culture. “It was my first big ‘let’s see what happens’ trip,” she recalls…
New Haven Needs To Prioritize Accessibility
March 24, 2026 | Source: New Haven Independent
Recent articles in this outlet have highlighted the challenges faced by people with disabilities in New Haven, including difficulties reaching the summit of East Rock Park, problems with the new bus ticket sales location on Church Street, and inaccessible bus stops after the recent historic snowstorms. As an appointed member of the city’s Commission on Disabilities and a local resident with a disability, I welcome media coverage that sheds light on the unique challenges these residents face and commend the city’s efforts to address them; however, we are caught in a cycle of “whack-a-mole” accessibility planning…
The Trump Administration Is Waging War on People With Disabilities. Decent Americans Cannot Let Them Win
March 25, 2026 | Source: The Good Men Project
Personally, I’d rather have a human being with dyslexia leading our nation than a felonious, traitorous rapist who has the compassion of a ham sandwich, but that’s just me. Trump’s comments, as disgusting and dangerous as they are, are hardly shocking. His body of work against those with physical, mental, and emotional challenges is well-documented and shameful: Trump’s initial 2016 presidential campaign included a vicious rally ridiculing of a disabled reporter, which in any other iteration of America would have immediately disqualified him…
Local volunteers work to make the outdoors accessible to everyone
March 25, 2026 | Source: C-VILLE Weekly
One of the reasons so many of us love this area is that in times of reflection or stress, through every season, the beauty, the wonder, and the solace of nature is freely available to everyone. Or is it? Examining that question has spurred efforts to make natural and recreational sites more accessible to those with mobility issues and other challenges. It has also motivated volunteers in this area to ensure our beautiful natural environment is truly available to all. One national effort began a decade ago with the work of a Texas birder named Virginia Rose…
Art exhibition designed for blind visitors marks latest step in accessibility at Washington Pavilion
March 25, 2026 | Source: Pigeon605
Richard Crawford has visited the iconic “Mona Lisa” at the Louvre Museum in Paris — but had to rely on his wife to describe the painting. That changed recently with a visit to the Washington Pavilion’s Visual Arts Center, where Crawford — who is a blind person — had the rare opportunity to experience that and other reproductions in a one-of-a-kind exhibition. “You can close your eyes and feel the raised picture of the Mona Lisa tactically,” he explained. “There are sensors built into the pictures as you touch different parts of it, and a narrator describes what you’re feeling — the color, the background, some highlights about it.”…

Lawler’s Bipartisan ADA 30 Days to Comply Act Passes House Judiciary Committee
March 26, 2026 | Source: Congressman Mike Lawler
Missouri lawmakers are moving to shield small businesses from a wave of lawsuits over website accessibility violations. The Missouri Senate unanimously passed legislation Wednesday that would give businesses 90 days to respond to Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuits or fix their websites. The House passed a similar bill two weeks ago with no opposition. The House and Senate must now agree on one final version to send to the governor. More than 100 Missouri business owners approached lawmakers after receiving lawsuits claiming their websites are not ADA-compliant…

March 26, 2026 | Source: U.S. Department of Justice and DOJ Complaint and Florida Politics and AP News
Today, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida (collectively, the “Department”) filed a lawsuit against United Parks andResorts Inc. and its subsidiaries (UPR), alleging UPR’s policy banning guests with disabilities from using wheeled walkers with seats, including rollators, violates Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). UPR is a global theme park and entertainment company that owns, leases, or operates twelve parks and experiences in the United States, including SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Discovery Cove Orlando, and Aquatica Orlando…
Deaf kids get hands-on STEM experiences at Kennedy Space Center
March 26, 2026 | Source: Florida Today
Hands-on learning, virtual reality astronaut training and piloting a rover: These are just a few of the experiences 14-year-old Tayla Rickert has had over the past few days at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Brevard. “I have learned so much, but I loved feeling what it’s really like inside of a rocket,” Tayla said, speaking through an interpreter. “And then also seeing how (astronauts) eat there, what the food is like.” Tayla is one of 25 students from around the country visiting Brevard for a week with Space Camp Unlimited…

March 19, 2026 | Source: NSW Government Department of Communities and Justice- Australia
Taxi drivers who refuse to accept travel subsidy dockets and cards from passengers with disability or rip off passengers who use a wheelchair face $3000 fines as part of a series of new measures to enhance transport accessibility. A longstanding loophole has meant taxi drivers who refuse to accept payment under the NSW Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme have faced no penalty. They will now be fined $3000 for knocking back paper dockets or smartcards under the scheme which provides a 50% subsidy up to $60 per trip to people who aren’t able to use the public transport system…
Hidden ‘time tax’ exposes everyday cost of poor accessibility information
March 19, 2026 | Source: THIIS Magazine- UK
New data compiled by disabled access charity Euan’s Guide has revealed thousands of disabled people across the UK are spending hours every week navigating poor accessibility information. Nearly two thirds (65%) say they lose more than an hour each week due to the hidden ‘accessibility time tax’. Findings from the latest Euan’s Guide Access Survey revealed that one in 10 disabled people spend more than six hours a week planning routine activities, while 80% said checking the accessibility of venues increases their stress and anxiety…

