Brooklyn, Queens apartment developers broke disability access laws when building, suit claims
March 31, 2026 | Source: AMNY and New York Daily News
A group of developers, designers, property owners and architects were hit with a federal suit alleging they neglected to follow multiple disability access laws when constructing three properties in Brooklyn and Queens.“How buildings are designed impacts people’s lives every day,” said Diane Houk, an attorney representing Fair Housing Justice Center, the nonprofit bringing the suit in the Eastern District of New York. “If every day you’re living in a space where you can’t [use your home], that gnaws away at you.” The Fair Housing Justice Center alleges a group of six developers — all managed by the Rabsky Group — and three architects and interior designers — New York Building Associates, Whitefield Architects and Durukan Designs — flouted provisions in the Fair Housing Act…
EEOC Hits Logistic Firm DHL Supply Chain with a Disability Discrimination Lawsuit
April 2, 2026 | Source: The HR Digest
DHL Supply Chain has been slapped with a disability discrimination lawsuit by the EEOC after an alleged violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act came to light. Exel Inc., operating as DHL Supply Chain, reportedly failed to accommodate a temporary worker with sickle cell disease, opting to retaliate against her instead. The logistics company’s ADA violation case is particularly noteworthy due to the simplistic accommodations that could have been made for the concerned worker, however, she was instead told, “We do not accommodate restrictions.” This alleged refusal to make workplace accommodation presents us with another case study on employee management and how an employer’s reluctance to support workers can hurt the business and its reputation in the long run.
Equal access, but to less information: Kane County may reduce online board materials, to meet federal rule
April 2, 2026 | Source: Daily Herald
With a deadline looming to upgrade the county’s website to comply with a federal rule governing accessibility to people with disabilities, Kane County Board members are considering whether to stop posting some meeting documents online. Because if the county can’t guarantee equal access for everyone, it should not make the materials available online to anyone to avoid being accused of discrimination, officials have said. “This is not the county’s choice to do this,” Kane County Board Chairman Corinne Pierog said. The board is expected to vote April 14 on a resolution that only ADA-compliant board and committee materials, such as agendas, resolutions and ordinances, will be posted on the website…

The Unfinished Legacy of the Americans with Disabilities Act
March 27, 2026 | Source: MIR
For many disabled Americans, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 was a landmark piece of legislation that broke barriers for thousands of US citizens. The act led to increased accessibility in public spaces, proper recognition of the intrinsic rights of disabled people, and set a precedent for future legislative change. It was curated after a decades-long struggle for legally protected civil rights by disability activists and an even longer period of stigma surrounding disabilities that followed many Americans through all avenues of life. In spite of the objective influence brought forth by the legislation, current executive choices introduced by the Trump administration put disabled people’s autonomy and ability for a relatively ‘normal’ life at risk…
Texas city brings in robot to ensure its sidewalks are accessible
March 27, 2026 | Source: Spectrum
Burleson is the first city in Texas to bring in a robot called the Daxbot to scan the sidewalks, making sure they’re accessible for all. The city said the goal is to make sure when you’re getting around town, you won’t run into any obstacles. “Pretty impressive, all the data that they’re constantly collecting as they move along,” said Errick Thompson, director of public works in Burleson, located 16 miles south of Fort Worth. The robot is used to stroll the streets and sidewalks in Burleson, covering more than 200 miles. It measures every inch to make sure you can move safely through the city…
TSA lines are breaking records. How to make it less stressful with kids, elderly or a disability
March 28, 2026 | Source: USA TODAY
Waiting in what officials are calling the “highest wait times in TSA history” amid the partial government shutdown is a headache for many travelers. For others, it’s much more challenging. Lawmakers failed to reach a deal that would fund the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Transportation Security Administration, on March 27, prompting President Trump to sign an order rerouting federal funds to pay airport security workers. Unlike past shutdowns, TSA officers could receive payment as quickly as March 30. Since the shutdown began in mid-February, TSA officers have been working without pay, surpassing over $1 billion in missed paychecks…
Nonprofit founder brings accessible birding to Texas Mid-Coast Birding Festival
March 30, 2026 | Source: Crossroads Today
