Family says Universal kicked them out over a $16 keychain
January 15, 2026 | Source: USA TODAY
A Florida mom says her family was kicked out of Universal’s Epic Universe theme park after a misunderstanding involving her autistic daughter. Nikki Daou was accused of shoplifting and temporarily banned from Universal property, according to a letter sent by its lawyers. Daou told USA TODAY she’d taken her daughter outside of a crowded shop in an effort to avoid a meltdown in late December. At the time, her then 6-year-old, whom she described as “severely autistic,” was holding onto a keychain they hadn’t yet purchased, but intended to. Daou’s husband, Alain – who is also disabled and uses a wheelchair – removed the item’s tags and stayed behind to pay for it…
Facing Accessibility Critique, State Closes Bus Ticket Sales Outlet’s Door
January 15, 2026 | Source: Patch
All customers — not just those in wheelchairs — now have to wait outside to be helped at the new bus ticket sales outlet on Church Street, as the state works to make the one-step-elevated storefront “accessible for all.” The city’s disability commission, meanwhile, hosted a wide-ranging discussion about how the outlet’s accessibility problems extend beyond its lack of a ramp. State Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesperson Eva Zymaris provided the Independent with that update Tuesday in response to a question about why the front door at 72 Church St. is now locked…
USA TODAY is tracking airline accessibility in 2026

‘You don’t want to be a statistic.’ Flying is failing these passengers
January 14, 2026 | Source: USA Today
Flying can be stressful for everyone, but especially for disabled travelers who face the risk of the mobility devices they depend on being damaged or destroyed by airlines. According to the Department of Transportation, U.S. airlines collectively transported 899,385 wheelchairs and scooters in 2024. Of those, 11,357 (1.26%) were reportedly damaged or destroyed in transit. It’s a very slight improvement over 2023, when 1.38% of the mobility devices airlines transported were mishandled. Those numbers are based solely on consumer complaints, which is why it’s important for disabled travelers to notify airlines and the DOT when something goes wrong…

As Mayor Mamdani Takes Office, Disability Community Seeks Action Beyond Words
January 7, 2026 | Source: AbleNews
New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, pledged to tackle issues such as housing and affordability and promised to serve as the mayor of every New Yorker. Those in the disability community are hopeful he remains true to his words, while some were disappointed the mayor didn’t note the community specifically in his inaugural speech last week, despite mentioning other specific groups. “I did not hear anything about us,” said disability activist Robert Acevedo of the nonprofit, volunteer organization Disabled In Action, who attended Mamdani’s swearing in with his husband. “It’s important that we attend these events and show others that the disabled are present.”…
Overture Center offers tactile tours to make Broadway accessible for visually impaired patrons
January 9, 2026 | Source: Channel 3000
The Overture Center for the Arts has launched tactile tours designed to make Broadway shows accessible to patrons with visual impairments, allowing them to experience theater through touch rather than sight alone. The specialized tours invite guests with varying levels of visual impairment to explore set pieces, props and costumes from current Broadway productions. Participants can touch and examine the intricate details of show elements they would otherwise miss during a traditional theater experience. “What we’re experiencing today is called a tactile tour,” explained an Overture Center representative…

Autistic Barbie Doesn’t Represent Me. She Shouldn’t Have to
January 15, 2026 | Source: Time
With an animated Barbie film in development, following the success of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster movie, Mattel Studios will certainly have a diverse range of characters to bring to life. On Monday, Mattel launches its first autistic Barbie. Coming barely six months after its first doll with type 1 diabetes, this newest addition to Barbie’s Fashionistas range is designed so that more children “see themselves in Barbie” and to encourage all children to play with dolls that reflect the world around them. Autism is a form of neurodivergence that influences how people experience and interact with society…
Wendy’s Wrongfully Terminated Employee With Disability, EEOC Claims
January 12, 2026 | Source: Franchise Times
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that Wendy’s needs to “correct unlawful employment practices” after the company allegedly discriminated against an employee due to his disability and age, according to a lawsuit filed in Ohio. Wendy’s International LLC reportedly denied an employee, who was in his 50s, the right to return to work after he had some surgeries, despite his doctor clearing him to resume working, the lawsuit alleges. The EEOC sued Wendy’s in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio December 29…

The Colorado Governor’s Office of Information Technology on Tuesday announced it’s expanding a pilot project with the Aira American Sign Language app, making the service available in the Colorado State Capitol building for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Visitors to the capitol building — which houses the state’s Senate, House of Representatives, Office of the Governor, Office of the Lieutenant Governor and Department of the Treasury — will each have access to a free, 30-minute Aira ASL on-demand session. The app connects users to a professional ASL interpreter, who can connect to their phone’s camera to assist them in translating…
Walmart settles EEOC charge it illegally revoked a worker’s disability accommodation
January 13, 2026 | Source: HR Dive
Walmart will pay $60,000 to settle U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission allegations that it revoked a worker’s disability accommodations and then fired her for insubordination, according to a Monday news release from EEOC. The worker, a stocker, had since her hiring in 2017 received a reasonable accommodation to perform her tasks according to a routine, which accommodated her cognitive disabilities, EEOC said in a complaint. After a management change in 2020, her tasks were changed daily, and she was fired after she resisted an attempt to redirect her work, EEOC said…

