Despite Hold On Ed Department Layoffs, Special Education Worries Run High
October 30, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
On Friday, October 10, the Trump administration fired almost all employees at the US Department of Education’s (ED’s) Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS). A federal judge later temporarily blocked the firings, ruling that the administration couldn’t conduct mass layoffs during a government shutdown. Required under federal law, OSERS ensures states provide a “free and appropriate public education” to the more than 7.5 million prekindergarten–grade 12 students with disabilities in the US…
Their kids rely on special education. Trump’s cuts have them on edge.
October 21, 2025 | Source: USA Today
Angela Powell had few options left before deciding to pull her autistic son from a traditional public school. The Tennessee mother said her son wasn’t getting the services he was entitled to, even in the state’s wealthiest district. Now she teaches him at home. “A lot of families can’t do what we did,” she said. “And a lot of families in Tennessee can’t send their children to private school, either.” The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as IDEA, is supposed to ensure children with disabilities receive instruction in the least restrictive environment possible, often alongside their peers without disabilities…

The $338 million project, financed by Lamar Hunt Jr., will feature an amusement park named Michael’s Wonderworld with 20 adaptive rides. The inspiration for the park comes from Hunt’s grandson, Michael Arkell, who was born with a rare genetic condition and uses a wheelchair. The park will be located at 119th and Renner Road and aims to provide an inclusive entertainment experience for all children…
Mass. blind community celebrates white cane as a ‘symbol of freedom and independence’
October 24, 2025 | Source: GBH
There are around 28,000 people who are legally blind across Massachusetts. For many of them, the white cane isn’t just a tool to help them go about their lives — it’s a symbol of independence. About 300 people gathered at the State House in Boston Friday for the White Cane Awareness Day hosted by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind — a celebration meant to highlight the white cane’s importance to the blind community, as well as legislation that helps keep them safe. “Each year, this day reminds us of how significant the white cane is not only as a vital tool for safe travel and independence, but also a symbol of dignity and equality,” said Commissioner John Oliveira…
Advocates highlight accessible housing shortage for Nebraskans with disabilities
October 24, 2025 | Source: Nebraska Public Media
Nebraska may be ranked as the 15th best state for housing affordability by U.S. News and World Report, but other metrics show the state isn’t immune to the nation’s housing affordability problem. According to the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority, the median price of a home has increased 21.25% over the past five years, while the median household income has only risen 5.53% in that same time period. Meanwhile, NIFA estimates that the state has a shortage of more than 120,000 housing units…
They Came from Planet Wheelchair! How Costuming Your Wheelchair Adds to the Halloween Fun
October 25, 2025 | Source: New Mobility
With only a few hours until trick-or-treaters descended on my house for Halloween, and no costume for me and my wheelchair in sight, I gave birth to Joltin’ Johnny. In a fit of creation that would have made Dr. Frankenstein proud, I twisted a bunch of electrical wires through a metal noodle strainer bowl, and set it on my head. I chuckled as my wife and I duct-taped my arm, along with more wires, to the armrest, leaving the other free to drive my power wheelchair and hand out candy. Wearing white-striped pajamas, face powder, and charcoal around the eyes, my revolting electric chair character was ready to shock the trick-or-treaters…

October 25, 2025 | Source: amNewYork
As president of New York City Transit, I am committed to ensuring all our riders, whether they take the subway, bus or our paratransit service Access-A-Ride are provided safe, reliable and efficient service. Because at its heart, transit is a connector – of people with each other and with this beautiful city. Our customer base is diverse with a wide range of needs. Nowhere is this more apparent than when serving people with disabilities. While we talk a lot about growing our network of reliable subway elevators – we’re opening new elevators five times faster than ever before – I also want to highlight how our Paratransit service is delivering for seniors and those with disabilities…
Celebrating accessibility, inclusion, and 45 years of Chemists with Disabilities
October 27, 2025 | Source: Chemical and Engineering News
As I write this, I’m reminded that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of persons with disabilities to our professions, communities, workplaces, and campuses. This year marks the 80th anniversary of NDEAM, an initiative led by the US Department of Labor. The 2025 theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” reminds us that inclusion strengthens every field, including chemistry. This year also marks the 45th anniversary of the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemists with Disabilities (CWD)…

