Sarah and Ricky Mathes waited out July’s deadly storms in the only home they know — a 30-foot camper off of a gravel road in the rural community of Rock Cave in Upshur County, West Virginia. The trailer has been deteriorating since they bought it used in 2022 to put a roof over their heads. They’ve covered the top in a blue tarp, a futile attempt to keep out water. The windows and doors don’t seal anymore. “Every time it rains, (Ricky) has to clean the carpet, run fans across the carpet,” Sarah Mathes said…

Medicaid Income Caps Can Cost Disabled Workers the Home Care That Makes Their Jobs Possible
August 14, 2026 | Source: Medical Daily
Disabled Americans who work describe a bind that does not fit the usual debate about benefits and employment: earning more can cost them the coverage that makes working possible. Reporting from NPR and KFF Health News documents an Iowa finance manager who gave up Medicaid rather than quit a job that paid above her state’s cap, and who now spends roughly $35,000 a year out of pocket on nursing visits, vehicle modifications, and wheelchair repairs. Medicaid work requirements arriving next year sharpen the contradiction. States are preparing to verify that many enrollees are working, volunteering, or studying at least 80 hours per month…
Tracking Trump’s Crackdown on Higher Education
August 14, 2026 | Source: U.S. News and World Report
President Donald Trump wasted no time targeting higher education reform in his second term, kicking off a fight that often seemed personal. Education in recent years has been the battleground for culture war disputes from immigration to transgender rights along with political posturing on issues like student loan forgiveness, admissions practices and free speech on campus. Republicans have long been skeptical of higher education and accuse academics of indoctrinating youth with progressive ideologies, and Trump claimed that college campuses have been “infested with radicalism like never before.”…
Deaf interpreters translate hours of Netflix content into ASL because closed captioning isn’t a fix
August 16, 2026 | Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
Any time his children want to watch a movie, Scott Keller stands next to the television in the family room to translate what they’re watching into American Sign Language. “I have the subtitles on for myself to understand, and I sign the content real-time. My children get the benefit of the movie’s content in American Sign Language and English, simultaneously,” he said via email. “Deaf people are naturally bilingual, and I know that what I am doing for my children, not many other children have the same opportunity.”…
Healthcare Providers Hit With New Accessibility Requirements
August 17, 2026 | Source: Disability Scoop
A pair of federal rules are imposing first-ever requirements designed to ensure that people with disabilities are better served when they visit the doctor. The regulations mandate more widespread adoption of accessible medical equipment including weight scales, examination tables, X-ray machines and more. Starting this summer, many hospitals and doctor’s offices that use examination tables or weight scales must have at least one that meets accessibility standards. Staff must be qualified to operate such equipment and assist with transfers…
Analysis: Rights for People With Disabilities Are Under Attack, But California Can Protect Them
August 17, 2026 | Source: California Health Report
Two years ago, my son James was invited to speak at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. at an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of Olmstead v. L.C. Olmstead v. L.C. is a 1999 Supreme Court case that said people with disabilities have a right to receive care in their own homes and live in the community, rather than being forced to live in segregated institutional care facilities. Our family got to meet with disability rights advocates and civil rights attorneys to talk about how the decision made it possible for kids like James to life happy, healthy lives at home with their families…
Hamilton was on the forefront of improving accessibility for disability community
August 18, 2026 | Source: Bay Observer
Think of ramps, tactile braille, accessible bathrooms, or accessible parking. Now think of curb cuts, elevators, captions, audiobooks, or automatic doors. On paper, each of these features was created by and for the disability community. In practice, most people use them or pass by without a second thought. Yet for those who rely on them, these simple designs shape whether someone can safely navigate their city, enjoy a movie with friends, or feel welcome in their own community. We tend to categorize accessibility as a specialized accommodation built exclusively for a specific group. But this perspective misses a fundamental truth about human design…
NYU Langone researchers build AI-powered tools to improve accessibility for blind people
August 18, 2026 | Source: CBS News
Vision-impaired New Yorkers are getting some high-tech help navigating the city. Tucked away inside NYU Langone on Manhattan’s East Side is a workspace that looks more like a technology lab than a medical office. It’s there that Dr. John-Ross Rizzo, who is legally blind, and his team are developing the next generation of technology for people with vision loss. The mission is to make everyday tasks more accessible while giving users greater independence. One of the team’s creations is Shopscout…
The Emergency Room Failed Me Because I’m Deaf. I’m Going to Do Something About It.
