Disability advocates frustrated after online accessibility deadline extended for state, local governments
May 1, 2026 | Source: WFIU Public Radio
Misty Kienzynski was born with leber congenital amaurosis, causing the cells in her eyes to degenerate over time. She uses on a screen reader, a common tool used by people with vision problems. It reads information at a rapid pace, allowing her to quickly parse through digital texts. Like many other Americans with disabilities, she thought by now she would be able to fully access local and state government websites. But Kienzynski will have to wait at least another year, after the U.S. Department of Justice extended the deadline for compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act…

New Missouri law protects against ‘abusive’ web-accessibility lawsuits
May 7, 2026 | Source: StateScoop and KMBC
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe on Wednesday signed a bill into law that will protect state and local government agencies, along with residents and private businesses, from “abusive” lawsuits that allege website or web-content accessibility violations. The Act Against Abusive Website or Web Content Access Litigation provides a number of entities the legal grounds to protect themselves against suits over alleged website accessibility issues, such as claims related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the landmark civil rights law that two years ago the Justice Department extended to apply to the mobile applications, websites and other digital properties of state and local governments…

New Mexico is a national leader in advancing disability rights
May 3, 2026 | Source: Albuquerque Journal
In 2023, New Mexico unanimously passed House Bill 131, becoming the first state in the country to mandate private insurers cover prosthetics and orthotics. Since then, 11 other states have filed similar laws. In a win for the disabled community of New Mexico, the governor recently signed into law my bill, House Bill 38, which amended the 2023 law to include complex rehabilitation technology devices. These allow people with disabilities to access physical activities and sports, helping to maintain physical health; they also can aid with medically necessary mobility and positioning needs…
Indiana withdraws from lawsuit challenging federal disability protections
May 4, 2026 | Source: Indiana Capital Chronicle
Indiana’s attorney general has pulled out of a Republican-led lawsuit that aimed to strike down part of a federal law providing discrimination protections for people with disabilities. Indiana had joined the federal lawsuit filed by Texas in 2024 over the Biden administration’s addition of a gender identity-related disorder to the disabilities protected under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Indiana attorney general’s office filed a notice Friday withdrawing from the suit that initially included 17 Republican states…
Amid lawsuit, Montana disability rights groups celebrate federal protections
May 4, 2026 | Source: Montana Free Press
Dozens of people gathered Monday near the state Capitol building in Helena to celebrate a longstanding federal disability rights policy now at the center of a national lawsuit backed by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen. Advocates say the policy, commonly referred to as Section 504, has been the backbone of disability protections and laws for decades. The section of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act helps guarantee that people with disabilities have equal access to federally-funded programs and institutions…
Want to Help Disabled People? Be More Like George H.W. Bush.
May 4, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
President Trump has long insulted disabled people. Since retaking office, his administration has done much more than that, cutting social programs from housing to health care, and significantly weakening the Americans With Disabilities Act, the 1990 law that creates legal protections for millions. By contributing to the marginalization of disabled Americans, Mr. Trump and his allies have limited the ability of as many as 70 million people to pursue their own version of the American dream. These are Americans who, just like anyone, want opportunities based on merit and fair treatment before the law…
Neel: Cy-Crawl: Why accessibility still requires action
May 4, 2026 | Source: Iowa State Daily
In 1990, disability rights activists gathered at the steps of the U.S. Capitol to make a point that words alone had failed to communicate. One by one, they left their wheelchairs, crutches and mobility devices behind and began to crawl up the steps. The moment, now known as the Capitol Crawl, was not symbolic for the sake of spectacle. It was a direct confrontation with inaccessibility. The message was simple and undeniable: if disabled people could not enter the Capitol, then the system itself was inaccessible…
STUDY: Indiana/Illinois employ less than 50% of individuals with disabilities
May 6, 2026 | Source: WTWO
The new study by Everway shows that both Illinois and Indiana are employing less than 50% of their residents living with disabilities. The data identified significant variances across the county and highlights where businesses are successfully tapping into the full spectrum of talent and where barriers may still exist. Everway provides solutions for neuroinclusion through their assistive technology software used by schools and organizations to provide tools to help learn, understand, and communicate. Indiana ranks 38th in the United States, with only 45.1% of people in the state with disabilities currently employed…

