Education Dept. Halts Funds to Programs for Deafblind Students Over DEI Concerns
September 10, 2025 | Source: ProPublica
The U.S. Department of Education has pulled funding for programs in eight states aimed at supporting students who have both hearing and vision loss, a move that could affect some of the country’s most vulnerable students. The programs are considered vital in those states but represent only a little over $1 million a year in federal money. Nonetheless, they got caught in the Trump administration’s attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion, with an Education Department spokesperson citing concerns about “divisive concepts” and “fairness” in acknowledging the decision to withhold the funding…
Parents Fear Losing Disability Protections as Trump Slashes Civil Rights Office
September 15, 2025 | Source: KFF Health News
The Trump administration has decimated the Office for Civil Rights’ ability to properly investigate a backlog of thousands of complaints, said Robert Kim, who leads the Education Law Center. The office reported receiving nearly 23,000 complaints in fiscal 2024, the highest number ever. About 8,400, or 37%, involved allegations of disability discrimination. Black children and those with disabilities may suffer the worst consequences, since they disproportionately face harsh discipline at school, including physical restraint and isolation in seclusion rooms, Kim said….
CDC temporarily revokes remote work approvals for employees with disabilities
September 16, 2025 | Source: STAT
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revoked permission for employees with disabilities to work from home, at least temporarily, and paused approving reasonable accommodations for new applicants seeking to work from home, according to a Sept. 15 email obtained by STAT.The agency’s decision stems from the Trump administration’s January directive to mostly end remote work for federal employees and is tied to an August update to a broader Health and Human Services telework policy, which the CDC email said did not include long-term telework as an option for federal employees with disabilities…
Tennessee equal employment plan no longer references minorities, women, veterans and disabled people
September 18, 2025 | Source: Chattanooga Times Free Press
Tennessee state government has removed reference to “women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans” from an equal employment opportunity policy document that directed executive branch departments to track hiring statistics for those groups. The rule change, approved by the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Government Operations, came in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump. The order directs all recipients of federal grants to eliminate “discriminatory and illegal” considerations of diversity, equity, and inclusion in hiring…

‘PowerPoint broke me’: The challenges for blind professionals
September 13, 2025 | Source: Bloomberg
When Emeline Lakrout quit her job at Unilever in March after five years with the company, it wasn’t for a better offer or a career pivot. She left, she said, because too much of the software she needed in her marketing role was inaccessible to her as a blind user and invisible to her screen reader. If coworkers asked her to use Trello, a project management tool made by Atlassian Corp., she would politely request alternatives. Software from Anaplan, a company owned by the private equity firm Thoma Bravo, forced her to squint centimeters from a giant monitor, straining her remaining vision…
Inside a ‘Hell on Earth’ in Oklahoma
September 14, 2025 | Source: The New York Times
Two summers ago, Detective Frank Bruno was at the police station in Enid, Okla., when a woman walked in with a story to tell. In Enid, a city of 50,000 people dotted by Depression-era grain terminals, Mr. Bruno typically worked on robberies and financial crimes. But in this case, the woman, Apera Tobiason, was a treatment specialist at the Robert M. Greer Center, an institution for people with developmental disabilities that sat on a sprawling campus on the main road into town. She was upset…

Now, five years later, the bonds between them—built through Asher’s initiative—continue stronger than ever. Make research accessible. It benefits all chemists
September 15, 2025 | Source: American Chemical Society
This year’s edition of C&EN’s Trailblazers celebrates 12 chemists with disabilities who are pushing the boundaries of their fields. They’re designing new drugs, transforming waste into high-performance materials, and probing the quantum world, among other advances. They’re also rethinking how we do science. Throughout the issue, you’ll read about how each Trailblazer has had to adapt their workplace or work style to accommodate their disabilities. Sometimes these adaptations have resulted in new ways of approaching a scientific problem: converting data into sound can unveil patterns that aren’t obvious to the naked eye, for instance, while more flexible work hours give people space and time for novel ideas to blossom…

September 15, 2025 | Source: WTVR
Six candidates running for Virginia’s top three elected offices participated in a virtual forum Monday focused on the biggest issues facing voters with disabilities. The forum, which coincided with National Disability Voting Rights Week, marked the first major candidate event specifically focused on disability issues in Virginia’s 2025 election cycle. The disability community represents 938,000 eligible voters — 15% of the Commonwealth’s electorate. Here are three of the key issues candidates addressed at the Monday night forum, hosted by The Arc of Virginia, REV UP Virginia, The Arc of Northern Virginia, and the Autism Society of Northern Virginia…
The quest to make WA’s legal system more accessible for people with disabilities
September 15, 2025 | Source: Washington State Standard
When G. Helen Whitener arrived in this country at age 16 from Trinidad and Tobago, she did so in a wheelchair. The right side of Whitener’s body had become paralyzed. She learned it was from a hereditary degenerative back condition that has followed her for the rest of her life. But with treatment, Whitener, appointed to the Washington state Supreme Court in 2020, hid her disability for years. She felt she already dealt with enough being a Black immigrant woman who was a member of the LGBTQ+ community…

