The Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved the city’s first-ever Aging and Disability Action Plan last week, establishing a three-year roadmap to address the needs of a rapidly growing population of older adults and people with disabilities.
The plan comes as nearly one in five Santa Monica residents is over the age of 65, mirroring statewide demographic trends that project one in four Californians will be over 60 by 2031. Among adults aged 75 and older, 42% are living with a disability, according to city data…
Social Security could change eligibility rules for disability — blocking benefits for 750,000 disabled Americans
September 19, 2025 | Source: Market Watch
The Social Security Administration could change the job and age criteria that helps determine disability eligibility — meaning that 750,000 disabled Americans could be unable to get such benefits. The expected rule change from the Social Security Administration would cut eligibility for disability benefits, particularly among older workers, and reduce the size of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, according to a report by the Urban Institute, a think tank that researches economic and social policy issues…
A crown with a cause: Miss Wheelchair SC Chasity Miles-Anderson turns tragedy into triumph, advocates for universal accessibility
September 19, 2025 | Source: The Sumter Item
On Aug. 30, 2022, Chasity Miles-Anderson was shot in the front yard of her Sumter County home with an AR-15. The veteran nurse of 15 years felt the telltale signs of the unthinkable as she lay on the ground before the medics could say it out loud. The bullet left her paralyzed from her hips down, a T12-L1 injury, after it entered through her abdomen, nicking organs on its way through her diaphragm and exiting through her chest cavity. It would change some things – walking, standing – but not everything…
Disability Bias Complaints Peak as the Office That Investigates Them Is Gutted
September 19, 2025 | Source: KFF Health News
Families filed nearly 23,000 federal civil rights complaints against schools in fiscal 2024, the highest number ever. That includes about 8,400 cases involving allegations of discrimination against students with disabilities, who have struggled to recover academically from the pandemic. Under federal law, public schools must provide children with disabilities a “free appropriate public education,” to give them the same opportunity to learn as other kids. But pleas for federal intervention are in limbo as President Donald Trump’s administration moves to dismantle the Education Department…

September 20, 2025 | Source: Fox5
Carden Wyckoff, 32, is the newest and youngest member of the Atlanta City Council, and she says she is wasting no time getting to work. Wyckoff, who was appointed this week to fill the remainder of former Councilman Amir Farokhi’s term, has just 104 days in office. She said her priority is making the city more accessible for residents with disabilities. What they’re saying: “A big piece of legislation I am working on right now is a push to open door policy throughout the city of Atlanta,” Wyckoff said…
Maricopa County voters with disabilities have better access, still see room for improvement
September 20, 2025 | Source: KTAR
Sami McGinnis walked through a small conference hall and approached an accessible voting machine – a large screen connected to headphones and a controller with brightly colored buttons – determined to understand and improve her voting experience. McGinnis, whose worsening vision makes even large-print ballots too hard to use, put on headphones and picked up the controller. She struggled to identify which buttons to push as instructed, as the audio directions moved to the next step before she was ready…
Living with her monster: a disability activist inspires others
September 21, 2025 | Source: AsAmNews
As a child, Kam Redlawsk loved to play soccer. When she was 16, she began to notice a struggle to run up the stairs, her foot dragging, and frustration in the game she had usually loved. After several misdiagnoses and failed “solutions,” she set her mind towards finding answers. After years of advocating for herself to multiple doctors, tests uncovered that she had GNE Myopothy: a rare genetic form of muscular dystrophy. Being an adoptee, she never knew her parents, nor their genetic background…
West Hollywood man with cerebral palsy voices concerns after collision with delivery robot
September 21, 2025 | Source: CBS News
A West Hollywood man who had a troubling run-in with one of the city’s many delivery robots is raising concerns about the encounter and potential safety and accessibility issues they may present to the public. The video, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the moments that Mark Chaney-Gay was traveling down the sidewalk on Sept. 13. While he’s keeping his sense of humor about him after the incident, he says there still are some serious accessibility issues that need to be addressed.
“I just went to toe-to-toe with a robot, objectively funny, but also concerning,” he said…
How Sarah de Lagarde, who lost two limbs in a train accident, is using AI to promote accessible new tech
September 22, 2025 | Source: Fortune
Just one month later, her life would change irrevocably. On a rainy Friday evening in September, after working late, she made the split-second decision to take the tube home instead of a cab. As she stepped onto the platform, she slipped on the wet surface and fell through the gap between the train and platform—a gap wide enough for her entire body to fall through unnoticed. As the train departed, it crushed her right arm. “I thought I needed to save myself. I shouted for help, but no one came,” she said during an interview with Fortune at “The Story Ahead” event…
The Trump Administration Cancels Food Insecurity Report, Masking Harms of Historic SNAP Cuts
September 22, 2025 | Source: Center for American Progress
The Food Security Supplement (FSS) to the Current Population Survey has been around for roughly 30 years, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last weekend announced the survey would no longer be funded because the reports “became overly politicized,” according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal. While 2024 data will still be included in the upcoming October 22 report from the USDA, the series will end there. The cancelation comes just a few months after congressional Republicans and the Trump administration enacted the largest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in history, gutting a program that serves 1 in 8 people in the United States…
Idaho Privacy Officer Says Accessibility, Privacy Intersect
September 22, 2025 | Source: GovTech
The Idaho Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) Privacy Officer Taylor Bothke also serves as its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Program Manager — two roles that she says work together to achieve one key outcome. “I would say that ADA compliance and privacy intersect at a shared goal: protecting individual rights,” Bothke said. Data privacy has been a key priority within ITS, as has ADA compliance, as the 2026 deadline requiring all digital content be accessible for people with disabilities approaches…
Trump’s Social Security shakeup is hurting the disabled and poor, advocates say
September 22, 2025 | Source: Axios
The Trump administration’s changes at the Social Security Administration have hurt many disabled and poor Americans, says a report coming out next month. Why it matters: The findings, based on interviews with 14 benefits specialists, attorneys and others who help multiple people apply for benefits, show how the process is pushing many of the poorest Americans closer to the financial edges: potential homelessness, food insecurity and suicidal ideation. The report — by researchers from California State University, Sacramento; University of Wisconsin-Madison; and State University of New York, Binghamton — echoes Axios’ own conversations with others who do this work…

