PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Austin, TX – March 20, 2009 – MicroAssist has partnered with Dr. Neil Trautman, director of the National Institute of Ethics, to launch an online sexual misconduct prevention course. The course is intended to help school administrators reduce the risk of a damaging sexual misconduct incident by training all school employees, including teachers and administrative and support personnel, to recognize and report behavior which contributes to a nationwide problem.

Examining school records of sexual misconduct, the Associated Press found that more than 2,500 educators were disciplined during a 5-year period. The victims were young people in 70% of those cases, and half involved criminal charges.

“I’ve spent the last 20 years of my life teaching adults about ethics and integrity, and nothing I’ve observed has more devastating effects,” Dr. Trautman said of the sexual misconduct problem. “The betrayal of trust that it represents is a problem that requires a sense of urgency on the part of all administrators to prevent it from ever happening in their schools.”

MicroAssist’s Preventing Sexual Misconduct and Abuse in Schools course helps administrators address this problem with topics including:

  • Victim and offender profiles
  • Early warning signs of abuse
  • Grooming techniques used by offenders
  • Legal obligations to report suspected misconduct
  • The culture of silence and other reporting barriers
  • School policies

The course is available through MicroAssist’s EthicsEd website, and is ready for immediate implementation. The course includes access to a Learning Management System, which allows administrators to monitor employee completion and maintain records for legal purposes. Customized features are also available, such as personalized messages from a local school administrator or unique school policies and documents.
