For disabled fliers, hope took wing. Then Trump returned to office
March 15, 2026 | Source: Los Angeles Times
Seth McBride’s life was forever changed on a snowy mountainside in British Columbia. McBride was — and is — a thrill-seeker. Growing up in Juneau, Ala., with the untamed outdoors as his stomping ground, he loved to rock climb, mountain bike and, especially, strap on his skis and fly, soaring headlong off heart-pounding cliffs, crags and cornices. A few months before his senior year in high school, McBride was at a terrain park at Whistler Blackcomb resort. He was 17. He launched a maneuver he’d completed many times before, a back flip off a steep jump…

Disability groups sue Worcester, alleging ADA violations in 911 responses
March 16, 2026 | Source: GBH
In a first of its kind for Massachusetts, several disability organizations sued the city of Worcester today, alleging discrimination in how it handles 911 calls. In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court on Monday, three organizations that work with children and adults with mental disabilities said that when someone calls 911 in Worcester for a mental health crisis — such as suicidal ideation or PTSD episodes — armed officers are the first responders. That’s a marked difference from reports of a physical health problem — heart attack, stroke or chest pain — to which the city sends EMTs and health professionals…
Accessibility study prompts $16.5M in Pa. Capitol projects; disability advocates await answers
March 16, 2026 | Source: Lancaster Online and The Progress News and Fox43
Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration plans to move ahead with two multimillion-dollar projects to make it easier for disabled persons with mobility issues to access the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg. But the projects won’t address a longer list of needed fixes listed in a recent study assessing the Capitol’s accessibility challenges. The Department of General Services released the 158-page study to the public Monday. It evaluates access to the 45-acre Capitol Complex — including outdoor routes, entrances, restrooms, elevators, signage and indoor paths — and proposes dozens of construction projects to improve accessibility in response to an executive order signed by Shapiro in May 2024…

Advocating for accessibility in music producing, Calera woman aims to turn hobby into career
March 16, 2026 | Source: CBS42
A young woman in Calera is breaking through barriers, and showing people that music sees no limits. For years, Rachel Hyche’s eyesight has gotten progressively worse, to the point of being almost completely blind now. But that has not stopped her from becoming a successful music producer and songwriter. At twelve years old, Hyche produced her first song. Now, nine years later, she’s beginning to look at music producing and songwriting as more than just a hobby. “I remember the first couple songs I wrote were terrible, but then I started writing more and getting into that and I have released a couple of albums now…

Lorena Bradford set out to be a speech-language pathologist, but she fell in love with art history, going on to earn a PhD in 17th-century Dutch and Flemish print-making. It would not be until 2010, however — two years after she started working as an educator at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC — that she learned about arts accessibility, when she attended her first Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Conference. At the time, she was “confronting my own assumption that speaking equals engagement,” Bradford said over Zoom in January…
How accessible is local government across San Diego? We graded the agencies
March 17, 2026 Source: inewsource
Most cities in San Diego County have some catching up to do in order to comply with a new state law that aims to increase government accessibility. A review by inewsource and its Documenters program found just four cities — San Diego, National City, Vista and La Mesa — and the county Board of Supervisors allow residents to participate in live public comment during their meetings. That means nearly three-fourths of cities in the region have less than four months to comply with new legislation that requires them to provide an option for people to make public comments through the phone or digital tools…
Ohio bill aims to improve enforcement of accessible parking violations
March 17, 2026 | Source: NBC4 WCMH-TV
A recently introduced Ohio bill aims to enhance the enforcement of accessible parking violations and ensure the spaces are available to those who need them. On Feb. 24, Rep. Meredith Craig (R-Smithville) introduced House Bill 712, which would increase the maximum penalty for improperly using an accessible parking space, expand what counts as a violation and make it easier for law enforcement to issue fines. “For individuals living with mobility limitations, accessible parking is not a convenience,” Craig said at the bill’s first hearing on March 3…

How KultureCity Is Reshaping Accessibility in Live Entertainment
March 17, 2026 | Source: MusicRow
Over the past decade, conversations around live events have increasingly centered on safety, access and experience. In arenas and amphitheaters across the country, artists and venues are thinking more intentionally about how fans move through a space, how they interact with staff and how they feel once the lights go down. For a growing number of industry leaders, that conversation now includes sensory inclusion. Founded in 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama, KultureCity has become a global force in sensory accessibility, working with more than 7,000 venues and events across 40 countries…
WV Dis(EN)abled launches programs to bring attention to accessibility gaps
March 18, 2026 | Source: WVNS
For those living with disabilities, simple tasks like crossing the street can present daily challenges. Members of local non-profit, WV Dis(EN)abled, are working to bring attention to these accessibility issues. From sidewalks with no curb cuts to facilities with no ramps, accessibility gaps often go unnoticed by people living disability-free lives. Veteran and local resident Curtis Yearego has called attention to these oversights. He said most people don’t consider the issue until they are faced with it themselves…
Governments’ website accessibility deadline is fast approaching
March 18, 2026 | Source: Route Fifty
In just over a month’s time, governments with populations of 50,000 people or more must have their websites be accessible and comply with a section of federal disability law. By April 30, government agencies must be in compliance with a new rule issued in 2024 under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act that says websites must comply with various internationally recognized standards from the World Wide Web Consortium. The rule was introduced during former President Joe Biden’s administration and has not since been repealed or tweaked by President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice…