Cal Poly to Improve Campus Accessibility with the Help of Robots
September 18, 2025 | Source: Cal Poly
The city of Irvine, Calif., is leveraging support from robots to improve the accessibility of city sidewalks. Public perceptions around sidewalk use have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, when their role in supporting other forms of mobility became quite evident. Cities are increasingly integrating technology — including AI — into their work to ensure sidewalks meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Now, robots are beginning to impact several sectors, and their use in Irvine is one such example…
Rare “tooth-in-eye” surgery restores man’s vision after two decades
September 15, 2025 | Source: CNN
When Brent Chapman was 13, he took ibuprofen during a Christmas basketball game. It was a drug he had taken before, but what happened next was anything but routine: He had a severe reaction that caused burns all over his body, including on the surface of his eyes. Chapman was in a coma for 27 days. He lost his left eye to an infection and lost most of his vision in the other. His body recovered, but his vision fully never returned. “For the last 20 years, I’ve been having close to 50 surgeries trying to save this eye, most of them cornea transplants,” Chapman said of his right eye…
Donald Trump’s Assault on Disability Rights
September 16, 2025 | Source: The New Yorker
Eight years ago, Sara Fernandez flew into Newark, New Jersey, on her way back from the Dominican Republic, where her boyfriend lived. As she was going through airport security, she heard a T.S.A. agent say to one of his colleagues, “Do I need to pick her up and put her through the scanner?” Fernandez has dwarfism; she identifies as a little person. She also happened to be a new hire in the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, which oversees anti-discrimination enforcement for the Department of Homeland Security, including T.S.A…
The city spent $300K making accessible homes. Most went to buyers without disabilities
September 17, 2025 | Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Over two years, developers chosen by the City of Milwaukee carefully renovated three previously foreclosed homes to make them livable for people with disabilities. Contractors spent approximately $300,000 in federal funds constructing wheelchair ramps, widening hallways, lowering door handles and tearing out lower kitchen cabinets so people with wheelchairs could navigate with ease. But since then, two of the three homes have been sold to individuals without mobility challenges, according to contractors — one under a contingency agreement to reverse some of the accessible features….

How two CT men with disabilities climbed Mount Kilimanjaro
September 18, 2025 | Source: New Haven Register
Before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Andy Gardner and Sam Fischgrund had to tackle several obstacles. Gardner, 32, and Fischgrund, 29, who are both on the autism spectrum, went for long walks around West Rock Ridge State Park to build their endurance. They walked on an incline on a treadmill to prepare for the miles of ascent in increasingly higher altitudes. What the two men — clients of Chapel Haven Schleifer Center, which works with adults with developmental and social disabilities — did not heavily consider was whether their disabilities would hold them back…

It’s not too late: the House of Lords can still protect disabled people from this dangerous assisted dying bill
September 12, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
The House of Lords has a rare opportunity to prove its worth to the country today, as it begins to debate the assisted dying bill. Personally, I would be in favour of peers throwing out the whole idea, which is what this dangerous and badly written bill surely deserves. But it is unlikely that they will want to go so directly against the Commons, especially on such a controversial issue. So instead I must hope that they listen to disabled people’s groups, as well as legal and medical experts, and at least undo some of the lower house’s most egregious errors…
‘A Tube strike makes the whole city inaccessible’
September 13, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
“When the strikes have already got on everyone’s nerves, people don’t have the patience to move out of my way or let the driver put the ramp down to let me on.” Dance teacher and access consultant Katie McConnell uses a wheelchair, and says Tube strikes have made it even harder than normal for her to get around London. She says a bus driver drove straight past her during the strikes, even though there was a wheelchair space available on board. TfL claims to have “one of the most accessible bus networks in the world”, and under UK law, wheelchair users have priority for designated wheelchair spaces on buses, and drivers must provide assistance for boarding and alighting…
‘Every beach should have accessible wheelchairs’
September 13, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
A woman has called for all beaches to have accessible wheelchairs after she had an “amazing experience”. Jo Whitehouse, who took part in triathlons and, in 2011 a Channel swim, hired a beach wheelchair in Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire, this summer. The 52-year-old said it got her back to her “happy place”, adding: “I did nothing but grin like an idiot, it was amazing to actually be on the beach and get my feet a bit wet.” A spokesperson for Beach Ability Lincolnshire, which loaned the beach wheelchair to Ms Whitehouse, said it wanted all the county’s beaches to be accessible…

