IDEA at 50: Resources To Support Students With Disabilities During the Week of Action
November 14, 2025 | Source: Center for American Progress
During its 50th year, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is under attack. Disabled students are more vulnerable than ever in the face of threats to funding, services, and federal protections, alongside layoffs to federal civil servants who oversee the administration of these crucial programs. Before IDEA, disabled children were often denied access to educational opportunities and segregated into institutions that were rife with abuse and neglect. Institutionalization peaked around the mid-20th century: In 1967, 228,843 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were institutionalized, and in 1955, 558,992 people with psychological disabilities were living in county- or state-run facilities…
Federal firings leave oversight of disabled kids’ education in limbo
November 14, 2025 | Source: The Minnesota Star Tribune
When the federal government shut down in the middle of October, the Trump administration made an unusual — and likely illegal — move: It effectively shut down the Office of Special Education Programs in the U.S. Department of Education. These weren’t furloughs where employees get sent home and later recalled (and paid), but a “reduction in force” (RIF) — in other words, layoffs. A month later, the Senate included anti-RIF language in its agreement to reopen the government, so it looks like the office may be saved. For now…
Special educators, disability advocates form united front to protect IDEA
November 20, 2025 | Source: K-12 Dive
The coalition is led by the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, a nonprofit that works to protect the civil rights of children with disabilities, and the Council of Administrators of Special Education, a professional membership organization. The signers — who include educators, disability rights advocates, parents, attorneys, local disability organizations and others — are uniting against what they call threats to fragment federal services for students with disabilities. To fulfill the promise of IDEA and Section 504, “families and educators must be empowered as true partners in supporting students with disabilities,” said Phyllis Wolfram, executive director of CASE, in a Thursday statement…

Milwaukee wheelchair user questions local bus company’s accessibility after repeated issues
November 14, 2025 | Source: TMJ4
A 22-year-old Milwaukee woman says she faced discrimination from a bus driver who was unwilling to accommodate her wheelchair during a recent trip to Madison. Ebony Lewis, who has arthrogryposis, a muscle disorder where joints are locked in a fixed position with clubbed hands and feet, recorded her interaction with a Badger Bus driver during Halloween weekend after the driver questioned her need for wheelchair accessibility. “This world is not built for people like me, you know,” Lewis said. “It feels like the world should adapt to me, but it’s more I’m adapting to the world.”…
Wheelchair? Hearing Aids? Yes. ‘Disabled’? No Way.
November 15, 2025 | Source: The New York Times
In her house in Ypsilanti, Mich., Barbara Meade said, “there are walkers and wheelchairs and oxygen and cannulas all over the place.” Ms. Meade, 82, has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, so a portable oxygen tank accompanies her everywhere. Spinal stenosis limits her mobility, necessitating the walkers and wheelchairs and considerable help from her husband, Dennis Meade, who serves as her primary caregiver. “I know I need hearing aids,” Ms. Meade added. “My hearing is horrible.” She acquired a pair a few years ago but rarely uses them…
Disability rights activist and author Alice Wong dies at 51
November 15, 2025 | Source: NPR and The Guardian and The New York Times and USA Today and Disability Debrief
Alice Wong, an author and activist who fought for disability rights and justice, has died. Wong was 51 years old. The MacArthur “Genius” Award-winner died Friday of an infection at the University of California, San Francisco hospital, according to an email sent to NPR by friend and fellow activist Sandy Ho. “Alice Wong was a hysterical friend, writer, activist and disability justice luminary whose influence was outsized,” wrote Ho. “Her media empire, the Disability Visibility Project, left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of our country. The legacy of her work will carry on.”…
Deaf Man Sues Tesla for Firing Him When His Hearing Aids Malfunctioned
November 15, 2025 | Source: Futurism
A former Tesla employee claims he was fired after raising complaints about how the extreme heat of his work environment was causing his hearing aids to malfunction. The man, Hans Kohls, made the allegations in a lawsuit against the Elon Musk owned automaker, which was filed Monday and obtained by The Independent. Kohls, who is deaf, previously worked at Tesla’s enormous Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where he was given a job melting aluminum at 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the reporting…
‘It’s important that we tell our own stories’: how the Wicked movies are helping disability representation on screen
November 16, 2025 | Source: The Guardian
Disabled actor Marissa Bode, who plays the prominent role of Nessarose Thropp in the hit film musical Wicked and its forthcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, has called for improved representation for disabled performers in the entertainment industry – and specifically an end to what activists call “cripping up” – casting non-disabled actors in disabled character roles. “I really hope my casting sets precedent,” says Bode, adding: “It’s just navigating a world and a system that we have just not been acknowledged in as we should be.”…
Did BART address disability access in rolling out its new gates?
November 17, 2025 | Source: The Oaklandside
Last year, to great fanfare, the Bay Area Rapid Transit agency began installing new hardened fare gates. BART said they’d make the system safer and save millions of dollars in fare evasion. BART also said the designs would enhance accessibility. But The Oaklandside has learned that several concerns raised by BART’s Accessibility Task Force were not incorporated into the new designs. Advocates say design flaws make the $90 million gates worse, in some ways, than the old ones. Emily Witkin is a committee member of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities and was a member of BART’s Accessibility Task Force during the period when the new gates were being developed…
Extreme Equalizers: These Moab Guides Are Making Adventure Accessible to People with Disabilities
November 18, 2025 | Source: Outside
A few years ago, Faith Dickey went climbing in Utah’s Indian Creek with Jack Ryan Greener, who became quadriplegic in 2018 after a jiu-jitsu accident. While climbing, Dickey and Greener began wondering whether he might be able to highline—the act of walking a thin slackline strung high above the earth. Greener could take steps with trekking poles, but he had a hard time placing his feet with precision, partly due to involuntary muscle spasms. Dickey started by taking Greener to a park, where she set up a slackline right off the ground…
Athens looks at accessibility, ADA compliance concerns
November 18, 2025 | Source: The Post
Athens City Commission on Disabilities Chair Davey McNelly said the city is failing to meet federal accessibility requirements, an allegation city officials dispute. “The city of Athens is currently egregiously out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” McNelly said in an email. However, his statement contradicts that of Athens Law Director Lisa Eliason. “To the best of my knowledge, the City is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” Eliason said in an email. The ADA, signed into law in 1990, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and requires local governments to ensure accessible facilities, programs and public spaces…