January 14, 2026 | Source: Texas Standard
In 2021, Texas experienced a winter storm that shut down much of the state’s power grid for a week, leaving millions of people without heat and electricity. Hundreds lost their lives. For Texans with disabilities, the storm offered extra challenges, and exposed the limitations of the state’s emergency preparedness system. Angela Frederick’s new book, “Disabled Power: A Storm, a Grid and Embodied Harm in the Age og Disaster“ features interviews with 58 Texans about how disability impacted them during the winter storm, and how their own resilience kept them going…
These artists are on a mission to make photography more accessible
January 15, 2026 | Source: Colorado Public Radio
High school sweethearts Ted and Carrie Tahquechi have chased golden hours across the country. A sunrise over Boulder’s Flatirons. A sunset on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. They’ve shared a love for photography since they studied it together in the 1980s. In the decades since, they’ve undertaken multiple photographic projects, including landscape and portrait series, in color and black and white. But in 1999, Carrie, Ted, and their 3-year-old twin boys were rear-ended in a car accident. Carrie got minor whiplash. The boys, Jarren and Jorden, were uninjured. But the impact shifted Ted’s retinal tissue, permanently damaging his sight…

The new placard design will cut processing time by about 25% by streamlining production, allowing residents to receive placards more quickly. Existing placards will remain valid until their listed expiration dates. According to MassDOT, the updated placard features a modern look that incorporates the widely recognized universal accessibility logo, is made from more durable material embedded with security features, and includes bilingual instructions in English and Spanish…
Dialogue on Disability — After a challenging year for nonprofits, a focus on caregivers
January 15, 2026 | Source: WXXI
2025 was a hard year for American nonprofits: roughly one in three lost some form of funding, and charitable giving wavered, given the uncertain economy. That has created a challenging environment for families of children with disabilities in the Greater Rochester region. In this Dialogue on Disability discussion, we explore what a local nonprofit is doing to sustain and grow — as demand grows for services. We also talk to parents who share personal stories…
‘They’re not perks’: Florida woman with disability files lawsuit against new law allowing pregnant women to use disability parking spots
January 15, 2026 | Source: WSVN
A Florida woman who lives with a disability said a new law that allows pregnant women to apply for temporary disabled parking permits threatens her ability to live independently, according to a lawsuit. “I just feel very strongly that pregnancy is not a disability, I just want to be able to park up front,” said State Rep. Fiona McFarland in 2025. That moment from a State House committee meeting in March helped lay the foundation for a new law that allows expecting mothers to apply for temporary disabled parking permits for a $15 fee. The permits would be valid for one year…
Congress should ban metric that devalues people with disabilities
January 15, 2026 | Source: Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Tony Coelho, Roll Call
Now more than ever, we need to listen to and respect one another’s views and values, whether on the floor of Congress or in individual health care decisions. As former members of Congress on different sides of the aisle, we found common ground. We fiercely believe older adults and people with disabilities should not be devalued, especially in our nation’s health care system. The United States should not embrace health care rationing that de-prioritizes the health and wellness of people living with disabilities, or older adults or even infants. Yet that’s where the current political debate takes us…
Disability rights advocates lay out priorities, call on New York lawmakers to stop ‘stalling’
January 15, 2026 | Source: New York Public News Network
As this year’s session of the New York state Legislature gets underway, people with disabilities and their advocates are hoping for more progress on several policy initiatives. They were there amid of the bustle of opening day – members of New York ADAPT or American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today and Caring Majority — holding a small rally on the concourse of Empire State Plaza. “Our homes, not nursing homes,” they chanted. The group said housing was among their top priorities. “Governor (Kathy) Hochul has made it blatantly clear, since last State of the State, that she was going to be pushing for affordable housing…