August 19, 2026 | Source: Mariella Paulino-Peralta
“I have a hearing disability.” It was one of the first things I told the woman at the emergency room registration desk. I explained that there was a good chance I wouldn’t hear my name if someone called it across a crowded waiting room, so I asked her to wave, walk over, or make sure I knew when it was my turn. She nodded. A few minutes later, someone called my name. I didn’t hear it. Less than twenty-four hours earlier, I had walked out of a job interview feeling hopeful about the future. Now I was sitting alone in an emergency room in excruciating pain while my husband stayed home with our two babies…
They grew up with disability rights. Now, they’re fighting to keep them
August 20, 2026 | Source: NPR
Cody and Kaleigh Brendle grew up near the Jersey Shore, going out on their grandfather’s boat on weekends, learning to swim and riding bikes together. “I was the annoying little sister — like, ‘Wait for me, wait for me!'” said Kaleigh. She remembered standing by in awe at summer camp as her fearless older brother scaled rock-climbing walls and went down waterslides. “I was like, ‘Wow, he’s doing all this — maybe I can try.'” The siblings said they’ve always relied on each other for support navigating life as two blind kids, now adults. Cody, 27, lives at home with his parents, and Kaleigh, 23, is starting law school across the country…
Stop shaming the use of AI. For some with disabilities, it’s a godsend
August 20, 2026 | Source: Los Angeles Times
As a longtime Angeleno, I’ve got the same beef with AI as everyone else in this town. I don’t want it stealing stories from writers, voices from actors or trust from audiences. But the condemnation of artificial intelligence has now blown past scripts, scraping and unscrupulous studios. Earlier this month, New York Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens begged readers never to write with AI — not even to organize notes. It’s “mentally enfeebling,” he wrote, “an escalator toward a result when you really need to make a daily habit of taking the stairs.”…
Here’s your guide to accessibility in OKC’s arts institutions
August 20, 2026 | Source: Oklahoma City Free Press
Who gets to experience Oklahoma City’s arts and culture, and what does it take to make sure everyone can? Across the city, organizations are looking closely at what accessibility means in practice, from the services they provide to the ways they include individuals with disabilities in shaping their programs and spaces. Free Press spoke with Factory Obscura, Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA), First Americans Museum (FAM), Civic Center Foundation, and Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center (OCAC) about what accessibility looks like on the ground, why disability representation matters, and how intentional design can help build cultural experiences that include everyone…

The Department of Justice’s push for more accessible websites and apps has accelerated work in states and local governments, but a majority reported that they don’t have the resources or staff needed to remediate everything by next April’s deadline. Many states have made progress on building out digital accessibility programs, but most still struggle with statewide implementation due to staffing, authority and funding challenges, according to a survey published Thursday by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers…
Disability advocates worry about ‘unintentional harm’ in bill to protect health care workers
August 20, 2026 | Source: GBH
Susan Senator’s son Nat Batchelder thrives on routine. Batchelder is 36 and has profound autism, meaning he requires round-the-clock support and struggles to communicate when he is stressed. Batchelder lives in a group home in Boston. Like many parents of children with autism and other intellectual disabilities, Senator worries his behavior could be misinterpreted when he’s in environments with people who haven’t been specifically trained to support him. “If there’s a change, or if there’s something in the environment that is confusing or destabilizing to him, he or others with a similar diagnosis could act out — maybe self-injurious behavior, or biting himself,” she said.

