Maryland’s digital revamp aims for an online presence that’s cohesive, secure, accessible
August 27, 2025 | Source: State Scoop
Maryland’s state government is on track to completely revamp its digital presence by the end of the year, completing a nearly two-year process that Marcy Jacobs, the state’s chief digital experience officer, said will make online interactions with the state cohesive, secure and more accessible for residents. When Jacobs was named as the state’s first chief digital experience officer in 2023, she told StateScoop that one of her first tasks was to assess the state’s websites, which had accumulated a lot of “rot,” redundant, outdated or trivial content. She led her team at the state’s Office of Digital Experience to address the web rot and other issues by evaluating the relevance and necessity of web content, and also the tech powering it and its accessibility…
Detroit housing crisis deepens for disabled residents
August 28, 2025 | Source: Axios
Detroit needs more affordable housing — but even more dire is its lack of options for people with accessibility needs. The big picture: Federal accessible housing rules don’t go nearly far enough to help Detroiters with disabilities, per an August study by the city’s housing department, along with Detroit Disability Power and national disability-forward housing nonprofit The Kelsey. City Council requested the study to inform potential future housing policies. By the numbers: Around 1 in 5 Detroiters have disabilities, per 2023 census estimates cited by the study…
Lesson plan: Opening more doors — Inventing ways to make schools more accessible
August 28, 2025 | Source: PBS News Hour
Every year, thousands of students who use wheelchairs attend schools across the United States. Yet many school spaces (classrooms, hallways, libraries and cafeterias) were not designed with wheelchair users in mind. Even with the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), students with physical disabilities often face barriers that make it harder for them to learn, connect and participate fully in everyday school activities. In recent decades, the creation of new assistive technologies has played an important role in increasing accessibility. People like Rosi Cooper, an inventor of wheelchair-related assistive technologies, have developed creative solutions to help ensure that individuals with disabilities are not limited in their daily experiences…
Stations improved after disabled man left stranded
August 26, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Train stations are set to be made more accessible after a disabled man who was left stranded while travelling took on a legal battle. Stations at Appleby, Ulverston, Hexham, Settle, Bridlington and Thorne North – all operated by Northern – required wheelchair users to change platforms by crossing the tracks with staff assistance, or to use a taxi to travel to the other platform. Disability rights campaigner and frequent rail passenger, Doug Paulley, was left stranded at Appleby station in Cumbria last year, when Northern cancelled his pre-booked accessible taxi and no staff were there to help…
Vehicle or mobility device? Growing safety concern for local accessibility advocate
August 28, 2025 | Source: CityNews- Canada
As the popularity of enclosed mobility devices grow, a Cambridge father is ringing alarm bells that they pose a danger to pedestrians and take advantage of regulations meant to increase accessibility for those with mobility issues. Devin Sisak is the founder of Barrier-free Cambridge and is the father of a son who uses a wheelchair. He has highlighted an issue he believes is a public safety matter: the use of enclosed mobility devices on city sidewalks and multi-use paths. They look like a smaller version of a smart-car and often have many of the same amenities, yet they are still allowed in spaces normally reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and users of more traditional mobility aids…

Special education complaints jump in Michigan
August 22, 2025 | Source: Daily Press
As a teacher, Andrea Lee thought she knew how to ensure her children had access to education guaranteed by law in Michigan. But she’s the one who’s received a tough education, filing more than two dozen complaints and four legal grievances over the Howell Public Schools’ treatment of her three children with disabilities. The mother of six has spent more than a year battling with the district over services for her children, her input on their education plans, the lack of make-up education services for one child and the accuracy and completeness district-provided student progress information…
Attacks on Vote-By-Mail, Voting Machines Threaten Disabled Voters
August 22, 2025 | Source: American Association of People with Disabilities
President Trump announced he hopes to end vote-by-mail and limit the types of voting machines that can be used ahead of the 2026 elections. The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) strongly condemns this declaration as an act of voter suppression that threatens the rights of millions of voters with disabilities. As with previous Executive Orders issued on voting by President Trump, the President does not have the constitutional authority to change election laws – this power is explicitly given to the states and Congress. However, even without issuing another Executive Order, the language coming from the White House causes damage by undermining trust in our elections and creating fear and confusion among voters and election officials…