Irish woman plays key role in making Met Gala accessible
May 5, 2026 | Source: RTE-Ireland
Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute (and its star-studded Met Gala invite list) promise to deliver. Thoughtful exhibitions, spearheaded by head curator Andrew Bolton, are orchestrated years in advance. Celebrities and designers begin planning looks months ahead. Publications begin prepping social teams, articles, and posts with weeks of anticipation even before an extravagant, bedazzled gown hits the red carpeted steps. The Met Gala is a machine built for spectacle. But, historically, it hasn’t always been the case for everyone—until now, that is…
Online autism diagnoses could expand access as remote tools perform well for many children
May 5, 2026 | Source: Medical Xpress
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down clinics and forced face-to-face interactions behind masks, autism diagnoses for many children came to a halt. For Katherine Meltzoff, a professor of education at UC Riverside, the disruption exposed a critical gap and an opportunity. “We were trying to figure out how to adapt autism diagnostics to be done virtually,” Meltzoff said. The result is a set of telehealth tools described in a paper published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders that are designed to help clinicians diagnose autism remotely, especially for children who are older or have developed verbal communication skills…
‘How Do We Remember to Remember Disabled People?’: When Winter Weather Is an Accessibility Disaster
May 5, 2026 | Source: Streetsblog USA
When Cara Leibowitz, a wheelchair user and disability studies professor in New York City, peered outside her window after one of the East Coast’s many winter snowstorms, she realized she was completely stuck inside. “I’d look out and I’d be like, ‘Oh, the sidewalk isn’t too bad,’” she said. “And then I’d look at the curb cut, and I’d be like, ‘Oh, never mind. Guess I’m not going outside today.’” This experience is a common one for disabled people during snowstorms and other severe weather events…

Charlotte Cravins’ son Landry turned 2 in January. He’s a smiley little boy who loves singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and recently got his first pair of glasses. Landry was born with Down syndrome and has impaired vision. He receives publicly funded therapies that have helped him learn to crawl, to pull himself up to stand, and to use American Sign Language. Landry lives with his parents and sister in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, one of the eight states whose attorney general has chosen to remain in a lawsuit challenging a federal rule that protects accommodations for people with disabilities…

The bipartisan legislation restores and modernizes Pennsylvania’s process for adopting updated accessibility standards in building codes. “For people with disabilities, accessibility is absolutely essential,” said Senator Tartaglione. “With this bill now signed into law, Pennsylvania can move forward with modern, practical standards that allow everyone to fully participate in their communities. This is about fairness, dignity, and making sure no one is left behind.”…
Siouxland students help make county’s website become ADA accessible
May 6, 2026 | Source: KCAU
A group of visually impaired students from around the state, including in and around Siouxland, has helped to improve a county’s website, making it more accessible. After talking with a couple of students, they told a KCAU 9 reporter that many government websites are a nightmare to navigate. To use the internet, those who are blind or have low visibility use screen readers. “It is like you were sighted, except the screen is talking to you instead of your reading what is on the screen, so the screen has to say exactly what is on the screen…
Chaka Khan Foundation helps bring accessibility upgrades to renovated Metro Atlanta park
May 7, 2026 | Source: CBS News
A decades-long effort to transform a neighborhood park in College Park is reaching a major milestone. Renovations at Charles E. Phillips Esquire Park are now substantially complete, turning what community members once described as a rundown park into a modern gathering space with new amenities for families and children. For Amanda White, who lives nearby, the changes have already made a difference for her family. “I live right down the street, so I usually come down here on my lunch break,” White said…

Through a mother’s eyes: The wartime struggle of Israelis with special needs
May 1, 2026 | Source: The Jerusalem Post- Israel
It wasn’t the way I wanted to celebrate my son’s 30th birthday. Danny is on the autism spectrum, and what he enjoys doing on his birthday – because he loves everything to do with trains – is travel by rail to Haifa from Jerusalem and ride the Carmelit, an underground funicular railway, and then have a special lunch. Normally, even taking the bus to the train station in Jerusalem makes him so happy. He nearly bursts with joy, chatting with everyone around him, asking how they are doing, telling them he is going to Haifa…
How to make public spaces accessible, safe and attractive for an aging population
May 3, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
To be truly inclusive, public outdoor spaces must meet the needs of the entire population, regardless of age, physical ability or mobility. Although many cities have adopted universal accessibility policies in recent years, it’s important to consider whether these policies have actually improved accessibility and the experiences of citizens who live there. Public spaces can become a source of fatigue and stress for older people if their features are not properly designed. Several fields of research in urban design, urban planning, and architecture offer valuable tools for understanding the level of accessibility in public spaces…

Federal audits into accessibility, First Nations funding set to be released-May 4, 2026 | Source: iPolitics- Canada
Some government organizations average more than a hundred days to address accommodation requests, according to a new report from Canada’s auditor general. The report tabled in Parliament on Monday, May 4, looked at the experience of employees with disabilities at seven departments and agencies across the federal government between April 2023 and September 2025. It found that overall, the federal public service is fostering an accessible workplace. “While I am encouraged by the progress to date in representation and the commitment to accessibility, there is still room for improvement in how accommodations are delivered and employees with disabilities are engaged,” Auditor General Karen Hogan said in a news release…