March 18, 2026 | Source: KENS 5
A Southside ISD high school student who uses a wheelchair is struggling to access her classes due to a malfunctioning elevator, raising concerns about accessibility, safety and communication within the district. Her grandfather, Jose Lopez, says the issue has persisted for years and is now affecting his granddaughter’s education — and potentially others who rely on the elevator. “They think we’re gonna allow it to happen. I can’t. There’s just no way. That’s what I’m here for. I’m a granddad,” Lopez said…
Trump suggests Newsom can’t be president because of his learning disability
March 18, 2026 | Source: KTLA
President Donald Trump, once again, took aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, suggesting that his Democratic rival cannot be president due to his learning disability. Newsom has been open about his struggle with dyslexia, which is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a “learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters.” “We have a low-IQ person, you know, because Gavin Newscum has admitted that he is a, that he has learning disabilities,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Monday…
Lancaster barber brings his shop to the sidewalk for wheelchair user
March 18, 2026 | Source: WGAL
Matthew Witmer, who uses a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy and a leg injury, found a solution to accessibility challenges at Sparo Barbershop on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster when Barber Chino brought his services to the sidewalk. Chino, who has been cutting hair at the shop for the past year, said, “I see between 4 to 5 people per day.” He added, “I kind of just try to help out anybody who walks through that door.” Not everyone can simply walk into the building. There is only one entrance to the barbershop, and it’s a set of stairs…

‘Not a disability:’ Florida’s pregnancy parking placard law stays in effect as backlash grows
March 19, 2026 | Source: WKMG
A controversial Florida law allowing pregnant women to obtain disability parking permits will remain in place — at least for now — despite growing backlash and ongoing legal challenges. The law, passed last year, allows expectant mothers to receive temporary disabled parking placards for up to a year. Supporters argue it provides relief for women navigating pregnancy in Florida’s heat, while critics say it further limits already scarce accessible parking spaces. For families who rely on those spots, the impact is personal…
A Dire Need for Accessible Housing
March 19, 2026 | Source: The Progressive
Everyone complains about how hard it is to find decent, affordable housing. But imagine how much more frustrating and futile that search would feel if you had to find decent housing that was not just affordable, but also accessible. A recent report to Congress from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) notes that people with disabilities may have “additional difficulties in finding suitable housing at a reasonable cost because of a lack of accessible housing.” It notes that “features that are luxury amenities for some households, such as elevators, may be necessities for people with disabilities.”…

FIJ Tested 4 Govt Disability Agency Websites for PWD Accessibility. We Found Barriers
March 13, 2026 | Source: Foundation For Investigative Journalism- Nigeria
Nigeria’s Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 guarantees equal access to services for people living with disabilities. This promise extends to digital services run by the government. The law, together with guidelines issued by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and global accessibility standards, requires government websites to be usable for people who rely on assistive technologies such as screen readers. But how accessible are the websites run by state agencies that exist specifically to serve persons with disabilities?…
Give to Gain: Why Digital Inclusion for Women Must Centre Accessibility and Lived Experience
March 13, 2026 | Source: Business Ghana
A few years ago, as a young woman with wild hopes and dreams, when I began losing my sight, I feared that my world would become smaller. Simple things like reading a document, sending an email, and completing a school assignment suddenly felt daunting and uncertain. During that phase of my life, I wondered whether I would still be able to continue my education, pursue my goals, or live independently. Then I discovered assistive technology. Today, using screen readers like Job Access With Speech (JAWS) on my computer and VoiceOver on my iPhone, I can read documents, write reports, attend meetings, order rides, and chat and connect with people across the world on WhatsApp, and connect on social media…

