SharePoint 2010 is a tool we're really excited about because of all the ways it makes it easier for people to work together, enabling your staff to set up websites to share information with others, manage documents from start to finish, and publish reports.

What is SharePoint? There's a lot in the name: SharePoint is a tool for sharing information and providing a specific place for you to find and collaborate on information. No matter your position in your organization, SharePoint 2010 has something great to offer you.

  • IT Professionals: SharePoint 2010 helps you cut training and maintenance costs, save time and effort, and focus on higher priorities. Flexible deployment options let you customize the system so that people can do their jobs effectively in a secure environment. Plus, with centralized administration and management features, you can be confident knowing that you maintain control over a system that is ready to respond to any business need.
  • Developers: SharePoint 2010 will help you build custom applications and components to rapidly respond to business needs. With familiar tools, it’s easy to create Web Parts, external content types, and workflow activities for use in SharePoint solutions. A full set of extensibility APIs also lets you customize your SharePoint implementations.
  • End Users: SharePoint 2010 helps you share ideas and expertise and find the information you need to make better decisions, helping you quickly become more productive. SharePoint 2010 works seamlessly with technologies you currently use, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Microsoft Unified Communications.

SharePoint 2010 offers six main capabilities: Sites, Communities, Content, Search, Composites, and Insights.

Sites

SharePoint 2010 Sites provide a single infrastructure for all your internal websites. Use Sites to share documents with colleagues, manage projects with partners, and even publish information to customers. SharePoint sites are simple to make. In fact, SharePoint 2010 includes several features to help anyone build a site from start to finish. Novice or expert, we can have you quickly creating, customizing, and publishing a site that looks great and meets your organization's needs, whether internal or external.

Communities

By providing collaboration tools for your staff to share ideas and information, Communities let people work together in ways that are most effective for them. Even better, SharePoint 2010 lets you manage these tools from a single, powerful platform. With Communities, your staff can be more creative, and even better, more productive - and administrators have the security of knowing that they're working in a totally secure, well-managed environment.

Collaboration tools available include wikis, workflows, team sites, and task lists - all of which can be integrated into Microsoft Office applications, Exchange Servers, and even Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Dynamics. These collaboration tools also make it simple for users to implement project management practices, turning task lists into Gantt charts, managing predecessors and follow-ups, and enabling teams to easily access the information they need.

The SharePoint 2010 collaboration platform is also secure, easy to manage, and infinitely scalable. People can work together more safely with the platform's granular security and privacy controls, centralized policy setting, and detailed reporting and analysis.

Content

Never has content management been so easy! Combining traditional content management, social capabilities, and powerful search, it is as natural to manage as it is to use. With simple administration, you can quickly set up compliance policies, while its familiar interface allows staff to work just as they would in Microsoft Office. The result is well-managed information that is easy to find, share, and use.

SharePoint 2010 Content makes it easy to tag content, enforce retention schedules, declare records, and even apply legal holds. With these measures, you can address the need for compliance and reduce the risk of mistakes when information is archived or disposed.

Search

SharePoint 2010 Search helps your people find the information they need to get their jobs done. It provides intranet search, people search, and a platform to build search-driven applications—all on a single, cost-effective infrastructure. But what’s so unique about SharePoint 2010 Search is its combination of relevance, refinement, and people. This new approach to search provides an experience that is highly personalized, efficient, and effective.

If your company is like most others, it has a lot of information in a lot of different formats. To help cut through the clutter, SharePoint 2010 Search provides an interactive, visual search experience. Visual cues help people find information quickly, while refiners let them drill into the results and discover insights.

With SharePoint 2010 Search, you can meet everyone’s search needs on a single platform. You can add your own vocabulary, tune relevance, and use each person’s specific information to deliver a great search experience.

Composites

SharePoint 2010 Composites provides building blocks that you can use to assemble, connect, and configure collaborative business solutions. From simple sites to complex applications, you can rapidly respond to specific business needs with custom solutions.

You don’t need to be a programmer to use the building blocks in SharePoint 2010. Even without code, you can create highly customized sites and solutions: Share Microsoft Visio diagrams and Microsoft Access databases. Use Microsoft SharePoint Designer and Microsoft InfoPath to design solutions based on workflows and forms. You’ll be surprised by how many of your business challenges can be resolved with a code-free solution.

With SharePoint 2010 Composites, you can work with data from other systems as if it lived in SharePoint. Create, read, update, delete, and search the data using external lists. Work with it online in a browser or in Microsoft Office.

SharePoint 2010 Composites helps you centralize and manage business solutions so that your people can get their jobs done and you can save time and effort. For example, you can:

  • Centralize Access databases and Excel workbooks and deploy them from SharePoint.
  • Provide controlled access to company data.
  • Deploy safe Sandbox Solutions to SharePoint without risking the health of the platform.
  • Use the time and effort you saved to focus on higher IT priorities.

Insights

SharePoint 2010 Insights lets everyone access the business information they need to make good decisions. With powerful features like interactive dashboards and scorecards, people can use the information in databases, reports, and business applications to address specific needs.

Even better, they can work naturally and confidently, thanks to a familiar user experience. Because SharePoint 2010 Insights uses well-known applications and interfaces, people are comfortable from the start, and they know how to get the data they need. For example, anyone can use Excel Services to publish Microsoft Excel workbooks in SharePoint 2010. From there, an entire team can access and analyze the same data and rest assured that everyone has the right information.

With SharePoint 2010 Insights, people can access the information they need to do their best work. Its reporting and analysis features are both powerful and easy to use, and its familiar interfaces make anyone feel comfortable slicing and dicing data.

SharePoint 2010 Insights provides interactive dashboards and scorecards that help people define and measure success: key metrics can be matched to specific strategies and then shared, tracked, and discussed. By making Business Intelligence (BI) accessible to everyone, SharePoint 2010 Insights can help your people—and the entire company—be more effective and efficient.
