How Huntsville music venues make concerts more awesome for fans with disabilities
July 17, 2025 | Source: AL.com
Instead of buying each other gifts for birthdays and Christmas, Elianna Stanners and her dad Russell Stanners often give each other concert tickets. Elianna and Russell, who both reside in the Huntsville area, go to a ton of shows together, seeing artists like Slash, Old Crow Medicine Show and Drive-By Truckers. They love sharing the electric experience only great live music can give you. “It’s good to listen to a recording,” Elianna, a college student in her early 20s, says. “But you can really feel more of the emotion and the story that artist is trying to tell when you see it live.”…
Famous Musician Gives Major Gift To Small Milwaukee Music Venue
July 17, 2025 | Source: Urban Milwaukee
An independent Milwaukee music venue’s plan to make its building more accessible for people with disabilities got a boost this week with an unexpected donation from musician Jack White. Cactus Club, located in the city’s Bay View neighborhood, has been around since 1958. The building in is nearly 140 years old. Cactus Club owner Kelsey Kaufmann purchased the venue, 2494 S. Wentworth Ave., in 2020. And while the building’s age means it had a “legacy” exception to the Americans with Disabilities Act according to the club, one of Kaufmann’s first goals after she bought the space was to make it more accessible for everyone…

July 17, 2025 | Source: WBKO
July marks Disability Pride Month, a nationwide observance that honors the achievements, visibility, and rights of people living with disabilities. In Bowling Green, the Center for Accessible Living is using this month to raise awareness about the services it provides and the importance of inclusion in everyday life. The nonprofit, which serves South Central Kentucky, offers support ranging from housing assistance and employment guidance to accessibility advocacy. Its mission is rooted in empowering individuals with disabilities to live independently, not only by offering resources, but by meeting people where they are in their journey…
Labor Department Moves to End Disability Hiring Goal for Federal Contractors
July 17, 2025 | Source: Mother Jones
Back in 2013, the Obama administration introduced a low-profile but deeply impactful rule for federal contractors: to remain compliant with Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, the legions of firms contracting with the federal government would have to work towards a staff that was at least 7 percent disabled. That target, which went into effect in March 2014, was designed to address hiring disparities and biases that factored into disabled people’s disproportionate unemployment rate. For more than a decade, those Obama-era targets led to more hiring of disabled employees, countering wage and employment gaps and bringing disabled workers more economic independence…
Porterville man asked to develop accessibility policy for Starbucks
July 17, 2025 | Source: Porterville Recorder
Porterville’s Steve Taylor is becoming the go-to guy on a national level when it comes to developing accessibility policy for those with disabilities and to meet the requirements of the American Disabilities Act. Taylor has been asked to develop the accessibility policy for Starbucks. Taylor admitted it wasn’t something he expected, describing it as “the wildest thing. I’m shocked, I’ve got to be honest with you.” Taylor developed the ADA and Cal-Fin 13082 compliant self checkout stand mounts that have a card reader and key pad that’s easy to use for people with disabilities, including people in wheelchairs…
Civil rights work is slowing as Trump dismantles the Education Department, agency data shows
July 18, 2025 | Source: The Associated Press
The Trump administration insists it hasn’t wavered in its duty to protect the civil rights of America’s children even as it dismantles the Education Department. Yet its own data shows the agency has resolved far fewer civil rights cases than in past years despite families filing more complaints. The Education Department’s civil rights branch lost nearly half its staff amid mass layoffs in March, raising questions about its ability to address a deep backlog of complaints from students alleging discrimination based on disability, sex or race…
Navigating “Passing” As Hearing: My Experience As a Deaf Individual
July 18, 2025 | Source: American Bar Association
I’m a deaf individual. I have profound deafness in my left ear and severe hearing loss in my right. I use a cochlear implant and hearing aid. They help, but what I hear is fundamentally electronic and not equivalent to hearing organically. Because I use hearing devices, speak clearly, and have strong speechreading skills, people often assume I’m hearing or mildly hard of hearing. I’ve been told, “But you don’t seem deaf.” This reflects a common misconception that deafness looks or presents a certain way —that all deaf people are unable to hear or speak and communicate only in American Sign Language (ASL).