People with disabilities are ‘eating the cost’ of tariffs
August 23, 2025 | Source: Mashable
It’s a tough time to open up your wallet. Global tariffs, a priority for the Trump administration, are hitting certain consumer products harder than others, including electronic gadgets that are reliant on imported product parts. Laptop base prices are seeing three-figure bumps. Items like gaming consoles, vehicles, and even sexual intimacy products have seen prices fluctuating up and down as the government ebbs on its tariff promises. And less obvious industries, like Hollywood, face similar uncertainty. Meanwhile, founders and investors are closely monitoring industry headwinds as the Trump administration’s Big Beautiful Bill introduces more regulatory uncertainty for those trying to stay afloat in competitive markets…
My Autoimmune Medication Left Me With Osteoporosis At 32—How I Found A Better Way
August23,2025 | Source: AmiCietta Duche Clarke- Mind Body Green
As a 25-year-old law student at Cornell Law School, my life followed a relatively normal rhythm. Amidst the endless workload, I managed to carve out time for activities like running, weightlifting, and maintaining a vibrant social life. Even amidst the hustle, I squeezed in a brief visit to my family in New Jersey between final exams. December 16th, 2002, was just another typical day spent at home before heading back to law school. On the morning of December 17th, my mother packed my car with snacks to get me through my second stint of exams and sent me on my way…
How federal officials talk about health is shifting in troubling ways – and that change makes me worried for my autistic child
August 25, 2025 | Source: The Conversation
The Make America Healthy Again movement has generated a lot of discussion about public health. But the language MAHA proponents use to describe health and disease has also raised concerns among the disability and chronic illness communities. I’m a researcher studying the rhetoric of health and medicine – and, specifically, the rhetoric of risk. This means I analyze the language used by public officials, institutions, health care providers and other groups in discussing health risks to decode the underlying beliefs and assumptions that can affect both policy and public sentiment about health issues…
Deaf man completes short film to bring more awareness to access to media without hearing
August 25, 2025 | Source: Spectrum News
TV, radio, newspapers and other forms of media can be liberating to those able to take advantage of them as creative outlets. “Really, personally, I wanted to be able to focus on myself to create content that I could disseminate, whether it be sharing music or different types of short films or videos, all of that type of thing,” Zain Ahmed said. He’s an actor, film writer, director and even producer. For him, media is a way to connect. His most recent short film is called “INVERSE.” “It’s not all based just on me or my life,” Ahmed said. “I wanted to share story in a more general context for, really a group of people that people don’t know about.”…
Teen entrepreneurs in Michigan make a difference through baking and accessibility
August 25, 2025 | Source: Mid-Michigan NOW
Two young women in Michigan are proving that age is no barrier to making a significant impact in their communities. A’myrah Mitchell, 16, from Saginaw, and Abigail Taylor, 19, from Grand Blanc, are turning their passions into projects that benefit others. A’myrah Mitchell began her baking journey at the age of 7, baking with her late grandmother. “My family telling me that oh you should start selling your baked goods because they’re really good and other people need to try them,” said Mitchell. By 14, she had launched her own business, My My’s A Plus Snacks, offering cookies, lemon cake, and Rice Krispie treats…
North Texas nonprofit transforms lives by bringing technology to the blind
August 25, 2025 | Source: CBS News
In a world driven by screens, one North Texas nonprofit is making sure no one gets left behind. Computers for the Blind, based in Dallas, is opening doors for people across the country who are blind or visually impaired. The nonprofit refurbishes donated computers and equips them with powerful accessibility software, providing life-changing technology to thousands who would otherwise go without it. For Antoinette McDonald Ellis, receiving one of these computers was nothing short of transformational. “I can send that email myself. I can look things up myself…
My Favorite Trash TV Is Ruined By Its Ableism
August 26, 2025 | Source: Electric Lit
I was pregnant, swollen, and tired. I couldn’t get comfortable. I lay on the sofa and loudly said some version of, I’m so swollen and tired. I can’t get comfortable, and dramatically piled pillows beneath my feet, hoping my husband would magically appear with a glass of water. That my legs would swell was expected—it’s part of pregnancy, as any pregnant person will tell you—but because my ankles are damaged from years of corrective surgery for severe birth defects, they’re swollen even when I’m not pregnant. When my husband failed to appear, I turned on the television…
