Access Without the ADA: The Implications of the Federal Judiciary’s Exemption from Following the Disability Rights Statute It Upholds
August 31, 2025 | Source: California Law Review
For over thirty years, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been the main federal protection against discrimination for disabled people. Although ADA protections are ensured in the federal legislative branch and in state courthouses, this pivotal disability rights statute does not cover the federal judiciary. ADA claims are consequently litigated in federal courthouses that may be inaccessible to disabled people, yet there is little scholarship on the topic. This Note aims to fill this gap by exploring the implications of the lack of accessibility in the federal judiciary…
Former CDC Officials Say Americans Should Be Alarmed By What RFK Jr. Has Done To Health System
September 1, 2025 | Source: HuffPost
A group of former leaders of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who served under both Democratic and Republican presidents blasted Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for his latest actions targeting the agency, declaring that Americans deserve a health secretary who “supports science and has their back.” In a New York Times opinion piece titled “We Ran the C.D.C.: Kennedy Is Endangering Every American’s Health” published Monday, nine former officials, who served as directors or acting directors of the agency, warned that the situation facing the CDC is unprecedented…
Major defeat for Milei: Senate overturns veto of disability law
September 4, 2025 | Source: Buenos Aires Times- Buenos Aires
Javier Milei suffered a humbling defeat on Thursday as the Senate voted to overturn a presidential veto for the first time in 22 years. In a major political blow for the Casa Rosada, senators moved to reject Milei’s striking down of the Disability Emergency Law, meaning that the bill must now become law. It is the first time Congress has successfully overturned a veto since Milei took office in December 2023. The last time it rejected such a move was March 2003. Even more damaging for the government was the margin of the defeat: 63 votes in favour, with just seven against…

Christina Applegate’s MS diagnosis has ‘broken’ her teenaged daughter
August 28, 2025 | Source: The National News Desk
The “MarriedWith Children” star opened up on how her illness has “broken” her 14-year-old daughter, Sadie. “In my situation, Sadie only knew me as healthy, and a runner, and a Pelotoner and a dancer, and she only knew that,” Applegate explained on her “MeSy podcast, with co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler. “So then, when this came about, 2021, she was, like, stoic about it.” She continued, “And now, I see her look at me when I’m in bed and can’t quite move, or I want to go say goodnight to her in her room, but I can’t quite get down the hallway for whatever reason that my legs aren’t working that day…
Southern California city rolls out robots to ramp up ADA compliance
August 29, 2025 | Source: CoStar News
In an affluent Southern California suburb known for its meticulously planned neighborhoods and office parks, a new fleet of robots with shiny visors will soon roll down sidewalks and streets on tank-like treads. It’s part of an effort to evaluate accessibility in the city of Irvine. Officials have hired testing and inspection consultancy Bureau Veritas to analyze the city’s public right-of-way under the Americans with Disabilities Act, through the use of robots made by Oregon-based Daxbot. The robots will spread out from the city’s southern neighborhoods to cover more than 9,000 curb ramps and 950 miles of sidewalks…
On RFK Jr.’s mitochondrial malaise
August 29, 2025 | Source: The Argument
You can picture a mitochondrion, I suspect, based on how one was drawn for you in a high school textbook: It’s shaped like a kidney bean and full of squiggly lines. You might remember learning that mitochondria are “the powerhouses of the cell,” the cellular organs that provide the rest of the cell with energy to function. This is probably about as much as you know about mitochondria. This is also probably as much as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. knows about mitochondria, but he certainly thinks about them much more than you do….
Adaptive riders hit accessible Stowe trails
September 1, 2025 | Source: Stowe Reporter
Carol Weaver has been riding a specialized mountain bike for most of her life. She was born with cerebral palsy, a condition that affected all four of her limbs. A few years ago, she suffered a riding accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down.
