Disability Advocates Cry Foul Over Dismantling Of Special Ed: ‘Our World Is On Fire’
November 6, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
Efforts to gut the U.S. Department of Education’s special education office and move the program to another agency are already causing “immediate harm” to students with disabilities, advocates warn. Nearly a month after the Education Department moved to lay off nearly every staffer in its Office of Special Education Programs, some of the nation’s most prominent disability and special education groups say that the message from the Trump administration is clear. “Given the recent actions of the administration, the only conclusion that we can draw is that this administration doesn’t believe in educating children with disabilities,” said Chad Rummel, executive director of the Council for Exceptional Children, or CEC…
A Bay Area blind woman asked for no damages when she sued for discrimination. But the county that let her legal saga drag on for five years is now settling for $1.2 million
November 4, 2025 | Source: East Bay Times
When blind Union City resident Lisamaria Martinez sought help from the Clerk-Recorder’s office staff to file paperwork for her new business in 2019, she was repeatedly denied assistance — violating the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), a federal jury ruled. CRO staff members refused to assist Martinez with signing a fictitious business name form in 2019, stating that only the business owner could complete the legal paperwork, according to court documents. Though Martinez explained that she was unable to fill out the paper form on her own, court documents say CRO staff and managers refused to help Martinez until she left more than 90 minutes later…
How one legal team is building support for people with cognitive disabilities
November 1, 2025 | Source: NPR
A few years ago, Noah Cox noticed something about some of the people he represented in court. They struggled to communicate, think logically or problem solve. “I wanted to know their account of what happened, and I’d ask them questions. And many of them would struggle with a basic explanation,” says Cox, a lawyer in the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. “It seemed like they were having challenges related to some sort of intellectual ability.” What Cox was seeing was indicative of a broader trend: Studies show people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are overrepresented in the nation’s prisons and jails…

Kirchner Woods gets accessibility makeover
October 30, 2025 | Source: Stowe Reporter
Riding trails in Kirchner Woods on Taber Hill Road Thursday morning, Louis Arevalo noticed the smell of rain-soaked cedars and decaying leaves melting into the ground. Long a locals’ hangout for lunch rides and dog walks, these trails just became a lot more accessible through minimal upgrades. Arevalo is an adaptive rider from Essex who rides a recumbent, hand-powered bike. He’s known for tackling terrain some able-bodied riders would shake their heads at, but today he’s taking flow laps with his dog Ozul, smelling cedars and leaves and giving feedback to Stowe’s trail ambassadors about the upgrades…
Trump’s disability cuts could hit his own voters the hardest: report
November 2, 2025 | Source: Newsweek
President Donald Trump’s administration could be looking to make major changes to the eligibility of those receiving disability benefits, according to people familiar with the plans as reported by The Wall Street Journal. These changes could have significant impacts on those in red-voting states, Trump’s own supporters, as many of these are particularly reliant on the benefits. Newsweek contacted the Social Security Administration (SSA) outside of regular working hours via email for comment. More than 8 million Americans rely on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, according to SSA data…

Elliana Leone spoke up for herself as a Fredonia student with special needs stemming from the condition of Spina Bifida. She was joined by several adults to also speak on her behalf, including her mother, Kristi Leone. Elliana spoke first, introducing herself as a third grade student in Emily Thies’ class. “I was born with Spina Bifida. Moving around can be a little bit more challenging for people with Spina Bifida, which is why accessibility is very important to me,” Elliana said. She then spoke about the areas of the school that are not accessible for all students…
SNAP Cuts Disproportionately Hurt People With Disabilities
November 4, 2025 | Source: Center for Economic and Policy Research
The ongoing shutdown of the US federal government threatens the distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits this November. States, localities, and anti-hunger organizations are scrambling to fill the gap in federal assistance amid a massive wave of food insecurity. While two federal judges have ruled that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) must use contingency funds to keep SNAP flowing, the Trump administration announced on November 3rd that it will only cover a fraction of the usual benefits…