The former builder, husband, and father has been unable to return to his pre-war, colonial home in Brisbane’s leafy suburb of Sherwood since becoming a paraplegic due to a spinal tumour in 2020. Living alone, away from his wife, takes a toll, he told 9news.com.au. “I’d much rather be at home with the family, of course,” Steenstrup said. “Oh my God, yes. “I would be able to be much more productive, and I would enjoy my life much more than I do now.”…
Pope Leo XIV approves new measures to include people with disabilities in Vatican workforce
September 13, 2025 | Source: Catholic News Agency- Vatican City
Pope Leo XIV has approved new measures to promote the hiring of people with disabilities in the Vatican, saying their condition does not prevent them from serving in Church institutions. The updated regulations require Vatican offices to welcome and support employees with disabilities, including by providing accommodations where needed, “since the condition of disability does not preclude suitability for work,” the new provision states. Health requirements for job candidates have also been revised…
The Bus Services (Wales) Bill: a moment of opportunity to create more accessible services for all users
September 14, 2025 | Source: Institute of Welsh Affairs- Wales
A Bill is currently making its way through the Senedd which promises to create a bus network in Wales that’s better integrated, simpler to access, and safer for passengers. The Bus Services (Wales) Bill was first presented at the end of March 2025 and will be debated in the Senedd next week. At its core, it aims to integrate Wales’ myriad bus services and their separate timetables and ticketing systems under the banner of One Network, One Timetable, One Ticket. While its overarching objective to simplify bus travel across Wales is admirable, it’s clear that, in its current form, the Bill doesn’t go far enough in addressing the serious barriers that blind and partially sighted passengers face when using public transport.

Experts Warn Preventable Deaths Will Persist Without Improved NHS Accessibility for Autistic People
September 15, 2025 | Source: Bioengineer- UK
A recent groundbreaking study reveals that systemic barriers within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) are severely impeding access to crucial mental health support for autistic individuals during suicidal crises, resulting in missed life-saving interventions. Despite the alarming prevalence of mental health challenges and increased suicide risk in this population, many autistic adults find themselves unable or unwilling to engage with public healthcare services when they need it most. Autistic people confront disproportionately poor outcomes in both mental and physical health, with life expectancy consistently falling short of that observed in the non-autistic population…
Abigail Boyd: Ableism behind failure to meet housing accessibility standards
September 15, 2025 | Source: Green Left- Australia
Recent NSW housing data shows just how many people with disability languish on waiting lists, including for priority housing. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 5.5 million, or 21.4% of the population, have a disability, 15% of whom are under 65 and 52.3% are 65 or more. The waitlist is logjammed, while affordable and accessible properties are scarce and the wait time for disability modification grows longer. The ageing population also rose by 17% overall in the last census. On top of unaffordable rentals, mass selloffs of liveable public housing and the creeping privatisation of social and community housing, people with a disability are left at a significant additional risk of homelessness…

Opera reviewer takes aim at accessibility policy
September 16, 2025 | Source: Limelight Magazine- Australia
A recent Quadrant review of Opera Queensland’s La Bohème has sparked debate in the arts community – not for its two-star assessment of the production, but for criticising the company’s policy of including an Auslan-interpreted staging each season. “It was only in Act III when I shifted my head slightly that my periphery spied a bizarre sight,” wrote Quadrant‘s music editor Alexander Voltz. “To the left of the stage, a mellow spotlight illuminated a signer; that is, a person performing sign language. Sign language. For the deaf. At the opera.”…

Last year, the HRT ordered the ride-hailing giant to pay the compensation to Martin Bauer and make wheelchair-accessible rides available on its platform after concluding that the company has been discriminating based on disability since it began operating in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. Uber petitioned the B.C. Supreme Court for a judicial review of the tribunal’s decision…
Rethinking Accessibility: How Universal Design Is Shaping Rural Areas in Lithuania
September 16, 2025 | Source: Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences, Institute of Economics and Rural Development
Population aging and the rising prevalence of disability are reshaping demographic dynamics worldwide, underscoring the need for inclusive environments that accommodate diverse functional abilities. While legal mandates for accessibility exist, structural and institutional barriers often hinder implementation. Universal Design (UD) provides a transformative framework that shifts the focus from individualized accommodations to systemic inclusion; however, its application in Lithuania, particularly in rural settings, remains underexplored…

Accessibility and Employment: It’s Not a One-Size-Fits-All – The Good Men Project

When I read the recently published report from Canada’s Chief Accessibility Officer, “Getting to Work: Accessible Employment in Canada,” my heart sank. Another government report on disabled workers that leaves out self-employment as a valid option. I’m Autistic, diagnosed in my late 20s. Long before that diagnosis, I struggled with learning disabilities, sensory issues, anxiety, depression and social difficulties. Yet, I always found ways to work that made sense for me. I started selling vintage clothing on eBay at age 14, then moved to Etsy to sell my original artwork…

- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