France sets the standard, inviting international hoteliers the opportunity to lead on accessibility
January 9, 2026 | Source: Hospitality and Catering News- France
The measures follow a formal government order issued in November 2025, which extended the terms of an industry-wide agreement originally negotiated earlier in the year to all hospitality employers. In practical terms, this means that commitments previously agreed between employer and employee representatives now carry the full force of law. For readers less familiar with the French system, collective agreements play a central role in shaping employment standards. When the French government “extends” an agreement, it applies not only to the organisations involved in negotiations, but to every business operating within that sector…
Concerns raised over election accessibility for disabled voters in Thailand
January 11, 2026 | Source: Thaiger- Thailand
Local disability organisations have raised concerns that the upcoming general election may not provide an equal voting experience for people with disabilities. They cite issues such as inadequate access to policy information, insufficient voting aids, and potential confusion over the proposed use of colour-coded ballot papers. Representatives highlighted the added challenge posed by the February 8 elections coinciding with a referendum on constitutional amendments. This could lead to misunderstandings and compromise the privacy and independence of disabled voters, according to Thai PBS online…
New London Underground marketing criticised over accessibility concerns
January 12, 2026 | Source: Independent- UK and The Grocer and The Drinks Business
Passengers have criticised temporary Heineken marketing on the London Underground due to accessibility concerns. Signage on the Bakerloo line has been temporarily rebranded, with station names such as Waterloo altered to “Waterl0.0” and Oxford Circus to “Oxf0.0rd Circus” as part of an advertising campaign to promote Heineken’s non-alcoholic beers. The name of the line itself has been rewritten as “Bakerl0.0” on some signage. Some have criticised the move for potentially causing confusion for those travelling on the network…

January 12, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A seven-year-old boy can now play at his local park after his mum campaigned to have accessible equipment installed. Rupert, who was born with a severe mental disability and uses a wheelchair, was unable to join his brothers to play at Hay Fields estate playground in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire. In 2024, his mother Mollie called on local authorities to install inclusive play equipment. In October last year the park was kitted out for children with disabilities, and Mollie said Rupert, whose condition is still under investigation, “absolutely loved it”…
Kakao Games’ Accessibility Push Shows How Play Can Restore Agency After Disability
January 13, 2026 | Source: Korea Bizwire- South Korea
After an accident left him paralyzed, an avid gamer known by the nickname “iick” spent nearly a decade in what he described as the darkest period of his life. What helped pull him back, he told an audience this month, was not therapy or medicine, but the rediscovery of play—made possible by assistive gaming technology. Speaking on Jan. 8 at Kakao’s AI campus in Yongin, south of Seoul, he recounted how customized gaming devices restored his confidence and sense of purpose, eventually leading him to compete in tournaments for players with disabilities…
The academic study of politics is failing disabled people – with real-world consequences
January 13, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- UK
Diversity among students and researchers is a common goal across academia. This has been driven by a desire to increase opportunities for the historically marginalised in higher education – moving away from the straight, white and male personification of academia. It also comes from a recognition that diversity brings innovation. It enhances the quality of research and teaching. It improves how higher education institutions engage with a diverse student body. Increased representation has affected how academia operates…
Rejection of lawsuit over accessible public transit ‘hurts — a lot,’ advocate says
January 14, 2026 | Source: Montreal Gazette- Canada
A class action lawsuit over accessibility issues across Montreal’s public transit network has been rejected in Quebec Superior Court. The lawsuit, filed by the Regroupement des activistes pour l’inclusion au Québec (RAPLIQ) against various transit agencies and the City of Montreal, accused the network of being inaccessible for people with disabilities who require wheelchairs or walkers, or canes for the visually impaired, mainly over the lack of elevators in many métro stations. It was authorized to move forward in 2017…

January 14, 2026 | Source: Inquirer- Philippines

Supreme Court Bats For Including Disability Rights In Corporate Social Responsibility
January 14, 2026 | Source: Live Law- India
The Supreme Court has said that the rights of persons with disabilities have to be viewed through the prism of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to protect the human rights of individuals belonging to such groups. It is through this that true equality at the workplace can be achieved. These observations were made by a bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice KV Viswanathan while hearing the case of an appellant who was denied the right to employment by Coal India Limited (CIL) just because she suffered from multiple disabilities…
‘Accessibility is not a luxury’ – Momentum endorses ombudsman on pavements
January 15, 2026 | Source: Times of Malta- Malta
Momentum has welcomed and endorsed a recent position paper by the office of ombudsman calling on the government to take immediate action to address the growing obstruction of public pavements, primarily by catering establishments. In the paper, the ombudsman’s office criticised the “unchecked spread of tables, chairs, and related furniture in public areas,” calling it a serious and ongoing infringement on the rights of older persons, persons with disabilities, and families with young children. In a statement, Momentum’s Katy Compagno said that while laws related to public access already existed, transparency and political will to enforce the law were lacking…
Campaigners hit back at claims disabled drivers choose ‘luxury’ Motability cars
January 15, 2026 | Source: Female First- UK
The backlash comes after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in last month’s Budget that the Treasury will start charging VAT on most Motability advance payments and remove the scheme’s insurance tax exemption, raising costs for many disabled drivers. Her announcement followed headlines claiming that Motability customers were choosing “luxury” cars such as BMWs and Mercedes. But campaigners say this framing is misleading, explaining that these vehicles make up only a minority of Motability leases and are often selected because of accessibility needs rather than luxury…
