National Association of the Deaf Sues White House for Access to Press Briefings
May 28, 2025 | Source: National Association of the Deaf Liam O’Dell 2Paragraphs
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) filed a lawsuit today to compel the White House to immediately resume providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters during broadcasts of their press briefings to make them accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people. Two deaf individuals—Derrick Ford and Matthew Bonn—join NAD in this lawsuit. This is not the first time the NAD has sued the White House for access to press briefings. In September 2020, the NAD obtained a landmark court ruling ordering the White House to provide interpreters for all coronavirus-related briefings…

Accessibility issues make good citizenship almost impossible
May 23, 2025 | Source: The Martha’s Vineyard Times
I am sure 1857 was a really good year to build a courthouse. But nearly 170 years later, it is time to admit that the Dukes County courthouse is no longer a public building — no air conditioning, no modern electronic communication systems, and most importantly, failure to ensure that it is an accessible public building. Just because the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does not require making the Dukes County courthouse an accessible public building does not make it right that citizens, even citizens with mobility issues, cannot safely use this public building…
Disability advocates work to make Kent County “absolutely accessible”
May 23, 2025 | Source: Fox17
Imagine trying to go about your daily routine – grabbing a cup of coffee, visiting the library, or going to work – only to be met with signs you can’t read, paths you can’t navigate, or doors you can’t open. This is the reality for many individuals with disabilities in Kent County.
To address these challenges, the Disability Advocates of Kent County (DAC) have launched the “Absolutely Accessible Kent” program, which aims to make the community more inclusive and accessible for all. Taylor Derusha, a legally blind test pilot for the program, knows firsthand the struggles of navigating everyday tasks…
A Striking Moment in American Activism
May 23, 2025 | Source: The Atlantic
They chained the campus gates, occupied buildings, and burned effigies. They pounded on car hoods, waved hand-drawn signs, roared in rage. In the spring of 1988, students at Gallaudet University, a school for the Deaf in Washington, D.C., staged a week-long protest that drew international attention. That year, Gallaudet was on the cusp of finally appointing a Deaf president for the first time in its 104-year history, but the non-Deaf board of trustees balked, choosing a hearing person over two Deaf candidates. Though she later denied it, Jane Bassett Spilman, the board’s chair, reportedly said, “Deaf people are not ready to function in a hearing world.”…
Is Train Travel a Wheelchair-Friendly Alternative to Flying or Driving?
May 23, 2025 | Source: Muscular Dystrophy Association- Steve Wright
When the Zelaya family travels from their home in Brooklyn, New York, to Boston or Washington, DC, they take an Amtrak train. Leah Zelaya, a former MDA National Ambassador, and her dad, Jaime, live with scapuloperoneal spinal muscular atrophy (SPSMA). “When we travel on an airplane, we rush to get through the terminal, and I never know if my wheelchair is going to come back to me in one piece,” says Leah, a 17-year-old actor, dancer, and model who walks with bilateral leg braces and uses a wheelchair for long distances. “Using the train is like a different, stress-free world. It’s way better.”…
Trump says autism ‘has to be artificially induced’
May 24, 2025 | Source: WATE/The Hill
President Trump on Thursday said that autism must not occur naturally, citing figures inflating the spike in autism and suggesting the administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission could provide answers. “When you hear 10,000, it was one in 10,000, and now it’s one in 31 for autism, I think that’s just a terrible thing. It has to be something on the outside, has to be artificially induced, has to be,” Trump said at a MAHA Commission event. “And we will not allow our public health system to be captured by the very industries it’s supposed to oversee. So we’re demanding the answers, the public is demanding the answers and that’s why we’re here.”…
How accessible are Minnesota’s professional sports stadiums?