Gavin Newsom is trying to have it both ways on disability rights
August 26, 2025 | Source: The Hill
When California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) was asked about President Trump’s recent use of military force on MSNBC, he described the deployment of troops to Los Angeles as “An illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.” That line really stuck out. Given Newsom’s track record on many issues, he seemed like the wrong messenger to deliver it. One of those issues is how Newsom has handled disability rights in his own state government. According to one analysis reported by the Sacramento Bee, public employment among workers with disabilities in California plunged by 40 percent between 2017 and 2023…
Medicare Will Require Prior Approval for Certain Procedures
August 28, 2025 | Source: The New York Times
Like millions of older adults, Frances L. Ayres faced a choice when picking health insurance: Pay more for traditional Medicare, or opt for a plan offered by a private insurer and risk drawn-out fights over coverage. Private insurers often require a cumbersome review process that frequently results in the denial or delay of essential treatments that are readily covered by traditional Medicare. This practice, known as prior authorization, has drawn public scrutiny, which intensified after the murder of a UnitedHealthcare executive last December. Ms. Ayres, a 74-year-old retired accounting professor, said she wanted to avoid the hassle that has been associated with such practices under Medicare Advantage, which are private plans financed by the U.S. government…
Justice Department Secures Agreement with North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections to Improve Communication Access for Incarcerated People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
August 28, 2025 | Source: Department of Justice and WRAL
The Justice Department today secured an agreement with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) to ensure that incarcerated individuals with hearing disabilities are provided effective communication and the opportunity to participate equally in NCDAC’s prison services, programs, and activities. NCDAC operates more than 50 prison facilities and houses more than 30,000 individuals. The agreement resolves complaints under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) alleging that NCDAC fails to provide incarcerated individuals with hearing disabilities with sign language interpreters, hearing aids, cochlear implants, text telephones, videophones, and other auxiliary aids and services…
US FDA narrows under-65 COVID vaccine eligibility; maintains full access for older Americans

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared updated COVID-19 vaccines for everyone over age 65 but narrowed its approval for younger people to those with health risks, the companies said on Wednesday, in a shift from prior years when most people were eligible for the inoculations. Student housing at People’s Park to be named after Judith Heumann, disability rights leader
August 28, 2025 | Source: Berkeley News
The 11-story UC Berkeley student housing project under construction at People’s Park will be named Judith E. Heumann House, commemorating the disability rights leader who championed accessibility and justice around the world. Heumann, who died in 2023, graduated with a master’s degree from Berkeley’s School of Public Health in 1975. She was a key disability rights advocate who helped lead a historic 26-day sit-in at a federal building in San Francisco, which compelled lawmakers to sign the regulations for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities…
Forward momentum in Pennsylvania’s disability services waitlist
August 28, 2025 | Source: The Center Square
Pennsylvanians living with intellectual disabilities and autism often wait months or even years for the services they need. Gov. Josh Shapiro and Secretary of the Department of Human Services Val Arkoosh say the state has made huge strides in cutting down on the waitlist and expanding services. They visited ARC Human Services in Washington County to discuss their progress. In addition to reducing the adult emergency waitlist by 28% over the past year, the administration highlighted improvements for direct service professionals, or DSPs, who received a 6% pay bump to $17.85 an hour…

Accessibility improvements secured at six Northern railway stations following legal challenge
August 22, 2025 | Source: Leigh Day- UK
The challenge was brought by disability rights campaigner Doug Paulley and focused on the accessibility of platforms at Appleby, Bridlington, Hexham, Settle, Thorne North, and Ulverston stations. The stations all have staff-operated barrow crossings, which means that disabled passengers who can’t access the stairs need to have staff to help them access the platforms. Last year, Mr Paulley, a frequent rail passenger and wheelchair user, found himself stranded in Appleby station after his pre-booked accessible taxi arranged through Northern was cancelled…