Originally launched in 2019, the Mobility in Townsville Map supports wheelchair users and people with limited mobility by providing practical, experience‑based information to help plan travel throughout the city. The project tracks accessibility, pathway difficulty levels and connections between key destinations, with data informed directly by wheelchair users navigating the city. It was a Queensland first at the time and, seven years since its launch, the Mobility in Townsville Map continues to grow. Wheelchair pilots were again deployed in 2025 to analyse pathways across Magnetic Island, Rowes Bay, Pallarenda, Deeragun, Burdell, Kelso, Rasmussen, Condon and Heatley…

European Commission vows to make Europe accessible for people with disabilities
May 7, 2026 | Source: Euronews- Europe
Today, the European Commission has unveiled a social plan aimed at reinforcing the strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities up to 2030. In addition, many socio-economically vulnerable people are also exposed to discrimination and stigma. More needs to be done to ensure their rights are safeguarded. That includes the rights of persons with disabilities which must be fully realised in every aspect of life. With 90 million people – over 1 in 5 Europeans – living with a disability, full inclusion is imperative both to ensure rights are respected and also to boost Europe’s economy and democracy…
Digital NHS Risks Leaving Older Patients Behind
May 7, 2026 | Source: Medscape- UK
Older people are being left frustrated and excluded from GP services by the NHS drive to move appointment bookings online, an older people’s charity has warned. In its Care On Hold report, the charity Re-engage found that older people felt “disconnected” from healthcare, with many believing they were being discriminated against. Low internet use among older people, hard-to-navigate systems, and the removal of traditional booking routes were leading to delayed care and increased pressure on emergency services, as some resorted to calling 111 or treating themselves rather than attempting to book online…
Accessibility meeting highlights barriers, small fixes, and broader public awareness
May 7, 2026 | Source: Prince Albert Daily Herald- Canada
Prince Albert’s accessibility planning took another step forward as residents and city staff gathered at the Bernice Sayese Centre, to talk through the everyday barriers still facing people with disabilities, including those who are blind or visually impaired. The discussion, held as part of the city’s public accessibility process, touched on everything from snow-covered sidewalks and bus stops to overhanging branches, uneven pavement, and the need for better communication with the public. Anna Dinsdale, the city’s community safety and well-being manager, said one of the biggest takeaways was the value of hearing directly from people living with those challenges…

May 7, 2026 | Source: The Reporter- Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Coalition for Election (CECOE) said on Tuesday that the voter registration process for the country’s seventh general election was marred by repeated digital system failures, limited accessibility for people with disabilities, and security incidents including killings, abductions and intimidation targeting election officials. The coalition, which is accredited by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), deployed 522 long-term observers to nearly 4,400 voter registration centers across all regional states and city administrations, with the exception of Tigray…
How the Sociability app puts accessibility on the map to help disabled people break down barriers
May 7, 2026 | Source: Big Issue- UK
Had it not been for the kindness of a stranger, Sarah Tooke’s journey to the UK’s biggest disability conference could have begun disastrously. As the 28-year-old’s train pulled into Birmingham from Hertfordshire, it soon became clear that the passenger assistance she’d pre-booked hadn’t materialised. The doors were closing in on her wheelchair and the train was about to move on. “I’m sure everyone in this room will have had that kind of experience,” the library assistant tells me. “You get sort of desensitised to it.”…
UNDP and the League of Arab States forge urgent action plan for disability inclusion amid regional crises
May 7, 2026 | Source: UNDP- Egypt
In a region where the challenges of disability are increasingly compounded by conflict, displacement, and barriers to basic services, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the League of Arab States have launched a renewed push to integrate disability rights into the core of development and crisis recovery efforts. Meeting in Cairo for the Second Technical Peer Learning Workshop on Disability Inclusion, regional government leaders, civil society organizations, and over a dozen UN agencies convened to accelerate the implementation of the Second Arab Decade for Persons with Disabilities (2023-2032)…
Why the right to work still falls short for persons with disabilities
May 7, 2026 | Source: Open Global Rights- Buenos Aires
Despite decades of international commitments, the right to work remains largely unfulfilled for persons with disabilities. Globally, only 27% of persons with disabilities are employed, compared to 56% of persons without disabilities. This gap persists across every region and income level. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) enshrines the right to work “on an equal basis with others” in an open, inclusive, and accessible labor market. International Labour Organization standards, such as the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Disabled Persons) Convention No. 159, similarly recognize persons with disabilities as workers and insist on real equity in access to training and employment…
