Website Access Issues Plague Gov, Gutenberg; Inclusive Design Meets Off-Roading, Outer Space, and Hair Care

By Jack McElaney  |  October 12, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—10/12/18. Physical and website access issues continue to plague government and private businesses. In the public sector, polling place accessibility for people with disabilities crops up more frequently as midterm election dates draw near. Government website accessibility lawsuits are also breaking out of their regional norms, and this week, Minnesota had its first encounter with litigation related to online access. While the private sector continues to grapple with how the[…]

NDEAM Spotlights Jobs and Access for Disabled Employees; DOJ Weighs in on Website Accessibility

By Jack McElaney  |  October 5, 2018  |    |

Disability Employment Awareness Month begins at state and national levels. Also, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) weighs in on website accessibility requirements for businesses. But did anything change?  Accessibility in the News—10/5/18. This week kicked off National Disability Employment Month (NDEAM), which is observed every October (states also have their observances, including our home state of Texas). Throughout the month, initiatives celebrate the productivity and perspective that employees with[…]

The Americans with Disabilities Act: Buildings, Websites, Greek Life Miss the Mark

By Jack McElaney  |  September 28, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—9/28/18. Though the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passed more than 20 years ago, compliance with the Act is still an issue. While it could be argued that website accessibility is a relatively new issue, equal access and nondiscrimination violations continue to occur in traditional settings. This week’s news covers inaccessible fraternity houses, sororities not admitting a cheerleader with Down Syndrome, and buildings, websites, and city infrastructure[…]

For Website Accessibility Cases, Industries Give Tips, Request DOJ Clarification

By Jack McElaney  |  September 21, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—9/21/18. This week, museums, modeling, makeup, and the Texas proposal to remove deaf-blind Helen Keller’s story from school curriculum stood beside articles addressing website accessibility cases impacting various industries.  A new museum app opens the art world to those who may otherwise experience anxiety over new events, while a review of an association conference provides good tips for all seeking to provide an accessible experience for all[…]

Accessibility Progress Being Made Online, On Grounds in Education Sector

By Jack McElaney  |  September 14, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—9/14/18. The week started off with a heavy focus on institutions of higher education. A student’s entire college experience, from class registration to parking to classes themselves, can be dramatically affected how well accessibility has been implemented online, in class, and across campus. At least two universities are intentionally pursuing accessibility improvements, and one witness to the registration process for a person with disabilities is now launching[…]

Laws, Litigation Message: Make Websites Accessible

By Jack McElaney  |  September 7, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—9/7/18. The industries are varied and the methods differ, but the message from a few of this week’s stories is the same: Make your website accessible for people who have disabilities. Leveraging both legal actions and established mandates, groups in the U.S. and abroad are emphasizing the need for online access for everyone. Several articles this week focus on the litigation aspect: Property management and leasing companies[…]

Market is Ripe for Accessible Home, Fashion Designs for People with Disabilities

By Jack McElaney  |  August 31, 2018  |    |

Accessibility in the News—8/31/18. There were a few repeated themes this week: There’s still a lot of work do be done in making websites more accessible, both in business and in government. In elections, new technology and improved processes can foster more inclusive voting. And designs for people with disabilities are appearing in housing and buildings, fashion design, and other products and services. Some of this growth is due to[…]