Garden City Arts is a mosaic piece assembled from 69 individual canvases. When assembled, the artwork symbolizes a collective effort to advocate for more inclusiveness and accessibility in public spaces and areas. “The piece makes me feel positive, reflecting positivity,” says Garth Homer Society Artworks program artist, Ashley Fraser. “The event made me feel kind of like we are all part of a big family, so to speak.”…
Kenya puts inclusion and accessibility at the center of employment services with support from the ILO
August 22, 2025 | Source: International Labour Organization- Kenya
Kenya was one of the first East African countries to ratify Convention No. 88 on Public Employment Services (PES), doing so in 1952. While it has since become the second largest economy in the region, unemployment rates remain high. Groups in vulnerable situations often face greater barriers to decent work. Insufficient resources, limited capacity, and gaps in the service offering of PES also created barriers to effective labour market functioning. To address these challenges, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has been supporting the National Employment Authority (NEA) to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the PES and the delivery of active labour market policies (ALMPs)…
From Zoom to conference rooms: Accessibility without barriers
August 23, 2025 | Source: Trinidad Guardian- Trinidad
Meetings are taken for granted. Yes, you read that correctly. The average person may groan at having to give up 45 minutes of their life for a meeting that could have been an email, but they don’t realise that being able to participate in a meeting in the first place with no barriers is a privilege, one that persons with disabilities often do not have. While people are able to focus on brainstorming ideas, gathering feedback and strengthening employee engagement, someone with a wheelchair has to wonder if the building is physically accessible. Someone who is blind/visually impaired has to hope that the meeting documents are in an accessible format so that their screen reader can efficiently read the materials to them…
OKIB members have the chance to meet Canadian icon Rick Hansen
August 23, 2025 | Source: Castanet- Canada
It is a moment Rosalie Saddleman will not soon forget. The member of the Okanagan Indian Band had a chance to meet Canadian icon Rick Hansen recently. Hansen, best known for his Man in Motion World Tour that took him to 34 countries and his lifelong commitment to accessibility and inclusion, was in the Central Okanagan recently where he met Saddleman. According to the OKIB August newsletter, Hansen’s message was powerful and direct: When we design spaces for everyone, everyone benefits. The day sparked important conversations about what it truly means to build communities that are welcoming and accessible to all…
Ontario’s Disability Policies Can Do More for Children with Disabilities and Their Families
August 23, 2025 | Source: The Good Men Project- Canada
A $175 million increase to Ontario’s Autism Program announced in this year’s provincial budget is welcome news for families of children with autism who endure long waits for support services. With this extra funding the province has given itself the opportunity to make significant progress toward living up to a promise made 20 years ago when the provincial legislature passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and proclaimed that Ontario would be fully accessible by 2025. Today that promise remains unfulfilled, with shortcomings in provincial disability policies preventing persons with disabilities – including children – from fully participating in society…
Hong Kong should explore the potential for visual impairment-friendly travel
August 24, 2025 | Source: South China Morning Post- Hong Kong
For many people – whether they are older, or have mobility or sensory challenges – travelling can be complicated. In Hong Kong, efforts to improve accessibility have grown, but most still focus on mobility. Let’s widen the conversation: think about the last time you travelled. How much of that depended on sight? At Beyond Vision International (BVI), we use tactile graphics with audio descriptions to help the visually impaired explore culture, art, architecture and communities. For the visually impaired, accessibility is not just about reaching a destination, but experiencing it on equal terms. From appreciating a building’s history to noticing a painting’s smallest details, many travel experiences rely on sight – yet few attractions or guides address this gap…
People with disability still dealing with inaccessible air travel as aviation reforms drag on
August 25, 2025 | Source: ABC News- Australia
Disability advocate Jono Bredin was excited to be invited to speak about inclusive housing at a summit in Canberra this month. But the Melbourne resident, who lives with cerebral palsy, soon found out there were no flights on any airline — or accommodation once he got there — that could assist with his needs. He said the irony of being unable to attend an accessibility event due to inaccessible transport wasn’t lost on him. “I was very angry,” he said. Mr Bredin’s power wheelchair exceeded the allowed height for most aircraft flying from Melbourne to Canberra, and the only flights that allowed a chair of that size did not provide hoist transfers…
