The United States alleges that from 2016 through at least 2021, the defendant insurers paid hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal kickbacks to the defendant brokers in exchange for enrollments into the insurers’ Medicare Advantage plans…

May 2, 2025 | Source: People
A woman’s recent request for assistance at an Atlanta airport left her feeling “helpless,” — and her detailed account of the experience on Facebook prompted others to contact the airline on her behalf. On Saturday, April 13, Liz Venendaal, a life coach for people with disabilities, was traveling home from a work trip in Spokane, Wash., en route to Florida when she had a roughly one-hour layover at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

MTA spent 8 years and over $3M fighting broken-elevator case — rather than fix them: ‘Disgrace’
May 3, 2025 | Source: NY Post
The New York subway system is saddled with more than three dozen chronically broken elevators, but the MTA would rather fight activists suing to get them fixed than use the money to repair them, critics raged this week. In the past week, 35 to 43 elevators were out of service on any given day, up to 13% of all elevators, including many at busy stations like Times Square and Union Square, according to the MTA’s elevator status page. Yet the Metropolitan Transit Authority has spent millions of dollars and eight years fighting a federal class-action lawsuit brought by disabled New Yorkers over the broken lifts…
Private school vouchers are now law in Texas. Here’s how they will work
May 3, 2025 | Source: Texas Tribune & KEPR
Gov. Greg Abbott on Saturday signed legislation authorizing a private school voucher program into law, marking the grand finale of an oftentimes ugly conflict that has largely defined Texas politics this decade. Senate Bill 2 will allow families to use public taxpayer dollars to fund their children’s education at an accredited private school or to pay for a wide range of school-related expenses, like textbooks, transportation or therapy. The program will be one of the largest school voucher initiatives in the nation…
Disability discrimination persists despite growing awareness and advocacy

Alexa Zuckerman, a junior majoring in history, grips her forearm crutches as she braces for her battle to get onto the only elevator at Frey Hall. She propels her black crutches forward into the cramped silver space, but a pack of students cut in front of her, causing her to lose the last spot on the elevator. “I often have to fight my way in to get a spot into the elevator,” she said. It’s a struggle Zuckerman knows all too well, and she isn’t alone. Accessibility barriers for people with disabilities has been a long-standing obstacle for students and faculty alike at Stony Brook University…

May 4, 2025 | Source: MPR News
Disability rights advocates rallied at the Minnesota Capitol on Saturday to protest cuts to programs and services. Demonstrators said President Donald Trump has proposed actions that would jeopardize access to housing, health care and education for people with disabilities. “This is an attack on human rights,” said Rep. Kim Hicks, a DFLer from Rochester. “It is an attack that is coordinated to ensure that people with disabilities go away. We’re staying in the community and we’re going to fight for the support we need to do that.”…

May 4, 2025 | Source: NBC
The Boston Renegades baseball team plays beep baseball, an adaptive version of America’s favorite pastime, designed specifically for blind and visually-impaired athletes. From afar, it might look like any ordinary softball practice—players warming up, bats cracking and coaches shouting encouragement. But take a few steps closer, and something remarkable comes into focus: blindfolded athletes, beeping balls and bases and a team united by passion, perseverance, and an unwavering competitive fire…

What RFK Jr. Doesn’t Understand About Disability
May 5, 2025 | Source: The Bulwark
When Ari Ne’eman heard Robert F. Kennedy Jr. call autism an “ep.idemic” that “destroys families,” Ne’eman felt like he had stepped into a time machine — heading in the wrong direction. It was during an April 16 press conference where Kennedy, the nation’s top health official, went on to claim that autistic children will “never pay taxes” or “hold a job” and that their condition is preventable. “This is a throwback to how people talked about autism 25 years ago,” Ne’eman said…

Maeve, who is 10 years old, has been blind since birth. To Improve Accessibility, Closed Captioning Gets An Overhaul
May 6, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop
Closed captioning for television and movies has remained largely unchanged for decades, but a new design aims to give people with disabilities a better idea of what’s happening on screen. Known as “Caption with Intention,” the system employs animation, color and variable typography to give viewers who aren’t hearing sound and dialogue a sense of emotion, tone and pacing. The captioning system was developed by FCB Chicago, an advertising agency, in partnership with the Chicago Hearing Society and the film company Rakish Entertainment…

Meanwhile, residents in Northeast and West Coast states have gained decades of extra life over the same period. Researchers analyzing mortality data across America report that a baby girl born in Oklahoma today might live only a few months longer than one born in 1900 – a shocking contrast to places like New York, where female life expectancy jumped 20 years over the same timeframe…

Voting with a disability can be a challenge, even in a country like Australia
May 1, 2025 | Source: ABC- Australia
When I go to vote, my priority is to find a location with wheelchair access. Voting is a democratic right for all Australians, but for some people with disabilities, it can be an uncomfortable and sometimes distressing experience. Unfortunately, the only early polling location is 50 kilometres away from where I live in regional WA, and it’s not listed as wheelchair accessible…

The Supreme Court verdict last week, which directed the central government and regulatory bodies to ensure that digital infrastructure and services are accessible to all citizens, will help make digital services inclusive, especially for people with disabilities and other marginalised groups, said lawyers and experts. The top court in its April 30 order held that meaningful access to digital tools and services is a part of the fundamental right to the protection of life and personal liberty, and issued directions to the regulators to improve customer verification (KYC) processes so that they don’t exclude any sections of the society…