RFK Jr. May Oversee Special Education For Students With Disabilities
October 28, 2025 | Source: Forbes
President Trump signed an executive order in March calling for the dismantling of the Department of Education, which requires an act of Congress. It is a goal of Project 2025. While such legislation was not forthcoming, he has slashed employees’ numbers by more than half. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as IDEA, is supposed to ensure children with disabilities receive instruction in the least-restrictive environment possible. In 2022-23, 7.5 million students, or 15% of all public school students, received services under IDEA…
‘Not adaptive, not accessible’: City of Conway Halloween setup sparks disability concerns
October 29, 2025 | Source: WMBF
Conway kicked off its Halloween March on Oct. 1, welcoming visitors to walk around the town and Riverwalk to check out the decorations. For two Horry County residents, it was not very welcoming; they say getting to the Town Green was a nightmare. “If he had to be here on his own, it would be physically impossible, absolutely physically impossible,” Dylan Carnellie, a friend. Mars Poole and Casey Kennedy are physically disabled; Casey is in a wheelchair, and Mars relies on a cane. Before the Halloween March started, the friends could not find a close parking spot or handicap parking spot in the city that was open…
Lawmakers, watchdogs acknowledge failings of veterans disability program
October 30, 2025 | Source: The Washington Post
Veterans’ advocates, a top government watchdog and senators in both parties on Wednesday denounced a Washington Post investigation that revealed exaggeration and fraud in the government’s $193 billion disability program for former military personnel. Yet lawmakers also acknowledged a raft of shortcomings in the program that they said are creating barriers for veterans seeking benefits for bona fide disabilities. At a hearing before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, officials and advocates testified about systemic flaws that allow for dubious claims, causing one lawmaker to suggest a comprehensive review of the benefits system…
Event Planner Faces Backlash After Organizing Meetup That Isn’t Wheelchair Accessible, Responds with ‘Snarky and Rude Comment’
October 30, 2025 | Source: People
A local event organizer planned a hiking activity that wasn’t wheelchair accessible — but it was their “snarky and rude comment” to an upset community member that sparked a backlash. In a post to Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum — where people share real-life dilemmas and ask whether they are in the wrong — a user asked if they made a mistake by “planning a hiking and picnic event that wasn’t wheelchair accessible?” As the Redditor explained, after planning visits to malls, science centers, and local parks, “we decided to [do] a hiking and picnic day at a nearby national park. The trails there are really pretty, but not paved, so it was definitely a more hike, physically active event compared to some of our other events.”…
People With Disabilities Struggle to Secure Accessible Housing After Disasters Like the L.A. Fires
October 31, 2025 | Source: Capital and Main
When wildfire tore through Los Angeles County’s Altadena community in January, Retha De Johnette never expected the disabled residents of the assisted-living facility she runs to remain displaced across the Southland nearly a year later. “They’re spread out all over, in all kinds of random places right now, and it’s pretty devastating,” she said. After disasters — natural or otherwise — people with disabilities often find themselves in temporary lodging that offers a roof, but lacks the safe, customized environment they need…
Jack Fact — New research from TUI finds nearly a third (32%) of people have avoided travelling somewhere due to accessibility concerns, with the main issues being a lack of sensory-friendly places and poorly designed facilities. Two thirds (66%) think it is expected that people with disabilities will face difficulties when travelling. 27% of people think the UK doesn’t do enough to support disabled and neurodivergent people in having equal access to travel.

This Ontario teen inspired tactile makeup for blind beauty enthusiasts
October 21, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Like most teenage girls, Scarlette French is figuring out how to express herself. She likes punk rock music, is into dark clothing, and likes to experiment with her makeup. But the difference for this 13-year-old is that she can’t see herself in the process. The teen, who is from Oneida Nation of the Thames near London, Ont., was born with an eye disorder that’s led to severe vision loss, and is only able to see a limited amount of light. “I do makeup as best I can, to the best of my abilities, which sometimes doesn’t look the best. But I still try really hard,” French said…

October 22, 2025 | Source: ABC- Australia
A viral video showing a lack of accessibility into the offices of the federal minister for disability has highlighted broader issues for access into public buildings, an advocate says. Disability advocate and wheelchair user Shane Hryhorec said he lodged a complaint with the Humans Rights Commission after he was unable to access Mark Butler’s offices recently. Mr Hryhorec said he was meeting with Mr Butler to discuss issues affecting people with a disability, but was left stranded outside the building as the main access was by stairs and the doorbell to request wheelchair access was broken…
Breaking Barriers: Dr. Vivian Rath Calls for Greater Accessibility in Voting for Disabled People
October 23, 2025 | Source: South East Radio- Ireland
As the presidential election approaches, an important yet often overlooked issue is the accessibility of polling stations for disabled individuals. Dr. Vivian Rath, a Wexford resident, Trinity College Dublin lecturer and disability advocate has raised concerns about the barriers that disabled voters face. According to Dr. Rath, even though there have been some improvements over the years, significant barriers remain for disabled voters. “Inaccessible polling stations, booths that don’t accommodate wheelchair users and voting materials that aren’t available in accessible formats are still prevalent,” he explains…