During a hearing Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, attorneys in the cases brought by Officer Andrew Mahoney told Judge Bradley S. Phillips that both lawsuits were resolved. A minute order prepared by the judge’s clerk did not divulge the settlement term…
Trump Administration Announces Steps to Dismantle Education Department
November 18, 2025 | Source: The New York Times
The Trump administration announced on Tuesday an aggressive plan to continue dismantling the Education Department, ending the agency’s broad role in supporting academics at elementary and high schools and in expanding access to college. Those responsibilities, which had been overseen by the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Office of Postsecondary Education, will instead be largely taken over by the Labor Department. Additional changes include moving a child care grant program for college students and foreign medical school accreditation to the Health and Human Services Department, and transferring Fulbright programs and international education grants to the State Department…
Family’s accessibility fight for disabled son
November 20, 2025 | Source: Charity Today News
A family are constantly fighting to ensure that their disabled son can live his life to the full. Father-of-one, Satish, 66, and his wife, Rita, 67, provide 24-hour care for their son, Vinny, 32, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy aged three. The progressive condition impacts his daily life, as he’s totally dependent on another person to help him shower, dress, and care for his every need. Before COVID-19, the family had full-time carers. Due to Vinny’s complex care needs it was difficult to find the right carers during the pandemic…
Garland creates new all-abilities committee to bridge accessibility gaps
November 20, 2025 | Source: KERA News
The City of Garland is looking to bring to the forefront a perspective many residents say has been missing from municipal government. Garland is the latest city in north Texas to create an All Abilities Committee, which will advocate for people and families who have physical and intellectual disabilities. The city council approved it on Nov. 3. The committee will advise city council members and staff about policies, programs and services, as well as identify gaps in accessibility. “How do we hone in on making sure that other people with different abilities have that inclusivity throughout the city?” said District 6 City Council member Carissa Dutton…

Disabled performers call for better backstage access
November 15, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
More needs to be done to improve backstage accessibility for disabled performers according to the artistic director of a Belfast arts and disability organisation. Luminous Soul, run by Open Arts NI, is a contemporary dance development programme for disabled dancers in Northern Ireland. The company have performed in front of huge crowds including the One Young World Opening Ceremony at the SSE arena in 2023. Eileen Branagh said the arts sector, while “probably the most forward-thinking,” does not have a full range of opportunities…