A nonprofit dedicated to making birding accessible to everyone is bringing specialized programming to the Texas Mid-Coast Birding Festival, offering people with mobility challenges the opportunity to enjoy nature without barriers. Virginia Rose, founder of Birdability, will lead accessible birding walks during the festival scheduled for April 10-12. The organization has spent months preparing to ensure festival locations accommodate people who use wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and other mobility devices. Rose and her team have conducted extensive scouting of birding sites to identify the most accessible locations…
Children with visual impairment join accessible Easter egg hunt in Whitehouse, TX
March 31, 2026 | Source: CBS
For most children, Easter is about bright colors and candy. But for some kids, the holiday is experienced in a different way. Its experienced through sound. Beeping eggs guided visually impaired children across a church lawn in Whitehouse, helping them take part in a tradition often centered on sight. For Marcos Barroso, watching his daughters participate is a moment he doesn’t take for granted. “Today, we’re here to celebrate all the kids with albinism and impairment that can’t see visuals,” Barroso said. “They do Easter hunting every year, and they let the parents come and join them with all the activities they have going on.”…
Woman visiting Myrtle Beach for cheer competition celebrates beach accessibility program
March 31, 2026 | Source: WMBF News
A West Virginia woman visiting Myrtle Beach for a cheerleading competition says local accessibility programs helped her have her first beach day in more than a decade. Ashley Cronin came to Myrtle Beach for a cheerleading competition and stayed longer for vacation, telling WMBF that she’s always wanted to visit the Grand Strand. It’d been more than a decade since Cronin’s last big beach trip because she lost her ability to walk after having a stroke in 2015. Now, she cheers, travels, and navigates the world in a wheelchair. Cronin joined her cheer team after she learned everyone on the team had a disability…
In the Wake of the 2025 Font Wars, Accessibility Is Still an Afterthought
March 31, 2026 | Source: PRINT Magazine
On March 2, 2026, the General Services Administration released its third annual assessment of federal compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, offering a sobering snapshot of the government’s digital accessibility landscape. While the report points to incremental gains in acquisition and procurement practices, it ultimately underscores a more troubling reality: the federal government is still falling short of its legal obligation to ensure equitable, usable access to digital tools and information—for people with disabilities, certainly, but also for the broader public that depends on clear, functional, and inclusive systems to navigate civic life…
The Paralympic Village Was Proof That Truly Accessible Cities Can and Should Exist
March 31, 2026 | Source: Teen Vogue
Arriving at the Paralympic Village in Milan felt like a sigh of relief. I had spent a week in the city prior to the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, speeding across town, checking out venues in advance, planning which athletes I would interview, and eating a lot of gelato. As a wheelchair user, my week was also spent navigating unfamiliar surfaces and bumpy cobblestone streets that had me awkwardly smiling at strangers as my body bounced up and down. When I got to the village, with its long, smooth ramps, I exhaled. And what awaited me inside was so much bigger than my ramp-shaped heart could have ever imagined…
Accessibility gaps leave wheelchair users struggling in St. John’s
March 31, 2026 | Source: SaltWire- Canada
Since a fall on a film set in July 2025 left him paralyzed from the waist down, Andrew Strickland — known publicly as Dicky Strangler — has been adjusting to life as a wheelchair user, a transition that has brought new daily considerations when moving through public spaces. “It’s an ongoing issue,” Strickland said. “When we have snow, and then you go downtown to try and park somewhere, accessible spaces just aren’t cleared at all.” Everyday tasks now require a level of planning and uncertainty that did not exist before. “The city needs to do better — and not just accessible parking spaces, but accessibility all over the city in general,” he said…
Duckworth, Sullivan Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Improve State Department Accessibility Standards
April 1, 2026 | Source: U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Bill Text and RiverBender
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK) introduced new bipartisan legislation to ensure all of the U.S. Department of State’s foreign Embassies, Consulates and Chief of Mission Residences meet federal accessibility guidelines. The bipartisan Inspector General Accessibility Reporting Act would create a regular opportunity for oversight and improve visibility into structural barriers that limit accessibility by adding to regularly scheduled inspections, helping the U.S. government better identify and address these issues.