More than one million Canadians with disabilities could join the workforce if barriers to a fully inclusive labour market were removed—a figure with significant implications for employers, benefit providers, and the broader economy. To address these barriers, the Government of Canada has announced over $35m in funding through the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF), supporting 564 accessible infrastructure projects nationwide. This investment includes $34.3m for 405 small projects and $1,462,251 for 159 youth-driven accessibility initiatives, following two calls for proposals in 2024…
Cambridge considers Waterloo’s dual-lens model to improve facility accessibility design standards
October 24, 2025 | Source: October 24, 2025 Cambridge Today- Canada
To further the city’s goal of implementing Facility Accessibility Design Standards (FADS), a report coming to council next week recommends Cambridge take a page out of the City of Waterloo’s playbook by adopting a “dual-lens model.” FADS is a thorough guide for accessibility standards required in design, construction, retrofits, alterations or additions to city-owned, leased or operated facilities which was adopted by city council in late 2024. In a FADS implementation update report, staff stated a ministry audit of Cambridge’s accessibility practices conducted this year confirmed compliance and demonstrated a new interdepartmental group overseeing accessibility initiatives was effective…
‘I’m a disabled homeowner – can I afford to be ill?’
October 25,2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Buying your first home is a major life milestone, albeit one which comes with its fair share of challenges. For access consultant and dance teacher Katie Anna McConnell, her disability means that process has been even harder. After buying her first home, she was rejected by the major providers for life insurance, critical illness cover and mortgage protection insurance. “Disabled people are not being given the support that non-disabled people get, and to me that is the definition of discrimination and ableism,” she said…
Why Kuwait’s accessibility design code still waits to be realized
October 27, 2025 | Source: Kuwait Times
For people with disabilities in Kuwait, something as ordinary as crossing a street, boarding a bus, or entering a building can turn into a daily struggle, a reality the Kuwait Society for the Handicapped says must change urgently. Although Kuwait introduced its universal design code for accessibility in 2018, a comprehensive framework aimed at making all buildings and public spaces accessible, the society said that the code remains largely unimplemented. “The code must be enforced, at the very least, in public and government facilities such as schools, hospitals and airports,” said Baraa Abdulaziz Al-Jena’e, general manager of the Kuwait Society for the Handicapped…
Dieppe launches online map showing trick-or-treaters which homes are accessible
October 29, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
The City of Dieppe is striving to make trick-or-treating a little more accessible for young witches, ghosts and pumpkins with disabilities this Halloween. The city is encouraging people to mark their homes as accessible on an online, interactive map, so families who have children with disabilities can better plan their Halloween routes. Denis LeBlanc, the municipality’s community development director, said the initiative started last year, taking inspiration from an idea in Ontario, where a city chose one neighbourhood of around 14 homes where every house was accessible for all…
Airport Controversy Sparks Accessibility Conversation in China
October 29, 2025 | Source: Sixth Tone- China
A public tussle between a famous, disabled singer and one of China’s largest airports has reignited attention to public accessibility issues in China. In an online post on Saturday, Taiwanese pop singer Cheng Chih-hua lashed out at Shenzhen Airport in southern China for failing to provide accessible boarding services. Cheng has been paralyzed from the waist down since contracting polio at the age of 2. According to the 63-year-old singer, a “25-centimeter” height difference between the boarding vehicle and the plane made it impossible for him to roll his wheelchair directly into the cabin…

October 24, 2025 | Source: Inside Halton- Canada
This Halloween, a Hamilton family will join others in serving trick-or-treaters from the curb in an effort to make the experience more accessible. It’s part of a growing movement called Treat Accessibly. Mercedes Palermo, who lives in Hamilton’s central mountain area, says she’s a “huge advocate” for the movement, which promotes ways people can make Halloween accessible for those with disabilities, or who are neurodivergent. It’s personal for Palermo, whose six-year-old daughter Camila is autistic…
Northampton guide dog user says access refusals are rising
October 30, 2025 | Source: BBC-UK
A guide dog user wrongly turned away from a hotel says such incidents are on the increase. Kim Milward, from Northampton, said she and her guide dog Woody were stopped from entering the town’s Westone Manor Hotel, where they had been due to stay on Tuesday last week. Ms Wilward, 55, said she was spoken to “through the crack of a door” as she was turned away. She said she told staff the refusal was unlawful, but no senior manager was on site to intervene. The hotel offered its “sincere apology” and said the situation arose due to a “misunderstanding by a new and junior member of staff”, adding that it would implement extra training…
