Some older Americans are ‘unretiring’ to keep up with cost of living, AARP survey finds
February 5, 2026 | Source: CNBC
Some Americans ages 50 and over are exiting retirement and returning to work, according to a new AARP survey. Most surveyed individuals who are “unretiring” say they’re motivated to make money amid today’s high living costs, the nonprofit organization, which represents people ages 50 and older, found. In the past six months, 7% of retirees have re-entered the labor force, up from 6% who said the same in summer 2025, according to AARP’s survey results. The latest poll’s results are based on responses from 2,083 adults aged 50 and up who were interviewed in November and December…
HUD, whistleblower says CHA has violated disability and civil rights laws for years
February 11, 2026 | Source: Chicago Sun-Times
Before her daughter died, Lynya Cooper spent more than two years submitting documents to the Chicago Housing Authority explaining why she needed a wheelchair-accessible unit. Cooper’s daughter, Trebora Talbert, had a progressive neurological disease preventing her from walking or performing everyday activities on her own. The pair lived on the second floor of a building without an elevator, which meant Cooper often had to call a private ambulance company or the Chicago Fire Department to help Talbert get to and from her frequent medical appointments…

Schools race to meet web accessibility deadlines
February 6, 2026 | Source: K-12 Dive
New federal accessibility rules for web content and mobile apps will start being enforced as early as this April — but many school districts won’t be ready to comply, recent survey results show. Only 14% of respondents say their districts have completed or nearly completed updates to ensure digital platforms and their content are accessible as mandated under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a survey conducted by the National School Public Relations Association and Sogolytics, a survey and experience management platform…
Wheelchair User Helps Others Understand Accessibility Challenges
February 6, 2026 | Source: People Newspapers
My first thought when coming into school is “I really hope my friends are here.” That may seem normal — everyone wants their friends to be there — but it’s actually for a totally different reason. Yes, I love my friends’ company, but a day without them could cause chaos for me. I walk to my classes at Highland Park Middle School with my friends, like everyone else, but if one of the friends whom I walk with is absent, then it’s up to me to figure out how I am going to get to my classes. It can be really stressful, especially when I know that there are places where I can’t go because of the inaccessibility…
How Designing with Disability in Mind Sparks Innovation
February 9, 2026 | Source: Havard Business Review
In 2003, when plumbing fixtures industry veteran Rob Buete first encountered the “walk-in tub” made by a startup called Safety Tub, he burst out laughing. A bathtub with a door? It seemed like a joke, or at best a clunky contraption for frail seniors who couldn’t step over a regular tub. Buete was spectacularly wrong. As he told us in an interview last year, he would soon learn a profound (and profitable) lesson. When a friend landed the East Coast distribution for Safety Tubs and brought him aboard, Buete learned that thousands of leads for tub sales were flooding in from AARP Magazine ads…
Massachusetts publishes digital accessibility and equity plan
February 10, 2026 Source: StateScoop
Massachusetts’ digital accessibility and equity board on Tuesday published a statewide digital accessibility and equity strategic plan for executive agencies, which aims to ensure all digital services are accessible to people with disabilities. The plan, the product of a multi-year effort following an executive order Gov. Maura Healy signed in 2023, defines the plan’s mission, vision, goals and strategies. The order also directed the state’s technology office to expand its accessibility leadership under a chief IT accessibility officer…
The Political World of Caregiving
February 10, 2026 | Source: Mother Jones
It’s an old adage: when people get married, they promise to stick together “in sickness and in health.” But that’s easier said than done when you’re caregiving for a spouse or long-term partner, when systemic failures often lead to burnout. In her new book, In Sickness and in Health: Love Stories from the Front Lines of America’s Caregiving Crisis, University of Connecticut professor Laura Mauldin explores the relationships between caregivers and their disabled and sick spouses, and the underlying lack of structural support in the US that makes unpaid care an inescapable feature of most such relationships…

People with disabilities lobby for better worker pay, housing access
February 10, 2026 | Source: WXXI News
People with disabilities and their advocates are trying to present a united front this week as they press state lawmakers on key priorities. Top issues include better pay for workers, expanded access to affordable housing for direct care system employees, and providing more access to employment opportunities. “In previous years, we’ve seen how a fragmented message does not land well with legislators, and it doesn’t really, doesn’t get us to the types of investments that we’re looking to see, or the types of policy goals that we’re looking to achieve,” said Michael Seerieter, president and CEO of the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation…
