For Patrons With a Disability, Masquerade Is a Journey That Is Accessible For All
April 14, 2026 | Source: Playbill
When I first heard rumors rumbling around the theatre industry that an immersive Phantom of the Opera was coming to New York City and it was going to span a five-floor venue full of stairs—as a notorious Phantom of the Opera mega-Phan, you’d think my immediate reaction would be excitement. Instead, I was skeptical. How was I, as someone who has health conditions that keep me from standing for long periods of time, going to journey safely and comfortably through the Phantom’s lair? In my early 20s, I experienced an onslaught of autoimmune issues all at once…

April 16, 2026 | Source: Whittier Daily News
The Grand Prix of Long Beach prides itself on welcoming diverse crowds to the race circuit. Getting around the concourse, however, typically requires walking — a lot of walking. And, depending on where you are trying to go, climbing stairs, which poses a potential problem for those with disabilities. But worry not — the Grand Prix, officials say, is accessible to everyone. The Grand Prix, the 51st iteration of which will take place from Friday to Sunday, April 17-19, has worked with the city and partnered with a company that provides accessibility services to ensure that no motorsports fans are excluded from the event…

The measure would provide two free envelopes for drivers to keep in their vehicles. A green envelope would indicate the driver has mental, physical, or developmental disabilities. A blue envelope would indicate the driver has autism…

A bill would explore making NH a ‘technology first’ state on disability. Here’s what that means.
April 13, 2026 | Source: New Hampshire Bulletin
Some lawmakers and disability advocates are working to make New Hampshire the latest to adopt what’s called a “technology first” framework for state-administered services for people with disabilities. The technology-first framework is designed to address a persistent issue within state services for people with disabilities: a nationwide shortage of professional disability caregivers, commonly known as direct support professionals. Adopting this framework would mean the state prioritizes new technologies that might be able to mitigate the need for hard-to-come-by caregivers…

April 14, 2026 | Source: WTTW News

April 15, 2026 | Source: Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund

Under the new Florida law, the only requirement to receive a pregnancy parking permit is pregnancy. The applicant does not need to show any mobility impairment or other disability. As a result, thousands of Floridians without disabilities are parking in accessible spaces that, under federal law, are reserved for people with disabilities…

Disability experts say Ann Arbor has room to improve voter accessibility
April 15, 2026 | Source: WEMU
A disability rights group looked at Ann Arbor’s polling locations during the November election and found that only a few had full accessibility accommodations. Two of the 23 Election Day sites in Ann Arbor, observed by Detroit Disability Power, had accessible parking, entrances, voter-assist terminals (VATs) and wheelchair-height voting booths. The organization’s advocacy director, Eric Welsby, says most locations did meet almost all disability accessibility standards. He adds VATs not being set up at those places was the factor that prevented those locations from being fully accessible…

South Korea’s Supreme Court has ruled that major e-commerce platforms must make their websites accessible to visually impaired users by providing screen reader-compatible text, marking a significant step forward for digital accessibility — even as it stopped short of awarding damages to plaintiffs. In a decision finalized last month and disclosed Sunday, the court upheld lower court rulings requiring leading online retailers, including Gmarket, SSG.com and Lotte Shopping, to provide alternative text descriptions for image-based product information within six months…

April 13, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Growing up with Down syndrome, Liz Etmanski says she was called plenty of derogatory names in school — but the main one was always the R-word. “[It’s like] having the wind knocked out of you, like you’re not visible to them. It’s really like an attack to your heart,” said Etmanski, an artist, writer and advocate in her 40s, living in Surrey, B.C. “People that use it think they can get away with it … all they’re doing is putting you down.” The R-word has been considered taboo for years, used as a slur against people with intellectual and developmental disabilities…
Supreme Court Dismisses Damages Against Online Malls
April 13, 2026 | Source: Chosun Daily- South Korea and Chosunbiz
The Supreme Court ruled that online shopping malls must provide “screen reader” services that convert on-screen content into audio for visually impaired users. However, the plaintiffs’ claim for damages was dismissed, as the court found no intent on the part of the online malls that failed to provide such services. Disability rights groups have since filed a constitutional appeal, arguing that the ruling “substantially deprives disabled individuals of their rights to access information, equality, and judicial relief.”…

As the founder of Blind Boy Brewing in Salisbury, Brisbane, he has turned the challenges of being legally blind into a deliberate approach to craft brewing that has earned him multiple medals at the Queensland Royal Beer Awards. Viel first started brewing as a hobby brewer a decade ago with a plastic fermenter given to him by his father. It sparked a passion that led him to join the Brisbane Amateur Beer Brewers and join an entry-level Brewing course at TAFE – but even with formal education behind him Viel faced employment challenges…