November 5, 2025 | Source: Alaska Business
Through a new program at Anchorage and Fairbanks international airports, people with non-visible disabilities can signal their need for assistance by wearing a sunflower lanyard or wristband, obtained for free from airline check-in desks. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is partnering with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program to provide visible tags for passengers who self-identify as needing additional assistance. The sunflower has become a symbol for hidden disabilities, which can range from autism spectrum disorders, cognitive conditions, and chronic health conditions to short-term recoveries…

Colleges Are Running Out of Time on Digital Accessibility
November 6, 2025 | Source: Inside Higher Ed
By the spring of next year, public colleges and universities will be required to make sure all their webpages, online course content and anything in a mobile app is accessible to people with disabilities. Compliance will require serious time and investment, making it prohibitive for many institutions. But the consequences of doing nothing are too serious to ignore. By the time the April 2026 deadline arrives, institutions will have had nearly two years to update their digital media—the Department of Justice finalized its regulations for Title II of the Americans With Disabilities Act in April 2024…
How a college in Vermont built a home for students who learn differently
November 6, 2025 | Source: GBH
A unique New England college just turned 40 years old. Landmark College welcomed its first class to campus in Putney, Vermont, during a time when few neurodivergent students went to college, let alone graduated. “Most existing college programs at the time simply offered students accommodations like books on tape or a scribe to help write your papers or somebody to take notes for you,” recalled founding academic dean Jim Baucom. He said when he was recruited to help launch Landmark, he was reluctant because there was no blueprint to follow…

Detroit-based mother-daughter nonprofit aids underserved youth and people with disabilities
November 6, 2025 | Source: Chalkbeat Detroit
Six years ago, Christina Jordan was focused on becoming a tennis star. At West Virginia University, the Detroit native played on the college team and majored in biochemistry. But, as Jordan entered her senior year, her interest in human behavior took precedence over studying living organisms. The decision to switch her major to psychology was personal – Jordan’s twin brothers, Christopher and Christian, have intellectual disabilities and she wanted to find a way to assist them with life’s challenges, she told BridgeDetroit…
ACA Premium Spikes Will Derail Disabled People’s Careers
November 6, 2025 | Source: Center for American Progress
Now that 2026 Affordable Care Act (ACA) open enrollment is underway, millions of Americans are finding that their marketplace premiums are dramatically more expensive. Congress’ failure to extend the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits has caused net premium costs to more than double nationwide for enrollees who receive financial assistance. As prior Center for American Progress research has highlighted, continued failure to extend the enhanced premium tax credits will particularly harm small-business owners and self-employed workers who rely on the marketplaces for affordable, comprehensive coverage…

November 3, 2025 | Source: Human Resources Director- Canada
An Ontario company has been ordered by the province’s Human Rights Tribunal to pay an unsuccessful job candidate who is blind more than $28,000 damages for discrimination and lost wages. The decision highlights the importance of incorporating the duty to accommodate in hiring practices and policies and, even if an employer follows some steps in the accommodation process, it may not be enough to fully satisfy the procedural duty to accommodate, according to Shannon Sproule, an employment lawyer and workplace investigator at Turnpenney Milne in Toronto…

November 3, 2025 | Source: THIIS Magazine- UK

The change is detailed in an update to the regulator’s Accessible Travel Policy (ATP) Guidance. Stephanie Tobyn, ORR’s director of strategy, policy and reform, said: “The impact on passengers when an operator fails to deliver assistance can vary greatly, so it’s right that claims for redress are considered on a case-by-case basis…