May 24, 2025 | Source: Star Tribune
When Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) last month awarded U.S. Bank Stadium its 2025 Barrier-Free America Award, it was the first time that an NFL stadium had received the honor. But how do the other pro sports stadiums and arenas in the Twin Cities rate when it comes to ease of access for people with disabilities? Pretty good, it turns out. From wheelchair seating on multiple levels and at a range of ticket prices to on-site sensory rooms where fans on the autism spectrum can regroup and recalibrate, Minnesota’s professional sports venues are increasingly adding a range of accessibility amenities…
Blind athlete Derek Beck excels with U.S. hockey team
May 25, 2025 | Source: WGME
A local hockey player is breaking down barriers just playing his favorite sport. Derek Beck suffered a brain tumor and 22 weeks of chemotherapy when he was just 6 years old. The cancer left him blind in his left eye and with 20/200 vision in his right. He is legally blind, but this setback did not diminish his love for his favorite sport: ice hockey. He continued to play in organized leagues, though his sight held him back. “I played organized hockey from 6U all the way up till like my freshman year in high school. So it was pretty tough to follow the puck. I can keep up skill-wise with the kids. The vision would hold me back a little. So it was always tough,” Derek said…
Drivers with disabilities maneuver challenges of Hawaii’s handicapped parking stalls
May 26, 2025 | Source: Hawaii News Now
Disability parking permits help people with mobility issues, but one Oahu kupuna says some handicapped spaces are hard to maneuver. And now he’s been slapped with a costly ticket. At 81, Greg Au has had a placard to park in handicapped stalls for 13 years. “I need to have the door all the way open so I can swing my legs forward, out, and then get up and then reverse the situation getting back into the car,” he said. Last month at Kahala Mall, he got a $260 citation for parking in an access aisle, the striped area next to the handicapped parking space set aside for persons with disabilities…
A double amputee who served in Iraq is pushing lawmakers to end the ‘wounded veterans tax’
May 26, 2025 | Source: NBC News
When Army veteran Dan Nevins was forced to medically retire from the military after losing both his legs in combat, he thought he’d be financially taken care of by the country that he served. But Nevins soon discovered the so-called “wounded veterans tax” — an unofficial term for a federal policy that prohibits certain injured veterans from receiving both their full retirement pay and disability compensation. “I was told I could not receive both,” Nevins told NBC News in an interview. “And I was like, ‘Wait a minute. That’s not what I thought was going to happen.’”…
On Track with KC | Ability KC members helping make streetcar more accessible
May 27, 2025 | Source: KSHB 41
The Kansas City Streetcar teamed up with Ability KC to conduct accessibility testing to make sure everyone, no matter what disability, is able to enjoy the ride. Michael Kowal, who uses an electric wheelchair, was one of those participants. Kowal and a dozen others from Ability KC helped during the planning process, giving feedback and input on what they’d like to see. Then, they got to ride along the new route to see their ideas come to life. “The fact that you can wheel on and not have to be tied down,” Kowal said. “It’s zero entry without a ramp having to come out or someone having to come out and set up a ramp, or open a door for you to get in.”…
Effects of Federal Funding Cuts on Hearing Health
May 28, 2025 | Source: The Hearing Review
Federal support for healthcare through government agency programs and funding for research is vital to hearing health in so many ways. Unfortunately, as of this writing, agencies including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have been significantly reduced in size and federal funding for research has been drastically cut. And there may be more cuts still to come. It remains to be seen exactly how these changes will impact Americans’ hearing health and HCPs’ ability to do their jobs, but we can make some educated guesses…
Judge’s remedial order puts City of Chicago on path to install accessible pedestrian signals
May 28, 2025 | Source: WGN-TV
Kathy Austin and her guide dog, Rowen, navigate the streets of Chicago together, but it can often be a harrowing experience due to the lack of accessible pedestrian signals in the city. “It’s too difficult to cross down here with all the noise going on around us. You can hear, and it’s difficult to hear the traffic,” Austin said. “It’s terrifying. I know one person who has gotten hit in a crosswalk without a signal.” Austin, a blind resident of Chicago, isn’t alone in being able to recount instances when those like her were put in harm’s way by not having the right assistance traversing pedestrian crosswalks. Jeanne Johnson, another blind resident of the city, shared similar sentiments to those expressed by her…
U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights Opens Title VI and Disability-Discrimination Investigation into Green Bay Area Public School District
May 28, 2025 | Source: Department of Education K-12 Dive
Today, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened a Title VI and disability-discrimination investigation into the Green Bay Area Public School District (the District) in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The investigation is based on a complaint filed by the Wisconsin Institute for Law Liberty (WILL) that alleges the District discriminated against an elementary school student with dyslexia on the basis of race. Specifically, the District allegedly prioritizes special education services to students based on racial “priority groups,” a category that the student did not fall into because he is white…
NJ disability rights watchdog gets federal funding reprieve after weeks of uncertainty
May 28, 2025 | Source: NorthJersey.com
A month ago, Disability Rights New Jersey, the state’s legal watchdog for people with disabilities, didn’t know if it could make payroll. Federal dollars the nonprofit depends on had been delayed or withheld without explanation by the Trump administration. One program, which pays for legal aid to people with serious mental illness, was short more than $225,000, about a third of its budget. Other funding streams were stalled, and the federal workers who process them had been laid off. “There was no one there,” said DRNJ Executive Director Gwen Orlowski. “It was chaos.”…
People with disability are dying from cancers we can actually prevent, our study shows
May 29, 2025 | Source: The Conversation
People with disability are missing out on screening programs that could help detect cancer early, and after diagnosis, are less likely to survive, our study shows. Overall, this means people with disability are more likely to die from cancer than people without disability. We draw together evidence showing the striking inequity at the heart of current approaches to controlling cancer. But there are ways to improve access to the types of screening programs and cancer services many people without disability use routinely. We reviewed evidence from 73 studies from around the world…

New study shows millions still lack access to glasses
May 23, 2025 | Source: Anglia Ruskin University- UK
Millions of people across the world still lack access to basic eye care such as glasses according to a new study led by Professor Rupert Bourne of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). The research, published in The Lancet Global Health, measured the global availability and quality of treatment for uncorrected refractive error, one of the most common forms of vision loss. The study used data from 815,273 participants from 76 countries and found that global refractive correction (eREC) is currently at 65.8%, just six percentage points higher than in 2010. The researchers say the results mean the World Health Organisation’s target, set in 2021, of a 40 percentage point increase in eREC by 2030 is likely to be missed unless urgent action is taken across the world to increase the access to basic treatments such as spectacles.