New Illinois bill aims to address ‘asset trap’ for residents with disabilities
April 1, 2026 | Source: IPM News
For Paula Vanier, a computer is essential for much of her written communication. Because of her cerebral palsy, typing is often easier than writing by hand. But like many people with disabilities, the tools she depends on are not cheap, and saving for them can be tricky. In Illinois, asset limits tied to public benefits can make even modest savings risky. Single people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and some disability-related Medicaid programs must have a savings of about $2,000 or under to remain eligible for benefits. Vanier, a coordinator for personal assistants and support workers at the Persons Assuming Control of their Environment (PACE) Center for Independent Living in Urbana, also relies on Medicaid and said those limits can shape major financial decisions…
Trump says it’s ‘not possible’ for the U.S. to pay for Medicaid, Medicare and day care: ‘We’re fighting wars’
April 4, 2026 | Source: NBC
President Donald Trump on Wednesday said it’s “not possible” for the federal government to fund Medicare, Medicaid and child care costs, arguing that it should be up to the states to “take care” of those programs while the federal government focuses on military spending. The president’s remarks were delivered to attendees at a private Easter luncheon at the White House, where Trump also accused Democratic-led states of fraud. He went on to say that he told Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought: “Don’t send any money for day care, because the United States can’t take care of day care…

Calgary at two million begins with one, designed for all
March 27, 2026 | Source: Calgary Herald- Canada
Two million begins with one. One person stepping onto a street that feels safe, one neighbour catching a bus that arrives on time, one student wheeling into a classroom. Calgary isn’t just growing in numbers; we are growing in who we choose to include. If we design for one, we must design for all. Calgarians have told me stories about how small, preventable gaps in our systems cascade into life-altering crises. Stories of medication errors by well-meaning care staff triggering a mental-health episode. Stories where first responders arrive with goodwill but lack training to safely support someone in psychiatric distress who uses a wheelchair…
Councils call for clearer EV charging rules as accessibility lags
March 27, 2026 | Source: AirQualityNews- UK
Local authorities are urging central government for clearer guidance and faster action to ensure the UK’s expanding public EV charging network is accessible to all drivers, as new research reveals many councils are struggling to deliver inclusive infrastructure in congested urban spaces. According to a report by EV charge point operator Believ, more than half (53%) of councils say balancing the need for accessible charge points with local space constraints is problematic. Narrow streets, limited footway width and competing resident demands are making it difficult to deliver charging that works for everyone…

Bringing accessibility to life: how industry collaboration delivered a UK-first for inclusive payments
March 27, 2026 | Source: UK Finance
UK Finance has today launched its Accessible Cards Code of Practice, designed to help customers with accessibility needs or impaired vision use payment cards in store and online. We believe the Code means the UK is the first country in the world to have national common accessibility guidelines for flat printed payment cards. The new guidelines cover physical texture and design, colour contrast standards, and legibility of words and numbers. The Code has been developed in collaboration with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), British Dyslexia Association and other accessibility experts, consumer advocates, and the payments industry including Mastercard, Visa, and Idemia…
Transport Committee Chair leads accessibility debate
March 27, 2026 | Source: Committees- UK Parliament and Politics Home- UK and New Civil Engineer- UK
Ruth Cadbury MP, chair of Parliament’s Transport Committee, has used a Commons debate to call for further action to improve transport for disabled people and to lay down three questions for the Minister. The debate on transport accessibility on 26 March was secured by the Committee and addressed progress on the recommendations in its Access Denied report published in March 2025. Opening the debate, the Chair welcomed “several important steps” taken in the year since the report’s publication but called on the Government do more to improve the daily experience of disabled travellers…
Write-in ballots for Montreal-area byelection hurt accessibility: disability advocacy group
March 27, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
An advocacy group for people with disabilities is challenging Elections Canada’s changes to the ballot in the upcoming byelection in Terrebonne, Que. Regroupement des activistes pour l’inclusion au Québec (RAPLIQ) says the decision to use ballots that require the voter to write in the candidate’s name themselves constitutes a violation of the fundamental principle of universal accessibility. “While this measure may address certain administrative constraints, it nonetheless results in concrete and worrying consequences for many citizens, particularly people with disabilities,” wrote general manager Steven Laperrière in a letter to Elections Canada…
Councillor fights guide dog access refusals
March 29, 2026 | Source: BBC- UK
A north London councillor has described a “stark reminder” of everyday barriers faced by disabled people after repeatedly being refused entry to businesses with her guide dog. She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service these refusals remain an “indignity” despite the Equality Act 2010. Hanna Matin, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Alperton, qualified for her guide dog Wendy in 2021 after living with retinoblastoma, and since her 2022 election she has prioritised raising awareness among local businesses. Her work, supported by Guide Dogs UK, has led Brent Council to target firms that deny access to assistance dogs…
