Legal case over access to sensitive voter data returns to Wisconsin Supreme Court
April 20, 2026 | Source: Votebeat
The Wisconsin Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Tuesday in a case brought by a conservative group that could determine whether sensitive information about people judged mentally incapable of voting is a public record. It’s the second time justices will hear arguments in this case, which previously had been caught up in conflicting opinions issued by two of the state’s appeals court districts. It also became an attack point used by liberal Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor in the most recent Wisconsin Supreme Court election, which she won by 20 points…
‘I want accessibility’ Mother fights for handicap accessibility after Carnival cruise
April 20, 2026 | Source: Fox San Antonio
Vacation season is fast approaching… And in this economy, many FOX SA viewers take only one family vacation a year. And that’s after months of planning. Plans aside, one local family reached out to Investigative Problem Solver Darian Trotter, when their Carnival Cruise vacation went south. You can’t immediately tell. We certainly couldn’t, but Danny Schmetz has Muscular Dystrophy and Congenital Glycosylation Disorder. Both conditions limit the amount of time he can play in the back yard; or anywhere else for that matter. Even walking is challenging for the 10-year old…
WWII Museum hosting sensory-friendly morning for families across New Orleans
April 21, 2026 | Source: 4WWL
The National WWII Museum is opening its doors early this weekend for a special event designed to make history more accessible for all families. The museum’s upcoming Sensory Friendly Morning, held in partnership with the Autism Society of Greater New Orleans, gives families the chance to explore exhibits in a more comfortable, inclusive environment. “It’s an opportunity for folks who have autism, different types of needs on the spectrum, for people with PTSD—even for people who just don’t like crowds or loud noises,” said Maggie Hartley, the museum’s Director of Public Engagement. “It’s a way for everyone to have access to the museum.”…
NOAA weather radios offer alerts for deaf and hard of hearing
April 21, 2026 | Source: WSAW
When severe weather strikes, families in central Wisconsin rely on tornado sirens, NOAA weather radios, television or smartphones to receive emergency information. For many residents, the alarm from a NOAA weather radio is a lifeline during severe weather. Its sound can be heard for miles and can cut through the darkness at night. “So with a NOAA weather radio, you get the alert straight from the NWS as soon as they issue that watch or warning with life saving information,” said Caileigh Peterson, a specialist with Midland Radio Safety. But for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, the traditional NOAA weather radio alerts may not be enough to help keep them safe during severe weather…
Many Public Libraries Are in Need of Significant Repairs, But Lack the Funding
April 21, 2026 | Source: GAO
Public libraries are an essential part of communities. They provide free access to books, newspapers, the internet, and community programs. They also serve as community hubs—often as emergency shelters and voting sites. Unfortunately, many library buildings have fallen into disrepair, which may affect their ability to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Our report on the physical and financial challenges many public libraries face. Poor building conditions plague many of the nation’s public libraries. When we surveyed libraries nationally, staff told us that key issues are aging systems (many buildings are more than 40 years old) and accessibility issues…
FedEx settles charge it denied telework accommodations to workers with disabilities
April 21, 2026 | Source: HR Dive and Insurance Journal
The case against FedEx is an example of something many attorneys warned about as employers began to require workers to return to the office after COVID-19 cases declined: a rise in lawsuits against companies that did not sufficiently consider workers’ continued teleworking requests when instituting an RTO policy. Telework has long been considered a reasonable accommodation for workers for disabilities; EEOC’s page on the option dates all the way back to 2003. In the case of FedEx, the company closed an office in New Jersey and relocated dispatchers to New York in March 2020, which would have required the charging party, or primary plaintiff in the lawsuit, to travel significantly further…
Older Americans Are Hoarding America’s Potential
April 21, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
“Ageism” identifies an enduring phenomenon: the mistreatment of older people for no reason other than being older. Americans in middle age and beyond are routinely passed over for opportunities because of the irrelevant fact of a number on paper or how they act and look after getting older. In today’s world, the unfair discrimination they cite coexists with a different kind of unfairness: a gerontocratic society in which the old control ever more power and wealth, leading to overrepresentation in political life and unequal power in social life. It is not ageist to ask whether older people should be required to give more to younger Americans and national priorities — it is critical to the future of our democracy and society…
3D display of NFL prospects helps blind people experience draft week
April 22, 2026 | Source: WDSU