Edinburgh Fringe performer says ‘accessibility is a collaborator’ in new inclusive show
August 14, 2026 | Source: Edinburgh Live- Scotland
An Edinburgh Fringe performer has shared the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in theatre as she prepares to debut her own show for young audiences with complex needs. Choreographer Hayley Earlam, 36, has created Brrr, a sensory installation and dance experience exploring winter, in collaboration with pupils from two additional support needs (ASN) schools in Scotland. It has been designed for young people aged 10 to 18 with PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities), and who are autistic, neurodivergent, or use a mobility aid…
Disability community calls for urgent action on accessibility
August 19, 2026 | Source: Barbados Today- Barbados
Acknowledging the government’s moves towards long-term solutions, Senator Janeil Odle said Barbados must begin taking practical steps now to ensure disabled persons’ rights to accessibility are respected. The attorney-at-law and national advocate for people with disabilities was speaking as concerns were raised about the difficulties members of the disabled community and people with limited mobility are experiencing in getting into some courts – including some of the nation’s busiest magistrates’ and traffic courts…
China and South Africa grow cooperation on accessibility and inclusion
August 15, 2026 | Source: Mapepeza- South Africa
South Africa and China are set to deepen cooperation on disability inclusion, data, universal design, artificial intelligence and assistive technology as the two countries seek practical ways to improve the lives and rights of persons with disabilities. The commitment was highlighted by the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga during the visit of a delegation from the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF) to South Africa on Tuesday, August 11…
The inaccessible Greek summer
August 15, 2026 | Source: eKathimerini- Greece
I have not met anyone who does not want to spend a summer in the Mediterranean. They want to swim in small beaches, stroll in the ruins of an ancient city, order an Aperol Spritz and grilled squid. They come from afar, to live a few days in the once slandered, “inefficient,” “backward” Southern Europe. The “eurosummer” is mythologized, romanticized, promoted and becomes a desire or a savings goal. Greece must play its cards right and change now the way it talks and thinks about accessibility. The good example was set – with a huge delay – by the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus and the National Theater…
‘Five-foot way dining rule may impede accessibility’
August 15, 2026 | Source: The Star- Malaysia
The new Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) system allowing traders to place tables and chairs on the five-foot-way for a RM30 monthly fee risks legitimising illegal obstructions, say disability advocates. Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) chief executive officer Datuk George Thomas said tactile paving must remain clear as visually impaired pedestrians depend on it to move around safely and independently. “Tactile paving is not decorative. For a blind person, it is a lifeline. “A table or chair moved onto that path can cause someone to collide with it, fall or even be forced onto the road…
How Russia Is Using Disabled Soldiers For Frontline Assaults
August 16, 2026 | Source: Forbes- Russia
Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has produced vast numbers of casualties over four and a half years of fighting. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, in a July report, estimated Russian casualties at 1.4 million. Over a 24-hour period on August 11, Ukraine’s General Staff claimed Russia suffered 1,190 casualties. The losses are staggering, and analysts say the Kremlin has faced difficulties recruiting enough soldiers to sustain its offensive in Ukraine. Pro-war Russian bloggers have said that commanders have fed Vladimir Putin overly optimistic assessments of battlefield progress, reinforcing the Kremlin’s belief that greater manpower can eventually break Ukrainian lines…
New DfT data shows SEVEN English licensing authorities have ZERO wheelchair-accessible taxis or PHVs
August 16, 2026 | Source: TaxiPoint- UK
Seven licensing authorities in England had no wheelchair-accessible taxis or private hire vehicles licensed as of 1 April 2026, according to the latest Department for Transport figures. The finding means none of the vehicles licensed by those authorities was recorded as capable of carrying a passenger seated in a wheelchair. Those authorities included Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire, Rutland, Blaby, Epping Forest, Elmbridge and West Devon licensed where 1,113 vehicles was between them, but none was wheelchair accessible…
Speakers: Accessibility is a right, not a privilege
August 18, 2026 | Source: Dhaka Tribune- Bangladesh
Accessibility for people with disabilities and other passengers requiring assistance should be treated as a fundamental right rather than a privilege in Bangladesh’s railway services, speakers said at a workshop in Dhaka on Tuesday. The remarks came at a workshop titled “Accessibility for All: Bangladesh Railway”, jointly organized by the Ministry of Railways, Bangladesh Railway and BRAC at a hotel in the capital. The workshop reviewed accessibility at railway stations and proposed policy reforms, staff training and service standards to ensure safer, more seamless and comfortable travel for all passengers…