12 more NYC subway stations to get accessibility upgrades
July 23, 2025 | Source: 6sqft and Governor.NY.GOV and NY1
A new federal report says Amtrak is losing out on a market of disabled people — who make up at least one out of seven Americans — because it’s done a poor job of listening to their complaints. The report cites problems from difficulty boarding if the passenger uses a wheelchair, to being blocked from bathrooms and cafe cars, to unclear signage in stations and on trains. The report, from Amtrak’s Office of Inspector General, says the company lacks an “overarching strategy” to improve service to disabled customers…
Churches, Don’t ‘Accommodate’ Disability. Plan for It.
July 18, 2025 | Source: Christianity Today
I didn’t grow up in church. But even as an undiagnosed autistic child raised Hindu in the South, I was aware of church culture. I even knew a few popular hymns. Yet I found the idea of church far more confusing than my own family’s religious practices. At the very least, I was certain it would require a level of decoding I couldn’t yet master. I became a Christian in my early 20s, but even from the inside, the church still confused me. Now, as a parent to autistic children, I find myself helping my children decode some of the same rules I still struggle with…
Making Rocky Mountain National Park more accessible for visitors with disabilities
July 18, 2025 | Source: GazetteXtra
More than 100 specially designed picnic tables, four all-terrain wheelchairs and a detailed inventory of trails usable for visitors with disabilities are highlights of efforts this summer to make Rocky Mountain National Park more accessible. The non-profit Rocky Mountain Conservancy has worked for decades with park officials to improve accessibility. Funding primarily comes from the conservancy, which is the park’s official non-profit partner, along with the National Park Foundation, other foundations and donors…
Selma Blair on Accessibility, the 1 Hotel Upgrade That Can Transform a Trip, and Why She Travels With a Squeegee
July 18, 2025 | Source: Travel + Leisure
If anyone knows the transformative power of a good trip, it’s actor Selma Blair. As Blair recently explained while on stage at Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Summit, she was officially diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, though she likely lived with it undiagnosed for 25 to 30 years, including as a child living with optical neuritis. But throughout it all, she’s maintained her signature grace, light, and humor. “The one thing that got me through childhood was great vacations,” Blair said with a laugh…
Brickley’s accessibility revolution | Ross Eric Gibson, Local History
July 20, 2025 | Source: Santa Cruz Sentinel
We are honoring July’s Disability Pride Month with the continuing biography of Terry Brickley, based on a manuscript by his life partner of 13 years, Sally Jorgensen. Brickley lost his job in 1960 from unusual symptoms, which his doctor finally diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. Due to a tragedy in his family, Brickley left his marriage in 1971 and moved into a one-car garage on Pleasure Point, the first place he would fix up to suit his changing mobility needs.Brickley had tried to find work designing and building adaptive devices for disabled people, but no such job was available..
Trump Administration Delays Effort To Roll Back Federal Disability Rights Protections
July 21, 2025 | Source: Disability Scoop and The Architect’s Newspaper and Facilities Dive
Federal officials say they will hold off on a plan to fast-track changes to a key disability rights law amid substantial pushback. The U.S. Department of Energy is pumping the brakes on an effort to rescind requirements under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act that outline what standards newly constructed and altered buildings must meet in order to be considered accessible. The agency had quietly announced its intention to make the change in May, issuing what’s known as a “direct final rule.” At the time, the Energy Department said that the update would take effect July 15 unless “significant adverse comments” were received within weeks…
Talking about Disability: A Conversation with GBH’s Donna Danielewski
July 21, 2025 | Source: GBH
It’s not a position you’ll find at most organizations – Executive Director of Accessibility – but it’s one that GBH’s Donna Danielewski relishes. Over nearly two decades at GBH, she’s helped continue the Foundation’s long tradition of leading the way in media accessibility — from closed captions and audio descriptions to legislation, community events, and more. On the heels of Disability ReFramed: A Growing Community, a GBH-hosted panel centering the challenges, joys, and support networks that accompany life with disability, we sat down with Donna to talk about Disability Pride, what brought her to GBH, her passion for accessibility, and public media’s place in the fight for disability rights…
Residents at downtown Evansville apartment complex concerned over accessibility
July 21, 2025 | Source: 14 News
Some residents at Central Lofts apartments in downtown Evansville say they feel stuck in their homes after a crucial accommodation broke down. Residents say the wheelchair lift in the building has been broken for over a week, largely preventing residents who use a wheelchair from leaving the building. “We can’t get out if there’s a fire, we can’t, we’re just stuck,” Megan Seiler, who lives at Central Lofts and relies on the lift said. “We can’t go get food, we can’t go to the grocery store.” Seiler says this isn’t the first time this has happened…
Columbus project makes city’s neighborhoods more ADA accessible
July 21, 2025 | Source: NBC4
While many curb ramps around Columbus are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), some are not, and the city is working to fix that. The work is included in the city’s 2025 ADA Curb Ramp Project. The project lists 239 ramps at about 70 intersections to be worked on, according to the Columbus Department of Public Service (DPS). One of the intersections the city plans to work on is Dennison Avenue and West Sixth Avenue. “We were talking about cuts that don’t meet current standards, this would be one, and that would be one,” resident Chuck Fairbanks said as he pointed out some issues at that intersection in the University District…
A disability rights advocate pushes for more accessibility while celebrating Mississippi’s progress
July 22, 2025 | Source: Mississippi Public Broadcasting
Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July to commemorate the passing of the American With Disabilities Act, which was signed into law July 26, 1990. It aimed to protect the rights of people living with disabilities and help them to better access public spaces. Scott Crawford is a retired clinical neuropsychologist who lives on his own in Jackson. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. “I no longer drive,” he said. “I use a power wheelchair for mobility. I have a lot of fatigue. I have to sleep something like 12 to 16 hours a day. So you’re catching me at my best, my few hours of functioning.”…