Many people will watch the 2026 NFL Draft in person or on television, but some can’t. Debby Hill is one of them. “A lot of us really want to know what the world is like out there beyond just hearing,” she said. Hill, and others who are blind or visually impaired, can only hear the names called. That’s where the Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh stepped up. “Sometimes we use real-world elements like the Steelers gear and 3D printed elements as to make tactile displays,” LAMP administrator Mark Lee said. “We started printing a couple of draft picks who we assume will be in the top 10.”…
Bill to shield Missouri businesses from ADA website lawsuits heads to governor
April 22, 2026 | Source: Missouri Independent
A bill that will protect Missouri’s small businesses from frivolous lawsuits now awaits the governor’s signature after gaining final approval from the legislature on Tuesday. The Act Against Abusive Website and Web Content Litigation addresses an issue that legislators say has harmed small businesses in Missouri and across the country. A growing number of businesses are being sued for minor violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act on their websites. These violations may include incompatibility with screen-reader software, insufficient color contrast or missing captions or transcripts for video and audio content. This makes it difficult for people with disabilities to navigate the websites…
Hearing restored with gene therapy for rare kind of deafness
April 22, 2026 | Source: NPR
An experimental gene therapy appears safe and highly effective for restoring hearing to people born with a rare form of deafness, researchers reported Wednesday. The study, the largest and longest to date to evaluate a gene therapy for hearing loss, provides powerful new evidence that the approach may provide the first way to restore hearing to people who are deaf. “The results are really remarkable,” Zheng-Yi Chen, an associate scientist at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston who led the study, published in the journal Nature. “This is really for the first time in the whole field a brand-new treatment option for genetic hearing loss. So that’s very exciting.”…
Why families caring for children with disabilities are suing Washington state
April 22, 2026 | Source: Washington State Standard
When Jamie and Chris Thompson got married, they created a big, blended family. Chris had three children from a previous marriage. Jamie had a son. Together, they had two more kids. The youngest, Colby, had bright blue eyes and chubby cheeks. Jamie Thompson called him the “little ham of the family.” But in 2010, a babysitter became so frustrated with his crying that she shook and slammed him, Jamie Thompson recalls. This left Colby, then 8 months, with a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him. Now 16, he can’t use his body and can’t communicate…
Christian Doctrines and Accessibility for the Disabled
April 22, 2026 | Source: The Living Church
One of the concerns I sometimes hear related to accessibility for disabled people in churches is that it is simply secular inclusion wrapped up in ideas that sound vaguely Christian. My view, on the contrary, is that theology related to disability, and the practical Christian attempts at fostering accessibility that go alongside that theology, have a long history rooted in Scripture and doctrine. Let’s consider three major, longstanding, doctrinal debates to observe how thoroughly orthodox and traditional (as opposed to being merely a secular intrusion) disability theology and practical attempts at disability accessibility truly are…
A New Yorker Rediscovers Her City, in a Wheelchair
April 22, 2026 | Source: The New York Times
I once measured good travel by how far I could get from the familiar. Now, travel for me means navigating what lies beyond the walls of my house. In December 2023, I endured a long hospitalization marred with medical errors. I returned to my Brooklyn home in late June 2024 as a bilateral below-the-knee amputee. My only remaining digit was my left thumb. A wheelchair has been my primary means of engaging with the world since. From the moment I left the hospital, I felt like a tourist in my body and in New York, my home of nearly two decades. Creating connections and seeking belonging feels like navigating a foreign landscape governed by new rules…
More than 42,600 students with a disability, including their siblings, accepted into Texas Education Freedom Account program
April 23, 2026 | Source: KXAN and KVUE
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts announced every single student in the top priority tier who applied to be in the state’s new education savings account will be awarded money for the next school year. The top priority tier includes children who have a qualifying disability and live in a household with an income level at or below 500% of the federal poverty level. The program rules allow the siblings of students who were accepted into the program to also be looped in. The Comptroller’s office said the number of children in the top priority tier, including their siblings, totaled 42,644…
‘I have a right to be there’: Disability advocates concerned about access changes at Nebraska State Capitol
April 23, 2026 Source: KOLN
Gun-rights activists protested it, and while Gov. Jim Pillen called it “well-intentioned,” he let it become law without his signature. LB 1237 prohibits carrying weapons in the Nebraska State Capitol and limits public entrance to the west side door. That change has some advocates in the disability community concerned. “I want to be there. I have a right to be there,” said Kathy Hoell. Hoell, of Papillion, uses a power wheelchair to get around — something she says is hard enough to do at the Capitol on a normal day. But these new changes coming to the Capitol, in her words, make her “angry, to put it mildly.”…