Ensuring equitable representation across a workforce of more than 64,000 is no small feat, yet Australia Post is proving it can be done—successfully scaling award-winning accessibility and inclusion initiatives across its expansive national footprint. HRD spoke with Julie Duncan, Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Talent at Aus Post, about the organisation’s approach to embedding accessibility at every level of the employee experience. “We are in literally every corner of Australia, we deliver to every post box, location, and suburb, so reflecting every single type of person really underpins everything we do – by thinking about team member, customer and community.”…
‘Threw me a curveball’: Sask. Toronto Blue Jays fan has trip derailed by airline due to disability
May 23, 2025 | Source: CTV News- Canada
A Toronto Blue Jays fan from Regina claims he recently had a weekend trip to go see his favourite baseball team cancelled after WestJet requested he obtain doctor’s approval to fly. Jamie McKenzie has been a fan of the team his whole life. He’s watched them play before, but wanted to see them take on the Detroit Tigers in Toronto over the Victoria Day long weekend. “I was going to get into Toronto [Friday] afternoon and take in the night game,” he told CTV News. “And then take in another game [on Saturday].” McKenzie said he booked the trip three weeks in advance of the weekend series, including flights, hotels, game tickets and pre-planning transportation to and from Rogers Centre…
NDIS-approved disability accommodation company shuts down amid investor allegations
May 23, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Leanne Crumpton’s daughter Sally was only three when she died with cerebral palsy. So when the 64-year-old learned about investing in specialty homes suited for people with disability — and the potential windfalls on offer for such NDIS-approved housing — it struck a chord. She said it sounded like a “great thing” to do with her superannuation that would earn her extra income in retirement. But instead of paying her retirement income, the former nurse said she was forced back to work. “There were so many sleepless nights, waking in the middle of the night thinking there has to be an answer … what can I do?” she said…

Home support should be more accessible for aging residents, says seniors’ advocate
May 24, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
As we mark National AccessAbility Week from May 25 to 31, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of Canadians with disabilities. But we must also acknowledge a sobering reality: Alberta’s affordable housing crisis continues to push people with disabilities into poverty, isolation and unsafe living conditions, especially when accessible options are so few and far between. For more than 50 years, Accessible Housing has worked to ensure that Albertans with physical disabilities can live safely and independently in homes that meet their needs. But today, the challenge has never been greater…
‘Teachers should have to take neurodiversity training’
May 24, 2025 Source: BBC- UK
An autistic man wants all teachers to undertake training to help them better understand how to interact with neurodivergent students and employees. Tom Howard’s petition, calling on the government to make the training mandatory, already has more than 10,000 supporters. The 29-year-old, from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, hoped it would help make education more accessible, improve inclusion and safety, and ensure the mental health of neurodivergent students does not suffer like his did. “At university, things became overwhelming, the lack of understanding and reasonable adjustments pushed me to breaking point,” he told the BBC…
Student ‘so grateful’ for life-changing support dog
May 24, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
A student who relies on walking aids due to a health condition said having her family pet trained as a support dog has changed her life. Elie-Mai Riddick, 24, from Ashton Gate, Bristol, has Scheuermann’s Kyphosis, an excessive curvature of the spine which left her needing a walking stick or wheelchair to move around. As her condition worsened, Ms Riddick lost the confidence to go out alone, which led to her taking two years out of her forensic psychology degree at Bath Spa University. But after her labrador Bleddyn was trained as a specialist disability dog by the National Support Dogs charity, she is back studying with Bleddyn by her side…
The Canada Disability Benefit is supposed to roll out in July. Applications have yet to open
May 25, 2025 | Source: Toronto Star- Canada
The first payments of a national monthly benefit for low-income people with disabilities are expected to go out in just over a month. But without a minister for disability inclusion in cabinet, advocates are concerned about how much of a priority this and other disability issues will be. June is the first month of eligibility for the Canada Disability Benefit. Though its first payments are expected in July, there’s still little information available on how people can apply to receive it. Employment and Social Development Canada, the department responsible for the benefit, said a firm date for when applications will open hasn’t been set yet, but it confirmed it is expected to launch by the end of June, and said the benefit’s webpage will be updated in the coming weeks…