Accessibility, healthcare top priorities for disabled ahead of Budget
March 14, 2026 | Source: Barbados Today
With the national Budget set for Monday, the disabled community has urged the government to implement measures that enhance accessibility, promote inclusion, and expand support for people with disabilities. The community has long advocated for improvements in treatment and supportive policies. While the passing of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2025 marked a major breakthrough, advocates say there is still much more to be done — the first step being enforcement. Barbados TODAY spoke to several representatives at a Health Fair hosted by the Social Empowerment Agency on Wednesday…
‘First ever’ survey on public transport accessibility for deaf people launched by RNID
March 16, 2026 | Source: Liam O’Dell- UK
The Royal National Institute for Deaf people (RNID) is calling on deaf people in the UK to complete what it says is the “first ever” survey on the accessibility of public transport for deaf people and those with hearing loss. The survey’s launch is the latest development in a research project funded by the Motability Foundation, which looks to “understand the barriers faced” by deaf travellers on public transport and use its findings to produce a report with recommendations. The 18-month project, announced in April, also involves a dedicated advisory board comprising people with lived experience to guide the research…
Thousands of Dutch polling stations fail accessibility standards
March 16, 2026 | Source: NL Times- Netherlands
Nearly 10,000 polling stations across the Netherlands are legally required to be accessible for people with physical disabilities, but many fail to meet that standard, advocacy groups warn. Data from waarismijnstemlokaal.nl show that when filtering for accessibility, about 800 polling locations are excluded, leaving fewer than 9,200 that claim to be accessible. Further filtering for audio-assisted voting reduces the number to 172. Support for visually impaired voters does not fall under the legal accessibility criterion, which focuses mainly on physical access.
Cornwall grocery store makes shopping more inclusive with new accessible cart
March 17, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Jessica Hay says her daughter Charlie loves to be included in everything — and a new accessible shopping cart at her local grocery store in Cornwall makes it possible for Charlie to come along for the ride. For Charlie, who has a genetic condition that causes global developmental delays, gross motor skills like walking, balancing and coordination are more challenging. Good’s Independent in Cornwall recently added a shopping cart known as “Caroline’s Cart.” It has a full body seat that can fit people of all ages, and it helps people like Charlie participate in daily activities like grocery shopping…

March 17, 2026 | Source: Barbados Today- Barbados
Government’s move to improve accessibility in Bridgetown is being seen as a long-awaited step forward, but the Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) is urging that persons with disabilities be actively involved in shaping how the project is delivered. Disability advocates, NDP call on province to boost accessibility standards in Alberta
March 17, 2026 | Source: Global News- Canada
Disability advocates and Alberta’s Opposition NDP is calling on Premier Danielle Smith’s government to up its game when it comes to accessibility, saying it’s about dignity. Alberta is one of just two provinces to not have overarching accessibility legislation and standards, which critics say continues to be a blemish on the province. The NDP is trying to fix that through a private member’s bill, which aims to have the government form a committee to create standards for most aspects of daily life, including public transit, employment accommodations and access to services like health care…
Using lived experience to address the digital accessibility gap
March 18, 2026 | Source: Silicon Republic- Ireland
The Disrupt Disability Arts Festival was well underway by the time I reached Projects Arts Centre in Temple Bar. A sunny evening had added to the day’s apparent success, with many milling about the building as a sold-out 5pm theatre performance on life as a non-speaker begins. In the busy foyer, a volunteer from the centre approaches me with a box of surgical masks, asking if I need one. I catch a small table with snacks and Palestine cola from the corner of my eye. I’m here to meet Patrick Fitzgerald: a coach, not a teacher. He is persistent about that distinction…
When Comicon and other fan conventions focus on accessibility, everyone wins
March 18, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
Growing up, I was a huge fan of the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s a fantasy adventure set in a world at war that’s filled with characters who have elemental super powers. My favourite character was Toph Beifong, a telekinetic “earth bender” who, like me, is blind. Watching an independent, sassy superhero was really empowering. Even today, there are not a lot of characters with disabilities portrayed on screen. It was refreshing to see how Toph’s blindness was her super power, not her downfall…

March 19, 2026 | Source: Taproot Edmonton- Canada
Accessibility on transit is improving for Edmontonians who are blind and partially sighted, but there’s still work to be done, says an advocate with CNIB. “If you are blind or low-vision, you don’t get to drive,” said Taylor Bauer, the program lead for awareness and community outreach in CNIB’s Edmonton office. “We rely on transportation to live normal lives because we live normal lives.” CNIB’s Get on Board campaign, an advocacy program for transit accessibility across the country, has been active in Edmonton since 2023, gathering insights from the community and conveying information to ETS about barriers…
Proposed accessibility bill would catch Alberta up to most provinces
March 18, 2026 | Source: Medicine Hat News- Canada
St. Albert NDP MLA Marie Renaud put forward a bill this week that would implement a province-wide accessibility framework. Alberta is one of only two provinces without accessibility legislation, alongside Prince Edward Island. Saskatchewan and New Brunswick adopted accessibility legislation in 2023. “In plain language, if this bill is passed, it will enable the creation of a plan for government to work beside experts to develop accessibility standards that will identify, remove and prevent barriers for disabled people,” Renaud told the legislature Monday.”

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