A 12-month wait and a $1400 bill: ADHD diagnosis in Australia
March 30, 2026 | Source: University of Wollongong Australia
In February 2026, the NSW and Victorian governments both announced reforms to allow trained general practitioners (GPs) to diagnose and treat ADHD, joining other states attempting to reduce barriers to ADHD assessment and support. These reforms arrive amid ongoing public debate about ADHD – why diagnoses appear to be rising, whether the condition is being overdiagnosed, and whether stimulant medications are being misused. That same month, University of Wollongong (UOW) PhD candidate Clare O’Toole in the School of Psychology published her first two peer-reviewed studies, examining the accessibility of ADHD assessment in Australia, and psychologists’ assessment practices…
Inclusivity is More Than Physical Accessibility – Minister Charles Jr
March 31, 2026 | Source: Jamaica Information Service- Jamaica
Jamaica is actively prioritising inclusivity within public-sector agencies, moving beyond mere physical accessibility, such as ramps and elevators, to comprehensive, people-centred approaches. “We have to challenge each other to now move beyond the visible markers of accessibility to confronting the deeper truth, which is that inclusion is not merely about the concrete or the walls, or the equipment; it is about our attitude, the systems, and accountabilities,” said Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. “It is about how you approach these matters in your daily lives and in your service,” he added…
Canada Post is planning to end home delivery. Here’s how community mailboxes will work
April 1, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
If your dog goes crazy every time the mail delivery person shows up at your door, you may be relieved to know that it soon may no longer be a problem. But beyond that, a lot of people are uncertain what the pending demise of door-to-door mail delivery means for them. Canada Post said on Monday that it’s moving ahead with a transformation plan that includes a transition to community mailboxes, eventually ending home delivery. It’s something Public Services and Procurement Canada directed last year — as it faces what’s been called an “existential” crisis and faltering finances…
Accessibility Recognised as a Strategic Priority at The Mediterranean aha Forum
April 1, 2026 | Source: Hospitality and Catering News- Malta
Former President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca delivered a direct message to leaders attending The Mediterranean aha Forum, in Partnership with VisitMalta Incentives and Meetings, setting the tone for a conversation that reached far beyond the room. Speaking in Malta, at what she described as a significant first for the country, she positioned the gathering not simply as an industry event, but as a moment of strategic relevance within global tourism. “Firstly, the fact that this is a very first for Malta, bringing accessibility hospitality allies in Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean, in an area where one third of global tourism actually visit, is an extremely important statement,” she said…
Next week’s disability cuts will make people destitute – and you might not understand how bad they are until it’s too late
April 2, 2026 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Look at the front pages or open a news app in the coming days and you’ll supposedly see the big events facing Britain. But here’s one that is likely to slip quietly under the radar: from next week, almost three-quarters of a million of the most severely ill and disabled people in the country could end up having a lifeline benefit cut in half. Cast your mind back to last summer. As the nation sweated through a heatwave and Oasis reunited, ministers were trying to push through “welfare reform” – a nice euphemism for £5bn worth of cuts to disability benefits. A backbench rebellion meant that Keir Starmer was forced to halt his overhaul of personal independence payments (Pip), but MPs voted through a brutal universal credit cut…
Accessible Service in Practice: What Mobile Ordering and Pay-at-Table Can Improve
April 2, 2026 | Source: Toast- UK
Accessibility in restaurants is often discussed in terms of ramps, door widths, and physical layout. These elements matter, but the reality of accessible service reaches much further than physical access alone. For many guests, the most meaningful parts of accessibility are found in the rhythm of the experience itself. It appears in how easily a menu can be understood, how comfortable someone feels asking for adjustments, how quickly they can pay when they are ready to leave, and whether the entire visit unfolds without friction or uncertainty. Across the UK hospitality sector, many operators are beginning to view accessibility through this wider operational lens…
While the UK is making voting more accessible, the US is cracking down
April 2, 2026 | Source: Electoral Reform Society- UK
Currently, the UK is reassessing our restrictive voter ID laws. The Representation of the People Bill, if passed, would see an expansion of the types of accepted voter ID – making voting more accessible. Whilst one side of the ‘special relationship’ looks to make their voter ID requirements more accessible, the other could be restricting them. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act – the ‘SAVE America’ Act – is awaiting a date in the Senate and reassesses the US’s relationship with voter ID. The President has argued the Bill is a way to safeguard American elections, while opponents are fighting it to… safeguard American elections…