The event was held to highlight the urgent need for greater accessibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, while raising funds for Easter Seals Ontario — a charitable organization dedicated to helping children and youth with physical disabilities…
Disabled celebrities urge Keir Starmer to scrap ‘inhumane’ benefit cuts
May 27, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
More than 100 of the UK’s most high-profile disabled people, including Liz Carr, Rosie Jones, Ruth Madeley and Cherylee Houston, have called on the prime minister to abandon “inhumane and catastrophic plans to cut disability benefits”. In an open letter to Keir Starmer before a planned Commons vote next month, they argue that the government’s plan to reduce eligibility to personal independence payment (Pip) and the health component of universal credit is a matter of “survival” and “basic human rights”. “If these plans go ahead, 700,000 families already living in poverty will face further devastation,” they write…
Zero-cost steps to become more accessible
May 29, 2025 | Source: Canadian Occupational Safety- Canada
As National AccessAbility Week unfolds across Canada, employers are being urged to think differently about accessibility—not as a legal hurdle or costly upgrade, but as a strategic business opportunity. Mark DeMontis, chief accessibility officer at The Substance Group and a leading voice in accessibility strategy, says that when it comes to inclusion, starting small can still make a big impact. “The first thing I would say to a business is to stop thinking of accessibility as just a legislative requirement,” says DeMontis. “Start seeing it as an economic opportunity.”…
Night Owls Face Dementia Risk That Early Birds Don’t — But There’s A Twist, Major Study Reveals
May 29, 2025 | Source: Study Finds and Ana Wenzler, University of Groning- Netherlands
Your natural sleep schedule might be quietly damaging your brain, but only if you fall into a specific category of people. A decade-long study of nearly 24,000 adults has uncovered a troubling connection between being a night owl and cognitive decline — with a surprising twist. Researchers from the University of Groningen followed participants for 10 years and discovered that night owls experienced significantly more cognitive decline than early birds. That aforementioned twist? People with less education showed no such pattern, regardless of their sleep preferences…
Toronto’s largest taxi company warns of shortage of accessible cabs as early as 2026
May 29, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Shah Hzart says driving an accessible taxi in Toronto is very rewarding — he enjoys helping people. But it’s not as financially rewarding, even when he works seven days a week. The costs associated with the vehicle are equivalent to a mortgage, he says. “If I don’t work one day, I am behind,” Hzart said. “I have to work every single day to break even, I am not saving anything.” There may be nearly 100 fewer accessible taxis on Toronto’s roads as early as next year, as Canada’s largest taxi company warns most of its accessible fleet will age past the city’s limits, and there isn’t enough incentive for new drivers to take on the role…
More than a quarter Northern Ireland people not in work with disability up to 11%
May 29, 2025 | Source: Irish News- Irealand
Stormont has been urged to prioritise supporting people into work after a rise in economic inactivity. The latest figures show growth in the proportion classified as economically inactive, most of whom are those of working age with sickness and disability, carers for family members, full-time students, and early retirees. Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald said the 1.8 percentage point increase over the past 12 months to 27.2% was not statistically significant and “within the expected sampling variability”. The regional rate is 5.8 percentage points higher than the overall UK rate of 21.4%…

Maximus, a Virginia-based business, reported an increase in pre-tax profits for its UK arm from £23.6m to £29.1m in its financial year to the end of September, accounts lodged at Companies House show. Its revenue rose 2%, from £294m to £300m. The company is the biggest provider of functional assessment services, or FAS, for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Multiple sclerosis prevalence on the sharp increase: study
May 30, 2025 | Source: University of Auckland- New Zealand
The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in New Zealand has sharply risen since 2006, especially in some communities, according to a University of Auckland study. Lead author Dr Natalia Boven, a postdoctoral fellow from the University’s COMPASS Research Centre, says the study found the MS prevalence rate had climbed to 96.6 per 100,000 people as of June 2022, an increase from 72.4 per 100,000 in 2006. And notably, while European New Zealanders are being diagnosed with MS at a higher rate (132.4 per 100,000), we found MS increased substantially for Māori, Pacific peoples and Asian ethnic groups over the same period,” she says…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
