Initiating Highly Active Antiretroviral Treatment

There are recommended guidelines for initiating highly active antiretroviral treatment or HAART. When considering treatment, the clinician consults with the individual then takes the guidelines into account. The clinician also considers individual factors such as living situation, income, and drug or alcohol use, which can inhibit a client’s ability to adhere to a drug regimen. HAART should be offered to anyone with the following conditions:

History of AIDS-defining illness

Pregnancy  

HIV-associated nephropathy

Hepatitis B (HBV)

HAART should be offered to anyone with a viral load of at least 100,000 copies of HIV RNA per milliliter of plasma.