November 16, 2025 | Source: Time Out- UK
London’s transport network is always in the process of getting more accessible, from the new walk-through Piccadilly line trains to the increasing number of stations with step-free access. Next up in Sadiq Khan’s quest to make half of the London Underground step-free by 2030 is a station in north London, which is one of 17 tube stops proposed to next get accessibility improvements. Willesden Green on the Jubilee line is among those most highly prioritised to get step-free access. Prioritisation of stations happens for a number of reasons, including assessing the benefits to customers, feasibility, how many lifts are actually needed and the depth of each tube station…
His research on autism was compassionate – how could Hans Asperger have collaborated with the Nazis?
November 16, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- Austria
In 2015, I decided to write a novel about Dr Hans Asperger, who worked at the University Children’s Hospital in Vienna during the second world war. My interest was sparked by two nonfiction books: NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently by Steve Silberman and In a Different Key: The Story of Autism by John Donvan and Caren Zucker. Reading these stories told about Asperger, you would have thought they were talking about two different people. To Silberman, Asperger was a compassionate and original thinker, whereas Donvan and Zucker depict him as an enthusiastic supporter of Hitler…

Accessibility in crisis: Climate disasters expose neglect of persons with disabilities
November 17, 2025 | Source: Citizen Matters- India
On a normal day, fatigue is a persistent challenge for Smitha Sadasivan, Senior Adviser at the Disability Rights India Foundation and a person living with Multiple Sclerosis. Yet, it is manageable with rest periods, nutritional supplements, hydration, and some mild activity. But heatwaves worsen her symptoms. “During heatwaves, none of these measures help. Only limited nutrition and hydration offer some relief,” says Smitha. Extreme climate events, such as heatwaves, floods, or cyclones, pose problems for everyone…
Why can’t I find any accessible housing in Toronto?
November 17, 2025 | Source: Inside Halton- Canada
I‘m 83 years old. I cannot find any accessible housing in Toronto. Why? I am doing everything I can to keep myself and my 88-year-old husband safe. What if one of us falls and breaks a hip? Will that spell doom for us? I am terrified of being forced into a long-term “care” jail. Only seniors, people with disabilities and criminals are locked up in Canada. StatsCan reports that 27 per cent of Canadians age 15 to 65 have disabilities (28 per cent in Ontario). This does not include older adults. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reports it costs the same to build a new apartment whether it’s accessible or not…
‘It felt like there was a subtitle in my heart.’ The School embraces radical accessibility for World Ballet Day 2025

Our 1st Year students took to the Royal Opera House Linbury stage on 12 December 2025 to participate in the World Ballet Day livestream. Curated and conceived by choreographer Robert Binet, the global celebration featured international companies all responding to the same theme of access becomes art. The 90-minute stream also featured choreography by Sir Wayne McGregor, Tiler Peck, Bim Malcomson and School alumna Rebecca Myles Stewart. Each worked individually with Devon Healey, a blind artist and assistant professor of Disability Studies who specialises in Immersive Descriptive Audio (IDA), to create a portion of a six-minute long original work…

Melbourne’s tram network again fails to meet national accessibility standards
November 18, 2025 | Source: ABC- Australia
Melbourne’s tram network is falling short of national accessibility standards, with a new report finding there has been “little improvement” in the past five years. About 18 per cent of Melbourne’s tram services were accessible in 2023-24 — where low-floor trams met level-access platforms — according to the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO). The number of trams with low floors had risen by just 3 per cent since the previous assessment five years ago, while stops with level platforms increased from 27 to 29 per cent…
Disability Activists Seek Official Recognition at COP30
November 19, 2025 | Source: Earth.Org- Brazil
When a flood, wildfire, or extreme weather event strikes, people with disabilities are among those most likely to be affected – and in some cases even left behind. For this reason, disability activists at COP30 in Belém, Brazil are seeking greater information accessibility, better consideration of people with disabilities in climate adaptation, and an official seat at the table. “Climate justice is nothing without the disabled,” said Muna Shakya. She represents the National Indigenous Disabled Women Association of Nepal at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, seeking greater recognition of the impact of climate change on people with disabilities…