Most riders would have abandoned the sport at that point, but Weaver doubled down in order to combat creeping feelings of depression. Today she lives near a network of accessible trails in Maine and rides two to three times a week, but it was sometimes difficult for her to find a cycling community and trails that suited her needs…
Opening doors for Americans who can’t see, but refuse to be unseen
September 2, 2025 | Source: Federal News Network
The National Industries for the Blind is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1938 through the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act, and its focus is primarily helping individuals who are blind or visually impaired find employment. That’s basically the core mission of what we do. And we do this through multiple ways. First of all, we work with the AbilityOne Commission, that’s the federal side of the program, where we obtain federal contracts, we produce products, services, and these are products and services that are produced by individuals who are blind or visually impaired…
Brazos County Veteran Service Office opens new location with increased accessibility for disabled veterans
September 2, 2025 | Source: KBTX
There are more than 21,000 veterans across the Brazos Valley, with 10,000 in Brazos County alone, according to the Brazos County Veteran Service Office. The office is making some changes to help accommodate disabled vets who might have trouble walking or moving around. From parking and public transportation to increased privacy. On September 4, the Brazos County Veteran Service Office is opening its new location at the Roy Kelly Parking Garage Offices in Downtown Bryan. Pamela Robertson, the veteran service officer at the Brazos County Veteran Service Office, told KBTX that this new location is more accessible for local vets to receive the help and support they deserve.
Justice Department Opens Investigation into Rainsville, Alabama for Disability and Religious Liberty Discrimination
September 4, 2025 | Source: Department of Justice and WHNT
Today, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division launched an investigation into the City of Rainsville, Alabama, to determine whether the City violated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), and the Fair Housing Act (FHA) by denying a faith-based organization’s application to operate an addiction-recovery facility in the City. The Department opened this investigation after receiving a complaint alleging that the City denied a Christian recovery organization the ability to establish a Christian discipleship program, motivated by a desire to keep away “drug addicts.”…
States that miss accessibility deadline risk reputational damage, lawsuits
September 4, 2025 | Source: StateScoop
As states look ahead to an April 2026 deadline to meet new accessibility requirements, an industry association warns that failing to update websites and other digital platforms in time could risk costly lawsuits and reputational damage. A report published Thursday by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers cautions that accessibility lawsuits filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act are already on the rise, jumping from 2,250 lawsuits in 2019 to 4,000 last year, with costs to offenders as high as $350,000, not counting remediation costs…
Will California ban companies from charging vets to secure benefits? Some say it should
September 4, 2025 | Source: Cal Matters
The $1,102 Adan Montalvo gets every month in disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs makes a difference for him, but he regrets the price he paid for it. Montalvo was able to obtain the benefit after signing a contract with a private company that compiles medical evidence to help veterans establish disability claims. The process worked, and Montalvo began receiving the money some 52 years after he left the Army with a bad knee. But there was a catch. His contract with Trajector Medical required him to pay five times the value of his new monthly benefit almost right away…
Repeating the Mistakes of the Past is No Way to Reshape Modern Disability Policy
September 4, 2025 | Source: The National Center for Public Policy Research
For far too long, our government has failed to believe in the economic potential of people with disabilities. The lack of belief in Americans with disabilities is more than symbolic — it’s structural. It’s visible in the tangled web of contradictory programs, outdated regulations, and policies that punish ambition and trap millions of disabled Americans in a cycle of poverty and dependence. Our government has been doing the same thing for more than 100 years — and expecting different results. This is a moment of extraordinary opportunity…
The tech wish list for state disability services
September 5, 2025 | Source: Guidehouse
As a former Deputy Secretary of Health and Assistant Secretary for the Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities for the state of Louisiana, I’ve seen firsthand how outdated systems hinder care coordination, service delivery, and communication. For over two decades, I’ve worked across the continuum of services with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)—from direct care services to leading community and state agencies—and I’ve experienced the limitations of traditional case management systems…
Parents of kids with disabilities worry over potential Medicaid cuts
September 4, 2025 | Source: WREG
