Unchain My Art takes first prize at AIR Austin!

Congratulations to Unchain My Art (AKA Team MicroAssist) for taking first place in the annual Accessiblitity Internet Rally! AIR-Austin matches teams of web designers/developers with non-profit organizations to build new websites or enhance existing ones to make them more accessible for people with disabilities: the competition does an amazing job of increasing awareness of the tools and techniques that make the Internet accessible to everyone.

Jacob, Jillian, and Pavel worked with Alyson Curtis of Alyson Design, and Donna Blumberg, web designer and software developer extraordinaire, to create the Texas Inmate Families Association's new site. TIFA is an amazing non-profit based in Austin dedicated to breaking the cycle of crime by strengthening families through support, education, and advocacy. Check out their new website!

When helping clients apply for enrollment in a medication program, case managers may encounter situations that make it difficult to answer questions on the application. We use stories about fictitious people to explain best practices for handling common problems.

INTERACTIVE TIMELINE

HIV case managers need to be familiar with the history of the disease and advances in treatment. This type of historical information is often boring for the learner. With the help of our DSHS case management training specialist, we added interesting bits of information such as news clips and celebrities affected by the disease. We took this information and put it in an interactive timeline. Learners can manipulate the timeline and easily access the historical information they want to see.

Animated and stationary images are powerful communication tools. They allow us to create mental models and understand relationships. It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. With that in mind, we use graphics to provide clarity and make concepts memorable.

THE HIV REPLICATION PROCESS

HIV case managers need to understand how the virus spreads in the body. Images of the disease process allow learners to create a mental model that facilitates understanding. Animating the process allows the learner to start with foundation information and sequentially build on what they know. We used narrated animation to help learners understand this complicated process. We also provide learners with a job aid based on the animation. Check out the lesson to see the animation and how visuals are used to check learner’s knowledge.