Advocates praise new state protections for people with disabilities
April 23, 2026 | Source: Herald-Standard
Local lawmakers and advocates lauded a trio of new executive orders designed to offer expanded data security and legislative advisory capacity for Pennsylvanians with disabilities. The orders, which were signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro late last week, reestablished the Developmental Disabilities Council and created the Governor’s Advisory Commission on People with Disabilities, among a number of other protections. “It’s fantastic, (Shapiro) has always been a great supporter of people with disabilities, especially in getting the resources and funding to support them,” said The Arc of Washington County Director of Advocacy Darrilyn McCrerey. “It’s an exciting time.”…
How Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Work for Americans with Disabilities
April 23, 2026 | Source: American Enterprise Institute
Compared to the typical American, Americans with disabilities are about twice as likely to be unemployed and they are two-thirds less likely to even enter the workforce. These facts alone should give policymakers pause. Eighty percent of people with disabilities who are not employed report that the obstacle is the disability itself. For decades, the story has been a frustrating one: lower employment rates, persistent discrimination, and heavy reliance on disability insurance. The Americans with Disabilities Act was meant to change that. But research suggests it had an unintended consequence: decreased employment among the disabled, possibly by discouraging hiring by raising perceived costs and legal risks for employers…

Ontario accessibility laws running on fumes, leaving drivers on empty
April 17, 2026 | Source: The Kingston Whig Standard- Canada
For most drivers, stopping for gas is routine — quick, automatic, unremarkable. For Leslie MacLean, it should be no different. She drives independently and lives life on her own terms. But at the pump, that independence is often undermined by a simple reality: the service she needs isn’t always there — and no one appears to be ensuring it is. MacLean, who uses a wheelchair, says she has seen stark differences in service from major fuel retailers — and the situation has worsened over time. For years, it wasn’t a major problem. She regularly filled up at a Canadian Tire Gas+ location on Bath Road in Kingston, where staff would assist when needed…
Bennett unveils national accessibility plan for Israelis with disabilities
April 17, 2026 | Source: Jewish News Syndicate- Israel
Naftali Bennett, head of the new Bennett 2026 political party, unveiled a National Accessibility and Inclusion Plan on Thursday evening, presenting a five-point framework designed to improve economic participation and social integration for Israel’s estimated 1.5 million citizens with disabilities. The plan was introduced at an event held at the offices of Kaltura in Bnei Brak attended by about 100 participants, including people with disabilities, Paralympic athletes, advocates and community leaders. Kaltura is an Israeli-founded technology company that provides video platforms for online learning, virtual events and enterprise communications…
Higher CVD Risk in Parents of Neurodivergent Children
April 18, 2026 | Source: European Medical Journal- Europe
Parents of children with common neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) may face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) than parents of children without diagnoses, a 2026 Swedish cohort study of more than 2 million people has found. Researchers collected data from a study sample of 1,180,457 mothers and 882,619 fathers, with a mean follow-up of 16 years. Of the population, 187,951 mothers and 143,486 fathers had at least one child diagnosed with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Mothers who had children with diagnosed NDDs had a hazard ratio of 1.27…

Establish Legal Rights Of The Disabled
April 24, 2026 | Source: The Rising Nepal
The Department of Information Technology has implemented new web accessibility features aimed at making government websites easier to use, more accessible, and user-friendly for all citizens. As stated by the Department’s Director General, Shree Chandra Shah, this initiative launched under the Government Integrated Website Management System (GIWMS) specifically targets users with disabilities and those who rely on assistive technologies. With the implementation of these features, government websites can now be conveniently operated using only a keyboard…
Disabled driver to test European charging accessibility with trip
April 21, 2026 | Source: Transport + Energy- UK
A disabled driver is set to take on a 2,800-mile return journey from Birmingham to Spain in a fully electric vehicle (EV), testing Europe’s accessible charging network. Organised by Disabled Motoring UK (DMUK) and supported by the Accessible Vehicle Club, the project will document the real-life challenges of travelling abroad in an electric vehicle (EV) as a disabled person. It comes as accessibility is still lagging severely behind in the charging network. In the UK, just 2.3% of on-street charge points are currently considered accessible, while standards across Europe are only just being developed…
Standardising Digital Accessibility In Pakistan For Persons With Disabilities