Blind tourists holidaying in Guernsey for 26 years
August 26, 2025 | Source: BBC- British Isles
A blind couple who have been visiting Guernsey since 1999 have expressed their gratitude for the kindness of locals. Eighty-year-old Jeff Johnson lost his sight in his 30s, while his wife Janie, 76, was born blind. The Staffordshire couple said while footpaths in St Peter Port could be uneven, the friendly attitude of islanders made up for it. A combined statement from the Committees for Health and Social Care and Employment and Social Security said it was “continually reviewing its policies to ensure they are best practice and appropriate for the time”. Mr and Mrs Johnson have been staying at Les Rocquettes Hotel on the island, along with their two guide dogs, Lilly and Davy, who “mean the world” to them…
UK Employment Appeal Tribunal Rules on Protection Against Disability Discrimination for Workers With ADHD and Autism
August 28, 2025 | Source: Greenberg Traurig- UK
The UK Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) has considered what protection is offered to job seekers and workers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) under the disability discrimination provisions of the Equality Act 2010. In the case of Stedman v Haven Leisure Limited [2025] EAT 82, Mr. Stedman had applied to Haven Leisure Limited, an operator of UK holiday parks, for a job as an animation host. Mr. Stedman’s application was unsuccessful, and he brought a disability discrimination claim based on the manner in which Haven handled his application…
Alberta minister calls for automatic enrolment in Canada’s new disability benefit
August 28, 2025 | Source: National Post- Canada
Alberta Social Services Minister Jason Nixon is calling on Ottawa to scrap the standalone application form for the new Canada Disability Benefit. Nixon said in a letter to federal counterpart Patty Hajdu that those receiving Alberta’s Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) and other provincial disability benefits should automatically receive the CDB. “As social services are within provincial responsibility, I am … requesting that the federal government defer to Alberta’s provincial eligibility requirements to streamline access to federal disability supports,” wrote Nixon…
In Colombia, Disability Rights Advance on Paper but Stigma Endures in Daily Life
August 28, 2025 | Source: Mad in America- Colombia
A new qualitative study, posted as a preprint on SciELO, examined how people in Colombia experience psychosocial disability in their daily lives. The project was led by Lina María González Ballesteros, Mario Sebastián Rodríguez Durán, and Anny Juliana Fonseca Quintero, affiliated with Colombian universities and research institutes. Together, they sought to understand how stigma and self-stigma affect people with psychosocial disabilities across different regions of the country. The results highlight not only the persistence of stigma in Colombia but also its role as a defining barrier to inclusion worldwide…
Finances of people with disabilities are worse in the Balkans and Baltics
August 28, 2025 | Source: Euro News- Europe
Almost a quarter of people who have a disability in the European Union (EU) are struggling financially, says Eurostat. People with disabilities are more likely to struggle making ends meet than those without disabilities. However, fewer people are suffering economically in Luxembourg (8%), Germany (11%), the Netherlands (11.2%), or Finland (13.2%). By contrast, in Greece (75.5%) and Bulgaria (52%), more than half of people with a disability live in households that have difficulties in making ends meet. Having a job does not always bring people out of poverty, whether they have a disability or not, but it usually lowers their risk…
Unlocking the workplace for disabled people – the case for Flex Plus jobs as a pathway to work
August 28, 2025 | Source: London School of Economics- UK
The deep cuts to health and disability benefits announced in the Government’s Pathways to Work green paper were widely condemned, and eventually lead to a U-turn. However, it is unfortunate that the Department of Work and Pension’s plans have overshadowed other potentially more positive policy proposals. For example, the Get Britain Working White Paper last Autumn set the welcome goal of increasing workforce participation among disabled people who can, and want to, work, and has commissioned a review by Sir Charlie Mayfield of employers’ role in creating healthy and inclusive workplaces…
How does disability discrimination differ from other protected characteristics under the Equality Act?
August 28, 2025 | Source: People Management- UK
The number of early conciliation notifications related to disability discrimination rose 41 per cent between 2023/24 and 2024/25, according to analysis of data from Acas. Although the rising number of notifications could be due to a number of factors, such as increased awareness, greater prevalence of disability disclosure or ongoing post-pandemic health issues, it highlights why employers should be well versed with disability protections. Under the Equality Act 2010, disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on a person’s ability to do normal daily activities…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
