Minnesota Uses Accessibility to Improve Maps’ Communication

Governments are developing maps to share information on a variety of topics with the public, but there are necessary considerations to ensure these digital products are accessible for all users. State and local governments are required by federal law to make digital products — including maps —usable for people with disabilities by April 2027 or April 2028 depending on population size. But they face litigation risks today if they are noncompliant. The state of Minnesota has been focused on the accessibility of its online products and content for years. July is Disability Pride Month, and this year we celebrate the 36th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). Today, people with disabilities are unemployed at more than twice the rate of people with no disability—8.9 percent compared to 4.1 percent. It should be our goal to eliminate that discrepancy. New Mexico Disability Community Urges Further State Protections Amid Federal Uncertainty

Bush signed the Americans With Disabilities Act into law, declaring: “Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down.” The law had been hard-fought, with disability rights activists working for more than a decade to get it passed. An important core group of those activists, including Judy Heumann and Ed Roberts, were based in the Bay Area, and had proved to be an unstoppable force. Some Missourians demand Department of Revenue create permanent disability accommodations

The Missouri State ID Access Coalition is demanding that the Missouri Department of Revenue provide public disability accommodations. The coalition sent a letter to the DOR director in May asking for ADA accommodations on the department’s website, over the phone and in person at licensing offices throughout the state. The coalition is made up of 22 organizations, including CoMo Mobile Aid Collective, Empower Missouri and Services for Independent Living. About a month before the coalition sent its demands, the Department of Justice extended the deadline for state and local governments to bring websites and apps to standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Vermont is not educating students with disabilities up to federal standards

Vermont is not complying with the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, according to a U.S. Department of Education assessment, and is at risk of losing millions in federal funding if it doesn’t correct course. The Education Department in its assessment said Vermont “needs intervention” to come into compliance with the law — a worse status than the state had received in recent years. Vermont was one of four states that last week received that rating, joining New York, Maine and New Mexico. States that receive a “needs intervention” rating for three consecutive years may lose a portion of annual funding…
Netflix Making Kids’ Shows More Accessible

Through a new arrangement, Netflix will make hundreds of hours of programing for kids and families more accessible to those with disabilities. Starting this week, the streaming service will add overlays with Deaf performers interpreting in American Sign Language to 73 titles. Major Social Security change will help millions who need answers on disability benefits

The Social Security Administration has made “major” enhancements to my Social Security, expanding its self-service options and notices that are available for individuals navigating the disability claims and appeals process. In a Tuesday statement, the agency said the new tools are designed to provide individuals to faster access to information and more efficient processing throughout the cycle of applying for benefits. Ottawa company develops robotic arm to lend a hand to people with disabilities

When Hollis Pierce took one of his first selfies, he was surrounded by the engineering team that made it possible. “I’m 38 years old and I’ve never taken my own selfie,” Pierce said. Pierce uses a powered wheelchair and advocates for people with physical disabilities. He is also the head of accessibility and partnerships at Ottawa-based Sielo Robotics. Accessibility group slams Metrolinx for ‘stupidest ramp,’ lack of elevator at Finch West LRT

Ireland’s national rail operator introduces new accessibility technology across its network

Ireland’s national rail operator, Iarnród Éireann, will introduce a new Passenger Assistance Management System, delivered by accessibility technology specialist Transreport, to improve the coordination of assisted travel across the country’s rail network.