This year it will also feature changes that make these attractions more accessible for all Ohioans, including sensory-friendly rooms and discounted mobility tech. Executive Director of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) Kevin Miller said the state has worked to ensure that accessibility to the Ohio festival increases every year. “We want to make sure everybody has the ability to live up to their God-given potential,” Miller said…
During Disability Pride Month, community leaders discuss accessibility wins, issues around Rochester
July 23, 2025 | Source: Post Bulletin
As part of a series of lunchtime meetings centered around Rochester’s disability community, a panel talked about different aspects of the city’s built environment and how to make them more accessible. “The hope with this session was to be able to demonstrate to community members (that) there is momentum, there is a goal that we’re all trying to attain,” said Jacob Metz, a Rochester City Hall fellow. “And also an accountability piece, so that one year from now, we’ll be able to say, ‘How far did we get on each of these things?'”…
What Medicaid Cuts Mean For Americans, Part II
July 23, 2025 | Source: NPR
Medicaid is a cornerstone of the American health care system. The program provides insurance to more than 70 million low-income people and people with disabilities. Now, addiction experts and nursing home leaders are sounding the alarm over cuts in President Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill. When the cuts occur, Medicaid will lose $1 trillion over the next 10 years and over 11 million Americans will become uninsured by 2034. That’s according to estimates by The Congressional Budget Office. So, what do these cuts mean for some of the most vulnerable Americans?…