There’s uncertainty looming as families try to navigate what their healthcare will look like as changes to Medicaid start to take shape. “Isaiah requires full, hands-on assistance,” his mother Jessica Peggs said. “He has Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy. Autism. He has an incontinence disorder, so we have to help him use a restroom.” Isaiah needs a home health nurse, multiple physicians, therapy, a special diet, medication, and more. The bills add up. “The therapy is reoccurring visits,” Peggs said. “They send your bill for 30 days, and it was like $24,000. But then he was on PT, OT, speech.”…

September 4, 2025 | Source: Oconomowoc Enterprise
When Griffin McCarley looks at old metal tools, horseshoes and pieces of scrap, he doesn’t see junk, but an opportunity to create something unique. Like the supplies he uses to create his art, McCarley wants others to know that often there is more than what meets the eye. At age 23, McCarley is in his last year at Shepherds College in Union Grove, where he is in the information technology track. He credits his welding hobby as a way for him to stay calm as he deals with diagnoses of autism, depression, ADHD and a cognitive disability…
Ed Department Plans To Scale Back IDEA Data Collection
September 4, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
The Trump administration is laying out plans to stop collecting certain information from states about students with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Education wants to end data collection on what’s known as “significant disproportionality,” the agency said in a recent notice. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, states are required to identify school districts with high rates of students from particular racial or ethnic groups who have disabilities, are placed in restrictive settings or are subject to discipline…
Jack Fact — According to the American Cancer Society, the number of prostate cancers diagnosed each year declined sharply from 2007 to 2014, coinciding with fewer men being screened because of changes in screening recommendations. Since 2014, however, the incidence rate has increased by 3% per year. About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. But each man’s risk of prostate cancer can vary, based on his age, race/ethnicity, and other factors. According to the CDC, based on the most recent data available, 255,395 new prostate cancers were reported in the United States in 2022, and 33,881 males in the United States died from prostate cancer in 2023.

A father’s plea, a minister’s promise: How ex-CJI DY Chandrachud’s speech on disability brought instant change
August 29, 2025 | Source: The New Indian Express- India
The air in the ADAPT Auditorium in Bandra was thick with a quality rare for an address of this nature and from a man of the speaker’s stature: raw, unfiltered emotion. On the podium was Dr. D Y Chandrachud, the former Chief Justice of India, there not just as a distinguished jurist outlining constitutional mandates, but a father speaking from the heart about the countless small negotiations families like his have to live with in India. He spoke of his two beloved daughters, Priyanka and Mahi, and their battle with nemaline myopathy…

August 29, 2025 | Source: Paralympic- France
As the French capital gears-up to celebrate one year on from the start of the “inclusion revolution” and the spectacular Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, it is clear the event had a transformational impact, in particular in the area of public transport. According to the City of Paris, 350,000 people with a disability visited Paris for the Games, while 185,000 people with a disability each year will benefit from the accessibility improvements to the city that the Games acted as a catalyst for. Before Paris won the right to stage the 2024 Paralympic Games, the city was not particularly accessible for Parisians or visitors and was especially challenging for persons with disabilities…
Embrace diversity, equity and accessibility
August 30, 2025 | Source: Trinidad Express- Trinidad and Tobago
On the 63rd anniversary of our nation’s Independence, the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTBWA) joins the national community in celebrating this important milestone. Independence gave us the freedom to chart our own destiny, but true independence will only be achieved when every citizen—regardless of ability—can participate fully, equally, and with dignity in the life of our nation. As we look to the future, TTBWA is calling upon the Government to enact specific and comprehensive legislation to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, with full compliance to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)…

Neighbours gathered, sweets were shared, and the household brimmed with joy. But six months later, a sudden illness struck. Typhoid came on strong. Though he recovered, the damage to his optic nerves was irreversible. From that point on, Mahantesh G Kivadasannavar would live without sight. The news brought heartbreak. His family didn’t mourn his existence. They mourned the world he would now have to navigate…

Today, she has a busy roster of 60 clients, who also include performers from other demographic groups underrepresented on stage and screen. One client is Kemi Adekoya, who appears in films such as Dreaming Whilst Black…
How video games and adaptive technology are helping people with disability build connections
August 31, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
For Rob Taylor, who lives with motor neuron disease (MND), video games are liberating. I can disappear from reality and become the avatar that doesn’t have a disability,” the 56-year-old said. “It’s very similar to the way that I dream. I don’t dream that I have a disability.” The retired IT professional was diagnosed with the progressive neurological condition after noticing an involuntary and rapid twitch in his arm. “I was at the doctor’s incidentally for renewing a script, and I said, ‘Hey, doc, what do you think of this?’,” he said…
