California students with disabilities face ‘terrifying’ special ed cuts after Trump changes
December 4, 2025 | Source: Cal Matters
Advocates for children with disabilities — and even some Republican lawmakers — are warning that the federal government needs to preserve its special education programs as the Trump administration moves to dismantle the Education Department. The department oversees roughly $15 billion annually on programs that support students with disabilities and ensures states are providing them education, as well as investigating complaints that these children are facing discrimination. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has already launched plans to transfer her department’s elementary, technical and international programs to other agencies…

United Parks and Resorts is a global theme park and entertainment company that owns or licenses seven brands including SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and Aquatica Orlando. The ADA prohibits discrimination based on disability by public accommodations, including theme parks…
How Rosa Parks’ legacy inspired a new fight over who could ride the bus
December 1, 2025 | Source: The 19th
Decades after her act of defiance, Rosa Parks galvanized a cadre of activists to protest their own conditions and, though the scope of her legacy for them is still coming into focus, it remains just as powerful. They were fighting for disability access, and, like Parks, they used public transportation as a springboard. The disability rights movement took shape against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, growing in size with each passing year. By the 1980s, it had made strides, successfully passing legislation and increasing the visibility of people living with disabilities…

December 1, 2025 | Source: NOTUS
For the low price of $1 million, you can apply for a new card that comes with exclusive perks and is marketed with a sleek website featuring an animated bald eagle standing before sunlit mountains. It has all the markings of a website selling a luxury travel credit card. But it’s not. It’s the official landing page and application for a new pathway to permanent residency in the United States, the Trump Gold Card. In small print at the top of the webpage: “This is an official website of the United States government.”…
Apple Puts Accessibility Center Stage in a Joyful Campus Musical
December 2, 2025 | Source: ADWEEK and Forbes
Apple is tapping into a similar creative approach that helped redefine how the brand talks about accessibility. The tech giant re-hired Kim Gehrig, the director of its Emmy Award-winning 2022 ad “The Greatest,” for a new spot demonstrating how people with disabilities use its built-in accessibility features in everyday life. Timed to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Dec. 3, the commercial from Apple’s in-house team, Apple Marcom, follows a group of disabled students as they learn they have been accepted to college and transition to life on campus…

December 2, 2025 | Source: WYMT
Perry County students presented their final designs for a new sensory park after completing a 10-week accessibility program called Coordinating and Assisting the Reuse of Assistive Technology: Together One Priority, or CARAT-TOP. On Monday, the students along with parents and city, county and school leaders gathered at the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health building for a certificate ceremony. The students, who had never worked on a community design project when the program began in September, led presentations to city, county and school leaders showing what a sensory park could look like…
Clearing the path for more accessible outdoor spaces
December 1, 2025 | Source: VT Digger
Before Edie Perkins heads out to explore a new trail, she runs through a mental checklist. Is there accessible parking? How far is it from her car to the trail? Is the surface hard-packed or uneven? For most people, those questions barely register. For Perkins, who uses a wheelchair, they determine whether she can venture out at all. “Exploring new places is always exciting. It can also be a little frightening…there are so many things that able-bodied people don’t understand about accessing the outdoors,” she said…
Her bedazzled cane helps her travel the world (and spark change)
December 1, 2025 | Source: USA Today
Blind singer Lachi calls it her “glam cane”: a colorful, bedazzled cane that helps her navigate her surroundings while also stylishly matching her outfits. Also known as a white cane — although hers are far more vibrant than that — the device gives Lachi autonomy when she’s traveling, as she’s often on the road for personal trips and gigs as a touring performer and speaker. “I am a globally touring performer and speaker, so heavy travel is a part of everyday life for me,” the New York City-based singer told USA TODAY…
Donald Trump’s Nephew, Whose Son Has ‘Severe’ Disabilities, Asks ‘Where Has This Country Gone?’ After Uncle Uses the R-Word
December 2, 2025 | Source: People
President Donald Trump’s nephew, Fred Trump III, is sharing his feelings about a “hurtful” word that has been prominently thrown around in recent days. In a late-night Truth Social diatribe on Thursday, Nov. 27, the president sarcastically criticized “citizens” and “patriots” who he claims have been “just plain STUPID” when it comes to immigration. He took specific aim at the Somali community in Minnesota and the state’s governor, former Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, in his Thanksgiving night post…
Michigan fails its students with disabilities, first-ever report finds
December 3, 2025 | Source: Bridge Michigan
When Michigan officials this year lauded a record-high 82.8% high school graduation rate in 2024, special education advocates pointed out a vastly different outcome: only 61% of students with disabilities graduated. That is one of several metrics showing what students with disabilities are up against in Michigan: They score below their peers in Michigan and across the nation in several areas, according to the first-ever Michigan Special Education Benchmarks Report released Wednesday by the Autism Alliance of Michigan…
When ableism and racism intertwine
December 4, 2025 | Source: The Christian Century
In popular imagination, racism and ableism are often problems of isolated individuals, people here and there who do or say bigoted things. Conversations about intersectionality—the ways different marginalized identities get linked together within broader social structures—have only just begun to enter the mainstream. In much of the church, these conversations are still rare, although they are as necessary as ever. Lamar Hardwick’s latest book thus comes as a vital contribution. Hardwick, a disability scholar and a Black autistic pastor, crafts an insightful examination of disability and racism in the church, focusing on the ways the two are entwined…

In the past, approvals had to be signed by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Chief Human Capital Officer, Thomas J. Nagy Jr…

The Conservative government failed to ensure that vital information was provided to Deaf and disabled people in an accessible format in the early stages of the pandemic, the Covid inquiry has concluded. The second report of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, which focuses on “core decision-making and political governance”, highlights key failures around accessible versions of information and the provision of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters for government announcements. The Office of Public Service Accessibility, created in 2018 to help departments meet or exceed the Accessible Canada Act, has funding only until March 31, 2026, with no clear mandate beyond that date. ‘Every step a struggle:’ Nigerian woman with disabilities leads push for dignity and inclusion
November 30, 2025 | Source: United Nations- Nigeria
“Sometimes, it feels like the world isn’t made for people like me,” said Shiminenge, her voice steady despite the weight of the words. In Gbajimba, north-central Nigeria, the 32-year-old navigates daily life in a camp for displaced people that offers little space, safety, or accessibility for people living with disabilities. Around her, tents stretch across dry, uneven ground. Paths turn muddy and difficult when it rains. Toilets and water points sit farther than she can reach without help. Yet every morning, she pushes through the same obstacles, determined not to disappear in a place that was never designed for her…

Musicians from small organisations lead the charge to platform people with disability
December 2, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Is classical music really for everyone? That’s the question concert pianist and academic Grace Kim grappled with when she became a parent. Kim’s son Noah is neurodivergent and traditional concert spaces didn’t cater to him. Some of the barriers Kim and Noah experienced were the expectation “to sit still, quietly appreciate the music and to only clap at a certain time.” Kim took matters into her own hands by creating Sensory Concerts where audience members could access high-quality classical music…