Canada’s federal government has just announced it’s investing $183 million in the City of Toronto to support infrastructure updates, including an improvement of accessibility on the TTC. The investment was announced on Thursday by Canada’s Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson, his Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer McKelvie, TTC’s General Counsel Michael Atlas and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. The initiative is a part of the community stream of the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund, as it aims to provide reliable funding for communities across the country amid global economic uncertainty…
Cowardly display of politics by UCP on Alberta Accessibility Act
March 23, 2026 | Source: Edmonton Sun- Canada
You look at your son or daughter with a disability, and you map out a life where they will reach incredible heights, participate fully in their community, and never feel like an afterthought to the society they live in. Because the calendar says it is 2026. We allowed ourselves to believe the basic promise that progress was inevitable, assuming our leaders would naturally prioritize building more accessible places, funding better equipment, and constructing universally accessible housing. What we assumed was completely wrong…
How these P.E.I. churches are renovating to make services more accessible
March 23, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Some century-old churches on P.E.I. are renovating to become more accessible, which includes updates to accommodate many different kinds of needs. Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown recently installed an accessible lift to take people between all three of its floors, making the entire building accessible. “It’s just been wonderful,” said Ken Heckbert, Zion Presbyterian Church chair of the board of trustees. Now with the new lift, he said it is gratifying to know there are no physical barriers preventing people from attending…

March 24, 2026 | Source: WiredGov- UK and Event Industry News and Access All Areas and Arts Professional and RouteNote
Popular festivals like Reading and Leeds, Download and Wireless are more accessible for disabled fans following a legal agreement with Britain’s equality regulator. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) took action against Live Nation, on behalf of itself and its festival operator Festival Republic, following media reports of accessibility issues at Wireless in 2022, and Download in 2023. Disabled festival-goers reported problems with being able to see the stage, a lack of accessible toilets, and event staff who questioned their disabilities…

March 24, 2026 | Source: Forbes- Spain
When Toulouse FC hosted FC Lorient on March 21st in front of 23,014 spectators, the fixture was Matchday 27 of Ligue 1. It was also the moment a Spanish-born initiative became something bigger as soccer drove accessibility efforts on a global scale, seeking to bring inclusivity to the game on an even bigger scale than before. The Most Inclusive Match, created by World Football Summit and non-governmental organization Integrated Dreams, had spent three years proving its model worked at club level in Spain…
Breaking an ankle led to Manchester student’s fashion career
March 24, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
When a fashion student broke her ankle, she suddenly realised how inaccessible everyday clothes were. The revelation after Ellie Brown’s injury in 2021 led to her setting up Recondition, a disability friendly clothes label. The brand works with people with disabilities to create adaptable jeans, stoma bags, and other pieces of clothing. Brown, from Manchester, said people – including herself before her injury – could be “naive” when it came to what accessibility looked like, yet subtle changes such as replacing buttons with poppers was “not rocket science”…

The event brought together approximately 2,000 religious leaders, representatives from civil society, and government officials, providing a platform to share experiences and best practices for making faith communities more accessible. During the forum, Adventist leaders showcased practical initiatives aimed at including persons with disabilities, including training sign language interpreters and preparing a young person with special needs for future pastoral ministry…
Majority of B.C.’s courthouses inaccessible, unsafe for intimate partner violence victims: report
March 25, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
A new report from a Vancouver-based non-profit has found that a majority of B.C.’s courthouses are unsafe for victims of intimate partner violence, and often fail to meet accessibility standards. The report from Rise Women’s Legal Centre found that, out of 73 courthouses that were studied, 42 per cent didn’t include enough space for someone who used a wheelchair or crutches. In addition, two-thirds of the court locations did not have multiple entrances and exits, and almost none had multiple ways to get in and out of courtrooms themselves…
Airport staff blindfolded to understand sight loss
March 25, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
The charity Guide Dogs has been training the staff at Exeter Airport to be “sighted guides” to make it more accessible for visually-impaired passengers. Staff have been learning how different sight conditions can change how much a customer can see and how to offer assistance if someone requests it. Working in pairs, the training involves one person wearing a blindfold, while the other guides them around check-in desks, through security and onto a flight all the time describing where they are going and what is around them…
Train travel exclusion looms for millions as EU faces accessibility crisis
March 25, 2026 | Source: The Brussels Times- UK
Nearly a quarter of people in the European Union identify as having a disability, and gaps in railway accessibility can stop them travelling by train. About 24% of the EU population identifies as having a disability, according to figures cited by the European Commission in a statement on Wednesday. A lack of accessible tourism costs the economy about €142 billion a year, it added, citing research linked in its statement. The Commission pointed to examples from the UK to illustrate the pace of change, citing estimates that it would take more than 200 years for all train stations to become accessible to wheelchair users at the current rate, and more than 300 years for all London Underground stations to become step-free.
6 in 10 Dutch webshops inaccessible to users with disabilities
March 26, 2026 | Source: NL Times- Netherlands
Most online retailers in the Netherlands fail to meet basic accessibility standards for people with disabilities, according to findings by the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). The regulator tested roughly 100 major webshops and sites run by telecom and energy companies. As of June 2025, businesses are legally obliged to ensure their online services are accessible to users with disabilities. Working alongside users with disabilities, the ACM tested whether webshops allowed them to complete purchases…