The WDBTAP provides assistance to families with children that are deafblind and who face other challenges. The project serves 170 students from birth to the age of 21 and 85% of them have 4 or more disabilities…
Global deaths, disability from heart disease continue to rise sharply
September 24, 2025 | Source: UPI
Some 19.2 million people died of cardiovascular disease in 2023, accounting for 1 in 3 deaths around the world, as risk factors such as obesity continue to rise quickly, according to a major new report released Wednesday. That death toll from “the world’s No. 1 killer” is up from 13 million such fatalities recorded in 1990, according to cardiology data taken from the latest Global Burden of Disease Study and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The authors blame the continued acceleration of heart-related deaths and disability on population growth in some parts of the world, “graying” populations in many others and — importantly — rising risk factors worldwide…

Strict rules can foster calm classrooms. But some students pay the price
September 25, 2025 | Source: NPR
Thirteen-year-old Levent goes to an Indianapolis middle school that’s been celebrated for its test scores – but he’s behind academically. His mother, Shania, believes that’s because of how often he’s been disciplined and suspended. Levent has ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which his school, Paramount Englewood, has documented as a disability. School records show he has been disciplined for misbehavior like repeatedly disrespecting teachers and for leaving campus during the school day, raising safety concerns; he’s been suspended for fighting, for “not following school rules” when he was already in trouble and for “horseplaying (fighting) in the restroom.”…

Previously canceled penalty for disabled workers returns
September 25, 2025 | Source: Wisconsin Examiner
A change to unemployment compensation that would penalize people who receive federal disability payments has made it into a draft bill to revise Wisconsin’s unemployment insurance law — despite vocal opposition from Democrats in the state Legislature. For people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) income, the change would sharply reduce their jobless pay if they lose work. For many, it could wipe out their unemployment compensation entirely, according to Victor Forberger, a veteran unemployment insurance lawyer…

Disability in Gaza: The Forgotten Casualty of Genocide
September 23, 2025 | Source: Curious Constructs- Gaza
As leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, Gaza will dominate the conversation. But there is one truth rarely spoken: Gaza is not only facing genocide — it is enduring mass disabling. More than 15 percent of displaced Palestinians live with a disability. And amid amputations, injuries, trauma, and starvation, the number is climbing every day. Yet when ceasefires are debated or aid is designed, disability is rarely mentioned. As Israel continues to bombard Gaza City and expand raids into the West Bank, families everywhere are being uprooted.

Her ethic is simple but unrelenting: Disconnection is a privilege, and the refusal to collapse is its own kind of fight…
A Cross-Sectional Study on the Quality of Life of Caregivers of Children With Disability in Chennai, India

Disability influences a person’s quality of life (QoL) in social, psychological, physical, and environmental dimensions. The caregivers of the disabled person equally share the burden, and their QoL is also greatly affected, as caregivers face substantial challenges in multiple dimensions. This limits their ability to focus their attention or time elsewhere, negatively impacting their social life and overall QoL. Consequently, understanding the QoL of caregivers, the variety of strategies they used to cope, and their mental health status, particularly depression, is crucial for providing support and intervention…
Disability benefit uptake rise due to reduced ‘stigma and judgment’

An increase in uptake of disability benefits for mental health conditions is due to “stigma” around doing so being reduced, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has said. Appearing before the Social Justice and Social Security Committee at Holyrood on Thursday as part of its pre-budget scrutiny, the minister was specifically asked about the increase in claimants of the adult disability payment (ADP) who have mental health or behavioural conditions. Somerville said there has been an increase in uptake among people who were already eligible for the payment but did not previously apply for it due to “the stigma and the judgment”…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