April 22, 2026 | Source: The Nation- Pakistan
This article maps the current legislative framework (federal and provincial) for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Pakistan, focusing on digital accessibility, identifies sectoral policies, and proposes a way forward to harmonise legislative provisions into providing actual benefit to PWDs. Digital accessibility ensures that citizens with disabilities can access websites, apps, and online services independently—using screen readers, captions, keyboard navigation, or simpqQAlified interfaces. In Pakistan, the right to access information is already recognised through constitutional guarantees and federal/ provincial disability rights laws; however, it has not standardised how that right must be delivered to PWDs so they can benefit from digital technologies and are not left behind…
Mark Butler’s NDIS cuts will force people with disabilities like mine to withdraw from society
April 22,2026 | Source: The Guardian- UK
At times of extreme dysregulation, I turn to the safest of safe foods: a particular frozen cheeseburger that has changed its recipe once since last century. I knew it was time to throw one in the microwave when the federal health minister, Mark Butler, began wrapping up his address to the National Press Club on the topic of “reforms” to the national disability insurance scheme. For those playing along at home, this need for a safe food is because my functional capacity is adversely affected by the abject terror that accompanies the idea of savage cuts to the NDIS – and on Wednesday those fears turned out to be well founded…
Kazakhstan Expands Accessible Transportation for People with Disabilities
April 23, 2026 | Source: The Times of Central Asia- Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is expanding efforts to improve accessible transportation for people with disabilities. At a government meeting on April 21, Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbaev reported on progress in implementing an inclusive policy in the transport sector. He said that, as part of the Inclusive Policy Concept for 2025-2030, Kazakhstan is taking measures to ensure accessibility across three key areas: infrastructure, transport, and services. In the rail sector, approximately 90% of trains have been equipped with lifts and compartments adapted for passengers with disabilities…
UNESCO highlights barriers facing students with disabilities in education systems
April 23, 2026 | Source: Digital Watch- Paraguay
Efforts to expand inclusive education in Latin America continue to face structural challenges, as new findings presented by UNESCO highlight persistent gaps in data and policy implementation. During a regional congress in Paraguay, experts stressed that the lack of reliable and comparable data on students with disabilities remains a major barrier to designing effective education systems. UNESCO presents stronger data systems as essential to making inequalities visible and improving public decision-making. The analysis draws on the Regional Educational Information System on Students with Disabilities, known as SIRIED, which aims to strengthen evidence-based decision-making across the region through comparable and regularly updated information…
Man with disability couldn’t find work in village — Threads community fixed situation in a couple of days
April 23, 2026 | Source: Nashaniva- Belarus
A user with the nickname marisemashko published a video featuring Mikalai, a 41-year-old resident of Dukora village in the Minsk region. Due to the consequences of a craniocerebral injury, Mikalai has a third group disability. Like many Belarusians with such a status, the man struggled to find work for a long time — he had to survive on a pension of about 500 rubles. At the same time, according to the video’s author, Mikalai is ready to work: “The man doesn’t drink, he wants to work. Of course, in the past, he was on record for a bit. Now Kolia doesn’t drink, he understands he shouldn’t, and this is the third year. But he isn’t even hired as a janitor anywhere. He lives in his old parental house.”…
Chilliwack’s newly minted Accessibility and Inclusion Plan hot off the presses
April 23, 2026 | Source: Chilliwack Progress- Canada
A made-in-Chilliwack plan to remove barriers for people with disabilities is officially complete. Countless volunteer hours went into crafting the City of Chilliwack’s newly minted Accessibility and Inclusion Plan. “This kind of plan is only possible through substantial collaboration and regular feedback,” said Coun. Jason Lum, chair of the Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Committee. “It has been a pleasure to chair this committee, and while we know there is more work to do, I look forward to taking these next steps as an organization to make Chilliwack more accessible and inclusive.”…
Up to 140,000 disability jobs at risk as NDIS overhaul begins to bite
April 24, 2026 | Source: HRD- Australia
Up to 140,000 jobs in Australia’s disability and social assistance sector are predicted to disappear over the next four years following the Albanese government’s sweeping overhaul of the National Disability Insurance Scheme — a workforce contraction that economists warn could rival the largest industry downturns in the country’s recent history. The forecast, from Bloomberg Economics analyst James McIntyre, is based on the government’s own target of reducing NDIS participant numbers from 760,000 today to 600,000 by 2030 — a reduction of more than 20 per cent…

- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