Toolkit: Ensuring State Implementation of HHS’ Updated Section 504 Rule
February 11, 2026 | Source: Center for American Progress
The disability community is rapidly evolving to use identity-first language in place of person-first language. This is because it views disability as being a core component of identity, much like race and gender. Some members of the community, such as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, prefer person-first language. In this report, the terms are used interchangeably. In May 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a rule updating Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act…
This Everyday Metric Is Becoming One Of The Most Important In Aging
February 11, 2026 Source: Mind Body Green
When we think about markers of long-term health, most of us picture blood tests, scans, or wearable data dashboards. Rarely do we think about how fast we walk. Yet researchers are increasingly calling gait speed one of the most powerful (and overlooked) indicators of future health, especially when it comes to muscle strength, mobility, and independence as we age. In fact, gait speed is now often referred to as a “functional vital sign,” joining metrics like blood pressure and heart rate. It’s not because walking speed reflects athleticism or fitness goals, but because it captures how well multiple systems in the body are working together: muscles, bones, nerves, balance, and even cognitive processing…
My mission to make life more user friendly for the disability community
February 11, 2026 | Source: Nature
Fifty-seven-year-old Josh Miele is a blind scientist, an inventor of adaptive technology and a 2021 MacArthur Foundation ‘genius’ fellow. In the 1990s, as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) — before GPS use was commonplace — Miele could be seen around town climbing up street signs and feeling the embossed letters to work out which street he was on when travelling in unfamiliar areas, all to the surprise of bystanders. “Some accessibility is just about getting things done, and some accessibility is about teaching others about how much of a pain in the neck it is to get things done,” says Miele…
Philadelphia’s moment on the world stage brings a new imperative for business
February 12, 2026 | Source: The Business Journals
As Philadelphia prepares to welcome more than a million visitors for major events this year, businesses across the region are focused on logistics: staffing, safety, customer experience, and scale. But Bancroft, a 143-year-old regional nonprofit that specializes in special education, housing, and programming for those with autism and other disabilities, also wants to ensure businesses are focused on accessibility. An estimated 150,000 visitors coming to Philadelphia this year will identify as neurodiverse, including between 10,000 and 20,000 who are autistic, according to Bancroft…
Local couple denied accessible seats to Pink Floyd tribute concert, WAVY gets involved
February 12, 2026 | Source: WAVY
For people with disabilities accustomed to overcoming obstacles, getting handicapped-accessible tickets to the upcoming Pink Floyd tribute concert was just another brick in the wall. The Black Jacket Symphony at Harrison Opera House is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, a date that’s been on the calendar for Cheryl and Robert Drouin for months. Cheryl is adjudicated disabled with fibromyalgia, multiple strokes and has a service dog. Robert Drouin went on the site to purchase accessible tickets, but was not able to buy them…

After a Life-Changing Injury, This Man Is Fixing Footpaths, Buildings and Public Spaces for Access
February 6, 2026 | Source: The Better India- India
One morning, the city Prateek Khandelwal had always moved through with ease suddenly shut its doors on him. A short flight of steps. A narrow doorway. A washroom he could not enter. After a spinal cord injury in his 20s took away his ability to walk, everyday spaces began sending a clear message: this city was not built for him. Cities promise freedom — to move, work, learn, and belong. For millions of people, they do the opposite. Accessibility is often treated as a special add-on, rather than a basic part of urban life…

The most prevalent disability in classrooms may be FASD — and supporting students is vital
February 9, 2026 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
As I walk into the classroom as a newly graduated teacher, I see children — each with unique abilities, interests and an eagerness to learn. This Ontario classroom was designed to be inclusive — a space where all students, regardless of their needs, can thrive. Yet, as an educator, I find myself asking: Am I truly prepared to support every child? Have I received the training I need to guide each student on their learning journey including students with disabilities such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)? Many teachers entering the classroom after graduating from teacher education programs in Ontario will ask similar questions…
MIB sets OTT accessibility rules, mandates captions and audio description
February 9, 2026 | Source: Indian Television- India and Storyboard18 and Indian Broadcasting World