‘Parliament building inaccessible to me,’ MP says
September 1, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Marie Tidball MP says she is joking when she threatens to chain herself to a Parliament door handle. But I am not entirely sure I believe her. Tidball was born with a congenital disability, which affects all four limbs. She has foreshortened arms and legs, with one digit on each hand. When she was a child she missed three years of school because of the critical surgeries she needed. The disability campaigner was elected as Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire last July, and says that while getting into politics is difficult, getting around the Houses of Parliament is hard when you have a disability…
Action needed to make car clubs more accessible for disabled people
September 1, 2025 | Source: Fleetworld- UK
Said to be the first research of its kind, the Keys for All study calls for better support for car clubs from government, through the introduction of new policy and funding streams which would help widen access. Among its recommendations are discounted rates and flexible cancellation policies to encourage take-up, as well as a trial of a range of adaptations to car club vehicles. The report also proposes a major awareness-raising campaign and improvements to car club websites and apps so they are easier to use…
Mother ‘heartbroken’ by park’s poor accessibility
September 1, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
A mum says she is “angry, upset and heartbroken” over the opening of a new play park that does not cater for her daughter’s disabilities, despite it being described as an “accessible space.” Rebecca said there “wasn’t anything” her two-year-old daughter Hannah, who has cerebral palsy and is non-mobile, non-verbal and reliant on a nasal cannula, could use. The new play area at Salisbury River Park, in Wiltshire, opened on 21 August and includes swings, slides, turntables and climbing equipment. Council leader Sam Charleston said that provision had been made for “neuro-divergent children”, although he acknowledged that the provision could “possibly be better”.
Early Alzheimer’s brainwave test detects memory decline years before diagnosis
September 2, 2025 | Source: University of Bath- UK
A simple brainwave test developed at the University of Bath has been shown to detect signs of memory impairment linked to Alzheimer’s disease years before clinical diagnosis is typically possible. Published in the journal Brain Communications the study by academics from the University of Bath and the University of Bristol, reports that Fastball EEG, a three-minute passive test that records electrical activity in the brain while participants view a stream of images, can reliably identify memory problems in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) – a condition that can lead to Alzheimer’s…
Adults with learning disabilities die 20 years early, report finds
September 2, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
People with learning disabilities and autism in England are dying almost 20 years younger than the rest of the population, a long-awaited report has said. The annual mortality review commissioned by NHS England was originally meant to be published last year but faced repeated delays. It found 39% of deaths of people with learning disabilities and autism were classed as avoidable in 2023, almost twice as high as the general population. NHS England said it was rolling out more training for staff and identifying patients with learning disabilities earlier so they can be given more appropriate care…
Celebrate the rise of accessible design – it benefits everyone
September 3, 2025 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Fashion is a vocabulary. Clothing communicates parts of who we are, what we are interested in and how we want to be seen. It reveals choices that we make – but it also exposes lack of choice. I am a disabled woman; I have dwarfism. My disability and stature is obvious and often shapes a first interaction. I’ve learned to love scouring through rails of clothes in high street stores and charity shops, and taking the items for alterations to make sure they fit. I know that if there are patterns or embroidery near the shoulder or ankle of a garment, altering it won’t work….
Lucy Edwards: From viral TikToks to shaping the future of accessible beauty
September 3, 2025 | Source: Beauty Council- UK
Covid-19 saw lots of people take to TikTok to tell their stories, sell their products and shout about things they care about. But, despite the noise, Lucy Edwards cut through. ‘[At that time], TikTok blew up and I was posting three times a day. “Blind Girl Does Her Own Make Up” amassed close to 20 million views. As a result, following a longterm connection with Sam Latif, the head of accessibility at Procter and Gamble, I eventually became the face of Pantene because of my social media presence.’…
People with invisible disabilities fear judgement and online hate when parking in designated spots
September 4, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Jenna Sittler said she fears logging onto social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook after seeing posts of people shaming and judging others for “abusing” accessible parking spaces. “I would have an anxiety attack if that was directed at me,” she said. Jenna Sittler was diagnosed with chronic pain, fatigue and dysphonia in 2013. She said she is often met with “blatant stares” when she parks in an accessible stall, with people assuming she doesn’t need it because she is “too young” or doesn’t “look disabled.”…