Targetted policy interventions and systematic improvements to enhance accessibility by incorporating infrastructure for persons with reduced mobility can boost India’s GDP and overall productivity, according to experts. Gaps in infrastructure and service designs for persons with reduced mobility will result in an estimated productivity loss of USD 215 billion in sectors such as tourism, sports, and transport in 2025-26, opined experts participating in the first National Summit on Accessibility 2025, organised by Svayam, in partnership with the CII and Unesco, here on Thursday…
Disabled people who want to work say they can’t due to ‘chronically underfunded’ welfare system and accessibility issues
November 6, 2025 | Source: Independent- UK
Disabled people who want to work say they can’t because of a “chronically underfunded” welfare system and lack of reasonable adjustments made in the workplace. The author of a major review on how to keep people in work warned on Wednesday that the UK is “sliding into an avoidable crisis” amid an “enormous” cost to employers from ill health among workers. Former John Lewis boss Sir Charlie Mayfield’s report Keep Britain Working found that poor workplace health costs UK employers around £85 billion a year, and called for both employers and workers to do more…

N.B. promises to remove accessibility barriers through five-year plan
November 6, 2025 | Source: CTV News- Canada
For the first time, New Brunswick has launched a five-year accessibility plan for the province, meant to improve resources and break down existing barriers for people with a disability. According to Statistics Canada, about a third of New Brunswickers live with a disability, the second highest in the country. That data does not capture those living in long-term care facilities, according to Ability NB’s executive director and Accessibility Advisory board chair Haley Flaro. “Accessibility is a right, not a privilege,” she said…
‘Moments like these are so important’: Wellcome Collection on inaugural accessibility award win
November 6, 2025 | Source: Museums + Heritage- UK
“Working in access, diversity and inclusion, it can be difficult to focus on the wins because the work is about progress against larger inequities and the incremental changes can be very difficult to notice,” explains Rachel Minott, Wellcome Collection’s Head of Access, Diversity and Inclusion. Minott is reflecting on the museum’s eventual win at the Museums + Heritage Awards, for which it took home the inaugural Visitor Accessibility Award in May 2025. Five months on, Minott said of the win, “moments like these are so important, to take stock to record how far we’ve come and the fruits of our labour.”…
Government targets accessibility gaps for persons with disabilities

She reaffirmed the Ministry is now working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority to make roads, footpaths, and jetties safer for wheelchair users and those with visual impairments…

Campaign aims to help deaf children access football
November 6, 2025 | Source: BBC News- UK
A grassroots football club has started a campaign to raise awareness of the inclusion of deaf children in the game. HS Sports, run by Harvey Scholes in Swindon, has made minor adjustments to its communication, which has allowed two young players to play alongside their hearing team-mates. The campaign has been backed by Swindon Town FC manager, Ian Holloway, who said “it’s about time”, adding there is “no reason a deaf boy or girl couldn’t end up playing top flight football”. Mr Scholes, who wants other clubs to follow their lead, said he wanted to share the journey of “talented” Stanley and Jacob to show what is possible…
Caught lying, but a singer’s viral complaint still gave China’s ‘barrier-free’ ambitions a reality check
November 6, 2025 | Source: CAN- China
The gap between the lift platform and the plane cabin door might have only been about 25cm but for Taiwanese singer Zheng Zhihua, who uses a wheelchair, it was an impassable divide. The 64-year-old singer, paralysed from the waist down since contracting polio at the age of 2, recounted his experience on Weibo trying to board a flight to Taipei at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport on Oct 25. According to Zheng, the plane had been parked at a remote stand and the lift vehicle meant to help him board stopped short…
Building the next generation of disability tech
November 6, 2025 | Source: MEER- India
When we speak of disability tech, the conversation often veers toward invention. What is the next big breakthrough? Which wearable, which app, and which prosthetic will change everything? But after 38 years of living inside a body marked by difference and navigating systems built without me in mind, I’m increasingly convinced that the question is not “what can we build next?” but rather “why haven’t we built what truly matters yet?” This is not an essay about devices, tools, or smart assistive platforms. It is a reflection on a deeper kind of absence—one that is less visible but more impactful: the missing interiority in disability tech…