Disabled people in England to get 24-hour free bus travel
August 18, 2026 | Source: BBC- England
Disabled people in England will be able to travel by bus for free at any time of day from April, the government has announced. Currently, disabled bus passes are only eligible for use between the hours of 09:30 and 23:00 on weekdays, making it difficult for people to get to work or attend later evening events. They can be used at any time of day at the weekend and on bank holidays. It is believed about one million people could benefit from the change, which forms part of the government’s focus on reducing the cost of living and encouraging people into work…
Ombudsman to examine accessibility of care in NI health trusts for those with learning disability
August 18, 2026 | Source: ITV News- Ireland
The accessibility of Northern Ireland’s health trusts for those with a learning disability is set to be examined. Public Services Ombudsman Margaret Kelly said her office’s own initiative investigation will examine whether the trusts provide effective, accessible and safe healthcare to people with a learning disability. It has been described as a system-wide investigation which will look at how trusts record information about a person’s learning disability and how the information is used to provide them with appropriate care…
Deaf patient given WRONG jab after ‘completely unacceptable’ hospital mix-up
August 19, 2026 | Source: GBN News- UK
A deaf woman was given the wrong vaccine after her doctor’s surgery failed to show her a British Sign Language video that would have flagged the error. Samantha had booked a flu jab, but instead received a Covid vaccine, which the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has said has a “profound impact” on her. She had reportedly shown a nurse a note on her phone specifying flu jab only, but staff proceeded on the belief that she wanted the Covid vaccine, obtaining consent through her grandmother, who had early-stage dementia and wasn’t in the room…
Virgin Australia apologises to disability advocate removed from flight over wheelchair motor
August 20, 2026 | Source: The Guardian- Australia
Virgin Australia has apologised to a disability advocate who said he was “humiliated” by his removal from a flight over his wheelchair motor. The airline called Shane Hryhorec on Wednesday afternoon to offer an apology, two days after the Adelaide-based man published a viral video showing the incident onboard a flight from Sydney. Hryhorec lives with C5 incomplete quadriplegia and uses a wheelchair with a power assist device called a SmartDrive. In the video, which has received 16m views on TikTok and Instagram combined, Hryhorec can be seen telling the flight staff he had already taken three flights with Virgin Australia during the previous week with no issue…
Poor website accessibility could exclude persons with disabilities from essential services
August 20, 2026 | Source: My Joy Online- Ghana
Persons living with disabilities have raised concerns about accessibility barriers on websites and digital platforms, warning that poor design could exclude them from essential services and opportunities as Ghana accelerates its digital transformation. The concerns were raised at a digital accessibility workshop organised by Open Knowledge Ghana in partnership with the Internet Society Ghana Chapter. The workshop brought together persons with disabilities, web developers, and technology experts to identify challenges faced by people with different impairments and explore ways to make digital platforms more inclusive…
Missing elevator at new TTC station creates uphill battle for transit riders with disabilities
August 20, 2026 | Source: Inside Halton- Canada
When the Ford government recently opened two new Toronto light rail transit lines, it subjected Ontarians to entirely preventable accessibility blunders. My column last month highlighted one — a screw-up with way-finding floor marking to help us blind people find our way through the new labyrinthine stations. Here’s another equally ridiculous one: The government failed to include an obviously necessary elevator at the renovated Finch West station for transit riders with disabilities to go up one floor from the new Finch West LRT line to the pre-existing north-south subway line…
The DWP is not accessible to many – defeating its own purpose
August 20, 2026 | Source: Canary- UK
Jeremy Clarkson recently argued in his Sunday Times column that benefit claimants should write weekly letters of thanks to randomly selected tax payers. This is ironic, considering that Jeremy Clarkson’s rise to fame came from the BBC, which is predominantly funded by a mandatory annual licence fee in UK households. Maybe he should be writing to us? As a disabled person and claimant myself, I don’t really have any nice things to say about the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) or Jeremy Clarkson. One of my biggest frustrations with the DWP is around accessibility…