Design and Disability at the V&A is a rich, thought-provoking exhibition
July 16, 2025 | Source: The Conversation- UK
One of the first things to greet visitors at the V&A’s new Design and Disability exhibition is a striking blue bench by artist Finnegan Shannon titled, Do You Want Us Here Or Not? This exhibit is a response to the often inadequate seating in museums, which not only acts as a barrier to accessibility for many people, but is more widely symptomatic of ableist approaches to museum and exhibition design. In this case, the invitation to “Please sit here!” sets the tone for the whole exhibition, which also includes a large sensory map of the layout (located at wheelchair level), a tactile map, and QR codes that link to audio description for blind and partially sighted visitors, and also British Sign Language interpretation…

How accessible are the NCC’s trails, really? Now there’s an app for that
July 20, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
For people with disabilities, finding a trail that’s sufficiently accessible can be a challenge. A new web application from the National Capital Commission (NCC) aims to change that. The idea was the brainchild of the Canadian Disabled Outdoor Society, co-founded by Chelsea Ogilvie and Brie Birdsell. They approached the NCC and then partnered with the agency to develop the Inclusive Trails app. In developing the app, Ogilvie said they wanted to see the reality on the ground for themselves…

July 20, 2025 | Source: BBC-UK
Paralympic swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate has been praised for “helping to lift the cloud of limitation around disability” by the president of World Athletics. Sebastian Coe presented the 28-year-old from Belton, Norfolk, with an honorary doctorate on Thursday in his role as chancellor of Loughborough University. Applegate, who has Asperger’s syndrome, won a gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the London 2012 Paralympic Games when she was 16. Applegate said: “If I can be an advocate for young people with the same disabilities as me then I’m more than happy to do so if it makes their lives any easier or better – and to help other people better understand how to help people like me.”…
Disability advocates say NDIS changes disregard alternative therapy benefits

On the red dirt in the outskirts of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, a large, dark bay horse gently nuzzles Cooper in the chest. The 16-year-old in a wide-brim cowboy hat smiles. It is a sweet moment between the two friends. Cooper remembers being sceptical when his parents first suggested equine therapy as a way to build confidence and better manage his emotions during a difficult period. But he gave it a go. And the results, he says, have been life-changing. “It helps regulate my emotions. When you’re in control of such a big animal, it makes the other big things in life seem less scary.”…

Months after its rollout, an online ride booking portal for paratransit is being used by just 10 per cent of passengers, but even that small change is having a big impact on wait times. On Monday, the London Transit Commission (LTC) received an update about the implementation of an online booking portal for riders of Specialized Transit that serves people with disabilities. According to the staff report, 447 individuals have registered to access the online portal, representing 10 per cent of active riders and 9 per cent of daily trip bookings…

July 21, 2025 | Source: The Press- New Zealand
A wheelchair user says he has “real concerns’’ about the accessibility of Timaru’s new public toilets, but the district council says they meet New Zealand standards. Jonathan Nelson, who had spina bifida, a condition that affected the spine, said he had checked out progress on the $1.6 million redevelopment of Strathallan Corner in the town’s CBD, after seeing social media comments questioning their accessibility. He said he was “nervous’’ after seeing the size of the toilet block’s cubicles. “I have concerns about the toilets’ accessibility, not only for people in wheelchairs but for those with prams, and mobility scooters,’’ he said…
The dual impact of menstruation and disability on para athletes
July 22, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
It can be incredibly stressful managing your period as an elite athlete, especially around training and competition. I should know; competing in two Paralympics during my teen years, I lived in a constant state of fear around my period and worried about the impact it would have on my races. As a swimmer, there would be days I was too paranoid to go to training, just in case I leaked. Just about every month, I’d tell my male coach that I had another sore throat to avoid the embarrassment of telling him the truth…

In recent years there have been many news stories about frankly disturbing incidents of airports and airlines delivering substandard and woefully inconsistent assistance to disabled air passengers. These have ranged from unacceptable waits to be disembarked from the plane to wheelchairs and mobility aids being damaged or lost. Having carried out my own survey of disabled travellers’ experiences with assistance at UK airports and airlines and published my own findings in a report, I was pleased to see the then Secretary of State launch The Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group and the appointment of Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson as chair…

- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