The government has asked OTT platforms to make their shows easier to watch and hear. A new set of accessibility guidelines from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting requires streaming services to add features for viewers with hearing and visual impairments. The move follows the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and is meant to bring streaming closer to the promise of equal access. In simple terms, if a film or series is coming to an OTT platform, it should not arrive empty-handed…
Heart-driven innovator: 21-year-old start-up founder uses accessibility tech to help others
February 9, 2026 | Source: Straits Times- Republic of Singapore
Mr Raymond Loong Ng’s first foray into entrepreneurship was buying snacks from a mamak shop to sell to his secondary schoolmates the next day. “Because our break was only 10 minutes, many students were too lazy to go down to the canteen to buy food,” he recalled. “I realised that if I bought snacks in bulk and packaged them together, I could earn myself some extra pocket money.” While Mr Ng’s first “venture” was quickly shut down by his teachers, he has enjoyed far greater success since…
Accessibility an afterthought at this year’s Winterlude, advocates say
February 10, 2026 | Source: CBC- Canada
People with disabilities say this year’s Winterlude wasn’t designed with accessibility in mind, barring people with mobility challenges from one of the festival’s main attractions. Linda Paul has been attending the Ottawa-Gatineau winter festival for 28 years, but said she left feeling frustrated after visiting Confederation Park during its first two weekends this year. Paul wanted to explore the Crystal Garden, an outdoor exhibition featuring ice sculptures, but said she couldn’t see the artwork because both times she showed up there was no accessible pathway she could get across with her mobility scooter…
Mexico City: Create Care Law Grounded on Disability Rights
February 11, 2026 | Source: Human Rights Watch- Mexico
The Mexico City Congress should seriously consider a proposal submitted by a coalition led by people with disabilities during its new session, Human Rights Watch said today. That proposal urges lawmakers to adopt a rights-based framework grounded in autonomy, participation, and independent living for care and support legislation. The Coalition, Cuidados Sí; Apoyos También (Care Yes; Supports Too), is made up largely of people with disabilities. It includes organizations such as Mexicanas con Discapacidad, Women Enabled International, Movimiento de Personas con Discapacidad as well as human rights organizations including Yo También, Human Rights Watch, and Documenta…
Accessibility gaps exposed as millions of voters with disabilities cast ballots
February 12, 2026 | Source: Dhaka Tribune- India
The 13th national parliament election was held on Thursday with the participation of more than three million voters with disabilities across the country. While many exercised their constitutional right to vote in Dhaka and elsewhere, the day also exposed persistent accessibility barriers at polling centres, most of which were set up in educational institutions. At several polling centres in the capital, voters with disabilities faced significant challenges in casting their ballots. At Mohammadpur Government College in the morning, two wheelchair users and one voter using crutches arrived to vote…
Letter from MP and activists demands rights and accessibility improvements to railways bill
February 12, 2026 | Source: Disability News Service- UK
Disabled campaigners are backing demands for major rights-based changes to the government’s railways bill that would target the poor state of accessibility across the network. Disabled-led organisations and allies including Disabled People Against Cuts, the Campaign for Level Boarding and The Association of British Commuters (ABC) have signed a letter being sent today (Thursday) to transport secretary Heidi Alexander. The letter from backbench Labour MP Chris Hinchliff calls for major amendments to the government’s railways bill, changes which campaigners believe would place disability rights and accessibility at the heart of the legislation…
Cuts to sign language and interpretation spark pushback at UN rights council
February 12, 2026 | Source: Geneva Solutions- Switzerland
Countries at the UN rights body protested a decision to suspend accessibility and limit interpretation services for meetings as the UN struggles with a liquidity crunch. The United Nations’ financial troubles look set to continue wreaking havoc in Geneva this year. Meeting times are being sliced, speakers’ time cut short, while travel restrictions and the hiring freeze remain in place. Weeks away from its first regular session of the year, the Human Rights Council approved on Monday another round of cost-cutting measures – the third year in a row…
Fairness, functionality and the future – accessibility and inclusion in transport planning
February 13, 2026 | Source: Greater London Authority- UK
It’s vital that all Londoners are able to make the journeys they need to. Whether it is taking a child to school, caring for an elderly relative, going to work, socialising with friends or completing a weekly shop, using public transport is a vital part of daily life for many Londoners. In 2023, an estimated 8.6 million public transport journeys took place in London every day on our world-leading transport network.1 Yet, there are still some journeys which are too long, more difficult and less welcoming for some groups, as London’s transport network doesn’t fully consider the needs of the widest range of Londoners…
